This week's show, where we're speaking with Utah author Macy Lewis, is being brought to you by the letter P. This brings us to the middle of January, Braille Literacy Month, as we speak with Macy about braille and how it and literacy brought her to the writing she does now, as she describes the 26 Days of Braille she's been doing all month long on her social media by using a muffin tin and tennis balls to show what braille letters look like. As this airs live first, this one on January 16, this puts us at the 16th letter of the alphabet: P. With braille letters, they can stand for entire words to make the best use of space and in the interest of time. P is people. Perfect pitch people. On top of a loving nod toward Sesame Street, this week on Outlook we discuss Macy's school years, first at a school for the blind and then mainstreamed into a public school for the rest of her education. Lewis shares about the time it took to become fast with braille and her love of writing collaboratively when creating characters and plot lines for everything from romantic suspense to children's books about a blue dragon and an octopus by the name of Octie. Macy collaborates with everyone from family and friends to her local aquarium, planetarium, and the zoo when writing about animals. So from TBR overwhelm to her wanting to communicate about braille to show people what it is, in her words to share what braille “is, what it looks like, what it means.” - Macy Lewis opens up about where on the blindness spectrum she is, her years of anxiety over reading out loud, and her love of music, her and sibling co-host Brian being “perfect pitch people.” Macy Lewis and sibling co-host Kerry bond over writing and the big questions, for writing and as a blind writer in particular. Stay tuned for new words from Lewis, “Weathering the Storm”, her first time writing featuring blind characters, slated for release later this year. In the meantime, follow Macy on her socials and by checking out her Amazon author page here: https://www.amazon.com/author/macylewis Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AuthorMacyLewis Twitter: https://twitter.com/MacyLewis6

Israel was baptized through the Red Sea. They sang a song of victory and rejoiced in the grace of God. But... most of those celebrating that day did not make it home to the promised land. Why not? Pride. They began to feel entitled, and that caused them to turn attention from God to themselves. Part of our episode today will investigate the  mistakes of Israel in I Corinthians 10. How can we be less like them, more dependent on God, and beautifully humble? We will also list 8 things from Kevin Deyoung's book, Crazy Busy. These words, all starting with the letter P (its a Letter P day!) represent more subtle ways that pride sneaks into our lives. Having sought humility in these things, you and I will be better positioned, at the foot of God's throne, to be more useful to Him."A Manifestation of the Many Manifestations of Pride" (pg 35-38)- People Pleasing- Pats on the Back- Performance Evaluation- Proving Myself- Possessions- Prestige- Pity- PostingOoh, I see some of my own pride in that list. But what does our year look like if we know where we need to be humble? If we ask the question: "is this about me? And if it was about God and others, how different would it look?" May the Lord, who has blessed us in His grace and Spirit and Son, use us well and give us a life of gratitude, thankfulness, and service.

Bob Dylan [41:16] "Billy 4" Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid Columbia KC 32460 1973 I have a particular soft spot for this Dylan album. The film and soundtrack came into my life at a time when I was becoming increasingly interested in film and aspect ratios like Cinemascope. And also at a time when I was making art that was making art exploring the myth of the American West and native American folklore, especially Old Man Coyote the trickster. In this film and soundtrack we get both the myth of the American West (Billy the Kid) and the trickster (Dylan is nothing if not a trickster). The film itself is a bit of a Peckinpah shaggy dog, but worth the early 70s antihero hubris. I prefer Newman's confused teen Left Handed Gun (https://youtu.be/9BhhGqb6k4I) (another aspect of the myth Billy the kid itself: the infamous daguerrotype in question has reality preserved in reverse) to Kristofferson's avenger (https://youtu.be/a-e47wAkg9g). But with Peckinpah's film you get bonus James Coburn, Slim Pickens, Harry Dean Stanton, and even Rita Coolidge. Bobbie Gentry [47:55] "Billy the Kid" Patchwork Capitol Records ST-494 1971 Speaking of coincidences. From Bobbie's final studio album. Definitely environmental circumstances. The Modern Jazz Quartet [49:57] "A Social Call" Patterns United Artists Records UAL 4072 1960 And now for something