In this episode, Anna sits down with Stephanie Thoma, speaker coach, author of Confident Introvert and Not That Sweet, and founder of Connect With Confidence. Stephanie helps introverts and rising leaders craft keynote talks, strengthen their messaging, build speaking schedules, and — most importantly — connect with people in a way that feels meaningful rather than performative.Stephanie is not in the business of polishing people into “perfect” speakers. She helps them root into who they already are, speak from truth, and create connection instead of performance. In this episode, we talk about:• Why the idea that “public speaking is for extroverts” is completely false• What makes introverts powerful, resonant speakers — often more compelling than extroverts• Why Stephanie cares so deeply about helping quieter voices step forward and be heard• The fears clients come in with:o fear of judgmento fear of blanking outo fear of “taking up space”o fear of being boring or “too much”o fear of being seen as an authority• The nervous-system dynamics behind speaking anxiety• How Stephanie helps people regulate, reframe, and root into safety before they ever get on stage• The tools she uses with clients — including confidence mapping, energy calibration, embodied presence, intention-setting, and speaking from connection instead of perfection• Why being a great speaker is about meaning not performance• Stories of clients who went from terrified to empowered — including introverts who now lead teams, deliver keynotes, and speak with grounded confidence• Why visibility is not a personality trait — it's a practiced skill anyone can growThis episode is an invitation to unmute yourself, meet your fear with compassion, and step into the kind of speaking that feels like you. You might have mixed feelings about rain. For those experiencing long periods of drought, rain can bring joy. But for those wanting to enjoy the outdoors, a large downpour can ruin the experience. Getting drenched by the weather can make you feel cold and weaken your immune system, but there are some surprising benefits to going out in the rain, provided you've got your brolly and raincoat! Have you ever noticed a difference in the smell in the air after it's rained? That smell has a name – petrichor. This earthy scent, a pleasant one to many, happens when raindrops release particles from the ground. Humans are incredibly sensitive to the smell, which some scientists think is because it tells us there is new, fresh water. It probably made our ancestors feel safe and calm. And then there's the relaxing sound of raindrops splattering on a hard surface. A 2018 study published in PubMed Central by Thoma and colleagues found that the sound of rain can reduce the stress hormone cortisol and bring a sense of calm. When raindrops hit a hard surface, something called 'negative ions' are released into the air, which, when in high levels, are known to boost serotonin in the brain, again making us feel more relaxed. However, there isn't a scientific consensus about exactly how this is happening. These negative ions also make the air cleaner. Pam Dalton, a cognitive scientist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Pennsylvania, says there is reasonably good evidence that "the negative ions can clear dust, bacteria, allergens, and other particles from air, which for many can have a positive effect on respiratory health." The heavier the rain, the greater effect it has on cleaning the air. You could feel some of these benefits from the comfort of your own home, just by opening the window and taking a whiff of the petrichor scent or listening to the pitter-patter sound on your roof. Or, after making sure you're dressed in the right attire, step outside in the rain to fully experience the mood-boosting effects of those mysterious negative ions in the air. Just remember to come straight back inside if you see lightning, as this could be dangerous.

19 Now when it was late that same day, the first of the week, and the doors were shut, where the disciples were gathered together, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them: Peace be to you.Cum ergo sero esset die illo, una sabbatorum, et fores essent clausae, ubi erant discipuli congregati propter metum Judaeorum : venit Jesus, et stetit in medio, et dixit eis : Pax vobis. 20 And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord. 21 He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you.Dixit ergo eis iterum : Pax vobis. Sicut misit me Pater, et ego mitto vos. 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost.Haec cum dixisset, insufflavit, et dixit eis : Accipite Spiritum Sanctum : 23 Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.quorum remiseritis peccata, remittuntur eis : et quorum retinueritis, retenta sunt. 24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, who is called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him: We have seen the Lord. But he said to them: Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.Dixerunt ergo ei alii discipuli : Vidimus Dominum. Ille autem dixit eis : Nisi videro in manibus ejus fixuram clavorum, et mittam digitum meum in locum clavorum, et mittam manum meam in latus ejus, non credam. 26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said: Peace be to you. 27 Then he saith to Thomas: Put in thy finger hither, and see my hands; and bring hither thy hand, and put it into my side; and be not faithless, but believing. 28 Thomas answered, and said to him: My Lord, and my God.Respondit Thomas, et dixit ei : Dominus meus et Deus meus. 29 Jesus saith to him: Because thou hast seen me, Thomas, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and have believed. 30 Many other signs also did Jesus in the sight of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31 But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God: and that believing, you may have life in his name. The doors were shut": The same power which could bring Christ's whole body, entire in all its dimensions, through the doors, can without the least question make the same body really present in the sacrament; though both the one and the other be above our comprehension.

