Long-time listeners to Sustainability Now! know that we periodically turn to a focus on plastic, whose production is predicted to skyrocket over the next few decades, as fossil fuel companies look for ways to sell their product. Plastics are not forever, although they last a long time in the environment and are piling up across the world's lands and oceans. Even notionally “compostable” plastics require special handling if they are to be returned to their constituent components, and most of these plastics are not handled specially. If you could make a better plastic—one that would decompose into biological carbon in your backyard compost pile—wouldn't the world beat a path to your door? Maybe not. Join SN! host Ronnie Lipschutz and Raegan Kelly, Head of Product and Sustainability Lead at Better for All, for a conversation about composting plastics. Better for all is trying to widen use of PHBH, a biologically based plastic that breaks down with minimal treatment in your back yard. We are going to talk about why it is so difficult to get the manufacturers of plastic and plastic products to use PHBH and what Better for All is trying to do about that.

We've heard about sound healing with Tibetan bowls, tuning forks, and Chakra bowls, but today we are discussing the power of New Age music when listened to intentionally with producer and artist David Vito Gregoli. And you will hear here, some of Vito's soundbites from his latest work. What is New Age music? It's a tremendously large sector of music often used in yoga classes, massage and spas, but the unique quality of New Age is that it speaks to your heart and brings you to a state of internal awareness. This is music that doesn't tell you how to feel, but allows you to feel what you feel. Many people think New Age is limiting to those who only practice alternative therapies or traditions, but this is a new kind of love song. World influence, chanting, ambient, flowing, dramatic and healing would be words that come to mind in describing this beautiful genre.Vito's musical journey began in Pop, Rock and Blues. By the time he was in his teens, he was already hailed as a guitar virtuoso and working regularly in the L.A. club scene. He later studied classical music and received a Bachelors in Music from CSUN. Vito's latest release is with 2x Grammy winner and environmentalist Ricky Kej. “Wild Monsoon” drops in June 2022. It's a eclectic blend of World Beat and New Age.Ricky and Vito paired last on Vito's “Om Land” album.Vito brings integrity and unique artistry to music that defies pigeon-holes. "I have the ability to hear something in everything I can see round the bend when someone plays me an idea. That inspires me in the job of Producer." For more of Vito's work, go here. Computers, artificial intelligence, and machine learning carry reputations as great equalizers free of human error and false judgement, yet these devices require inputs from humans to function and therefore reflect the prejudices of their programmers, Scholars such as Kathleen herself and the American sociologist Ruha Benjamin explain this phenomenon in their writing and organizing. Here Kathleen details the dynamics of a design world dominated by a select group of elites, the promise of decentralized AI in creating a more equitable tech sector, and the importance of people around the world creating and expressing themselves in their languages. Computers have taken over the world as one of my old high school teachers once said. Indeed this here podcast wouldn't be possible without them. And we become more conscious of their role in our lives as the group of new technologies collectively sitting under the “digital” label pull greater scrutiny of their impact on our everyday interactions. We in North America and Europe talk about these effects of social media flexing on suburban white kids and our coworkers at the water cooler, but we don't talk about the effects on kids in middle and lower-income countries. The author Amitav Ghosh wrote of Syrian refugee children who believed they'd be safe in rickety boats crossing the Mediterranean so long as their phones were charged. On a macro level, the digital space has set new stages for economic development, especially on the African continent which has served as a laboratory for global development policies for decades. Computerization, and our guest's specialty machine learning, will play pivotal roles in the next century of societal change across Africa, and questions of whom that technology serves and who owns the digital space will be pivotal in ensuring equitable access. Joining George Collins on WorldBeat is Kathleen Siminyu. Ms. Siminyu is an AI Researcher who focuses on Natural Language Processing for African Languages. She works at The Mozilla Foundation as a Machine Learning Fellow and prior to that was the Regional Coordinator of AI4D Africa. She has vast experience as a community organizer having co-organised the Nairobi Women in Machine Learning and Data Science community for three years. Intro/outro music by Batata K1ng
European politics constituted a small blip on the radar for Americans in the late 20th century. National elections and popular referendums got five minutes of fame stateside before vanishing into Wikipedia lists. The 2016 Brexit vote forced Americans beyond the political class to recognize that events across the pond can cause worldwide blowback, and a new consciousness of the happenings around the world emerged in the years since the United Kingdom's historic decision. But six years isn't much time to become acquainted with another country's political nuances, especially when so much analysis of political maneuvers abroad are framed through an American lens in corporate media. Today we gain an inside look at U.K. politics from someone who's lived and acted in both the American and British scenes. National secretary for SNP Socialists and the women's officer for the Aberdeen Independence Movement Kat Carey joins WorldBeat to discuss her time growing up on a farm in Wisconsin, her experiences in the armed forces, and the factors leading to her family's relocation across the Atlantic. She holds an MSc in International and European Politics from the University of Edinburgh and co-hosts the Talking Sense podcast.
