Interview by Kris PetersNorwegian hard rock/punk/metal outfit Blood Command are better known for their hard-hitting, punchier numbers that provide a sense of palpitation and venom when played in the live arena.Since the addition of former Pagan vocalist Nikki Brumen from Australia, the band have taken on a more ferocious edge on the back of Brumen's take-no-prisoners approach to music that has seen Blood Command spread their wings as far as this country for the first time at last year's Good Things Festival. After completing her first album as vocalist, Praise Armageddonism in 2022, Brumen has now fully claimed the role as Blood Command frontwoman as her own, allowing founding member and guitarist Yngve Andersen greater freedom to express his own musical personality, in turn elevating the band into another stratosphere altogether. That newfound expression has translated to Blood Command's upcoming track Losing Faith, a song which will come as a shock to some people into the band, but will be seen more as a natural extension by others.Venturing into acoustic territory, Losing Faith features just Brumen and Andersen, with both providing vocals in a country-style hoedown of a tune that focuses on the fallout of unrequited love.HEAVY caught up with both of them on the eve of Friday's premiere of the song."I think that fans will maybe not be too shocked," Brumen began. "Yngve and I have spoken about this quite at length and I think the real diehard Blood Command fans might be pleasantly surprised. I think they might not even be surprised because it is still thematically very Blood Command. But perhaps for people that don't really know the band and maybe pigeonhole us as a heavy band with screaming vocals and guitars they are the people who might be quite shocked. It's a bit of a country western cowboy tune (laughs), so I think that there will be some surprised people which is what we really want. We like to keep people on their toes."With the subject matter of Losing Faith centering on love failed and lost, we ask Brumen and Andersen which one of them got dumped for inspiration."It's not about a particular event," Andersen replied when he finished laughing. "It's about tapping into those feelings. Everyone has experienced heartache once in their lifetime at least, so I think it's very relatable.""It's a typical Blood Command thing to write about," Brumen added. "A lot of the themes for many songs that Yngve has written in the past have had that feeling or that meaning behind it. Before we wrote this song Yngve sent me this really beautiful country and western song, sort of… it wasn't a similar message, but it kind of had a similar idea in that it was about someone pretending not to love someone and putting on a mask and acting that they didn't love someone, and we said wouldn't it be cool to write a song like that. That's where the idea might have stemmed from."In the full interview, Nikki and Yngve discuss Losing Faith in greater detail, why they elected to do the track acoustically, the added vocals of Yngve and what they bring to the song, their recent tour of Australia and coming back, future plans and more.
It is a huge honour for us to have Nikki from Blood Command with us. We talk about everything from why the band are rocking the Adidas fit on stage to more serious matters like sexual assault. Be warned if you are sensitive to this kind of thing, but we feel that it is such an important thing to speak up about. Thank you Nikki for sharing your experience regarding this topic.Blood Command has a new single to be released on Friday 17th of march, and according to Nikki, it will be something very different.Takk så meget, prisrčna hvala and thank you kindly for guesting our little podcast Nikki![We do not own any music played in this podcast. Sometimes life works out in the strangest ways. Nikki Brumen was the singer in Pagan, a band from Australia that I was really excited about, until unexpectedly - from where I was enjoying their blackened punk from, anyway – they split up, in 2020. That, as Nikki will explain, was a pretty fucking heavy blow to recover from... But wait! A member of Pagan told her that Blood Command - a band from Bergen, Norway that, since 2010, have released four near perfect records – needed a new singer. And they wanted Nikki. Which was great! Although it was going to require Nikki packing up her life and moving to the other side of the world. There she would find, not surf, but snow. A new life. New opportunities. As a huge fan of Blood Command's last record, 2022's Praise Armageddonism, which Nikki made her vocal debut on, I had to get her on the podcast to find out what that was like, didn't I... HEAVY had the honour of conducting backstage interviews with a selection of bands for the final Good Things Festival show in Brisbane recently, which we are going to drip-feed you just because we can!Good Things provided highlights for so many reasons, but perhaps the best feel-good story of them all is the homecoming of ex-Pagan vocalist Nikki Brumen who took the gamble of a lifetime some 18 months ago when she packed up everything and moved to Norway to join 'deathpop' outfit Blood Command.Of course, she nailed it and now fronts one of the hottest bands on the planet, with their set at Good Things my pick of the day!HEAVY caught up with Nikki and guitarist Yngve Andersen before they hit the stage. The sound quality may be affected in patches due to the interviews being recorded live with a full festival raging behind us, but sit back and enjoy the fully immersive experience of each band as they navigate the day. They are also sparsely edited for maximum effect.Full video interviews will be published in the near future.