Franz Thoma is Principal Consultant at TNG Technology Consulting, and an organizer of MuniHac. Franz sees functional programming and Haskell as a tool for thinking about software, even if the project is not written in Haskell. We had a far-reaching conversation about the differences between functional and object-oriented programming and their languages, software architecture, and Haskell adoption in industry.

The journey to competition success is rarely a straight line. In this episode, we're joined by Celine, Shane, and Thoma who take us behind the scenes of Celine's recent PSA Level 1 trial victory in Wyoming. What does it really take to prepare a dog for back-to-back trial days, and how do you maintain consistency when the pressure's on?The conversation quickly evolves into a debate about training methodologies that challenge conventional wisdom. Shane shares his approach to e-collar use, arguing that "the quicker you can get out of escape, the better" and explaining why he deliberately trains without electronic tools to build reliability when it matters most. This perspective opens up a broader discussion about creating working dogs who can function beautifully both on and off the competition field.Perhaps most valuable is the group's candid reflections on balancing intensity with livability. As Celine notes about her competition Malinois: "I thought she was going to be more crazy because everyone was telling me Mals are these crazy prey monsters." Their insights into managing multiple high-drive dogs in a household setting provide practical wisdom for anyone juggling the demands of serious training with everyday life.Whether you're actively competing in dog sports or simply fascinated by the psychology behind training working dogs, this episode delivers actionable insights, hard-earned wisdom, and a refreshing honesty about the challenges and rewards of pushing the boundaries of what's possible with our canine partners. Plus, don't miss details about an upcoming trainer seminar that promises to transform how you approach dog training as both an art and a business. To sign up for the October seminar, visit the website here.

Recorded by a crackling campfire in Montana's bear country, this episode pulls back the curtain on what it truly means to live with working dogs. Meg is joined by dog trainers Thoma and Lex (who recently welcomed a Malinois puppy into her life) for an unfiltered conversation about the expectations versus reality of high-drive dogs.Have you ever wondered why some dogs seem impossible to settle or why your "reactive" dog behaves so differently from other dogs of the same breed? The answer might lie in understanding what these dogs were bred for. We dive deep into what defines a working dog, from detection K9s and protection sport competitors to high-energy pets with working genetics that leak out as behavioral issues when not properly channeled. The conversation takes a candid turn as we discuss the lifestyle adjustments necessary for working dog owners – the crate rotations, the management strategies, and the acceptance that not every dog can be a "coffee shop dog." We explore how e-collars provide freedom rather than restriction for many high-drive dogs, and why the expectations we place on our dogs often cause more frustration than the dogs themselves.Whether you're considering a working breed, struggling with a high-drive dog, or simply curious about a different approach to dog ownership, this episode offers practical wisdom on matching dogs to lifestyles, finding appropriate outlets for natural drives, and the freedom that comes from accepting your dog for exactly who they are – not who you wish they would be.Listen in as we share personal stories of success, failure, and the beautiful reality of building our lives around these remarkable animals who weren't bred to fit into our world, but rather, to work alongside us in it.theeverydaytrainer.com

We're reading some great books this summer and are excited about new releases and events on the horizon. Happy Listening and Happy Reading! https://www.bookcougars.com/blog-1/2025/episode239

