Episode 280 features former Major League Baseball Umpire, Al Clark and barbecue aficionado, Big Rome sharing wonderfully entertaining stories and bringing the heat. Al Clark was a Major League Baseball umpire for 30 years, working more than 3,000 games, including two All-Star Games, ten playoff series, and two World Series.  We discuss his book, Called Out But Safe:  A Baseball Umpire's Journey.  The book was first published more than 10 years ago, but the stories are timeless and extremely entertaining.  Al has been on the field for many historic games, including Nolan Ryan's 300th win, Cal Ripken's record breaker, and the 1989 World Series which will forever be remembered, not becuase of who won, but due to an earthquake.  Al dealt with Earl Weaver, Billy Martin, and Dick Williams, all of whom were known for their harsh treamant of umpires.  Hearing Al tell the story of his "fake" confrontation with Lou Piniella is worth the price of admission. Big Rome has taken his love and passion for barbecue and incorporated that into so many facets.  He has created a line-up of barbecue rubs, does catering, makes entertaining cooking videos, and is a brand ambassador.  He has also dabbled in the podcast space, creating a barbecue fire side chat for his fellow barbecue lovers, especially his Texas Barbecue Crew.  Big Rome is a Los Angeles Dodgers fan and we discuss the team's World Series victory, the upcoming season, and other baseball talk.  For more information on Big Rome go to https://www.bigromesbbqempirellc.com/ We recommend you go to Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, Cutting Edge Firewood High Quality Kiln Dried Firewood - Cutting Edge Firewood in Atlanta for high quality firewood and cooking wood, Mantis BBQ, https://mantisbbq.com/ to purchase their outstanding sauces with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Kidney Project, and for exceptional sauces, Elda's Kitchen https://eldaskitchen.com/   We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Yesterday's Sports is part of the Sports History Network - The Headquarters For Sports Yesteryear.EPISODE SUMMARYAfter the Kansas City Athletics moved to Oakland in 1968, the City was hungry for another baseball team. They got one just one year later. As all expansion teams do, they struggled in their first two seasons, going 69–93 in 1969 and 65–97 in 1970. But they had some talented young players, most notably, centerfielder Amos Otis and left fielder Lou Piniella, who won Rookie of the Year in 1969.In 1971, only their third year in the league, the Royals finished the season with an 85–76 record. In 1973, they upped their win total to 88; in 1975, they improved their record to 91 wins and 71 losses. With talented young players like first baseman John Mayberry, third baseman George Brett, and pitcher Dennis Leonard, it was only a matter of time until the Royals won the AL Western Division. They did precisely that in 1976.You can read the full blog post here.YESTERDAY'S SPORTS BACKGROUNDHost Mark Morthier grew up in New Jersey just across the river from New York City during the 1970s, a great time for sports in the area. Sweet Lou was never an apt nickname for Lou Piniella, whose fiery temper and aggressive play earned him respect and fear around the game after he joined the Yankees 50 years ago this week, and became an essential cog in their dynasty in the late '70s and early '80s. But Lou's career would stretch far beyond his time in pinstripes and lead him tantalizingly close to the Hall of Fame as one of the most highly regarded managers of the 1990s and 2000s. Mike and Bill look back at Lou's 50 years in pro ball after he fell just one vote short of the Hall of Fame this week. Plus, happy birthday to Bob Shawkey and Joe Collins!

David Fishof is an American music producer, sports agent, and the founder and CEO of Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp. Listen in as David weaves his stories, shares his big heart, and guides us through his Hoffman Process transformation. In 1999, David came to the Process to understand why he couldn't "keep his marriage." He was successful in his career and knew, in his heart, that he was a good guy. His parents had been married for 50 years and yet, he'd been unable to save his marriage. David wanted answers and he was willing to do whatever it took to find those answers. Between the time he turned in his pre-work and arrived for his Process, David's father passed away. Upon Raz Ingrasci's urging (David's Process teacher), David decided not to postpone his Process knowing that it would be a potent time to do the deep work he was ready for. David had a wonderful relationship with his father. Even so, he was able to come up with a large number of traits that he'd adopted from his dad. Transforming these helped guide him closer to the answers he was seeking. Eventually, David came to see and know more clearly the passionate man he has always been. By healing the pain of his past, the confusion that had clouded his true passions cleared. He stepped into work that fed his passion and started the Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp. And, he deepened his faith, discovering he could weave his Quadrinity Check into his daily prayers. A fabulous storyteller, boy does David have stories to tell about the world of Rock and Roll, the power of the element of surprise, and so much more. Please enjoy this conversation steeped in the power of storytelling and vibrant vulnerability.
