How are American Christians thinking about engaging non-Christians in the United States? According to recent Barna research there are 60 to 80 million Americans who don't fit the paradigm that a lot of Christians have about those outside of the church. Both Bob and Doug were youth pastors, Doug was obviously better than Bob, but I digress. This episode Bob and Doug talk with youth ministry legend Tic Long who has seen the scope from the early years of youth ministry being a thing until now. It has the feel of a PBS documentary that could be next Ken Burns project. Tic Long has spent most of his adult life in youth ministry and leadership. He worked at Youth Specialties for 34 years. Most of those years he spent leading the National Youth Workers Convention, which he loved and poured his heart and soul into. Speaking of soul, Tic also had a killer soul patch. We hope you enjoy this conversation with Tic Long. We'd love to hear from you. Drop us a line. Mark Matlock is a seasoned non-profit leader, the founder of WisdomWorks, and previous president of Youth Specialties. His most recent is called Faith for Exiles: Five Ways for a New Generation to Follow Jesus in Digital Babylon. He is also currently working on Emotionally Healthy Discipleship for teens with Pete Scazzero and a new book for Barna. Take a few minutes to meditate on Exodus 7:8-13 and then listen in to hear where God led Mark. Some highlights from our conversation: Mark used to make a living as a magician, so he lends some interesting insight into what might have been happening when the work of God was mimicked by Pharaoh's sorcerers. We also discuss how our efforts can produce “fruit” that appears real and good but may not endure if we aren't relying on God. Mark shares about his book, Faith for Exiles, and helps us learn what we can do to help disciple the next generation. You can find Mark at https://markmatlock.com/ You can find Mark's newest book here Follow Mark on Instagram: @markmatlock On Facebook: MarkMatlock On Twitter @MarkMatlock The exact verses read in this podcast are Exodus 7:8-13 8 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9 “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Perform a miracle,' then say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,' and it will become a snake.” 10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. 11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet Pharaoh's heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.
July Podcast Recap Week 3: What books have helped me the most in my parenting? Besides *How We Love Our Kids by Milan and Kay Yerkovich which was the episode last week, I would say, *Understanding Your Young Teen by Mark Oestreicher. Oh this book changed how I parented! It just gave me a lens into my kids' lives and help me have empathy and understanding. Now one of my favorite things when I go and speak to MOPS groups and other parents is to remind them that one of the most important gifts they can give their kids is empathy, putting ourselves in their shoes and understanding. I believe this book is what started me on that path. Cannot wait for you to hear the episode I recorded with Marko back in December 2019. Are you parenting a teenager? Do you have a child between the ages of 11-14 which we call a young teen? I am excited for you to hear my conversation with veteran youth worker, Marko about parenting teenagers. His book, *Understanding Your Young Teen, is one of my favorite parenting books and truly helped me understand my boys (ages almost 17 and 13). He goes into detail about the 5 major changes our teens will go through: physical, cognitive, emotional, relational, and spiritual and gives great insight. If you have a young teen (ages 11-14) or an older teen, I promise you do not want to miss this episode. His words of wisdom are gold! Brock Morgan is the reason we are here. Well, not quite. But almost. Back when we were just starting out as podcasters in January of 2018, we reached out to Brock for an interview. He had just released his book, Youth Ministry 2027, and when we found out he lived not far from us, we thought talking to him would be a great way to build our audience. He didn't know us from Adam, but he was very accommodating and agreed to sit down with us. It was the beginning of a friendship, and maybe even the beginning of the Sherpas. Two years later, we are excited to release our latest conversation with Brock as part of our Sherpa Legends series. Brock has served on the speaking team of Youth Specialties and is a frequent author for the Youth Cartel. He speaks at youth conferences, parent events and youth leader training workshops around the country. He has served at influential churches on both coasts. And he is the son of Christian hippies. No lie. He grew up on the road with parents who were part of a Jesus Movement rock band in the 70s and played for Billy Graham Crusades. Those experiences deeply shaped his theology of youth ministry, his view of students as revolutionaries, and his thoughtful approach to following Jesus. He both informs and inspires us. And we just love hanging out with him. His parent's band was pretty rad, too! Enjoy our conversation with this legend of youth ministry, Brock Morgan. Greg Stier is one of the most important voices in youth ministry. His passionate call to keep evangelism at the forefront of all we do has inspired an entire generation of youth pastors and students to share their faith with courage. Greg is the founder and former president of Dare 2 Share Ministries. Raised in a violent, inner-city family in Denver, Colorado, he never knew his father. A local pastor named "Yankee" led Greg and his entire family to Christ. That ignited a passion in Greg to see all lost people come to know Jesus. Following college, he became a pastor and founded Dare 2 Share ministries. Deeply impacted by the Columbine shooting in 1999, Greg took the ministry full-time and has never looked back. Greg has spoken to more than a million teenagers through the Dare 2 Share conferences. He's the author of Gospelize and numerous resources for leaders and students. A few years ago, Greg and his team created Dare 2 Share Live, taking the principles of healthy evangelistic youth ministries to thousands of churches around the country via simulcast. The next event is 10/10/20. Greg is a frequent speaker at Youth Specialties and a die-hard defender of youth pastors and youth ministry. You cannot talk to Greg Stier and go away unchanged and unchallenged. We hope you enjoy our conversation with the legendary Greg Stier. https://www.dare2share.org/https://dare2sharelive.org/https://lifein6words.com/app/

