As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, Winchester's Jim Barnett Park becomes a hub of activity, welcoming families and residents from across the region. In this episode of “The Valley Today,” host Janet Michael sat down with Chris Konyar, Winchester City Parks Director, to explore the vibrant lineup of fall and winter events, new amenities, and the enduring community spirit that defines the city's Parks and Recreation Department. A Season of Festivities The conversation kicks off with a preview of the much-anticipated Spooky Fun event, a Halloween celebration that has quickly become a local favorite. Scheduled for October 17th, the event transforms the Parks and Rec Center into a festive wonderland, complete with trick-or-treating, a “touch a truck” experience featuring fire engines and police cars, music, costumes, and the ever-popular “boo bundle” s'mores by the fire pit. This year, a new Spooky Trolley Trail adds to the excitement, offering families a guided tour through creatively decorated scenes in the park. The fun doesn't stop there. The following Friday, October 24th, brings the Boo Bounce Bash, where the gym is filled with giant inflatables, games, and refreshments. “If you want to wear out your child and guarantee a good night's sleep, this is the event for you,” Chris jokes, noting that the event's popularity keeps families coming back year after year. Kicking Off the Holidays No sooner does Halloween wrap up than the city gears up for its annual Christmas parade, traditionally held the Monday after Thanksgiving. Janet and Chris discuss the logistics and traditions behind the parade, from the limited number of entries to the grand finale tree lighting in Old Town Winchester. The parade, which draws crowds from across the area, is a cherished kickoff to the holiday season, complete with Santa Claus and dazzling decorations. Programs for All Ages Beyond seasonal events, Winchester Parks & Rec offers a robust slate of ongoing programs. “Wee Ones Wednesday” provides preschoolers with a safe, active space to play, socialize, and participate in crafts and story time. The program's popularity has led to expanded sessions, ensuring more families can take part. Youth sports are another cornerstone, with basketball leagues for children ages five to fourteen and swim lessons in the indoor pool. Chris emphasizes the importance of early participation, not just for skill-building but for fostering teamwork and confidence. The department's inclusive approach means that both city residents and non-residents are welcome, with only minor differences in program fees. New Amenities and Improvements The conversation also highlights recent upgrades and additions to the park. A state-of-the-art golf simulator now allows golfers to practice and play virtual rounds year-round, regardless of weather. The park has also seen infrastructure improvements, including new restrooms, fencing, and dugouts at the Handley softball field, as well as enhanced lighting for safety and evening events. A Regional Destination Janet and Chris are quick to point out that Jim Barnett Park is more than just a city park—it's a regional destination. With amenities like the indoor pool, diverse programming, and a welcoming atmosphere, the park attracts visitors from neighboring counties and even West Virginia. The department's monthly newsletter keeps the community informed about upcoming events, registration deadlines, and new offerings. Building Community, One Event at a Time Throughout the conversation, a common theme emerges: Winchester Parks & Rec is dedicated to building community and creating lasting memories for families. Whether it's through festive events, youth programs, or new facilities, the department's efforts ensure that everyone—regardless of age or background—can find something to enjoy. As the episode wraps up, Janet thanks Chris for his time and enthusiasm, eager to check out the new golf simulator herself. With a full calendar of activities and a commitment to continuous improvement, Winchester's parks are poised to remain a beloved gathering place for years to come.