We would love to welcome you back to a very special episode of Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall which is back to celebrate the return of Good Things Festival - heading up Australia's East Coast again in December with a stack of heavy hitters! In this episode podcast host Paul 'Browny' Brown (remember him?) is joined by festival lineup acts including Jimmy Kyle of Chasing Ghosts who discusses the very important issues and subject manner surrounding indigenous affairs and history through his music. Nikki Brumen calls through to the show again, this time representing her brand new band Blood Command and how she packed up her life in Australia to join the Norweigan group. Jason Aalon Butler of Fever 333 is back as well discussing how the band are using their voice and platform to invoke change towards people of colour in the US (and around the world) and German party boys Electric Callboy make their debut on the show talking about their whirlwind rise to fame, being snubbed by Eurovision and their plans for their maiden tour down under. Music is a beautiful thing in that it transcends boundaries, both emotional and geographical.Usually, this sense is felt more by the fans who listen to music rather than the performers, but on occasion that role is reversed, and the musician gets to experience the magic inherent in their art.Such was the case recently, when Melbourne singer Nikki Brumen suddenly found herself at the crossroads when her band Pagan broke up. Pagan had been building steadily on the Australian music scene and were starting to get the recognition they deserved but that accounted for nothing once the band called time.Faced with an uncertain future just before COVID decimated the world, Brumen found herself presented an opportunity, which, long story short, resulted in her eventual relocation to Norway as vocalist for Blood Command.HEAVY sat down with Nikki earlier this week to hear the full story."In February of 2020 I had just recently slit up with my previous band Pagan who were a hardcore band from Melbourne,” she began. “We'd all just decided to go separate ways. There was no drama, it was just people's life decisions resulted in us deciding to break the band up. I didn't know what I was going to do musically, but I knew I still wanted to be a vocalist. I got a random message on Facebook from a Norwegian person by the name of Yngve Andersen, and they said 'hey, I heard your band Pagan just broke up, what are you doing with music now?' I responded saying I didn't know and then he wrote I've got a proposition for you. Will you be the new vocalist for Blood Command, who are based in Bergen in Norway?I had actually travelled to Bergen back in 2011 and then I was into black metal and fascinated by Scandinavia. So, I'd gone to Bergen, and I loved Norway and so without hesitation - not even in the amount of time it took me to reply the word yes - that is how long it took me to take up the proposition."In the full interview, Nikki tells more of the story of how she joined Blood Command, discusses the upcoming album Praise Armageddonism, recording the vocals from Australia while the rest of the band was in Norway, the band's eclectic sound and how she has impacted it, her relocation to Norway, meeting her new band mates for the first time, future plans and more.
International Women's Day is a global holiday observed every year on March 8th. With origins tracing back to 1909, the focal point is the women's rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. Along with a very special interview with Nikki Brumen (Blood Command, ex-Pagan) this show aims to celebrate the contribution of women in music, while also exploring the challenges for women in a heavily male-dominated scene. We have a jampacked special episode for you this week to celebrate The Amity Affliction's upcoming Heaven And Hell east coast tour featuring Underoath, Crossfaith and Pagan, who, all join the podcast for a chat. The main event is The Amity Affliction's Ahren Stringer who discusses the band's intentions with the Brisbane leg of the tour in which they're hoping to turn the Heaven and Hell Festival into an annual event, if the punters get behind it. He also chats with podcast host Browny about the year that was the Misery saga and the strange, yet totally expected reactions fans had when they first heard the release, some disapproving of the drastic change in style, only for them to come back around the longer they sat on it. He also talks about the band's future, the next release and he reflects on their earlier "glory" days (pun intended) and how far they've come since then. Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath calls in to chat about their last appearance in Australia for UNIFY and why they didn't make it to the west coast of Australia for their Erase Me album cycle. Kenta 'Ken' Koie from Crossfaith also reflects on their UNIFY set back in January and gives us all an insight into their partying lifestyle while Pagan frontwoman Nikki Brumen takes a look back at their hectic year which has seen them flying to dominate UK audiences, gain massive popularity in Australia and what direction they'll be taking their next release (and if we'll hear some new material on this tour). Plus we play a stack of tracks from the above-mentioned bands and kick it all off with Thornhill's new song 'Nurture', which no doubt fans will hear when they play alongside Trophy Eyes, Make Them Suffer, Southeast Desert Metal, Void of Vision and Endless Heights in Brisbane. #WoSUATW #TheAmityAffliction #AmityAffliction #TAA #AhrenStringer #Misery #HeavenAndHellTour #SpencerChamberlain #Underoath #KentaKoie #Crossfaith #NikkiBrumen #Pagan #AustralianBands #Metal #Metalcore #BlackMetal #MelodicMetal #Thornhill #MusicPodcast #WallOfSoundAU
NIKKI BRUMEN is a name that is going to be around for A LONG time! She fronts one of Australia's most hyped (and for great reason) bands - PAGAN. She's Charismatic, Smart, Passionate and most of all - a fantastic human. I got to sit down with her before Pagan played at a local bar, right before they headed off on their 2nd trip to Europe in 6 months - to talk about (amongst other things) a very overlooked subject in todays heavy music scene - Women, and their under representation. Have a listen to Nikki's story, about her outsider from birth beginnings - to how she's owned it - and turned it into something that younger musicians and creative types can aspire to today. Pagan frontwoman Nikki Brumen chats to Christina about recording vocals for the Melbourne band's killer debut album "Black Wash" in one day and their combustible and original sound which she describes as the lovechild of French pop, Italian disco, Norwegian black metal and a demonic Karen O. We also discuss ridiculous and inappropriate Norwegian black metal stories, her previous life in a band with her talented artist twin sister, the heavy frontwomen she loves to share a stage with and the healthy and supportive Melbourne rock and roll scene.
