The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
Ever wonder why certain songs follow you from ballparks to bar bands to late-night TV finales? We take a playful but pointed run at the “most overplayed song” ever with a live listener bracket that pits Free Bird, Don't Stop Believin', Sweet Caroline, Brown Eyed Girl, and more in a ruthless showdown. Along the way, we unpack what repetition really means, how stadium anthems, wedding playlists, and radio gold become rituals that comfort some of us and exhaust the rest. You'll leave with your hill to die on and a few hot takes from fellow fans to test your case. Before the sparks fly, we open with a rapid-fire look at Ella Langley, state champion dancer, voice-shifting surgery, a pellet gun for pests, bangs born from a bad haircut, and a one-pickle pre-show ritual that weirdly works. That personal color tees up a high-energy country news sweep: Lainey Wilson teams with Kevin Costner on The Grey House soundtrack beside titans like Willie Nelson and Shania Twain; Riley Green stretches into acting with a Yellowstone-adjacent series; Rascal Flatts hit RodeoHouston; Meghan Moroney and Ella Langley notch a chart milestone for women in country; Thomas Rhett welcomes baby number five; Luke Combs and Dierks Bentley map new tours; and LeAnn Rimes and Rodney Crowell drop fresh tracks. We also spotlight the Recording Academy's new Best Traditional Country Album category debuting in 2026—an overdue nod to classic songwriting and instrumentation. We round things out with a tight chart countdown spanning radio favorites and indie gems, a March 2016 flashback that tracks how we got here, and a lively mailbag: production vs. songwriting first impressions, dream guests (from Rick Beato to Mutt Lange and Kelly Clarkson), and the gear that changed everything as studios moved from tape to Pro Tools. It's a full-spectrum listen for country fans, music nerds, and anyone who has ever yelled “Free Bird!” at the wrong time.Episode LinksBob Bullock: https://jayfranze.com/episode28/Dave Jackson: https://jayfranze.com/episode53/Dalila Mya: https://jayfranze.com/episode102/Mark Badolato: https://jayfranze.com/episode140/Send a text Support the showLinks Jay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/ JFS Country Countdown: https://jayfranze.com/countdown/ Contact Contact: https://jayfranze.com/contact/ Socials Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranze TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jayfranze X: https://x.com/jayfranze YouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranze Services Services: https://jayfranze.com/services/ Books Books: https://jayfranze.com/books/ Merchandise Merchandise: https://jayfranze.com/merchandise/ Support Support: https://jayfranze.com/support/ Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/
Watching Sunday’s NFL title game has become one of my least favorite major sports events of the year. You must credit the NFL for making fans wait for two full weeks for the season finale to be played. This brilliant marketing move allows word-of-mouth to spread to the once-per-year viewers who just show-up to watch the commercials and enjoy a party. Those of us season-long football fans are ready to get this final game of the year over with. The pro football season continues to be stretched out longer and longer. Rest assured that football season will eventually shrink if demand falls. The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots had exceptional regular seasons with identical 14-3 records. Unfortunately for Patriots fans, their favorite team’s offense was as cold as the weather back east in Boston last weekend. Seattle toyed with New England throughout the first half like a kitten batting around a ball of yarn. A 3-0 first quarter Seattle lead became an equally boring 9-0 halftime advantage for the Seahawks. Sunday’s third quarter likely put many to sleep. Seattle’s kicker Jason Myers added his fourth field goal of the game. Wowee! It was 12-0 heading into the final 15 minutes of the NFL season. At least New England punter Bryce Barringer had the chance to say “Hi, Mom!” as he punted an incredible eight times in the first three quarters. This game was played in perfect weather conditions in Santa Clara, California. Yawn. Some of us tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists put forth that the NFL has exposed a rather interesting “fourth quarter” trend. Nearly every playoff game played this season had an explosion of points coming in the fourth quarter of play. Why has that been happening? Sunday’s season finale was no exception. This game’s final quarter produced (gasp!) 30 points between these two sleepy combatants. Seattle was never in jeopardy of losing the lead during the final quarter. The Seahawks completed a touchdown pass to open-up a 19-0 lead on the hapless Patriots. New England’s passing game finally awakened long enough to produce two late touchdowns after this game was effectively over. Final score: Seattle 29, New England 13 Seattle’s “Dark Side Defense” deserved the MVP The Seahawks’ defense appeared to know New England’s offensive playbook as well as the Patriots did. Blitz after blitz sacked New England’s 23-year old second year quarterback Drake Maye. He was taken down six times, hurried on nearly every throw, had two interceptions, and lost a critical fumble. Seattle’s defense literally threw the kitchen sink at Drake Maye on Sunday. They suffocated New England’s running game, too. The team’s quarterback ran for his life for 37 yards to lead all New England rushers Sunday evening. Seahawks’ running back Kenneth Walker III had a tremendous game with 135 yards on the ground. His backfield dance moves should earn him an invitation to the next season of “Dancing with the Stars”. Walker’s running ability provided some of the only excitement during the first three quarters of this rather boring football game. Walker received the game’s MVP award. It’s a shame that the Seattle