completely different from Billy the Kid. Music derived from film cues. The Alphabet Escapades of Letter P is a story that letter P tells as he witnesses a real adventure where two aerial friends help out their terrestrial friend. iFree activity sheets and other downloadable resources available at www.rituvaish.com/alphabet-escapades-of-letter-pSend your artwork to rituvaish@gmail.com.TranscriptLetter P was extremely adventurous and on one such adventure, he witnesses the friendship of three friends. This is the story letter P told:Once there were three friends: a parrot, a pigeon, and a pig.Pig lived in the small patch of muddy water and beside this muddy patch on the right was a big palm tree where lived a pigeon and to the left was a big banyan tree which was the home to a parrot.Every day morning after wishing each other good morning, the two birds would fly away to the fields in search of food.Children, what do you think the pig did while the birds flew away in the morning?Yes! That's right. The pig would roll around in the mud. In the evening, all the three friends would talk about their day and wish each other good night and go to their homes. It was the pig's deep desire to be able to fly. Every day as the pigeon and the parrot flew away in search of food, the pig would think, “ Oh! How wonderful it would be to be able to fly.”Finally, one day the pig said sadly to his two friends, “ You are so lucky to be able to fly. I wish I could fly too and enjoy with you both looking at the earth from far above.”The parrot and the pigeon were sad that their good friend couldn't fly and wanted to somehow help their friend fly. Children, can you think of some way that the pig can fly?Ummm.. alright, listen ahead to find out. “We could both carry him," called out the pigeon.“I wish we could, but the pig is way too heavy for us,” said the parrot sadly. As they were discussing various ways to carry the pig, the parrot exclaimed, “I know what to do.” Children, any guesses as to what was on the parrot's mind?Listen ahead. He muttered something in the pigeon's ears, which brought an instant smile on the pigeon's face. They were both excited and wished each other and the pig good night, then they went to their respective trees. The next morning, both the pigeon and the parrot went to the city nearby. They went to the shop that sold parachutes and explained their friend's desire to the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper was excited as he imagined a pig flying and gave one parachute to the two birds. Parrot and pigeon thanked the shopkeeper and together took the parachute to the peak of a nearby mountain. Then they rushed to the pig and asked him to reach the peak of the mountain for a big surprise.Once the pig reached the peak of the mountain, the two birds explained their plan. The parrot exclaimed, “ We are going to tie the parachute to your body, then you  can run off the mountain and enjoy flying like the birds!”“Oink! Oink! Let's do it!” oinked the pig smiling from ear to ear.Carefully the two birds tied the parachute“5-3-3-2-l..run! Run pig run and jump!' called out the two birds waving their wings. As for the pig, he ran and jumped off the mountain.Lo and behold, he was flying.Children, what all did he see as he flew?Great! He was excited to see the treetops, the rivers, and also his two bird friends who were flying with him.And as he was still enjoying, the parachute came down, and down came the pig with a big thud and landed in a pumpkin patch. The parrot and pigeon also flew down. The three friends clapped and gave high-fives to each other.“I am a pig! I am a flying pig! Yey, yey, yey!” oinked the pig.“He is a pig! He's a flying pig! Yey, yey, yey!” cooed the pigeon.“He is a pig! He's a flying pig! Yey, yey, yey!” squawked the parrot. And they all did a jig.“Thanks a lot, friends. If it hadn't been for you, I would have never experienced flying!” said the pig with a big grin and a sparkle in his eyes.“You are very welcome Let's meet at home dear pig!” said the birds as they flew away. The pig rolled a small pumpkin all the way home to treat his bird friend. Children, isn't that a nice way to say thanks? That night all that the friends talked about was flying. And the birds enjoyed the pumpkin. Now, whenever the pig wants to fly, they all to the peak of the mountain and tie the parachute to the pig's body and off he goes flying. Hello Children! I am alphabet P. Hope you liked the story. You know I make the sound: /p/ Let's see what all words in the story started with the sound /p/.Remember the names of the three friends?/p/ pig/p/pigeon/p/parrotThe pigeon lived on a/p/ palm treeNow, what did the parrot and pigeon get from the shop?/p/ parachuteAnd where did the birds' asked the pig to meet/p/ peak of the mountainThe pig landed on a /p/ pumpkin /p/ patch.