Nikki Brumen is the ferocious voice of Australian hardcore outfit, Pagan. Here, Nikki chats to Don't Fret Club host, Jess Hope, about the band's debut album, songwriting and letting go of her anxieties through music. "Pagan’s debut album Black Wash is a collection of 11 spells bookended by curtain raiser ‘Il Malocchio Si Apre’ (‘The Evil Eye Opens’) and their deathblow ‘Il Malocchio Si Chiude’ (‘The Evil Eye Closes’) brought to life by producer Mike Deslandes, in part at Abbotsford’s The Aviary and South Melbourne’s Holes and Corners studios. Together, Nikki Brumen (vocals), Xavier Santilli (guitar), Dan Bonnici (bass) and Matt Marasco (drums), play like their lives depend on it, paying homage to their punk rock and heavy music ethics (‘The Greatest Love Songs’), drawing inspiration from the dancefloors of neon-soaked discotheques (‘Year of the Dog’) and back-alley rock and roll clubs of old (‘Silver’). Nikki bares her soul, her ferocious and haunting howls navigating swiftly between the theological world the band have created through striking imagery and lyrical symbolism, and the real world in which she has lived and survived." Ben talked to Xavier Santilli about their debut album, Black Wash, how they approached re-recording unreleased songs and feelings about the first headline tour of Australia. Aired 5th Jul 2018. What do you do when two great bands have albums out on the same day? You get them both on the podcast for a double co-host special edition and that's what the plan is this week with Nikki Brumen of Pagan and Dez Fafara of DevilDriver. Firstly, the heavy/black metal Pagan from Melbourne are about to release their debut album Black Wash and so far we've heard nothing but great things from the band of misfits. In the time we were first introduced to them at Big Sound 2017, they've blown up across the country playing shows all over the joint and even securing an East Coast support slot on Rise Against's Wolves Tour. Being a women in the heavy music industry can be hard, but Nikki's "no holds barred" and "no-fucks-given" attitude towards topics such as gender imbalance and bigotry will certainly result in her leaving her mark and becoming a voice/force to be reckoned with. If you haven't listened to Pagan before today, guarantee you'll follow them up following this podcast. Dez Fafara on the other hand needs no introducion, but for the uninitated, he's been a key member of the heavy music industry fronting the bands Coal Chamber (RIP) and DevilDriver who are releasing their new album Outlaws 'til The End: Vol. 1 on Friday July 6th. The approach with this new album at first raised a few eyebrows, because the band have tackled country songs like 'Copperhead Road', 'Ghost Riders in the Sky' and Willie Nelson's 'Whiskey River' but with a heavy metal twist. All the songs have been given a heavier, faster and better makeover and even feature some special guests including Johnny Cash's son John Carter Cash, his wife Ana Christina, Lamb of God's Randy Blythe and Mark Morton, Burton C. Bell, Brock Lindow and many more. The heavy metaller turned country man more than happily explains his reasons for taking on this interesting approach and the stories behind the recording process, including Johnny Cash's love for heavy metal. There's also new music from A Breach of Silence, Temtris, Daybreak and Hellions, throwbacks from Sensaii, Heaven The Axe, Anthrax and Killswitch Engage + heaps more... #WoSUATW #Pagan #NikkiBrumen #BlackMetal #HeavyMetal #DezFafara #DevilDriver #BlackWash #OutlawsTilTheEnd #OutlawsTilTheEndVol1 #LambOfGod #JohnnyCash #ABreachOfSilence #Daybreak #AustralianBands #Hardcore #Sensaii #Temtris #HeavenTheAxe #Anthrax #ScottIsn #KillswitchEngage #KSE #Hellions #Podcast #MusicPodcast #WallOfsoundAU