COVID-19 stalled efforts to campaign for a new Scottish independence vote, but the dream hasn't died. Voters may not think of the European Union when they cast the ballot, but the organization plays a pivotal role in Scotland's future. Kat argues EU membership is the best conduit to avoid becoming a client state of the United States, China, or any other world power. Part 1 of WorldBeat with guest Javoen Byrd . A new generation of black American activism has emerged in the last ten years as movements like Black Lives Matter broke into the public discourse. These causes have brought wider attention to such issues of police corruption and discrimination in housing. But beyond the political realm, many black Americans are also digging into their history and finding a new sense of pride in their heritage, and one area of growing enthusiasm is in reclaiming spiritual practices from the Continent. Some of these folks felt particularly drawn to the community and healing aspects of such beliefs as the COVID-19 pandemic threw the whole world into the meat grinder. Porsche Little, a Brooklyn-based artist, diviner, and aborisha told Vox that she has received a huge increase in requests for divinations and readings throughout the pandemic. Beyond the personal fulfillment of these explorations, could embracing African spiritual practices hold value in the liberation struggles of black Americans? How does this rising enthusiasm for these beliefs intersect with the explosion of anti-racist activism in black communities of the past decade? Ethnomusicologist and the founder of The Hawk Foundation for Research and Education in African & African American Culture Javoen Byrd sits down with George on this episode of WorldBeat. Part 1 details Javoen's early forays into music, his love of the drum, and how he came to be an initiated Isese practitioner as well as the history of African spiritual practices in slave resistance, the Haitian revolution, and how the stigma against such traditions carries forward into today both among African-Americans and populations still on the African continent. Part 2 of the Javoen Byrd interview Both the Hawk Foundation and Awodi Drumming push multicultural education as a means of empowerment and Javoen has transformed the lives of black American schoolchildren, prisoners, and others as they learn about their heritage and find a new lease on life. He details some of these stories and discusses the role black women can play in this effort to reclaim black American self-determination, how to meet people where they are in education, the limits of some of the lefts tactics, and how sharing the truth changes minds more effectively than browbeating from the ivory tower.

SHINING THE LIGHT ON SPECIAL GUEST: Anthony Russell: Psychic Medium, Expert Tarot Card Reader, Show Host and a true LightMystic! Mayume and Manjeet had such an amazing time with this guy and can't wait for you, Lightworker Listeners, to connect with him in any way you can. He's the real deal... a Native with a natural born gift of psychic mediumship as well as the gift of gab -- and so much more. The ladies could not get enough of him! You must listen all the way to the end as he pulls a card spread for both M&M! About Anthony Russell: Anthony Russell embodies the romantic vision of a psychic from New York city – sophisticated, well-traveled, articulate, and a master of several mystery traditions reflecting the melting pot of his locale. He is well-known as a highly sought-after reader – and also as the owner of the former “Zodiac Lounge.” Anthony discovered the Tarot when he was 9 years old. “I was drawn to the cards from across the room,” he says. “I was fascinated by the colors and the composition – when I got closer to them, they almost appeared to be moving– they were very fluid to my vision.” Anthony read Tarot as a way to support himself through his university degree and his post-graduate degree. He then left the occult world to pursue a career in music. He began by writing Pop and R&B, eventually transitioning into World Beat, where he was able to travel the world and learn the sacred music of many cultures thus bringing sacred energy to the dance floors. After he closed the Zodiac Lounge, Anthony focused on his readings and pursued an advanced degree in clinical psychology at age 61; not to open a practice – but to give better counsel in his readings. Anthony has been a natural medium since childhood and says that he often gets “disincarnate beings," often a relative, who joins in on his psychic readings in order to give advice to his clients. “I liken my role to that of a multi-lingual bike messenger,” he says. “I have a document for you in a language few are fluent in. It is my job to interpret it for you. My cards are my Rosetta Stone, and they're always on the money.” Anthony can be found at www.anthonycentral.com Subscribe, Rate and Review! How do we restore trust in healthcare amidst a pandemic and culture that has, rightly or wrongly, demonized public health institutions? Myles shoots on the importance of transparency in healthcare towards rebuilding that rapport and how changing incentives in the system to focus on preventative and community health can achieve better outcomes. Much coverage of U.S. healthcare workers during the Covid-19 outbreak paints a doom and gloom picture of burnout, high turnover, and failing systems. While there may be truth to these narratives, Myles explains the experience can be more nuanced than is presented. He shoots on the role of leadership in creating a lower pressure environment, the ways to create that effective leadership, and the pressures middle managers are subjected to that remain hidden from many outside accounts. (1/3) Almost two years into the COVID-19 pandemic and Americans can't seem to catch a break as new variants emerge and policy debates over lockdowns, school closures, and vaccine mandates dominate coverage. It's pretty daunting for folks on the outside as we struggle to keep up with the breakneck pace of change, but what about the folks on the inside? Popular coverage of healthcare workers has been as hot and cold as leftover lasagna. From being hailed as essential workers and heroes to being demonized as liars and pill pushers and everything in between, it's important to remember that these people are human. They have thoughts, feelings, and emotional responses to the crisis just like the rest of us, and today we'll highlight one such worker's experience in the field and the strategies being implemented to provide quality care both for their patients, and themselves. Ungagged presents the second part of Worldbeat with George Collins' interview with Ungagged founder Neil Scott. Neil speaks of the Independence Referendum of 2011-2014, what happened subsequently to what is now known as the "Yes Movement," and what comes next...