This week on CP, we kick off ARTOBER. Host Ben Futa is talking all things Wild By Design, the Art of Planting. He's in conversation with Ben O'Brien of Wild By Design, who creates "artfully crafted, richly planted, lovingly tended gardens". Based in Ontario, Ben O'Brien believes that the best gardens captivate, delight, and deeply resonate with people; they respond to, reveal, and amplify the magic of a place; and they are those born from a genuine love of plants. This week's horoscope forecast begins with Monday's Moon in Capricorn, a placement that feels heavy, stripped of softness, and extra intense since Monday is ruled by the Moon. If you missed the planetary days episode, you can find that by clicking here: Planetary Days!Tuesday brings a rare lesson in cooperation when the Moon in Capricorn forms a trine to Venus in Virgo. Neither planet is strong alone, but together even the most “weakened” energies can create harmony and flow when circumstances demand teamwork. On Wednesday, October begins with a powerful Mercury in Libra square Jupiter in Cancer sitting at the high-stakes 22nd degrees. Known as the “kill or be killed degree,” 22° is less about danger and more about decisive transformation and in this case, choosing a type of self restraint. This square sets the tone for the month, a decision between Mercury's power restraint and Jupiter's ritual like discipline. Expect crunch moments where decisions must be made that are not for balance, but for growth.By week's end, airy trines between the Aquarius Moon, Libra Sun, and Libra Mercury bring relief, social ease, and clearer conversations. Tune in for the full weekly astrology breakdown, with each horoscope timestamped below for your convenience.Astrology Readings Menu

Climate Week NYC 2025 is under way, and we're kicking off our special podcast coverage speaking to Peter Bakker, CEO of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. WBCSD is a global network of more than 250 companies focused on integrating climate, nature and equity action into corporate strategies, operating plans and decision-making. WBCSD is celebrating its 30th anniversary at Climate Week NYC in 2025, at a time when many US companies are reevaluating their approach to sustainability. "Clearly in North America at the moment, the conversation has to be an economic conversation: What is the business case? Why do investments in this space make sense?" Peter says. These discussions very look different in other parts of the world, and Peter says the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties known as COP30 will be the "true test" of whether multilateralism can help advance global climate solutions, or whether the world takes an increasingly fragmented, regional approach. Regardless, he says corporate boards need to understand the physical risks in their supply chains and pursue both adaptation and mitigation strategies. "This is not a midcentury issue — this is in the next five to 10 years," Peter says. "That will lead to much more focus on resilience and adaptation. However, the reality is there is no adaptation plan for a 3-degree world ... That means it remains of the highest priority to continue to put pressure on emission reductions." We'll be back with podcast interviews from Climate Week NYC throughout the week — including our coverage from The Nest Climate Campus, where the All Things Sustainable podcast is an official media partner. NFL The season has kicked off, they went to Brazil and the Chiefs lost to the chargers, Aaron Rodgers had an okay first game but they need to protect the old man if they want him to make the ravens look great on defense and offense and Ty Johnson had a great game in Buffalo. It should shake out to be an interesting season. MLB Playoffs The O's look terrible this year, it was off but they had a glimpse of greatness in the 9th inning against the dodgers. They are still building something, and they most likely will be in for a long season next year. News and Politics Charlie Kirk I did not know who he was until yesterday, so this is what I know. White Male, Shot and Killed in Utah he was 31 married with two kids. He was talking on a Utah college campus, he was a right wing republican whose narrative was divisive. He was not a political candidate but a pundit, who had a right wing conservative following. His messaging especially on gun control is and I quote "We must also be real. We must be honest with the population. Having an armed citizenry comes with a price, and that is part of liberty...I think it's worth having a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights." In the simplest of analogies he believed that you had to break some eggs to make an omelet, and unfortunately he was one of the eggs. I want to discuss that his life ceases to exist, but for those who were there at the event, have to live with that the rest of their lives and those who now have watched it also carry that burden. It is very widespread online and if you or people you know do not want to see it, turn off auto play on your applications that you view most to avoid seeing something you do not want to see. Here is how to do that It is not normal to watch someone be killed and if you are experiencing trauma around this please seek help and talk with someone.

On this special New York Fashion Week edition of the Glossy Podcast, we're kicking off our Fashion Month coverage. New York Fashion Week has officially started, and the shows are underway. On this episode, senior fashion reporter Danny Parisi, international reporter Zofia Zwieglinska and editor-in-chief Jill Manoff give a preview of what they'll be looking for during the week, what shows are the most notable, and what New York Fashion Week's identity is now that many mainstay brands have moved their shows to Europe. First, we break down how the shows themselves are differing. The CFDA, along with a new organization called KFN, is experimenting with a new format this season, with 30 designers over the course of the week showing in a few centralized locations in lower Manhattan. The move is an effort to rein in the geographic sprawl that has affected New York Fashion Week over the last few years. While in previous decades, shows were centralized in places like Bryant Park or Spring Studios, recent years have seen shows continue to spread out across the city. Whether the move will be a success remains a question mark. But one thing that's certain is that brands are looking for ways to cut costs this season. Several shows this week are held at the brand's own stores, office or headquarters. We also discuss some notable shows this week, including Ralph Lauren, Tibi and Christian Siriano, which is showing at Macy's, plus the return of the Rachel Antonoff x Susan Alexandra dog show. And lastly, we talk about New York's place in the global fashion landscape. While many of the big brands, including American brands, have moved their shows to Paris or Milan, New York Fashion Week has slowly morphed into a great showcase for indie and advanced contemporary brands.
