Interview by Kris PetersWhen Dez Fafara announced that Coal Chamber was on indefinite hiatus in 2016, stating that the success of DevilDriver was taking precedence, the heavy metal community to a man fell under a thick wave of despair.Bridging the gap between metal and industrial groove with an impossibly infectious tempo, Coal Chamber helped revolutionise the sound of metal, spawning a movement that has rapidly grown into a way of life.Songs like Loco, Sway, Big Truck, and Oddity are etched into the annals of metal forever, and Coal Chamber became more than a band. They become an institution.Fafara has previously steadfastly refused to discuss let alone entertain the thought of a reunion despite repeated pleas from metalheads the world over, appearing to shun any notion of a reunion to the point many stopped even asking. But public hope and expectation simmered once more in late 2022 when Fafara announced Coal Chamber would reform and play the 2023 Sick New World Festival, and the rest, as they say, is history. That festival turned into another and then more shows before the dream pairing of Coal Chamber and Mudvayne joined formidable forces to announce a US run that had fans clamoring for tickets for what promised to be the concert event of the year. With both bands set to include Australia on their tour of domination in February, Fafara sat down with HEAVY for an open and honest discussion about the past, present and future of Coal Chamber."Cannot wait," he enthused. "We're excited. We went out with Mudvayne all Summer and did big amphitheaters. It was an amazing package. All the crews and everybody got along really well, so no drama over a seven-week tour was a great thing. Obviously, the pairing works extremely well, so when it was put to us to come over we decided yeah, we cannot say no to this."Often with tours that generate this much excitement so far out from the shows, it can feel like an anti-climax of sorts by the time the stage lights actually go down, so we ask Fafara what Coal Chamber will be doing to make sure the reality by far exceeds the hype."We're gonna bring good production, and we're gonna be on it, man," he promised. "Some of the shows that I saw from the Summer on YouTube were the tightest we have done in our entire lives. So you're getting a very special Coal Chamber right now. We're firing on all cylinders, and we cannot wait to come down. Last night we were texting for two hours straight, and I was laughing hysterically. We were just having such a great time, and that's what you want out of a band. You want a band that enjoys what they're doing, and we're gonna enjoy coming down and giving it 110%."We push Fafara to tell us more about the recent run of US shows so we can gain even a small insight into what to expect."The shows were great," he affirmed. "The Summer was fantastic, and it was great to see the audience out there, which was predominantly the younger generation… I mean people that were 22, 20 years old and born when we broke up (laughs). It's pretty crazy. Some of the biggest bands anyway in the genre have always been Korn etc, but I think us as a pairing coming to Australia will be fantastic shows and everyone should get their tickets right away because it's definitely gonna go clean. They're definitely gonna sell out."In the full interview, Dez talks more about the recent shows, if he felt nervous the first show back with Coal Chamber, tapping into different sides of his musical personality going from DevilDriver to Coal Chamber, the early days of the band and the scene that inspired them, promoting before internet and tricks of the trade, what drew people to Coal Chamber in the beginning, their album Rivals and how he feels it was 10 years too early, new music and more.To get this interview plus more great yarns, music and news delivered FREE to your inbox every week simply follow this link and subscribe now https://heavymag.com.au/subscribe/
Interview by Kris PetersMudvayne are one of the most influential bands when it comes to the genre of music they helped to pioneer. When they dropped their debut album L.D 50 in the year 2000 it is fair to say the entire sonic landscape of heavy metal shifted irreversibly and the nu-metal movement that had until then just been threatening to take flight now had a tough-as-nails pilot who was unafraid to break convention and expectation without fear of retribution.Quite simply, Mudvayne took a collective musical vision and rebirthed that vision in their own image. And, more importantly, made it work. After continuing their steep upward trajectory for another decade after that debut release, Mudvayne disbanded without a declaration of resolve and just like that it was feared the four menacing nu-metal warriors would be lost to a world with still so much left to give.Frontman Chad Grey went on to form Hellyeah and the success of that band all but extinguished any rumblings of a Mudvayne reunion before tragedy struck when Hellyeah drummer Vinnie Paul succumbed to illness and passed this world, leaving Grey with an empty musical chasm that was still far from being satiated. In 2021 the news the metal world had been sweating on broke that Mudvayne would be getting back together for select festival shows which planted the seeds of