Are we underestimating our capacity for social change?...Today, Abbie and Karen discuss quanta, entanglement, and collapsing potential as they explore mattering and social change....Karen O'Brien is a Professor of Human Geography at the University of Oslo, Norway. She is also co-founder of cCHANGE, an organisation that supports deep and strategic engagement with transformations to sustainability. Her research on the human and social dimensions of environmental change emphasises integrative approaches, including how beliefs, values, worldviews, and paradigms influence systems change and social change. She is particularly interested in the relationship between adaptation and transformations to sustainability and in exploring how quantum social science can inform how we understand, engage with, and scale transformative change. In 2021, she was co-recipient of the BBVA Foundation's Frontiers of Knowledge Award for Climate Change. Karen's recent books include You Matter More Than You Think: Quantum Social Change for a Thriving World and Climate and Society: Transforming the Future (with Robin Leichenko). She has participated in four IPCC reports and is currently co-chair of the International Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) transformative change assessment. Religion, Spirituality and Public Health: Competing and Complementary Epistemes (British Academy, 2025) focuses on exploring the role of different 'ways of knowing' or arriving at truth, i.e. epistemes, particularly those found in religious and alternative health milieus. While biomedical solutions offer a dominant narrative, these are articulated differently in global contexts. Moreover, individuals often draw upon alternative framings that are sometimes oppositional to and at other times engaged with directives from medical and governmental authorities. The focus of this volume is worldviews and epistemes that are often marginalised or rejected in dominant discourses -- from shamanism in Korea to African Pentecostalism in Britain, and from global online 'AntiVax' narratives to traditional Siddha medicine in South India. Detailed case studies explore the contested, competing and strategically aligned relationships between mainstream and marginal epistemes; between religious healing, spirituality and biomedicine; and between politics and belief. These explorations promote greater insight into how marginalised religious epistemes are employed. Which beliefs and practices are drawn upon to create meaningful and effective responses? And how can we better understand the depth and breadth of these reactions to design more successful public health strategies for future global health crises? A live recording from our recent Listening Party for Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! (2009) at the Big Romance in Dublin. The third album from the New York band of Karen O, Nick Zinner and Brian Chase marked out the trio from the scrappy garage guitar of their debut (Fever To Tell) and its restrained followup (Show Your Bones) to a glorious reinvention of synthesised art-rock filled with ecstatic and anthemic heights. Featuring two of their biggest hits in Heads Will Roll and Zero, the album brought disco and dance energy to their widescreen rock music, and was full of confidence and bolder sounds with sacrificing the YYYs identity. For Andrea Cleary's last listening party for the foreseeable, she posits the theory that the album marked the end of the indie era of the 2000s where indie music was practically mainstream and Beyoncé and Jay-Z were attended Grizzly Bear shows and New York rock bands were known to all. * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Listen on Apple | Android | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link
In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Karen O'Donnell, BSN, RN, CEN, TCRN where we discussed how limiting beliefs, stressors of traditional nursing roles and always being told "NO" gave fuel to a desire to step into entrepreneurship as a means to gain freedom to create the nursing career that allows for the creativity and flexibility that Karen truly wanted and deserved! ✨We both agreed that the glass ceiling is very low in traditional institutional nursing roles, so instead of just accepting the status quo - Karen put systems into place and she eventually broke through that glass ceiling and is now helping other nurses reclaim their autonomy to raise the ceiling to new heights through entrepreneurship and emotional freedom techniques (EFT)!

In this episode, Wendy speaks with professor, writer, and thought leader Karen O'Brien. Karen is an expert on the human and social dimensions of climate change, and her work helps us understand the role of the mind and worldview in how we create and respond to environmental change, and global change more broadly. This conversation covers many topics, including: her path into environmental studies and understanding how humans respond to climate change; consequences of a reductionist worldview; understanding quantum social change; entanglement, and relationships as a fundamental aspect of our world; the importance of ethics and values in a system; our power as individuals to change systems; exploring causality and challenging the 'single cause'; why the way we show up matters; how contemplative practice can help us embody transformative change; envisioning a new paradigm; Indigenous wisdom and interconnected views of nature; emotional difficulties in deeply accepting an interconnected reality; acknowledging and working with eco-grief and eco-anxiety; living with uncertainty; challenges in measuring transformative change; art as a lens to understanding; and the many possibilities for scaling change into societies. Karen O'Donoghue is a champion for not only better bread, but also better food quality, choices and better growing methods. We originally recorded this session in the studio as a recipe to be cut down and edited for YouTube. But when I watched it back I thought that this could easily be a podcast episode. The way Karen breaks down in simple terms the benefits of processes like soaking to maximise the accessibility of nutrients in the flour, is perfect for a long form listen. You can watch the full episode on YouTube if you're interested in how this recipe turned out, but I think you'll be able to imagine just how good it looked, smelt and tasted from our descriptions alone.Karen and her company, Happy Tummy Co inform people about the need to spend more on health by spending more on better quality food, invest in the soil and re-engage with the food supply. You can check out Karen's bread, recipes and idyllic bakery in Ireland at www.thehappytummyco.com PLUS, we cook up a bunch of different bread recipes on our YouTube channel, just search ‘Karen' on The Doctor's Kitchen to find the videos.

On today's episode of Lipps Service, Scott sits down with four members of the contemporary New York City music scene: manager Ryan Gentles, singer-songwriter Bec Lauder of Bec Lauder & The Noise, and frontman Zane Acord and guitarist Jack Bradley of The Thing. The first conversation is with Ryan, who explores his time managing The Strokes and several other bands of the “indie sleaze” era. Ryan talks about securing The Strokes' record deal and helping craft the band's image. He also discusses the current state of the music business and the role played by social media in discovering new bands. Next, Scott talks with Bec about her career beginnings, favorite spots in NYC, and her top 5 NYC artists of the 2000s. Finally, Scott is joined by Zane and Jack of The Thing, an up-and-coming four-piece rock band, who talk about their musical influences, the modern touring industry, and how radio continues to play a role in bringing artists widespread exposure.
