We’re getting close buddies - this week Hank and Dave have themselves a little group gear therapy as we start preparing for the music world to reopen. This week is about harnessing probability and the power of randomness in creation, taking a thoughtful approach to sorting through your recording ideas, and the super sexy ideas behind getting your songwriting organized via Trello. Let’s be honest; Hank also talks about himself and Mark and their new project Dr01dsmith for a while. Also discussed: Moog’s new synth packs, The Pedal Movie release date, Mike Maimone’s new movie, Scores’ new video, Metallica blues coffee, Squier stuff, and the brilliance of Billie Eilish.Junkyard warriors, unite.
Mike Maimone is a poster child for grit, hustle, and road-dogging. The singer, songwriter, monster keyboardist, and recording/mix engineer works as hard as anyone in the industry, is prolific to match, and anyone with an interest in making a career in music can learn a thing or two from this episode.Mike talks us through getting his start in a reggae band at Notre Dame, living on couches in control rooms in Chicago, joining Company of Thieves, forming Mutts with his CoT bandmate, and his current solo endeavors in Nashville with the new records Borrowed Tunes and isolation:001. Mr. Mutt also shines a light on connecting with the LGBTQ community as a gay man in the music industry, changing the chords in cover tunes, the choices we make in pursuit of our careers, and sometimes just saying ef the data. Also discussed: Hank’s new old Silvertone acoustic and new new Universal Audio Apollo x8p, Brian Jones, Todd Terje’s “It’s Album Time!”, new pedals from Boss, Strymon, JHS, and Voodoo Labs, and Black Bobbin teaming up with Benson for a pink sparkle Preamp.Don’t sell your drums for beer.

In a city filled with hard-working musicians, Mike Maimone is right up there. Averaging 100 live dates a year for the past 12 years, he’s also released 6 albums and 6 EP’s on his own label, and done plenty of session work for other artists. Maimone plays the blues with a swampy New Orleans-influenced sound reminiscent of Dr. John or Leon Russell. And in his own words, he brings “a little queerness to traditionally straight blues-based genres”.
Chicago gets Vortex'd, Baz quits the gym he quit years ago, Mike Maimone stops by to talk music and play a few tunes. Check out MikeMaiome.com for ticket links, audio, and fresh visuals.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/jwbasilo)

This week, I'm joined by Mutts main man Mike Maimone (hooray for alliteration). It was Taco Tuesday, so we went to Lindo Michoacan (3148 W Lawrence Ave). Before an exclusive in-car performance of the new Mutts song "Tin Foil Hat," we cover: *My embarrassing placement of "the" in front of Mutts *Mike's political stance ("I like science") *Social media arguments with friends of friends *The secret to identifying a good neighborhood joint is who eats there *My trip to Cleveland to see the Angel of Death *Mutts history ...and Mike makes me sing along with Tin Foil Hat.
Mike Maimone is known for his gruff voice, insane work ethic and his energetic live show! It's only appropriate that his band is called "Mutts" because he is the definition of a Road Dog." We talk vocal health, songwriting, pop music, and swap terrible tour stories! Two lovely people, musical guest Mike Maimone from Mutts and special guest Alex Molar play our favorite game Baddies or Bands (and thanks to Charlie Otto from Grood music for that lovely jingle. Mike gives us a treat with a song at the end which is timelessly interrupted by an arriving guest buzzing at the door. Thanks for being a great guy Mike. And thank you for listening to AWSM Comedy Radio, connecting awesome people, laughing like monsters. -Awesomonster