revival that grew and flourished rapidly to the stage that Mudvayne could now be recognised as a fully-fledged touring outfit once more.Having always held a soft spot for their Australian fans, Mudvayne have declared February 2024 as payback time for their patient followers on this side of the world, bringing with them another reunion success story in the once more Dez Fafara led Coal Chamber.Shortly after news of the tour broke HEAVY sat down for some quality time with Chad Grey who was more than happy to open up about the past, present and future of Mudvayne. We start by extending a warm display of gratitude on behalf of all Australian metal lovers."It's been almost two decades, so…" he laughed. "I guess it's about time."Such is the global hype generated by Mudvayne being back together the band could have pretty much asked any other international outfit to join them for this tour, so why settle on Coal Chamber?"I go way back with Miguel and Mikey," he explained. "We go back a long way. It's just gonna be rad. I mean, we just did it here in this past Summer with them - a couple of weeks ago actually, we just got home - but we had a blast with those guys, so it was kind of a no-brainer to bring them down with us. We figured that you guys would enjoy them too. Everybody is just playing really well. They did phenomenal over the Summer, so we had to bring them with us."It's been a large number of years between visits, so we press Grey on - aside from the obvious - has changed with the band since they were last here."Man, not much," he measured. "We weren't a band for ten years, and then we started out the conversation and everybody started being genuinely excited about it again. We surrounded ourselves with some new people that we're working with and doing business with, and they're exciting and fun and really helping us embrace Mudvayne and what we've done. We're just so excited to be coming to Australia. We had those three comeback festivals and then wedid the tour last year with Zombie, and we've just been sitting around. We did this most recent tour, and we heard mutterings of Australia and was so excited about it because I love Australia. There's a lot of history down there. When we heard it was solidified we were on a conference call and everyone was so excited and so jived and so pumped about coming back. We all absolutely love Australia. We love as much as how beautiful the country is, it's the people. The metal community in Australia is so dope. We're just really excited to get back down there and play for you guys again. You guys are very, very special to us. I always say if you're going to release an album somewhere, you better be going some place warm. We've released albums in Australia, so we've gotta go down and play there for you. That's the way it goes."Aside from camera footage that has emerged from their US shows, little has surfaced surrounding Mudvayne's live performances. Despite already knowing the answer to an extent we ask Grey what fans can expect from Mudvayne 2024."Intensity," he deadpanned. "It's there, and solid man. We're really feeding off each other; we're feeding off the crowd. There's an awesome energy that goes back and forth between us and our crowd, and it just builds and builds and builds and builds through the whole set. It's just amazing. It's intense, it's helpless, it's frenetic, it's crazy, it's angsty and angry and almost violent, but on the other sense it's sad, and it's helpless. But there's a lot of good feelings in there too. Metal runs the gamut of human emotion and that's always been something that we've tried to tap into. It's important to us to bring that to our live performance. That level of emotion that is very true and very real and very honest and very vulnerable."In the full interview, Chad talks about the 2010 breakup of Mudvayne and what changed ten years later to make them try again, how the first couple of shows went after being apart for so long, the progression from festival shows to touring with Rob Zombie to doing headline shows and if that was a planned progression, if Mudvayne will be touring in full makeup, the early days of the band and their formation, how far nu metal has come since Mudvayne started and if it has evolved the way he thought, what he considers Mudvayne's role in heavy metal, new music or an album and more.

DEVILDRIVER and COAL CHAMBER frontman Dez Fafara joins us on this week's Loaded Radio Podcast Dez Fafara is a renowned American vocalist and frontman, best known for his work with the California groove-metal band DEVILDRIVER and Nu-Metal stalwarts COAL CHAMBER. Born on May 12, 1966, in Santa Barbara, California, Fafara developed a passion for music from an early age. He grew up listening to various genres of music, including punk, rock, and metal, which greatly influenced his musical style. Fafara co-founded the band COAL CHAMBER in 1994, along with guitarist Miguel "Meegs" Rascón. Known for their distinct fusion of nu-metal, gothic, and alternative rock elements, COAL CHAMBER gained significant attention in the late '90s. Fafara's aggressive yet melodic vocals and captivating stage presence contributed to the band's success. They released three studio albums: "Coal Chamber" (1997), "Chamber Music" (1999), and "Dark