A lot of people think that once they decide they want to start a capital campaign, they can just jump right in and start raising money. But it takes a lot of planning and preparation to make sure your campaign is successful. So, how do you know if your small nonprofit is ready to launch a capital campaign? On today's episode, we're talking all about Capital Campaigns with Sabrina Walker-Hernandez, Certified Consultant, Coach, Facilitator & Best Selling Author helping small nonprofits build relationships that convert into more donations. She's worked for 25 years in our sector from direct services operations all the way to executive leadership, and she took an organization with an annual budget of 750,000 to 2.5 million a year operations and launched a $12 million capital campaign in the US's third poorest county. Myths that Sabrina wants us to walk away from:You can start a capital campaign right away: If you are a small nonprofit, you need to build your annual campaign before you go into a capital campaign because capital campaigns are all about individuals and relationships. And you want those individuals connected to you and your work before you ask them to dig deep into their pockets. You can ask any of your donors to give to your capital campaign: Yes - you can ask each and every donor to give towards your capital campaign (it's not just about the big gifts), BUT you really need to have a relationship with them before you go and ask them for a special gift. You can't take a person from zero to $250,000.Sabrina's thoughts on Capital CampaignRelationships first. Start with individual giving as you build your foundation. You have to have a relationship with people before you go and ask them for the amount of money that you're going to need to complete a capital campaign. Feasibility Study. Have a conversation with the individuals in the community to let them know about what you want to do and share your vision. Seek advice from people who want to be part of the campaign. Identify the key person. The executive director doesn't necessarily have to lead, but you can identify a co-chair to lead the campaign or even hire a consultant that can guide you through the campaign. Phases of the campaign. You can start to secure your top gifts from your top donors and board members first. Depending on your strategy, you can also have mid-level, the corporate approach, and the foundation approach. Lastly, you can also have a community approach to get everyone involved. Favourite Quotes from Today's EpisodePost your favorite quote on social media to share with us!“People will follow success. When we first launched this capital campaign and we talked about $12 million, people did not think it could be done. So we had to come out strong and so people will follow success, invest upfront in getting those top donors on board. It will break or make your capital campaign.”Resources from this EpisodeSupporting World HopeThe Good PartnershipOur friends at Keela are offering you 40% off your first year's subscription of their donor database. Grief Is Difficult Whether It’s a Pet or a Loved One Deb joins me to talk about the intersection of grief and brainspotting. Grief is one of the most difficult emotions for humans to process, regardless of whether it’s from the death of a loved one, a pet, or a different experience of loss. One of Deb’s specialties is working with people who have lost a pet. The death of our pets impacts many of us just as hard, if not harder than the loss of a loved one. We all know how good it feels to sit and cuddle with our pets when times are tough. That sense of comfort and wholeness gets so many of us through difficult times. That’s one of the biggest reasons losing a pet is difficult. Deb explains what stages of grief look like when our pets die; they’re not altogether dissimilar to when we lose a loved one. Deb talks us through a practice we can use when we’re settling into our feelings of grief. She explains how this practice can help calm us down. It’s called brainspotting, and Deb has been using it since 2003. How Brainspotting Helps You Process Brainspotting helps you process difficult information and return to a state of calm. The three stages brainspotting helps guide you through are survival, homeostasis, and restoration. Our brains are at their best when they’re in homeostasis and restoration. In this episode, Deb actually guides us through the brainspotting process. We take a few minutes to guide ourselves into the right space and sitting, breathing, and feeling our brains return to homeostasis. Just like every new technique, brainspotting is something you need to consistently practice in order for it to have a positive benefit on your life and mental health. When you use it regularly, you’ll have a much easier time of returning to that state of calm. Finally, I really just want to give you permission to be kind to yourself. 2020 has been hard for all of us and it’s absolutely okay if you’re experiencing feelings of grief and overwhelm. I hope that Deb’s advice and brainspotting technique can help you return to your own natural state of homeostasis. Do something to get yourself out of your comfort zone. Collage, dance, chase your dog, watch a new series on Netflix. Get out there so you can get back into your zone. As always, you can ask me anything and let me hear your thoughts in the comments on the episode page. If you have questions, email team@drannacabeca.com. Grief is one of the most difficult emotions for humans to process. I'm joined by grief therapist, Deb Antinori, to talk about how you can support yourself with brainspotting, a technique designed to ground and calm yourself. Key Takeaways: Identify what feels good, comfortable, or at least “less bad” in your body, then avert your gaze and try to return to a state of homeostasis. [26:00] Be gentle with yourself right now. The world is going through a collective trauma, so cut yourself some slack. Sometimes we meet entrepreneurs who amaze us and Jonathan Ogurchak, the Co-founder and CEO of http://stackpharmacy.com/, is one of those people. Jonathan stepped away from a lucrative career as a pharmacist to build a platform that could transform the way #pharma business gets done, and he did so as a father of two children with one on the way and he literally started this great business in his garage (and here we must pause for quick salute to his wonderful wife). In this