This episode is dedicated with love to the memory of our dear friend Dennis Gordon. Dennis was the big booming voice on our show “bumpers” that would begin and end each chapter of Rock N Roll Archaeology. Thank you Dennis, we miss you. May the Four Winds blow you safely home. Welcome back to the second half of our big chapter telling the big story of a big year in Rock. If you haven't done so already, we highly recommend you listen to Episode 18 before you delve into this one! We tell the story of 1969 by telling the story of four concerts: The Beatles on the Roof, The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park was the first part. Part Two will take us to the peak, to the apotheosis of Woodstock...and to the abyss at Altamont. And we'll go to some other places in between too. 1969 is the year Rock N Roll goes global, and we'll get into that a little, and set up later discussions of great topics like Rock behind the Iron Curtain and the growing influence of Reggae and World Beat. Then we'll take you to Woodstock, and call off the roster, with lots of great music and commentary. The first mythical Rock tour--the Rolling Stones ‘69 tour of America, is up next. That will take us to the final show of the tour, on a dark December night in California, where everything that can go wrong, will go wrong, and the consequences will be tragic. We close out with some thoughts on the year and on the decade we've just completed, and on what comes next. This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.@PantheonPodsListen in HD only at www.rocknrollarchaeology.com

It was a proud moment for the Major Scale to have the chance to speak with Karl Berger. Active since the 1960s, Berger has forged a career as a composer and vibist with an ear for talent, arranging, and bringing a sense of melody and groove to the avant-garde. Taking a cue from his first encounter with Don Cherry, jazz's legendary gypsy traveller and inventor of World Beat. Berger has recorded under his own leadership with luminaries like Carla Bley, Ornette Coleman, and Lee Konitz – as well being tapped to enrich the music of Jeff Buckley, Natalie Merchant, and even Britney Spears! The Da Capo Trio are an unsigned group with an amazing and fresh take on one of the basics: the jazz trio. Drums, bass, and the Fender Rhodes piano sound get a 21st century treatment with dazzling virtuosity and accessibility. With their set of originals, standards (Oleo), and surprising arrangements (Pat Matheny), classic jazz jargon says it best here with the Da Capo Trio "so far out, that they're in." SONG CREDITS FOR THIS EPISODE: THEME: Jazz Phantom by Chomsk' (from the album "Different Beats" on Magentic Records). FIRST HALF: Symphony for Improvisers (Excerpt) by Don Cherry (from the album "Symphony for Improvisers" on Blue Note Records) Excerpt from UCF workshop by Karl Berger Movement 5 by Karl Berger (from the album "Gently Unfamiliar" on Tzadik records). Eternal Rhythm pt. 1 by Don Cherry w/ Karl Berger (from the album "Eternal Rhythm" on MPS Records). Lilac Wine by Jeff Buckley (from the album "Grace arr. by Karl Berger" on Columbia Records). Travel South by Karl Berger (from the album "Karl Berger and Friends" on Black Saint Records). Transit by Karl Berger (from the album "Transit" on Black Saint Records). SECOND HALF: Oleo, Someday My Prince Will Come, Phase Dance, and Doc Wilky Mob Blues by The Da Capo Trio (from the album "Vine Street Performance"). ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! The Major Scale is the title, the motto and the mission are, Jazz- past, present, future, and everything in between. A lot of focus will be on new and fresh sounds, deep cuts, closer looks at underrated artists, taking a different look at some of the titans of the genre, and getting the two cents worth from a number of surprise guests and sources. The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake. Fresh perspectives and commentary from the likes of Rock legend Al Kooper, who weighed in on the gospel. From The New Yorker, Amanda Petrusich expounds on her article about the movement to rename the Williamsburg Bridge in honor of Sonny Rollins. We explore the Soul-Jazz experiments of the Rascals. Grace Kelly from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert talks about her pop-up/flash mob concerts. Plus Thundercat, Henry Mancini, Ghostface Killah, Jaimie Branch, Nels Cline, Badbadnotgood, Cecil Taylor, and more get pick up on the Major Scale radar. Produced in Central Florida, this program seeks to become one of the defining voices of this Native American art form, and everything else that finds itself under it's umbrella. Think about programming and content found on the likes of World Cafe, Philadelphia, PA. Tiny Desk from Washington D.C., and KEXP Live from Seattle, WA. and that's what the Major Scale strives to do. For the curious, and lovers of music who like the details in between.