defense couldn’t receive this award as a group. New England Patriots – Were they simply lucky to have made it this far? Many are pointing out that New England’s 2025 regular season schedule was loaded with weaker teams. The Patriots played 12 of their 17 regular season games against teams which would post a losing record in 2025. New England finished with a stellar 14-3 record after going 4-13 just a year ago. The Patriots’ excellent defense carried this team into the NFL title game. New England allowed just three points (at home vs. the Chargers), 16 points (home vs. the Texans) and only seven at Denver in three playoff games leading up to Sunday’s NFL title game. This year’s group of AFC playoff teams were, being generous, offensively-challenged. Top-seeded Denver’s defense carried the Broncos all season long. The Houston Texans had a terrific year – on defense. Jacksonville’s surprising season was also led by a better-than-expected defense. It didn’t matter which team emerged from the AFC to face Seattle on Sunday. The Seahawks had a defense capable of clobbering any AFC contender this year and just enough offense to win. That was Seattle’s simple recipe for victory all season long. Is Seattle a dynasty in the making or was this just one great season? Don’t forget that the Los Angeles Rams gave the Seattle Seahawks a run for the NFC West title all year long. The banged-up San Francisco 49ers also gave the Seahawks and the Rams a run for the money. All three NFC West competitors made it into the second round of the playoffs. Seattle finished 14-3 in the regular season. They played just eight teams with losing records this year. The Seahawks’ defense was already considered top notch. The offense, though, surprised many with an improved performance in 2025. Seattle scored less than 20 points in only three of 20 total games this season. The Seahawks’ eighth-ranked offense developed into a perfect complement to the NFL’s top-rated defense. A number of Seahawks players will want more money to stick around for next season. Assuming they will lose a few to players to free agency, the nucleus of this team is still young and talented. Coach Mike Macdonald’s magic with this team is much like college football’s Indiana Hoosiers under coach Curt Cignetti. Macdonald’s Seattle Seahawks always seemed better prepared for games than their opponents. Yes, Seattle should be a force in the NFL again next season – assuming that they remain relatively injury free. Sunday’s commercials didn’t move my meter. How about you? The commercials for Sunday’s game ran $8 million per 30-second ad. I challenge you to point to one specific commercial which will move you to purchase that company’s product this week. A national newspaper just published its annual ranking of these expensive ads. The beer commercial featuring a horse saving a baby bird (which turned out to be an American eagle) flew into the top spot. Will it sell any more beer this week or simply convince 100 million people that this particular beer maker is more patriotic than its competitors? A potato chip maker’s tearjerker ad showing an aging farmer handing over the keys of his farm equipment to his daughter captured second place. It was a very nice spot, but I doubt millions will drop an extra bag of the company’s $5 potato chips into their grocery cart this week. The bronze medal winner featured an iconic polar bear (long representing the top cola maker) coming to grips that his major competitor’s new sugar-free cola actually tastes better. Will millions now check-out the taste of the polar bear’s new favorite soft drink? Doubtful. I wanted to like the Neil Diamond imitator singing a knock-off of “Sweet Caroline” as he sprayed mayo onto sandwiches inside of a cafe. The commercial’s ending was just a bit weird. My “creepy-but-effective” commercials award went to an AI developer. Their commercials all began with a person asking AI for advice. A computer generated character then provided a cringy answer and suddenly morphed into an unexpected product sales pitch. Effective, but who’s buying their product? My thoughts on the 30-minute halftime show? I haven’t watched it in decades Did you know that the NFL’s “big game” primarily featured college marching bands beginning in 1967 for ten years until mid-1970’s? A wholesome singing group known as “Up with People” was featured five times over the next ten years as the primary halftime entertainment. Even us younger viewers (at the time) cringed. The year 1991 brought “New Kids on the Block” as the first pop-oriented group performing at halftime. Michael Jackson’s 1993 appearance officially solidified the change to one primary performer for future halftime shows. Major popular artists like Diana Ross, Aerosmith, Paul McCartney, and the Rolling Stones would appear over the next ten years. The last 20 years has produced younger artists to help attract that demographic to the annual football extravaganza. This year’s halftime show featured a polarizing performer who became the first to sing a halftime show entirely in Spanish. Many liked the show. Some didn’t and changed the channel. I didn’t watch the halftime show (as usual) in order to grab a snack and check my email. Happy trails to you, football! Adios to college and pro football for another season. The Indiana Hoosiers and Seattle Seahawks were deserving champions this year. Though some of us will be tempted to watch a game or two of spring football in a few months, America’s most popular sport needs to hibernate until next fall. Less truly is best. Plus, we break down shore excursions, non-ship tours, and what makes some itineraries worth repeating.Somehow, we also end up debating robot lawnmowers, smart litter boxes that weigh your cats in kilograms, karaoke competitions at sea, and whether Sweet Caroline should ever be attempted in the wrong octave. (Spoiler: no.)It's cruise advice, travel stories, light scandal, and tech nonsense, all rolled into one episode. Just the way we like it.

