Interview by Kris PetersHailing from the quiet town of Taree on the New South Wales Central Coast, emerging metal outfit Diamond Construct are anything but.Brash, loud, and in your face with no respite, Diamond Construct are a hurricane of musical intensity that is only just starting to gather real force.Since dropping their self-titled debut album around the turn of the decade, Diamond Construct have been working tirelessly on the live circuit, landing shows with Alpha Wolf, Justice For The Damned, Stray From The Path and Bury Tomorrow, with recent times seeing them perform at CVLTFEST plus hit the road with two of the Japanese bands on the bill, Crossfaith and Paledusk.Last year saw Diamond Construct sign with prestigious US label Pale Chord, subsequently releasing three killer singles, Hell Inside You, Switchblade OST and Jynx. All three are taken from the band's new album Angel Killer Zero, which will be unleashed on April 26.HEAVY caught up with Diamond Construct frontman Kynan Groundwater to find out more. We ask him if those trio of singles are a good sonic representation of what to expect from the whole album."I think it's a pretty big picture, but it's not the full picture," he measured. "There's so much more to dive in on in the album. When writing such a big piece and body of work like Angel Killer Zero and having that diverse sound that we've had over the years, it was hard to fit everything into just 11 songs. If anyone thinks that they've heard it all from those three, they've got another thing coming. Because there's so much on that album. There's a song for everyone."We ask him to further explain Angel Killer Zero from a musical perspective."It's not a concept album, but it's definitely got themes and concepts about it that tell a bit of a story," he replied. "So, obviously from start to finish it runs smoothly together with some of the interludes, and it's got some exerts from video games and stuff that I love to play. I love the anime stuff. We've got the robotics voice introducing some of the themes about the album, so that's something that came into it earlier in the piece. Musically, it's just a big expansion of DCX2. We went back and revisited the sound of what made us popular in the first place with Psychosis and Enigma, and then we blended that with the heavier sounds from the self-titled, which we know a lot of people like as well. It was just a big meshing of that, as well as adding in so many more elements that we haven't explored yet."In the full interview, Kynan talks more about what to expect from Angel Killer Zero, how it differs to their self-titled debut album, the anime connection and how it translates to the album, the themes explored on the album, signing with Pale Chord, their upcoming regional tour and what to expect and more.

Interview by Kris PetersCVLTFEST came to Brisbane's Eaton's Hill Hotel recently, bringing with it a tornado of hard rock and metal performed by some of this country's headline bands as well as some that should one day attain that status themselves. But it wasn't just a celebration of Australian music, with organisers Alpha Wolf assembling a strong volley of international acts from Japan – Crossfaith, Paledusk – New York – Emmure – and France – ten56. It was a coming together of music, cultures and music lovers under one magnificent roof in one afternoon/ evening. Not that HEAVY got to see much of the action unfolding on stage because we were hidden away on the first floor of the hotel, lying in wait for unsuspecting musicians to enter our line of sight so we could strap them to the casting couch and ask a few questions.Today we bring to you our chat with Kynan Groundwater from local band Diamond Construct.

We have a jampacked special episode for you this week to celebrate The Amity Affliction's upcoming Heaven And Hell east coast tour featuring Underoath, Crossfaith and Pagan, who, all join the podcast for a chat. The main event is The Amity Affliction's Ahren Stringer who discusses the band's intentions with the Brisbane leg of the tour in which they're hoping to turn the Heaven and Hell Festival into an annual event, if the punters get behind it. He also chats with podcast host Browny about the year that was the Misery saga and the strange, yet totally expected reactions fans had when they first heard the release, some disapproving of the drastic change in style, only for them to come back around the longer they sat on it. He also talks about the band's future, the next release and he reflects on their earlier "glory" days (pun intended) and how far they've come since then. Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath calls in to chat about their last appearance in Australia for UNIFY and why they didn't make it to the west coast of Australia for their Erase Me album cycle. Kenta 'Ken' Koie from Crossfaith also reflects on their UNIFY set back in January and gives us all an insight into their partying lifestyle while Pagan frontwoman Nikki Brumen takes a look back at their hectic year which has seen them flying to dominate UK audiences, gain massive popularity in Australia and what direction they'll be taking their next release (and if we'll hear some new material on this tour). Plus we play a stack of tracks from the above-mentioned bands and kick it all off with Thornhill's new song 'Nurture', which no doubt fans will hear when they play alongside Trophy Eyes, Make Them Suffer, Southeast Desert Metal, Void of Vision and Endless Heights in Brisbane. #WoSUATW #TheAmityAffliction #AmityAffliction #TAA #AhrenStringer #Misery #HeavenAndHellTour #SpencerChamberlain #Underoath #KentaKoie #Crossfaith #NikkiBrumen #Pagan #AustralianBands #Metal #Metalcore #BlackMetal #MelodicMetal #Thornhill #MusicPodcast #WallOfSoundAU