Great coaches have what's called a "Coaching Tree." It's the legacy of former assistants who have gone on to great things in their own right. The longer they coach, the farther and wider those branches stretch. No youth pastor has a deeper, wider, and more influential tree than Dr. Jim Burns. Jim Burns has been involved in youth ministry since the time he was saved at 16. He even turned down a baseball scholarship to Stanford in order to study for the ministry at then little-known Azusa Pacific University. He led a growing youth ministry in California, where he mentored a high school kid named Doug Fields. Jim became a key part of the Youth Specialties speaking team, working closely with the legendary Mike Yaconelli and Wayne Rice. He has written resources which now have more than 2 million copies in print. He eventually turned his rich wisdom towards parents, and became the President of HomeWord and the Executive Director of the HomeWord Center for Youth and Family at Azusa Pacific. He and his wife Cathy still speak regularly at parenting and marriage events around the country, and are the proud parents of three grown daughters and proud grandparents of James and Charlotte. Even with his many achievements and rich legacy, Jim still gets teary-eyed thinking about the students who didn't get it. It's a quality that makes him a great youth pastor. We know you will enjoy our conversation with the gracious and wise Dr. Jim Burns.

When we’ve been hurt, when we’ve been battered, sometimes anger and bitterness give us a sense of control. But the truth is, our bitterness and anger often control us. They keep our perpetrators close at hand, keep the wrongs they’ve done to us in the front of our minds... When we think about legendary youth speakers, Duffy Robbins is one of the first people to come to mind. He has been challenging, inspiring, and entertaining students for over 40 years. His warm style and quick wit has influenced many generations of students and youth workers. In addition to being a sought-after conference speaker, Duffy served for many years as Professor of Youth Ministries at Eastern University near Philadelphia, as well as a key member of the Youth Specialties speaking team. Recently, he and Maggie moved to the western part of Pennsylvania to take a similar position at Grove City College (Steve's Alma Mater). Following the raising of their two daughters, Maggie pursued her passion by becoming a Spiritual Director, and each year brings her special gift to the Youth Specialties Conference. Despite some confusion during the interview, we were able to determine they've been married for 46 years! For the official resume, Duffy has his D.Min. in Youth and Family Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary, and is the author of numerous books including Ministry of Nurture, This Way to Youth Ministry: An Introduction to the Adventure, Speaking to Teenagers (which he co-wrote with Doug Fields), Youth Ministry Nuts and Bolts and Enjoy the Silence (which he co-wrote with Maggie). Duffy also teaches in the D-Min program at Gordon-Conwell Seminary and serves as associate staff member with the Center for Parent-Youth Understanding (CPYU). We were blessed to spend time with Duffy and Maggie for a live session at the National Youth Workers Convention in Tampa. Our time was short, but rich. We can't wait to talk to them again.