episode, we hear the #startup story of Stack, a compliance management software designed to simplify the “outside of the dispense” complexities associated with running successful pharmacy organizations; however, the principles and functions of the STACK information ecosystem principles can translate to multiple industries. Jonathan is also Managing Partner of Rhythm Group, a consulting and technology solutions organization, and is a Certified Consultant with Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC). Jonathan has designed programs and services for both Accredo and PANTHERx Specialty Pharmacy focusing on implementing innovative uses for technology, including high-touch pharmacist-driven programs focused on dosing efficiency, clinical monitoring of patient outcomes, and integrated patient engagement. He is on faculty for the Master of Pharmacy Business Administration (MPBA) program through the University of Pittsburgh, leading the Specialty Pharmacy Management curriculum. He currently serves on the editorial board for Specialty Pharmacy Times, holds CSP Certification through the Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board, and serves as an Educational Consultant for the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy (NASP). In this episode, we continue our exploration of the application of the Brainspotting modality. Brainspotting is a modality discovered by Dr. David Grand. Please visit www.brainspotting.com to learn more. Our guest, Deb Antinori, discusses the neuroscience involved in our reactions to the COVID19 crisis. Here are the five mantras from this episode: Mantra #1: Be gentle with yourself Mantra #2: We are in a state of existential trauma Mantra #3: The COVID19 disruption affects where we function in terms of the three parts of the brain (survival, homeostasis, restoration). These brain parts interact with the HPA axis and affect cortisol levels. Cortisol levels can affect the hippocampus and thus memory. So if you are not feeling at the top of your game mentally right now, there is a neuroscientific explanation. Return to Mantra #1 and Be gentle with yourself. Mantra #4: Learn to calm your alarm states during the COVID19 crisis. (Refer to healing techniques and the need for contemplative states in this interview with Dr. Mario Martinez: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUOGxJ97gkI&t=464s). Mantra #5: Our assumptive world has been turned on its head. It is normal to feel the need to grieve the loss of this known world. Today’s guest on the show is Carrie Clarke, a small business consultant that helps business owners get to their next level. What I loved about interviewing Carrie is that she totally debunks the myth that you should have it all figured out right out of the gate. As she says, “action brings clarity” around getting crystal clear on who you serve and how. It’s such an important nugget of wisdom because we let this fear paralyze us sometimes and it holds us back from jumping in. But it’s only with jumping that we fix that fear!On top of that, Carrie and I talk:Why avatar exercises are a backwards way to find your ideal client (there, I said it)Why throwing spaghetti against the wall – with a time limit – may actually be the smart way to get going! Why you shouldn’t be paying for advertising when you’re just starting outWhy you may actually know what’s next in your business (but can’t hear it through the other noise out there)The power of getting curiousWhy you must get a mentorCarrie's best quotes:“We don’t realize that current roles we’re in could be teaching us things for later…”“I don’t know anyone whose business hasn’t done a complete 180 in the first year.”“I truly think people know what the next best step is but they just can’t hear it through the noise”“Our brain is bonkers powerful…”You always hear me yammering on about this stuff, I know… but if you don’t want to take it from me, take it from the CEOs like Carrie that I talk with. Buckle up and enjoy this one. Find Carrie on LinkedIn, Facebook, and her Next Level consulting siteCarrie D. Clarke, J.D. is the founder and CEO of Next Level Coaching & Consulting. As a small business consultant she helps individuals and entrepreneurs reach the NEXT LEVEL. Combining a background as an Attorney, M&A Risk Advisor, and International Management Consultant, Carrie has a unique and integrated approach to helping executive leaders, business owners, and high-achievers reach their goals and grow profits. Danielle started in the corporate world in the food and tourism industry. She loved her job and from an outside perspective, people envied her position - but she didn’t love how much it was taking her away from her daughter and her family. She also felt like she was building someone else’s dream instead of hers. She always had a burning desire to be an entrepreneur but didn’t truly know what this looked like for her, and once she had her daughter this desire grew. Danielle eventually came to a breaking point and her Mom took her to a Bob Proctor event. She remembers going into the event thinking that she had already read all of the books and been to all of the seminars. She remembers very clearly this moment in the seminar: Bob Proctor said “Your results don’t lie. Your results are a direct result of your thinking and they tell us where you’re at. The first thing you need to do is to take responsibility for your results and stop playing victim and then committed to doing everything I say to do. If you do what I say, you can have anything you want.” After this seminar, she jumped into Bob's program and six months later she tripled her income and started winning the company trips with her network marketing company and she was even on stage for an award! She shares that it looked like it came out of nowhere because her activity did not change. This is because success is 5% strategy, and 95% mindset - so as soon as she knew how to take responsibility for her thoughts, everything shifted. "It was like magic," she said, and she started feeling better about herself. Fast forward, Danielle jumped into learning the teachings of Bob Proctor and became a Certified Consultant and Coach so that she could help other people how to do what she did. Bob said personally to her at one time, "That old corporate income of 100K per year .. I want you to make that your monthly income. Anyone can do that and I want you to make it your goal to do