"For you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will rise, and there will be healing in its wings. You will go out and jump around like calves from the stall" (Malachi 4:2). Amen.Last Sunday afternoon, Matt and I took young Trapper to Casper Mountain to ride our side-by-sides. I'm blessed to have Bluetooth speakers in my side-by-side. So, I had him listening to my eclectic choice of music – Swing, Celtic, Home Free, Tophouse, Bodeans, and so on. One of the first songs that came on was "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond. We both sang loudly to the song, especially the "ba ba ba" and "so good so good" parts. Later, Trapper asked, "Did we just listen to AC/DC followed by Johnny Cash?""Yes. Yes, we did."One of the last songs that Johnny Cash released was a song that reflected his Christianity and his reverence for God's Word. The title of the song is, "When the Man Comes Around." It's a song about Jesus' return on Judgment Day. It is filled with biblical references and pictures that Jesus will return, time is short, and the moment for serious reflection is right now. Here are some of the lyrics:Whoever is unjust, let him be unjust still. Whoever is righteous, let him be righteous still. Whoever is filthy, let him be filthy still. Listen to the words long-written down, When the man comes around. Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers. One hundred million angels singin'. Multitudes are marchin' to the big kettle drum. Voices callin', voices cryin'. Some are born and some are dyin'. It's Alpha and Omega's Kingdom come.Jesus is returning. St. Paul encourages the Christians in Thessalonica with this news. Paul had only been able to stay in Thessalonica for about three weeks before he was chased out of the city by the extreme persecution to the gospel of Christ. The Thessalonian citizens stayed and endured this persecution. Paul encourages them that their faith is growing more and more (2 Thessalonians 1:3), despite – and perhaps because of – this persecution. He writes, "This is evidence of God's righteous verdict that resulted in your being counted worthy of God's kingdom, for which you also suffer" (2 Thessalonians 1:5). How was their persecution evidence of God's righteous verdict?Paul assured the Thessalonians that God loved them, had forgiven them, and would continue to be with them. That was how God judged them. If they had caved in and not gone through the trials and persecutions they were called on to endure, God could not judge them worthy of eternal life. But because they had endured, God's judgment was right, and his judgment would be made public on the Last Day.How about you? Are you being persecuted for your faith in Jesus Christ? At work, at home, at school, in public, on social media? Are you bold and unapologetic about your faith? Do you wear your faith symbolically on your sleeve or physically on your T-shirt? Do people know you're a Christian with every move you make and every word you speak? When you face persecution – which you should because the world hates us because they hate Christ – that is evidence that you, too, are being counted worthy of God's kingdom, for which you suffer.Paul says that God makes a "righteous verdict". There are two things that God will do on Judgment Day because he is just and his verdict is righteous. First, God will judge us as worthy of eternal life because we held to Christ by faith. This verdict is ours, not because of anything we have done, but only because the Holy Spirit brought us to faith and kept us in the one, true faith. The only thing we "did" was not say "no" to this gift of faith. Second, God will punish the enemies of the gospel for all they've done to his chosen people throughout the history of the world. God will undo all the pain that sin inflicts on us, including the pain of persecution.St. Paul then goes on to explain how God's justice will come upon those who oppose his Son and the followers of his Son. "Certainly, it is right for God to repay trouble to those who trouble you, and to give relief to you, who are troubled along with us. When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his powerful angels, he will exercise vengeance in flaming fire on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. Such people will receive a just penalty: eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from his glorious strength" (2 Thessalonians 1:6-9).Paul says clearly that God will repay trouble to those who trouble you for your Christian faith. Why is God's justice important for Christians to remember as we suffer at the hands of tyrannical governments, demonic despots, unbelievers, pagans, social media bullies, and so on? As individual Christians, we don't take revenge. We follow Paul's advice to the Christians in Rome who were also being persecuted, "Do not take revenge, dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath. For it is written, 'vengeance is mine; I will repay,' says the Lord" (Romans 12:19-20).The Lord Jesus will bring his righteous wrath upon those who persecuted his people. We leave room for God's vengeance. Until then, we turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39); forgive 70 times 7 (Matthew 18:22); pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44); live as Christian salt to season a decaying world; and live as light in the pagan darkness (Matthew 5:13-16). God will bring trouble on those who trouble us. But we cannot be weak Christians, either. We put on the gospel armor, and we take the fight to the devil and his followers. Every day, I am sharing images on social media reminding Christians that we are in a war. Christ has called us to be his warriors, Christian soldiers, marching off to war, with the blood of Jesus going on before. This is a war Christ has already won for us. But it's one where we'll get hurt and bloodied in. We're going to be in