This week on After Hours x Above the Fold, I sat down with CX specialist and Midwest dad extraordinaire, Larry Thoma. We got into what great CX looks like after the checkout page, how brands can use returns to build trust (not just process refunds), and why “dishwasher safe” is not a real instruction. Larry's worked with brands like Yeti, Caraway, and See's Candy, so he's got receipts (and hot takes!).We talked about email touchpoints, refund timing, customer segmentation, and the wild world of return policies (Marine Layer, we're looking at you). Plus, Larry's take on what actually makes someone a loyal customer is one you'll want to steal. If you're in retention, CX, or just trying to stop losing customers in the post-purchase void, you'll want to catch this one.
Dog trainers Meg and Thoma tackle your most pressing canine questions in this comprehensive Q&A episode packed with practical solutions for common behavioral challenges. When it comes to getting dogs to truly settle down, they reveal why constant food rewards often backfire, creating dogs that stare intensely rather than genuinely relax. Their tethering approach offers a refreshingly different alternative to the overused "place" command, allowing dogs to find calm on their own terms without the pressure of perfect obedience. "It's almost like forced meditation," Meg explains, highlighting how this technique helps dogs learn self-soothing skills that transfer to real-world situations. For those struggling with rescue dogs, their counterintuitive advice might surprise you: play hard to get. "The harder you try, the harder it gets," Meg shares, comparing relationship-building to those finger traps from childhood. Rather than forcing affection, they advocate for patient coexistence and discovering what genuinely brings your specific dog joy—not what you think dogs should enjoy. This approach respects a dog's need to feel invisible at times while building genuine trust. The episode dives deep into tool selection, crate training philosophies, and managing reactivity with nuanced approaches that consider each dog's temperament and developmental stage. Their discussion on van life with multiple dogs provides fascinating insights into creating sustainable routines in limited spaces, emphasizing the importance of insulation, power management, and organizational systems designed around canine needs. What sets this episode apart is the trainers' refreshingly honest perspective drawn from real-world experience rather than idealistic theories. Whether you're struggling with a reactive puppy, considering a second dog, or simply trying to understand why your training efforts aren't sticking, you'll find actionable guidance grounded in decades of hands-on work with thousands of dogs. Tune in to transform your relationship with your four-legged companion through clear communication and realistic expectations.

However, everything changed as she embraced leadership roles and began to reveal a more outgoing side of herself. Since then, she has been on a mission to reframe what it means to be an introvert. Initially leading by example, she now helps others through her company, Confident Introvert. Through corporate workshops, webinars, and private one-on-one coaching, she empowers introverts to enhance their networking skills. To further share her insights, she wrote “Confident Introvert: A Practical Guide to Connecting with Others at Networking Events and Beyond.” She is a Hub Partner because she collaborates with nonfiction authors looking to blend strategy with personal storytelling from an empowered, heart-centered perspective. Welcome to Episode 218, featuring a Playwright Spotlight with Laura Thoma about her new Christmas play, MISS MARGARET'S BARTON COTTAGE CHRISTMAS SURPRISE, coming this December to Drama Works Theatre in Old Saybrook. We made up for lost time with a slew of Biblio Adventures, starting with a discussion with James R. Benn at the Mystic & Noank Library, after which we dashed over to see the new home of Bank Square Books in Stonington, who co-hosted the event. Next was the Windham-Campbell Literary Festival at Yale in New Haven, where we bought books curbside at the Possible Futures Bookmobile. Days later, we were thrilled to attend the grand opening of Montgomery & Taggert in Chester – Connecticut's first Romance Bookstore! Lastly, we saw DRACULA: A COMEDY OF TERRORS at Legacy Theatre in Stony Creek. We did some reading, too, since our last episode. Imagine sending your beloved dog to daycare, only to find the experience leaves them more anxious and misbehaving than before. This episode pulls back the curtain on the unsettling reality behind many doggy daycare facilities, with stories that might make you reconsider where to leave your furry friend. I'm Meg, a seasoned dog trainer, and joining me is my partner Thoma. Together, we expose some eye-opening tales of chaos and mismanagement that dogs encounter in these supposed havens. Our conversation spans from chaotic thunderstorms causing pandemonium in understaffed facilities to heartbreaking tales of dogs regressing after violent encounters. We don't shy away from the emotional toll these experiences take on both pets and their owners. We stress the importance of honesty and proper training in pet care services, and how misleading marketing and inadequate staffing lead to unsafe environments. Thoma and I dig deep into the industry's flaws, questioning if every dog is truly suited for daycare or if some might be better off in the comfort of their homes. From the chaotic warehouses packed with unruly dogs to the few facilities that manage to get it right, we explore the vast disparities in the dog daycare industry. By sharing firsthand experiences, cautionary tales, and industry anecdotes, we aim to arm you with the insights needed to make informed decisions for your pet's care. Join us as we navigate these troubling yet enlightening stories, urging for better management practices and highlighting the need for structured downtime in dog care environments.
