In 1984, the West Indies celebrated a 5-0 test series defeat of England on British soil - a historic cricketing victory that became known as Blackwash. But for Windies fans, it was more than just a record score-line. It was also recognition at a time when many British Caribbean communities were suffering racism, unemployment and poverty. They flooded onto the pitch to celebrate, unfurling a banner in bold painted letters which read ‘Blackwash'. It had a huge impact, as West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding tells Jane Wilkinson. Nikki Brumen fronts Melbourne's "goth 'n' roll" darlings Pagan, who after releasing their debut album Black Wash through EVP Records have begun to slowly take over the world. Nikki and Dan from Melbourne based heavy rock band Pagan have a chat with Cam, backstage at Unify Gathering 2019
Pagan frontwoman Nikki Brumen chats to Christina about recording vocals for the Melbourne band's killer debut album "Black Wash" in one day and their combustible and original sound which she describes as the lovechild of French pop, Italian disco, Norwegian black metal and a demonic Karen O. We also discuss ridiculous and inappropriate Norwegian black metal stories, her previous life in a band with her talented artist twin sister, the heavy frontwomen she loves to share a stage with and the healthy and supportive Melbourne rock and roll scene.
Melbourne band Pagan aren't concerned with round holes and square pegs – they're too busy trying to kick the door down and rip down the foundations. The genre-defiant quartet dropped their debut album, Black Wash, earlier in the year to much fanfare – although they've had quite the run-up to its release, and it's far from their first rodeo. Vocalist Nikki Brumen and bassist Dan Bonnici share a lot of history together, and over some beers at Young Henry's in Enmore they divulge basically all of it for your listening pleasure. Pagan play The Grace Darling in Melbourne on November 5 with In Trenches and Year Of The Rat. "Pagan’s debut album Black Wash is a collection of 11 spells bookended by curtain raiser ‘Il Malocchio Si Apre’ (‘The Evil Eye Opens’) and their deathblow ‘Il Malocchio Si Chiude’ (‘The Evil Eye Closes’) brought to life by producer Mike Deslandes, in part at Abbotsford’s The Aviary and South Melbourne’s Holes and Corners studios. Together, Nikki Brumen (vocals), Xavier Santilli (guitar), Dan Bonnici (bass) and Matt Marasco (drums), play like their lives depend on it, paying homage to their punk rock and heavy music ethics (‘The Greatest Love Songs’), drawing inspiration from the dancefloors of neon-soaked discotheques (‘Year of the Dog’) and back-alley rock and roll clubs of old (‘Silver’). Nikki bares her soul, her ferocious and haunting howls navigating swiftly between the theological world the band have created through striking imagery and lyrical symbolism, and the real world in which she has lived and survived." Ben talked to Xavier Santilli about their debut album, Black Wash, how they approached re-recording unreleased songs and feelings about the first headline tour of Australia. Aired 5th Jul 2018. What do you do when two great bands have albums out on the same day? You get them both on the podcast for a double co-host special edition and that's what the plan is this week with Nikki Brumen of Pagan and Dez Fafara of DevilDriver. Firstly, the heavy/black metal Pagan from Melbourne are about to release their debut album Black Wash and so far we've heard nothing but great things from the band of misfits. In the time we were first introduced to them at Big Sound 2017, they've blown up across the country playing shows all over the joint and even securing an East Coast support slot on Rise Against's Wolves Tour. Being a women in the heavy music industry can be hard, but Nikki's "no holds barred" and "no-fucks-given" attitude towards topics such as gender imbalance and bigotry will certainly result in her leaving her mark and becoming a voice/force to be reckoned with. If you haven't listened to Pagan before today, guarantee you'll follow them up following this podcast. Dez Fafara on the other hand needs no introducion, but for the uninitated, he's been a key member of the heavy music industry fronting the bands Coal Chamber (RIP) and DevilDriver who are releasing their new album Outlaws 'til The End: Vol. 1 on Friday July 6th. The approach with this new album at first raised a few eyebrows, because the band have tackled country songs like 'Copperhead Road', 'Ghost Riders in the Sky' and Willie Nelson's 'Whiskey River' but with a heavy metal twist. All the songs have been given a heavier, faster and better makeover and even feature some special guests including Johnny Cash's son John Carter Cash, his wife Ana Christina, Lamb of God's Randy Blythe and Mark Morton, Burton C. Bell, Brock Lindow and many more. The heavy metaller turned country man more than happily explains his reasons for taking on this interesting approach and the stories behind the recording process, including Johnny Cash's love for heavy metal. There's also new music from A Breach of Silence, Temtris, Daybreak and Hellions, throwbacks from Sensaii, Heaven The Axe, Anthrax and Killswitch Engage + heaps more... #WoSUATW #Pagan #NikkiBrumen #BlackMetal #HeavyMetal #DezFafara #DevilDriver #BlackWash #OutlawsTilTheEnd #OutlawsTilTheEndVol1 #LambOfGod #JohnnyCash #ABreachOfSilence #Daybreak #AustralianBands #Hardcore #Sensaii #Temtris #HeavenTheAxe #Anthrax #ScottIsn #KillswitchEngage #KSE #Hellions #Podcast #MusicPodcast #WallOfsoundAU
