Both Bob and Doug were youth pastors, Doug was obviously better than Bob, but I digress. This episode Bob and Doug talk with youth ministry legend Tic Long who has seen the scope from the early years of youth ministry being a thing until now. It has the feel of a PBS documentary that could be next Ken Burns project. Tic Long has spent most of his adult life in youth ministry and leadership. He worked at Youth Specialties for 34 years. When we think about legendary youth speakers, Duffy Robbins is one of the first people to come to mind. He has been challenging, inspiring, and entertaining students for over 40 years. His warm style and quick wit has influenced many generations of students and youth workers. In addition to being a sought-after conference speaker, Duffy served for many years as Professor of Youth Ministries at Eastern University near Philadelphia, as well as a key member of the Youth Specialties speaking team. Recently, he and Maggie moved to the western part of Pennsylvania to take a similar position at Grove City College (Steve's Alma Mater). Following the raising of their two daughters, Maggie pursued her passion by becoming a Spiritual Director, and each year brings her special gift to the Youth Specialties Conference. Despite some confusion during the interview, we were able to determine they've been married for 46 years! For the official resume, Duffy has his D.Min. in Youth and Family Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary, and is the author of numerous books including Ministry of Nurture, This Way to Youth Ministry: An Introduction to the Adventure, Speaking to Teenagers (which he co-wrote with Doug Fields), Youth Ministry Nuts and Bolts and Enjoy the Silence (which he co-wrote with Maggie). We were looking forward to this for 365 days! We were back at the National Youth Workers Convention for the second time as exhibitors. We had a blast meeting people from all over the country who are serving faithfully in youth ministries large and small. We gave away a suitcase full of fuzzy socks and llamacorns, enough stickers to cover the earth, and a few t-shirts and fuzzy llamas too. What a great time! We also had the privilege of being part of the official program at NYWC, thanks to Josh Griffin and our friends at DYM. We will release our Sherpa Legend Interview with Duffy and Maggie Robbins soon! But on today's episode, we share the answers we received to our question, "What is the greatest advantage of youth ministry in your 20s/30s/40s/50s?" Two youth pastors from different churches in the same town develop a friendship. Their relationship is so encouraging to each other that they begin to wonder if perhaps it could also be an encouragement to other youth workers. They decide to start a podcast, which leads to all kinds of cool things, not the least of which is an even deeper friendship and sharpening as youth workers. Sound familiar? Yes, it's our story. But it's also the story of Zac Workun and Chad Higgins from Youth Ministry Booster in Tulsa, OK. About four years ago, Zac and Chad leveraged their friendship to start what was then known as the After 9 podcast. That eventually morphed into a entrepreneurial endeavor known as Youth Ministry Booster. YMB has become a multi-faceted, much-needed resource. Youth workers from all over the country seek out YMB to find mutual encouragement, sharpening, coaching, and of course, podcasts. We have been fans of YMB from afar, and met them briefly last fall at the National Youth Workers Convention. We thought it would be fun to connect our shows. Chad was unable to join us, but we had a great conversation with Zac about the value of networks, the joys of longevity, the differences in ministry culture from the Bible Belt to the East Coast, and the mountain of sherpa-related metaphors that can be used in one episode. Our Third Legend -- Josh Griffin We all know Josh Griffin as one of the leading voices in youth ministry with over 20 years experience in the trenches, most recently as the High School Pastor at Saddleback Church. He's the co-founder of DownloadYouthMinistry.com and been in 300+ episodes of the DYM Podcast with Doug Fields. He's created more than 50 youth ministry resources and authored several books including 99 Thoughts for Small Group Leaders. Josh and his wife Angela have 4 kids, which now includes 2 teenagers of their own. What you may not know is that before he went to Saddleback (the "Mecca" of youth ministry), Josh was at a church with 30 kids in the farmlands of Michigan, working a job he almost quit two years in. So how did a young man who had never worked in a "big church" become the successor to Doug Fields at Saddleback? It's an amazing story, and one that provides a lesson we all can learn about being open-handed with what God has entrusted to us. Happy Thanksgiving from two turkeys with a podcast! It's Thanksgiving Week -- one of our favorite weeks of the year, because it means the end of the fall youth ministry sprint and a chance to relax, spend time with our families, eat, watch football and take a nap. That, folks, is a good combination! We just got back from the National Youth Workers Convention in St. Louis. Wow, what a great time! It was wonderful being with our "tribe" of youth workers from all over the country. It's like a family reunion without the crazy uncle and awkward third cousin. Oh wait... Anyway, we had an absolute blast hanging out in the exhibit hall, meeting people and introducing them to this podcast. It's hard to believe we just started this thing in January--two joes from Maryland--and there we were with a giant banner like we were a legitimate thing!? What a privilege to meet so many faithful youth workers. Thanks for stopping by to say hi. We got some great material for a future episode, and we also discovered that people love llamas. A lot. A little insanely so, if you ask us. If you got a t-shirt, congratulations on your great luck rolling snake eyes of double sixes. It's a good thing we were all perfect teenagers. It's a good thing we never made a mistake, got into trouble, or smashed a shopping cart against a light pole with our car. That's why we are such good and holy youth workers. Okay, that's probably a lie. A huge lie. The truth is, we all mess up, and as teenagers we all made our fair share of mistakes. We moved on thanks to the grace of God and the kindness of people. In this episode of the Youth Ministry Sherpas podcast, Steve and Mathew share a few (mild) stories of their idiotic younger days. (We edited out the really bad things because we don't want anyone to think less of us.) Steve shares his struggles with a recent real-life situation he still isn't sure he handled well (without giving away too much information), while Mathew shares his clever interrogation techniques gleaned from hours of watching Law and Order. What do we do when students mess up? How do we go about restoring them? What is the posture of our heart? How do we deal with the fallout in our group, and in our church? Is it possible to find a balance between accountability and grace that follows the example of Jesus? Each situation is unique. Each is messy. And each affords us the challenge of trying to navigate the circumstances to bring restoration and forward progress. After a six-week break for summer youth trips and vacations, we are excited to be back for the fall with a new season of Youth Ministry Sherpas! First, we have some catching up to do. We've been all over the place since we last recorded. Steve spent a week in paradise (Jamaica) celebrating his 30th anniversary with his wife, and led a mission team to Greece, where he danced the Hokey Pokey and did his best imitation of the first land animal. Mathew took half the population of Maryland on his annual mission to Peru. The mission was a huge success, although Mathew failed in the one task he was given -- get a picture with a llama. In today's episode, we talk about the indisputable seasonal aspect of youth ministry, and how important it is to kick things off well in the early fall. Fall is the time for big DREAMS. It's the time to create an event that's a big DRAW. And it's our opportunity to DOWNLOAD our dreams to our leaders and students so that we can see them come to fruition and fulfill the unique vision God has given us for this year.