that.” Hesitant, Danielle made this her goal and 18 months later, that's exactly what she did, her monthly income is now 100K. She used Bob's material to attract clients; "It’s about working smarter not harder, and understanding the laws and most importantly, that thoughts become things." she says. If you are ready to make a change in your life once and for all too, first, acknowledge yourself for listening to the voice inside of your head that is wanting more and then start with taking pen to paper to list all of the things you truly desire for your life. From there, ask yourself if you have had enough of that struggle. People will make a change when their desire is strong enough, or when they have had enough. Most of us say that we’re ready to make a change ... we say we want it, but yet nothing ever shifts. Always keep in mind too that your subconscious mind will keep you playing small … our mind plays tricks on us to NOT do the things we know we should be because it doesn't want you to change. Your subconscious mind sees change as discomfort, and discomfort as danger - and this is why most people stay playing small. Then ask yourself what you would do next if you had infinite resources? Allow your mind to open up and fantasize and then write out this fantasy life and go back to the impact it would have on your life if this was your new reality. Bet on yourself and jump in and then find the help through a coach or community because no one can do this on their own. So you want to build or renovate a Passive House? Your specialist team may need to include a Certified Passive House Consultant to help test and measure your Passive House design. Let me introduce to you Luc Plowman, of Detail Green. Luc is a Passive House Certified Consultant and Certifier. In fact, he’s only one of 2 Passive House certified building certifiers in the country, and there’s only about 50 world-wide. Luc was brought in on the Owl Woods Passive House project as Talina wasn’t certified yet. He assisted with reviewing and auditing the design, running it through the Passive House modelling tool, and providing feedback and advice on what needed to be included and amended in order for the home to reach required benchmarks. SHOW NOTES: Meet Luc Plowman, from Detail Green. Detail Green has a wealth of building design, engineering, construction and sustainability performance experience. This includes both local and international projects in residential, commercial, industrial and educational buildings across multiple green building standards. Luc is a Sustainability Engineer. With 15 years experience he has been involved in a wide range of green building and sustainability projects across Australia. He’s a director of Detail Green based in Beechworth, Victoria. With a background in the commercial building industry and a range of Green Building qualifications Luc provides specialist ESD input to all areas of the built environment. Luc is both a Certified Passive House Consultant & Building Certifier and one of Australia’s most experienced Passive House professionals. In this episode, I ask Luc ... How do you describe what Passive House is? What is your role on the Owl Woods Passive House Project? Is this how you’re normally involved in projects? You’re a Certified Passive House Consultant ... what does that mean? How did you get involved in this type of work - what is your professional background? what made you choose to become a Certified Consultant? Is a Passive House not really a Passive House if a Certified Passive House Consultant is not involved? As a Certified Consultant, do you find that homeowners come find you because they really want to do this type of home and they’ve first done a lot of investigation and research themselves? Or do you find that there’s an interest, and then still lots of education to do on your part? What misconceptions do you see about Passive House? I know homeowners will say to me “oh my climate is quite mild, I don’t need to be this extreme about my home” ... what would you say to them? Is there anywhere that Passive House is ‘over the top’ as an approach? What key tips do you have for homeowners considering this as an approach for their renovation or new build? Passive House can seem initially like a complex process of data and analysis. However, Luc shows us its fundamental aspects and the opportunity this methodology has to help us predict the performance of our homes - before we build them. Listen to the episode now. This episode is brought to you by my online course “How to Get it Right in Your Reno or New Home”. Study: An empirical examination comparing the Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment approach and Psychological Skills Training for the mental health and sport performance of female student athletes Abstract: The present study was a randomised controlled trial investigating the effectiveness of the Mindfulness-Acceptance-Commitment (MAC) approach compared to traditional Psychological Skills Training (PST) for the mental health and sport performance of female collegiate athletes. Two hypotheses were proposed: (a) participants in the MAC group would demonstrate reduced behavioural issues, emotional distress, and psychological symptoms, and increased athletic performance when compared to those in the PST group; (b) MAC participants would exhibit reduced emotion dysregulation and increased psychological flexibility and dispositional mindfulness, compared to PST participants. Participants included 18 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III female student athletes who were randomly assigned into either the MAC or PST group based upon pre-intervention levels of distress; and were assessed pre-intervention, post-intervention, and at 1-month follow-up. A mixed-model ANOVA analysis revealed that the MAC effectively reduced Substance Use, Hostility, and Emotion Dysregulation over time when compared to the PST group. Several within-group differences also emerged, as MAC participants demonstrated reduced Generalised Anxiety, Eating Concerns, and Psychological Distress, as well as increased psychological flexibility from post-intervention to one-month follow-up. As per coach ratings, MAC participants also evidenced improved sport performance from pre-intervention to post-intervention. Results suggest that the MAC is an effective intervention for the mental health and sport performance needs of female collegiate athletes.