Days" (2002) before taking an extended hiatus and returning with the 2015 LP "Rivals". In 2002, Fafara formed DEVILDRIVER, a heavy metal band with a more aggressive and intense sound. Leading the group as the vocalist and primary songwriter, Fafara steered DEVILDRIVER towards a more straightforward and brutal approach to metal. The band's debut album, "Devildriver," was released in 2003 and received critical acclaim for its ferocity and uncompromising style. DEVILDRIVER has since released several successful albums, including "The Fury of Our Maker's Hand" (2005), "Pray for Villains" (2009), and "Trust No One" (2016), solidifying their place in the metal scene. Throughout his career, Fafara has collaborated with various artists and participated in numerous side projects, including collaborations with Ozzy Osbourne, Nikki Sixx, and SOULFLY. He has also been involved in other creative ventures outside of music, such as launching his own clothing line and promoting his tattoo-inspired artwork. Dez Fafara's contributions to the metal and rock genres, both as the frontman of COAL CHAMBER and DEVILDRIVER, have made him an influential figure in the music industry. His powerful and emotive vocal style, combined with his ability to connect with audiences through raw and honest lyrics, have garnered him a dedicated fan base worldwide. Fafara's relentless passion for music and his unwavering commitment to his craft continue to drive his artistic journey, cementing his status as a prominent figure in the metal community. On this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast, Fafara discusses his upcoming autobiography, DEVILDRIVER's latest album "Dealing With Demons Vol. 2", the upcoming tour with CRADLE OF FILTH and the reuniting of COAL CHAMBER. Interview by Kris PetersWhile most of us take music on face value and, although maybe appreciating the lyrical content and life experiences that are invested in the lyrics, the vast majority of people do not - or cannot - fathom the entire depth, meaning and personal anguish behind them. For over three decades Dez Fafara has been writing songs and pouring his heart and soul into each sentence, and even word.It is a labour of love that has seen his band Devildriver embrace a loyal and growing legion of fans and one which has seen them traverse the world playing everything from festivals to their own headlining shows. In and around the time of COVID Fafara was forced to take a more in depth look into his inner self for a multitude of reasons, the main of which being the fact he almost lost his life to the virus. It was a sombre period for Fafara and his family, and one which forced him to take stock of his past, present and future and make the decision to purge his demons the only way he knew how.Through music. The result was Dealing With Demons Vol 1 which was released in 2020 it was an honest, introspective and confronting look at some of the things that Fafara has lived with and faced thoughout his entire career, tackled in a way only someone who had stared down his own demise could approach it.That album was universally hailed as a masterpiece and left the music world eagerly anticipating the second instalment which will be released on May 12 via Napalm Records.A heavier slab of metal than its predecessor, Dealing With Demons Vol II is another scathing indictment on the mechanism that Fafara has fought to subdue and control throughout his career, and as such is a deeply personal and cathartic album to himself. The great man sat down with HEAVY to talk about the concluding chapter of his self help manifesto."Feeling good, man," he smiled when asked how he was feeling about the release. "It's been sitting in the can for a while. We recorded both of these at the same time, they were meant to come out back to back in 2020 and 2021, but of course things got in the way. That being said it's incredible to be releasing this thing. You can probably attest to the fact with me, and probably agree with me that when a band tackles a double record, usually the second record is B sides and leftovers. I mean, usually - and I could name several that you would probably agree with me - we didn't want that to happen so we overwrote for this thing. Not only that but we kept them short - 36 and 38 minutes respectively - they're meant to be listened back to back, an hour and ten or so in full and it's great to get this piece of art out and actually having people hear it. This is the first time we've had feedback outside of the band. We stayed very secretive about this record. And even internally didn't pass it around to our agents and things like this. We didn't want it to get out."In the full interview, Dez talks more about the new album and what to expect, how it is heavier to Vol 1, the singles released and how they represent the album, what specific demons he dealt with over the two albums, what he learnt about himself and his music in doing so, how purging those demons will impact his future writing, what's next for Devildriver, touring plans and more.
Devildriver leader Dez Fafara called in to talk about the new Devildriver album "Dealing with Demons Part 2" (out 5/12/23) as well as the sold-out "Double Trouble" live tour with Cradle of Filth and some Coal Chamber talk as well.

