Mildred Muhammad & Marc Guberti
For three weeks in October 2002, the Washington DC area was terrorized by a series of sniper attacks. Someone was randomly shooting and killing people throughout the district, and the Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Piecing together scant eyewitness Clues, police began searching for the gunman, and ultimately found, and arrested, 41 year old John Allen Muhammad and 17 year old Lee Boyd Malvo. Both were eventually convicted, and John Allen Muhammad was sentenced to death. In the fall of 2009, I met Muhammad's wife, Mildred. Muhammad had planned to kill her, in a custody dispute over their children, and make her death appear to be one of the series of random sniper killings.
Mildred Muhammad talks about her latest book "Being Abused While Teleworking During Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic: A Safety Guide for Victims of Domestic Abuse/Violence & Awareness for Bystanders" Seclusion of victims of domestic abuse and violence has sparked the need for new measures since it is unclear how long teleworking will continue at this level. As the ex-wife of the DC Sniper, Mildred wrote this guide that will address the abuses victims of domestic abuse and violence are facing during this pandemic. She understands the danger to the victims’ safety and hopes that bystanders will assist them because it is imperative. Also keep in mind that domestic violence is a worldwide epidemic.

On this episode of en(gender)ed, our guest is Rachel Louise Snyder, an Associate Professor of Literature at American University and the author of Fugitive Denim, What We've Lost is Nothing and the recently released, No Visible Bruises. We speak with Rachel today about her book and experience as a journalist and her coverage of the people, practices, and policies that are deftly portrayed in No Visible Bruises, shining a light on the epidemic of domestic violence and the ways in which our systems have failed to protect victims and survivors. Through her stories of victims, perpetrators, law enforcement, advocates, Rachel's book debunks the myths that surround domestic violence and conveys an urgency for us as individuals and as a society to reframe how we view and respond to these acts of personal terrorism. On today's show, Tom speaks with Mildred Muhammad, the ex-wife of John Allen Muhammed, the DC sniper who along with an accomplice shot 13 people, killing 10 of them at multiple locations throughout the Washington metropolitan area in October 2002. Mildred Muhammad has made it her life’s work to remind us that the other very important dimension to these killing is that of domestic violence. John Muhammad killed other people to disguise his primary intent: that of killing his ex-wife. Mildred has become an advocate for victims of domestic violence. She has written five books, the latest of which is called I’m Still Standing: Crawling Out of the Darkness Into the Light.
Some experts say domestic violence is a common thread in mass shootings. Mildred Muhammad, D.C. Sniper John Allen Muhammad's ex-wife, said she knows about the connection first-hand. She joins me in the BalmShelter to describe her living nightmare. It is not just “a” story – it is “one of the many” stories built on the experiences of domestic violence and the depths of its terror. After her children were kidnapped and her inability to go on living without them, she began the silent struggle of looking for them, knowing that if she exposed herself, John Allen Muhammad would locate her and kill her. She was triumphant in her struggle to get through those 18 months of not knowing where her children were and re-gained full custody of them. She fled from her estranged husband and moved to Maryland with the children. She was frightened during the horrific sniper shootings, sat through court proceedings during the trial, and last but not least, began re-gaining her strength to start a non-profit organization, After The Trauma, to assist survivors of domestic violence.
Please welcome special WOMENACE, award-winning, global keynote speaker Mildred Muhammad – formerly married to the DC Sniper, John Allen Muhammad. Did you know John was killing innocent people as a cover because he was planning to kill his estranged wife and play the part of grieving husband to win custody of their children? Mildred explains the reasons for the long media blackout of this information as well as many of her other truths that are finally being heard.
How did Mildred feel when John was finally caught? How did Mildred and the kids handle his execution? After the trauma, are the long lasting effects, the after shock of anxiety, nightmares or even PTSD. Listen to Mildred explain what she did to ensure she and her children would enjoy an emotionally healthy life.
Traumatic events take time to overcome. Time to accept that it happened, time to process the details, and time to do the work to heal. Most of us experience trauma among family and friends but this heroic sister disappeared into federal protective custody after her ex-husband murdered ten people and critically injured three, in a twisted plot to kill her. Under the judgmental eyes of millions, she and her children had to endure, hateful accusations and blame for his actions. In this interview, called the best of the decade, Mildred Muhammad and I candidly discuss her ex-husband’s descent into withdrawal, the 18-month search for her kids and the process she and the kids used to fight their way back to living an emotionally healthy life. Watch and comment! I’d really like to know your thoughts.