trouble! What kind of trouble will those who trouble us receive? "Vengeance in flaming fire." Malachi describes this vengeance in a similar way: "The day is coming, burning like a blast furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble. The day that is coming will set them on fire, says the Lord of Armies, a day that will not leave behind a root or branch for them" (Malachi 4:1). "Eternal destruction." That seems like a contradiction, for how can destruction be everlasting? But there's no other way to describe the endless pain and torment there. "Away from the presence of the Lord." The worst part about God's justice is that unbelievers will be removed from God's presence. They will be outside, unwanted, and uncomforted.American culture has attempted to neuter God by taking away his justice. They imagine he's a divine grandfather sitting in heaven handing out candy and sweets to those on earth. He looks the other way when people sin. He tolerates all kinds of false religions. Society has attempted to emasculate God by emptying him of his authority. They have mutilated the God of the Bible by removing his wrath and only emphasizing his mercy. When the wrath of God is removed, then the central act in all human history has been emptied of its power and meaning. If God is not all that angry with sinners, then Christianity is nothing more than feeble moralism where we urge people to be a little nicer to each other. If Christ's death did not pay the terrible price for a world of human sin, then his death was nothing but a pathetic and weak act that can do nothing to change our lives. If Christ did not bear in his sacred body the wrath and punishment we deserve, then we are still in our sins and will endure God's wrath and punishment on the Last Day.The Bible balances the wrath of God with the mercy of God. If people accept God's mercy through Christ Jesus, they escape his wrath. However, if people refuse to receive the mercy of God for Christ's sake, then they will receive the wrath of God coming from the Lord Jesus in blazing fire.Take the time to bow your head and confess to God your sin of taking God's wrath upon your sin lightly.Private confession. Are you a Christian? Have you received and believe in Christ's mercy? Has God counted you worthy of his kingdom because of your faith in his Son?If you answered "yes" to those questions, then Judgment Day has already taken place for you. It took place when the ever-living Son of God hung dead on the cross. It took place when the guilty verdict was placed on him. When God the Father poured out his wrath on his Son. When God declared his righteous verdict of guilty upon Jesus. When the Father forsook, turned his back on, and abandoned his only begotten Son. When the punishment for humanity's rebellion was placed upon the thorn-crowned head, the scourged back, and the nailed hands and feet of Jesus Christ. All the judgment of God against humanity's sin took place on that one day, in that one place, on that One Man. On the cross. In the tomb. Under God's wrath. Your Servant took your place. Your King took your place. Your God took your place – as your Substitute – to set you free. And you are free. It is finished! God's judgment has been endured by Jesus so that you as Christians might receive God's pardon and forgiveness. God's wrath was poured out in history's past instead of being poured out in our eternal future. This verdict of freedom and this pronouncement of forgiveness is what you need to hear in church every week. For every week, as we gather in church, we have a small dress rehearsal for Judgment Day. Every week in worship is like a little Judgment Day as the King comes to us and tells us his judgment. He announces in the absolution, "I have forgiven your sins by my sacrifice." He reveals, "You are mine," every time we see the pastor make the sign of the cross reminding us of the cross that was placed over our hearts and heads at our baptism – the date when we became God's. In the Scripture lessons, sermons, and hymns Jesus declares, "I will either be your unrelenting Judge or your all-merciful Savior." When we taste his body and drink his blood in the Lord's Supper he proclaims, "I am giving myself to you."You will suffer for believing all this. The theme from the Scripture readings today is don't despair. God declares over and over again that there will come a time when those who have rebelled against him and brought trouble to his people will themselves have trouble, and God's believers will have relief. God will carry out his justice. We Christians may suffer temporally here on earth at the hands of unbelievers for our faith, but the unbelievers will suffer eternally in hell at the hands of a just God for their lack of faith. "Such people will receive a just penalty: eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from his glorious strength, on that day when he comes to be glorified among his saints, and to be marveled at among all those who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed" (2 Thessalonians 1:9-10).Because of God's wrath there will be justice. And relief. What is the relief that all Christians are looking forward to? Eternal life in heaven where we'll be marveling at our Christ.Failing to recognize God's wrath can effectively trivialize God's power. Singing about God's wrath upon sinners serves as a direct reminder of God's mercy to forgiven sinners. That's why we sang of God's wrath and relief that comes on Judgment Day. Songs like "Great God, What Do I See and Hear," "The Day is Surely Drawing Near," and "Day of Wrath, Oh, Day of Mourning." Or even country songs like, "When the Man Comes Around."Last Sunday evening, I texted Ashley, Trapper's mom. I asked if Trapper enjoyed the ride. She said he did. I then wrote, "Great! I don't fault him if he said, 'I'll go with Pastor again. Just don't let him sing anymore!" She assured me he didn't say anything like that. When you suffer for your Christian faith, you might wonder, "Where is God's justice?" Just wait. It's coming. Maybe not now. Maybe not soon. But eventually. Eternally. The final justice will be on the Great Day of Judgment. God's justice will be our relief. Then God will repay trouble on those who trouble you. Amen."You will trample the wicked. They will surely be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I take action, says the Lord of Armies" (Malachi 4:3). Amen.View this sermon (with video and/or audio recording) on our website: https://www.casperwels.com/sermons/god-will-repay-trouble-to-those-who-trouble-you/