Some people might be considered "the face" of youth ministry. Mark Oestreicher is "the beard" of youth ministry. Marko, as he is known, has been a thought leader in youth ministry for nearly three decades. From his early days as an advocate for the value and legitimacy of middle-school ministry, to his authorship of influential books, to his stint as president of Youth Specialties, to his founding of the Youth Cartel, Marko has been a leading voice for youth ministry innovation, cultural interpretation and practical training. Somewhere along the way, Marko gained a reputation as the visionary Yoda of youth ministry, developing the next generation of cutting edge leaders while challenging the church to constantly re-think its methods and purposes. He has led over 50 intensive training cohorts for youth pastors around the country. Recently, he was part of Download Youth Ministry's National Day of Volunteer Youth Ministry Training, and our volunteers are still talking about his session on the teenage brain. Strip away the beard and all the accomplishments, though, and Marko is still a middle-school youth pastor at heart. He loves kids, and wants them to love Jesus. We loved our conversation, and could almost smell the smoke of his cigar as we chatted. We are sure you will be blessed by the wit and wisdom of this legend, Mark Oestreicher.

If you had to create a youth ministry legend from scratch, what ingredients would you include? Great beard? Check. Deep thinker? Check. Boundless love of students? Check. Great "getting fired" story? Check. Mark Ostreicher checks all the boxes of Youth Ministry Legend. He's the former president of Youth Specialties, founder of the Youth Cartel, a brilliant thinker, and a gadfly who challenges the status quo wherever he goes. The youth ministry world would not be where it is today without him. Here's a sneak peak of our conversation with Mark Ostreicher.

Our Fourth Legend -- Walt Mueller It was 1989. The internet wasn't invented yet. George HW Bush was president. The Berlin Wall came down. The Cosby Show, Rosanne, and Cheers held the top spots on TV. Madonna, Phil Collins, and the Bangles topped the charts. Morgan Freeman was Driving Miss Daisy. And a little-known youth pastor from Pennsylvania got a crazy idea to start a resource ministry to help youth workers and parents navigate the travails of youth culture. That was Walt Mueller, and his brainchild was the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding (CPYU). For the past 30 years--through books, podcasts, workshops, speaking engagements and tons and tons of online resources--CPYU has been a key player in the youth ministry world. For many veteran youth workers, Walt and his team at CPYU have been like a soundtrack to a life in youth ministry. During our talk with Walt, we learned about his call to begin CPYU, the spiritual challenges of being a researcher into an often discouraging and even depressing youth culture, and his heart to bring solid theological and practical help to today's youth workers. We also heard some great stories from Youth Specialties conventions of the past, including a near-sparring episode that ensued one year during a panel discussion on rock music. Through it all, Walt has remained relevant, faithful, and available to all of us, and for that we are thankful. Our Fourth Legend -- Walt MuellerIt was 1989. Through it all, Walt has remained relevant, faithful, and available to all of us, and for that we are thankful.Walt Mueller is the founder and President of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding and has been working with young people and families for over 35 years. Ladies and Gentlemen, by the time you read this, both hosts of the Youth Ministry Sherpas Podcast will be (gasp!) IN THEIR 50s! Steve has been doing the senior adult swim for a few years already, but Mathew is just getting into the pool, turning 50 on November 1. And guess what? We're not dead yet! We might even have some gas left in the tank. It sure smells like it. Anyway, the years sure have flown by. Seems like just yesterday we were celebrating Mathew's 40th birthday at a hotel in Pittsburgh during a Youth Specialties conference. Steve bought the margaritas; Mathew dissolved into a puddle of tears. It has been a good ride, my friend. But that's a story for another episode. Anyway, it's amazing to look back and see how we've grown through each decade--from destroying kids in dodgeball and seeking legitimacy in our 20s, to pioneering and building healthy programs in our 30s, to hitting our stride and becoming more intentional in our 40s, to entering the "sage stage" in our 50s. It has been quite a journey, and our story is still being written (along with the prescription for that prostate medication). We thought we'd use the occasion of Mathew's 50th birthday to reflect on what youth ministry was like through each decade of our lives. What did we learn? Where did we grow? What were the struggles and the joys of each stage? We share it all -- at least what we can remember. What was this episode about again? We hope you will hang in there long enough to make it to your 4th decade of youth ministry. Who knows; maybe there will even be a 5th? That's what the Youth Ministry Sherpas podcast is all about! Episode 32--Hitting the 4th Decade (holy cow, we're old)! In honor of #32: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHIXFKrrUhA
