Kelsey Norman is a Fellow for the Middle East and Director of the Women's Rights, Human Rights, and Refugees Program at Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy. Her new book, Aiding Autocrats: Migration Management, Governance and Repression in Africa, examines how wealthy countries increasingly use foreign aid to persuade other governments to stop migrants before they reach Europe or the United States—and the unintended political consequences of those policies. In this episode, Kelsey explains what she calls "migration management aid" and how it has shaped relationships with countries including Turkey, Libya, and Rwanda. We also discuss whether more recent policies, including the Trump administration's deportation agreements with countries such as Eswatini, fit into this broader pattern. The conversation then turns to one of the book's central arguments: that outsourcing migration control can undermine democracy and good governance by strengthening authoritarian governments and giving them new resources and leverage. We conclude by discussing whether there is a better way for wealthy countries to cooperate with governments on migration without reinforcing repression or sacrificing human rights.

The Indian state has been digitalising land records across the country for many years now, and more aggressively since 2016 as part of the Digital India Initiative. There is growing evidence, however, that rather than empowering vulnerable communities, digital governance has often had the effect of dispossessing them of their rights – seen most clearly in  the context of Aadhaar and KYC-related withholding of welfare benefits and MGNREGA wages - and it seems to be happening again with land records digitalisation. Ground reports from Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand by Sushmita, an independent journalist, indicate that digitalisation of land records has aided the dispossession of Dalit and Adivasi farmers by local elites operating in cahoots with corrupt officials.  We speak with Sushmita on the impact of land digitisation on vulnerable communities. Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty to murdering seven women and admitted to killing an eighth. That should have been the end of the legal battle. It wasn't. The son of Valerie Mack — one of the victims Heuermann admitted to killing — has filed a sweeping civil lawsuit that goes after the people who were closest to the convicted killer: his ex-wife Asa Ellerup and their daughter Victoria Heuermann.The allegations in this complaint are staggering in their scope. Wrongful death. Aiding and abetting. Civil conspiracy. Unjust enrichment. Fraud. The lawsuit accuses both women of knowing about the murders or deliberately choosing not to know — what the legal system calls willful blindness. It alleges they had access to a secured room with a large metal door in the basement of the Massapequa Park home and that they profited from the crimes through over a million dollars in media payments for a Peacock documentary.But the defense has significant ground to stand on. Prosecutors have said the family was out of town during the killings. Victoria was approximately three years old when Valerie Mack was killed in 2000 — yet the complaint names her as a defendant in concealing that murder. Law enforcement searched the Heuermann home, recovered evidence, and never charged either woman. And the plaintiff's attorney has a documented history of making extreme public accusations against this family that have not resulted in criminal action.I break down every angle of this case — the emotional weight behind the filing, the legal reality the plaintiff has to overcome, and the moral complexity that no verdict can resolve. The chapter divides flattery into nine categories, with the rabbi focusing on the first and its severe consequences.Key teachings:First category of flattery — Praising or speaking smoothly to a known rasha (wicked person), ramai (deceiver), or thief—saying “you did nothing wrong” or “you're fine” when they are guilty.Multiple transgressions —Failure to rebuke (lo tochiah) when obligated—strengthens evildoers' hands.Not being zealous for truth—punishment for abandoning emes. Aiding sin—by reassuring them, prevents teshuva (repentance).Desecration of God's Name (chillul Hashem) if public—makes sin appear acceptable.Flattery = smooth tongue, not praise — It's saying one thing while thinking another (echad b'peh v'echad b'lev)—justifying evil, currying favor, or avoiding confrontation.Severe punishment — Flatterers cannot dwell in God's presence (one of four groups barred: liars, slanderers, flatterers, etc.). There's not a single question on the SAT or ACT that absolutely requires a calculator to solve. So are these powerful tools even necessary, and if so, where do they make a difference? Amy and Mike invited educators Vinny Madera and Tony Miglio to explore the importance of calculators on the SAT and ACT. What are five things you will learn in this episode? Tutoring in some capacity since college, Vinny decided in 2007 to become a full-time tutor and works directly with over 800 students per year through his classes and individual students. Aiding numerous school districts, private institutions, and tutoring companies, Vinny has developed all Test Prep Wizards' reporting software and has written the company's SAT and ACT manuals, which have been licensed by many school districts as an efficient, low-cost means of helping their students.  Vinny is a huge nerd fan of data and statistics, moonlighting as a math enthusiast at Fairfield University, where he teaches a variety of math courses and freshman experience workshops. He brings this love of numbers and trends to Test Prep Wizards in the form of its state-of-the-art analysis programming. The Interfaith Movement for Immigrant Justice began more than 20 years ago as an extension of the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition. Its shorthand is IMIrJ (pronounced “emerge”) with the r standing for refugee. IMIrJ has become an independent nonprofit, drawing “faith communities and people of conscience” into the effort to protect the civil rights and well-being of immigrant families. Members and volunteers provide accompaniment for immigrants to appointments with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, financial support and other resources to immigrants.