Wake up, babe - a new AMT feature just dropped! Midway through the interminable month between new episodes, we'll be doing an Answer Us Back episode that's all bits of feedback you send in about episodes old and new. Today we hear from: Scott, on the lyrics of ‘Sweet Caroline', first discussed in AMT365 in 2018; Steve in San Diego, with some cool tiara trivia following our discussion of that headgear in AMT408; Elodia and Jess, both former medical students, illuminating us on what really goes on when they dissect human bodies during their training, which came up in AMT404. And Elodia previously wrote to us all the way back in 2011! If you've been storing thoughts about AMTs 1-411, send them to us for future episodes of Answer Us Back. And as always, send in your questions, in voicenote or written form to answermethispodcast@googlemail.com, for all new AMT412 which will be in your podfeed 27 November 2025. Sarah wants Susie to see T-Pain with her in Denver, and Susie's up for it, but had to confess she doesn't know any of his songs. We discuss one-hit-wonder band, Devo, why they were misunderstood, why they never had another hit, and how expectations determine how a band deals with only having one hit. We find out the origin story for Sweet Caroline being played at sporting events, why a tragedy caused the ritual to spread, and why Susie is still confused about how the song became interactive. Plus, we learn why Sarah hates "swaying" songs. Susie and Sarah have a sing-a-long with church and camp music. And Susie explains why Keanu Reeves is the most impersonated celebrity of all time, how scammers use fandom to prey upon victims, and why men and women fall for different tricks.Brain Candy Podcast Presents: Susie & Sarah's SpOoOoOoOoktacular Spectacle, October 30, Oriental Theater, Denver, Colorado: Get your tickets! 0:00 - Susie's T-Pain Blind Spot & Overalls Fashion09:58 - The Misunderstood Genius of Devo and One-Hit Wonders22:13 - Unpacking Sweet Caroline and Camp Sing-Alongs39:34 - Why Keanu Reeves is the Top Celebrity Scammer TargetBrain Candy Podcast Website - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/Brain Candy Podcast Book Recommendations - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/books/Brain Candy Podcast Merchandise - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/candy-store/Brain Candy Podcast Candy Club - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/product/candy-club/Brain Candy Podcast Sponsor Codes - https://thebraincandypodcast.com/support-us/Brain Candy Podcast Social Media & Platforms:Brain Candy Podcast LIVE Interactive Trivia Nights - https://www.youtube.com/@BrainCandyPodcast/streamsBrain Candy Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastHost Susie Meister Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterHost Sarah Rice Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBrain Candy Podcast on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodBrain Candy Podcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/braincandy (JOIN FREE - TONS OF REALITY TV CONTENT)Brain Candy Podcast Sponsors, partnerships, & Products that we love:Visit https://www.carawayhome.com/braincandy10 to take an additional 10% off your next purchase.Get 25% off your first month of Ritual when you visit https://ritual.com/braincandy & add Essential Protein today.Get 40% off your first box PLUS get a free item in every box for life when you go to https://www.hungryroot.com/braincandy and use code braincandySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The goal of our guest this week is to make the dulcimer, one of a handful of popular instruments to originate from America, into a sound as familiar and important as the guitar, bass, drum or cow bell! On his debut album "Making Waves", Sam demonstrates how dulcimer interpretations of rock standards like "Wild Horses", "Sweet Caroline" and "Please Please Me" can experience a renaissance from the treatment. Sam will be visiting the American Dulcimer Museum in Cincinnati in October, and we would have loved to have him in our studio for some live music if scheduling had worked out. But he will be holding a concert at 7pm on that date at the museum's location in Sharonville. #dulcimer #samedelston #instrumentalmusic #classicrock #livemusic #contemporarymusic #antisocialnetwork #asn #podcast #shorts #follow #shortvideo #video #viralvideo #funny #comedy #podcastlife #prowrestling #wwe wweuniverse Sam Edelston Uleashing the Dulcimerhttps://samthemusicman.comSam Edelston Making Waveshttps://edelstondulcimer.bandcamp.com/album/making-wavesNational Dulcimer Museumhttps://www.americanfolkmusicschool.org/the-museumYeah Uh Huh Social Stuff:Yeah Uh Huh on TikTok @yeahuhhuhpod Yeah Uh Huh on Facebook @yeahuhhuhpod Yeah Uh Huh on Twitter @yeahuhhuhpod Yeah Uh Huh on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/7pS9l71...Yeah Uh Huh on Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...Yeah Uh Huh Website:https://yeah-uh-huh.wixsite.com/yeahu...Yeah Uh Huh Social Stuff:Yeah Uh Huh on TikTokhttps://www.tiktok.com/@yeahuhhuhpodYeah Uh Huh on Facebookhttps://facebook.com/YeahUhHuhPodYeah Uh Huh on Twitterhttps://twitter.com/YeahUhHuhPodYeah Uh Huh on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/7pS9l716ljEQLeMMxwihoS?si=27bd15fb26ed46aaYeah Uh Huh on Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/yeah-uh-huh/id1565097611Yeah Uh Huh Website:https://yeah-uh-huh.wixsite.com/yeahuhhuhpod