SharQ Talk #57 has been live recorded at Tivoli de Helling Utrecht Crossfaith has been around for a long time, but the steps they are making into Europe are for the most of us "new". Putting their heart and soul into music and sending a lot of energy from the stage at a live show, the band is conquering the world fast! With a crossover mix between metal, hiphop, electronic music, drum 'n bass and other genres they break borders and just do what they love to do. It's a different way of looking to the "metal" genre but it does work amazingly well. Touring with Of Mice & Men and Bleed from Within gives them a new step in the right direction. Tonight a sold out show in Tivoli de Helling, where I could speak with Kenta and Hiroki about the touring life, the differences between Japan and Europe and they plug a band called Paledusk (Varied on Apple Music). Japan's Crossfaith are returning to Australia as support to Amity Affliction in September, on the back of last years acclaimed album Ex_Machina which many observers claim is the heaviest release of the band's career."When we started making that album it was supposed to be the heaviest we had made", affirmed vocalist Kenta 'Ken' Koie, "but I think it is well balanced. It has mellow stuff and more bouncy stuff and of course there are heavy songs such as 'The Perfect Nightmare' but... it was based on a concept so we didn't have to make the album heavy as such. Now we are writing new songs and they are SUPER heavy, so please wait for it".While being easier to listen to because they follow one central theme, Ken argues that the actual writing process for Ex_Machina was anything but."It was hard", he stressed. "before we made the music we started conversations on the concept and, yeah, it was hard. Talking, talking, talking before making the music was stressful but also important and everyone knew that so we didn't give up and we kept on talking and kept on making music, but it was hard. The concept is kind of... it's hard to tell and people are always thinking about it and how the technology and the humanity blend so it worked but was still kind of hard to finish".In the full interview Ken tells us what to expect from the bands shows, talks about their relationship with their fans, heavy music in Japan, how much goes into a Crossfaith live performance, why they write and sing their songs in English and how that made things harder with fans in their own country, early goals for the band, how their sound came about, how clean vocals have steadily built themselves into their albums and more.

After disappointing a legion of fans around the world by calling time on the band in 2013, Underoath surprised everyone - including themselves - when the decision to reunite for a run of anniversary shows for Define The Great Line in 2015 ultimately led to a unanimous decision to reignite the band's career."We played six nights a week with one day off and these shows were two hours long"! recalled vocalist Spencer Chamberlain. "I was singing for two hours per night for six days in a row every week, I was fucking dead! The one day we had off a week I was laying in bed thinking how am I gonna make it through this tour? I think during the first practice me and Aaron (Gillespie, drums) had talked about why aren't we just going for this? This is stupid. We should be making music. Halfway through that tour me and Aaron decided that we were going to write a record. Whether it be Underoath or not we weren't sure but me and him decided we were gonna make some music together and we had to wait for the other guys to figure it out. I think halfway through that tour we decided we would do a European run and then halfway through that, we did the Australian tour and decided everyone was on board to make a record. It did take time. It wasn't right away like 'hey, let's get the band back together and make a record and do this full time again. It was very step by step".In the full interview Spencer talks about Underoath's upcoming Australian tour with Amity Affliction, Crossfaith and Pagan, the fact they are actually supporting not headlining, the benefits of playing to another bands crowd, last years comeback album Erase Me, the break up of the band and how close it came to being permanent, the musical changes in the band between their 2010 album Disambiguation and Erase Me eight years later, a message for Aussie fans and more.