In this episode, I get back in the field and share what it's like running Jobber from a technician's perspective. From scheduling to staying organized on the go, I break down how the software works in real-time. Plus, I give an update on our first day of aeration and seeding—what's working, what challenges popped up, and how we're setting the tone for a successful aeration season.

One click and the social media algorithm starts to study you. It begins suggesting things it thinks you'd like. It starts pushing you in new directions. It's trying to serve you, but also trap you. In this episode of the All Pro Dad Podcast, host Ted Lowe is joined by BJ Foster and Bobby Lewis to talk about that pesky social media algorithm and how to make it work FOR you, not against you as a dad. Why This MattersAlgorithms try to keep your attention and steal your time away from what matters most. Define ItThe social media algorithm is the behind-the-scenes brain that sorts through all the noise and tries to deliver a personalized feed of content it thinks you'll like.Things Social Media Algorithms DoExplore your potential interests: They analyze popular trends and feeds them to you in an attempt to broaden your horizons.Move you beyond your immediate network: By suggesting posts from accounts you don't follow, platforms help content “go viral."Steer you toward high-engagement content: If a post is getting a lot of likes, shares, and comments in a short amount of time, the visibility gets boosted to a wider audience. How To Train Your Algorithm1. Engage authentically.Only like, share, and comment on content you genuinely care about.2. Follow intentionally.Be mindful of who you follow, because algorithms assume you like similar things. 3. Explore mindfully.Using ‘Explore' or ‘For You' search aids collects data about your interests. 4. Watch the clock. The longer you spend viewing content, the more social media algorithms assume you're interested. Don't linger.5. Use platform features.Block, mute, or hit ‘not interested' to refine your online experience.Important Episode Timestamps00:00 – 00:21 | Kicking Off the Conversation00:21 – 02:20 | Instagram and Pornography02:20 – 05:23 | What Are Algorithms Really Doing?05:23 – 07:45 | Algorithms Get Smarter Every Year07:45 – 09:35 | Screen Time by Generation09:35 – 11:13 | Problems with Social Media Algorithms11:13 – 14:40 | Personal Reflections on Algorithm Impact14:40 – 19:13 | Training the Algorithm to Work for You19:13 – 23:59 | Boundaries, Self-Discipline, and Accountability24:00 – End | Pro MWe love feedback, but can't reply without your email address. SummaryIn this episode, Chase and Chris have a real and honest talk about why making changes in your life—like starting a health or fitness journey—can be so hard. They share stories from their own lives and from their clients. They talk about how it's okay to mess up, how you're going to face tough moments, and how your old habits (or "old identity") can try to pull you back. But they also talk about how you can win those battles by getting support, learning new tools, and doing hard things even when it's uncomfortable.Chapters(00:00) Kicking Off a Real Conversation on Change(01:18) Why Change is Hard: It's Not Just About Being Busy(03:39) The Battle Between Your Old and New Identity(04:45) Losing Battles Doesn't Mean Losing the War(07:12) Life Will Always Happen—Don't Let It Be Your Excuse(09:11) The Invisible Ceiling: Fears of Success and Self-Sabotage(12:33) Breaking Through Self-Limiting Beliefs(13:03) Chase Gets Real: His Own Identity Shifts and Struggles(15:44) Coaches Who Call You Out (Because They Care)(18:04) You Become Who You're Around(21:43) Loving the Idea of Change vs. Doing the Work(24:02) Hiking the Hard Road: Why the Hard Way Feels Better(28:28) Wanting Results Without the Work?