"There are two types of people in this world: Those who like Neil Diamond, and those who don't." - Dr. Bob Wiley, author of the renowned memoir Death Therapy. As Dr. Bob suggests, you can divide the world into two (hopefully unequal) parts. You'll find Bill and Frank on the bright side of the world where Neil Diamond is adored. This episode sees the return of Dan Ducroix, who fell in love with the music of Neil Diamond over 25 years ago, leading him for a brief period to emulate the 1970s style of the smouldering version of Neil. He may have abandoned the belt buckles and mutton chops, but not his love for the music of the Jewish Elvis. We celebrate the most ubiquitous (ubonkquitous?) of the Diamond catalogue: "Sweet Caroline." We discuss not only the history of the song, but also reflect on singalong culture and dangers of writing a song inspired by E.T. Thank you for listening! Neil Diamond is one of the best-selling singer-songwriters of all time. In August 1972 he performed a series of 10 sold-out shows at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Recordings from this concert would be released as a live double-album entitled Hot August Night later that year in December. Neil Diamond was born in Brooklyn, New York, the child of a Jewish family. At the age of 16 he was inspired by seeing folk singer Pete Seeger perform at a camp for Jewish children in upstate New York, and received his first guitar shortly thereafter. This would set the direction of Diamond's career, starting with both taking guitar lessons and writing songs. After some time barely scraping by as a songwriter, Diamond began to find some success by the mid-60's, most prominently with several songs for The Monkees, including the big hit, "I'm A Believer." Diamond moved to Los Angeles in 1969, where he recorded some of his bigger solo hits, including the iconic "Sweet Caroline."Many consider "Hot August Night" to be Neil Diamond's best work, capturing the artist at his prime and at the top of his game. It went to number 5 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and was number 12 for the 1973 year-end chart. It was number 1 in Australia for 29 weeks in 1973 and 1974, and remains one of the highest selling albums in that country. Neil Diamond retired from touring in 2018 toward the end of his "50 Year Anniversary World Tour" after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. However, Diamond did not retire from music, and continued writing and developing new projects.Wayne brings us this soft rock singer-songwriter live album for this week's podcast. Kentucky WomanThis song is a bonus track on the CD, and many will recognize this song from the remake performed by Deep Purple. It was written in 1967 and went to number 22 on the charts after its release. It appeared on the compilation album, "Neil Diamond's Greatest Hits" released in 1968 on Bang records after Diamond left that label.Cherry CherryThe inspiration for this song was an early relationship with a significantly older woman. This was Diamond's first hit, reaching number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The most familiar studio version of this song was released in mid 1966 on Bang records, and was the final track on Diamond's debut studio album, "The Feel of Neil Diamond."Song Sung BlueThis song was originally released on Diamond's eighth studio album, "Moods." It was his second number 1 song in the United States, and his last solo #1 song in America to date. The musical inspiration for the song is Mozart's Piano Concerto #21, second movement. The lyrics reflect on the power of music to heal when a sad mood is poured into a song. Cracklin' RosieOriginally released in 1970, this song topped the charts and sold over 1 million copies. The studio version appeared on "Tap Root Manuscript," Diamond's sixth studio album, and was recorded with instrumentation provided by session musicians from the Wrecking Crew. While the lyrics suggest that Rosie is a prostitute, there are tales that it actually refers to a cheap sparkling wine from Canada called "Crackling Rosè." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the animated series "Josie and the Pussycats"The animated series "Josie and the Pussycats" and "Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space" concluded its run this month. STAFF PICKS:Ventura Highway by AmericaRob leads off the staff picks with a song inspired by a drive that vocalist and writer Dewey Bunnell took in 1963 on the Pacific Coast. While his father was changing a flat tire, he and his brother stood on the side of the road near a road sign for Ventura, watching shapes in the clouds, inspiring the lyrics "alligator lizards in the air."Superstition by Stevie WonderLynch brings us the lead single from Wonder's fifteenth studio album "Talking Book." It's lyrics mention many popular superstitions and their negative consequences. Stevie Wonder collaborated with Jeff Beck on the demo for this song, and Beck would include his version of "Superstition" on his "Beck, Bogert & Appice" album.Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu by Johnny RiversBruce features the song originally recorded in 1957 by Huey "Piano" Smith. The original version went to number 52 on the pop charts, but the version we all know went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rivers was a member of the Wrecking Crew, and several musicians from that session group played on this single. It Never Rains in Southern California by Albert HammondWayne's closes out the staff picks with a storytelling song about a performer off to make it big. He fails in his efforts, but wants to hide the failure from those he left behind. Members of the Wrecking Crew also provide instrumentation on this song that went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. NOVELTY TRACK:Crazy Horses by The OsmondsThis surprisingly heavy performance from the Osmonds takes us out for this week. Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHSnoke is back on his BS, trying to seize military control of the galaxy. While Leia things they have a chance to fight back especially if Luke returns. Who can really say for sure. Poe is like why wait for Luke? Let's get out there! So he goes and tries to launch a counter strike against the First Order. Leia isn't having it and she tells him to disengage. He does not and with the help of some others from the resistance, destroys a First Order dreadnought and gets outta there via hyperspeed. Snoke is not pleased. Meanwhile, Rey hands Luke his lightsaber which he promptly throws it down the mountain. He's like I'm not coming, there's nothing I can do. Did you think I was just going to come back and magically save the day? It's not gonna happen. But Rey doesn't give up. She just follows Luke around the island for a while until Rey ends up feeling the force draw her to this cave with books - the original jedi text. It's at this point that Luke realizes that Rey may be special. Poe gets back to the base and Leia is not pleased with him, and it goes from bad to worse because the first order has tracked them down through light speed. Leia orders Poe and the otherrs to get back out there and fight them off. Kylo Ren, feeling the pressure from Snoke, is out there leading the attack, piloting his own ship. He is about to blow their ship up when he realizes that his mom is on board and hesitates. But one of the other pilots shoots and causes and expolosion which sends Leia flying into space. She is able to use the force to get herself back to the ship where the crew works to save her. Luke continues to say "nahhhhh" to Rey until R2-D2 shows up and convinces him to train Rey. But he's not happy about it and tells her that this training will show her why the Jedi needs to end. Finn is beeboppin around where he bumps into a mechanic named Rose. They figure out where the tracking device must be and Finn knows how to get them there. They take the plan to Poe and he says lets go for it. Back on the island, Rey and Kylo Ren begin communicating via the force. This chat is cut short when Luke Skywalker takes her away to give her her first lesson. He attempts to teach her how to feel the force and control it. Rey is able to see visions some small pebbles begins to float. She did it! However, she soon sees a vision of herself being pulled toward a dark pit. Luke yells at her, telling her to resist it. She does not. Suddenly water snaps Rey out of the vision. Luke says she saw the dark side of the Force, and she didn't even try to stop herself. He is very disappointed in her. He has seen this raw power once before and it did not end well. Luke explains that the last time he saw Kylo Ren, Young Ben as we call him around here, he was his student. He took him to train him in the force but Kylo gave in to the dark side and attempted to kill Luke by having a hut collapse on him. She tells Luke that he didn't fail Kylo Ren, Kyle Ren failed him.As Rey and Kylo continue to connect, Kylo tells Rey that Luke saw the power growing in Kylo and had attempted to get rid of him before he got stronger. There's this whole journey that Finn and Rose go on at a casino and these giant cat things. They meet DJ who overhears the two of them needing a code-breaker, and he offers his services. Rey has another conversation with Kylo and he tells her that what Luke told her is not true. He made that hut collapse because he woke up from slumber to see Luke holding a lightsaber over him, getting ready to kill him. They reach their hands out to each other and they touch hands Neil Dimond style. Sweet Caroline. Luke senses this and puts a stop to it. Rey confronts Luke over what Kylo told him. They fight a bit and then he explains that he could sense that there was nothing but darkness within Kylo and He did consider killing him but backed out of it, only for Kylo to see him with the light-saber and assume that he was indeed going to kill him. Rey tells him that she could see that all hope is not lost when she touched Kylo's hand and she's going to go to him. Luke is frustrated and is met by Yoda. He tells Yoda he's going to destroy the Jedi texts and Yoda is like one step ahead of you and does it and he tells Luke to help Rey. Rey arrives on the same ship as Kylo and is immediately taken prisoner. Rey tries to get Kylo to abandon the dark side but he's like it's you that will join the dark side. Kylo brings Rey to Snoke. Holdo, who is in charge while Leia is recovering, starts to set in motion plans to evacuate. Poe believes she is up to something and he attempts to stage a mutiny. Before his plans can go into effect, Leia appears after waking up and she blasts Poe. Leia allows Holdo's plan to go ahead and off they go. Snoke reveals that he created the connection between her and Kylo in an attempt to destroy Luke. He begins to use the force on her to get her to spill the beans on Luke. Finn, Rose, and DJ make it to the First Order's ship. They are captured and DJ immediately comes clean about their plan to save himself.Snoke attempts to get Kylo to kill Rey with his light-saber, but Kylo uses Luke's light-saber to impale Snoke and cut him in half. Rey and Kylo then team up to fight Snoke's soldiers. But don't get it twist - Kylo has not given into the light. He says it's time to let old things die and he invites Rey to join him in dark side. He even brings up how she knwos the truth about her parents - they were junk traders who sold her off, hoping that would cause Rey to give in. But she eventually resists. While that's happening, Holdo sacrifices herself to help the resistance get away. This also allows Finn & Rose to escape right as they're about to be killed. Kylo Ren is like I'M THE CAPTAIN NOW! And he orders gigantic walkers to go to the Resistance HQ. Poe leads Finn, Rose, and a few others to fight back. Rey and Chewie come down with the Falcon to help which really makes Kylo mad. Finn is about to sacrifice himself but Rose crashes her ship into his to stop him. Finn goes to her and asks why she did it. She tells him they always fight for what they love. She kisses small ones and then passes out. It's not looking good. Leia is feeling defeated. Suddenly, Luke arrives. They chat a bit and then he goes to take care of business. Luke goes out to face the First Order by himself. Kylo orders they use every blaster they can on him, which they do. When the smoke clear, Luke is there...unphased by Kylo's blasters. Poe sees this and realizes that Luke is distracting the baddies to allow them to escape. But their escape is blocked by rocks. Luckily, Rey shows up to clear the rocks and get them free. Kylo goes down to face Luke himself. They duel with their light-sabers, and Kylo attempts to strike Luke with a killing blow, only to realize Luke is a hologram... he still on his island babyyyyyy. Luke tells Kylo that he will not be the last Jedi. He vanished and we see him back on the island. HE finally vanishes and becomes one with the force. Rey tells Leia that she can sense that Luke is now gone, and she asks what will become of the Resistance now. Leia tells her they have what they need to rebuild. On Canto Bight, a trio of stable children that previously encountered Finn and Rose are telling each other the story of Luke Skywalker. Their master comes over to scold them to force them back to work. The boy they had found in the stable goes outside and uses the Force to draw a broom to his hand. He looks up at the sky to see the Falcon flying overhead, and, with Rose's Resistance ring on his finger, he raises his broom like a light-saber.

The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
Send us a textThrough grief comes purpose. When Kaden Collins lost his grandmother to cancer on Valentine's Day 2020, he transformed his pain into something powerful – a platform where independent musicians could share their stories and build community. "We can't get anywhere without each other," Collins explains, his passion for connection evident throughout our conversation. The journey from "The Spokane Man" to "The KGC Show" reveals how one question can redirect a creative path. When producer Jeff Panzer asked, "Why are you making a name for your city when you could be making a name for yourself?" Collins discovered his true direction. This moment of mentorship highlights the power of surrounding yourself with people who see your potential clearly.Jay shares his own backstage story of spending Thanksgiving at Alison Krauss's house, sparking a discussion about her return to touring with Union Station after 14 years. The conversation flows naturally into venue preferences, with Tiffany favoring intimate settings for acoustic performances while Jay appreciates larger arenas for rock shows. Kaden's perspective as both a podcast host and music fan adds depth to this exploration of how setting shapes musical experience. Our interactive segment on songs featuring girls' names brings out nostalgic favorites from "Beth" to "Sweet Caroline," demonstrating how music weaves through our personal histories. When Tiffany mentions not knowing Kiss's "Beth," Jay's playful "You're fired!" becomes the running joke of the evening, creating those authentic moments of friendship that make podcast conversations feel like sitting with old friends.Beyond music, we delve into what holds value in our lives – literal and figurative. While Tiffany sees no appeal in expensive designer handbags, Jay admits his appreciation for quality bags and accessories. Kaden's passion for vinyl records and good food reveals how our spending habits reflect our deeper values. The conversation reminds us that quality matters most in the things we truly care about, whether that's music, relationships, or the creative work we put into the world.Join us for this heartfelt exploration of music, memory, and meaning with Kaden Collins. Susie is still laughing about Sarah's technique for scaring off bears, but turns out, Sarah isn't wrong. We hear about the problem bear she's about to encounter at camp. We discuss how men are animals at sporting events, but also how "sports anthems" are created. We find out why Sweet Caroline, Livin on a Prayer, and Don't Stop Believing became ubiquitous at games despite having nothing to do with them. Denmark had to outlaw spicy ramen because they thought it was a public health risk, and we debate whether that was necessary. We learn about the science of illusions through the eyes of birds, why certain tricks do and don't work on birds, and why our thumbs have something to do with sleight of hand and the success of a magic trick...Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Get an exclusive 10% off your first order at https://thrivecausemetics.com/BRAINCANDYGet 25% off your first month for a limited time at https://ritual.com/BRAINCANDYCancel your unwanted subscriptions by going to https://rocketmoney.com/BRAINCANDYSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We go into our archive to feature our 2005 interview with Neil Diamond. The new Broadway show A Beautiful Noise is based on his life and features his songs. Some of his most famous songs include Sweet Caroline, Solitary Man, and Girl, You'll be A Woman Soon. We'll also remember two-time Oscar-winner Glenda Jackson, who died June 15th. She was 87. Terry Gross spoke with her in 2019 when she was starring on Broadway in a production of King Lear, as Lear. Jackson also served in British Parliament for over two decades.