We have an unfortunate societal tendency of talking about mental health in all-or-none terms. People are either “sane” or “crazy,” “normal or “abnormal,” “grounded” or “unhinged,” “accurate” or distorted.” Our predilection for this type of strict categorization is perhaps understandable on one level. Struggling with mental health issues still feels like a relatively unknown world as compared to other physical health conditions. We can’t see mental health conditions on a clear medical test like a CT Scan or MRI. Further, mental health issues are common and can have a sudden and unpredictable onset, often with devastating consequences to our functioning and well-being.And so, it would be understandable if we were terrified of developing mental health issues and did anything we could to reassure ourselves that we fall into the “sane” and “normal” category. The obvious problem with this approach is that this type of all-or-none thinking creates a stigma around mental illness. Rather than people having characteristics that are organically connected to who we are and how we live and can have pros and cons, we have qualities that are simply either “healthy” or “unhealthy.” This rigid conceptualization and associated stigma make struggling with mental health much worse, as it increases stress and interferes with people being willing to seek care for fear of being labeled. There are many ways that we can open our minds to novel approaches to our experience and challenge the stigma of mental health issues. The first is by having people who struggle with mental health share their stories. The other is by offering an alternative to the “all-or-none” thinking to our experience inherent in mental health stigma. This week on The Hardcore Humanism Podcast we spoke with Dez Fafara, founding member and vocalist of the heavy metal band DevilDriver, who is doing both.During our conversation, Fafara shares his struggles with both agoraphobia and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As Fafara himself points out, most people do not assume that a rock star would suffer from agoraphobia because the very nature of his work requires being in front of thousands of people at a time playing live shows and spending significant time with fans and press. And yet, Fafara has overcome his agoraphobia to build an impressive career as a musician. As Blabbermouth puts it, “Dez Fafara’s crew have weathered two decades with credibility intact and a sturdy catalogue backing up their ferocious reputation as a live band.”Fafara also challenges stigma by talking more generally about not only the struggles he’s facing but also the positive outcomes of his “volatility.” On the one hand, Fafara struggles with volatility as a destabilizing force when it manifests as anxiety or ADHD. And yet his volatility can also be an animating and dynamic force driving his business ventures, including managing several bands in addition to his work with DevilDriver. As an example, DevilDriver’s new album Dealing with Demons I takes on Fafara’s struggle with mental health issues. The album is resonating in part because of its raw look at mental health with Kerrang! reporting, “…this is an exorcism that’s truly compelling.” By discussing volatility as something that can be embraced as useful if harnessed properly, Fafara is also challenging our all-or-none thinking about mental health. So, check out my conversation with Dez Fafara!

HEAVY Mag chats to Dez Fafara from Devildriver about the bands return to Australia.
Dez from DevilDriver talks with BallZach about the important things in life, why outlaw country is street music, and the details on their new album Outlaws 'til the End Vol. 1!
What do you do when two great bands have albums out on the same day? You get them both on the podcast for a double co-host special edition and that's what the plan is this week with Nikki Brumen of Pagan and Dez Fafara of DevilDriver. Firstly, the heavy/black metal Pagan from Melbourne are about to release their debut album Black Wash and so far we've heard nothing but great things from the band of misfits. In the time we were first introduced to them at Big Sound 2017, they've blown up across the country playing shows all over the joint and even securing an East Coast support slot on Rise Against's Wolves Tour. Being a women in the heavy music industry can be hard, but Nikki's "no holds barred" and "no-fucks-given" attitude towards topics such as gender imbalance and bigotry will certainly result in her leaving her mark and becoming a voice/force to be reckoned with. If you haven't listened to Pagan before today, guarantee you'll follow them up following this podcast. Dez Fafara on the other hand needs no introducion, but for the uninitated, he's been a key member of the heavy music industry fronting the bands Coal Chamber (RIP) and DevilDriver who are releasing their new album Outlaws 'til The End: Vol. 1 on Friday July 6th. The approach with this new album at first raised a few eyebrows, because the band have tackled country songs like 'Copperhead Road', 'Ghost Riders in the Sky' and Willie Nelson's 'Whiskey River' but with a heavy metal twist. All the songs have been given a heavier, faster and better makeover and even feature some special guests including Johnny Cash's son John Carter Cash, his wife Ana Christina, Lamb of God's Randy Blythe and Mark Morton, Burton C. Bell, Brock Lindow and many more. The heavy metaller turned country man more than happily explains his reasons for taking on this interesting approach and the stories behind the recording process, including Johnny Cash's love for heavy metal. There's also new music from A Breach of Silence, Temtris, Daybreak and Hellions, throwbacks from Sensaii, Heaven The Axe, Anthrax and Killswitch Engage + heaps more... #WoSUATW #Pagan #NikkiBrumen #BlackMetal #HeavyMetal #DezFafara #DevilDriver #BlackWash #OutlawsTilTheEnd #OutlawsTilTheEndVol1 #LambOfGod #JohnnyCash #ABreachOfSilence #Daybreak #AustralianBands #Hardcore #Sensaii #Temtris #HeavenTheAxe #Anthrax #ScottIsn #KillswitchEngage #KSE #Hellions #Podcast #MusicPodcast #WallOfsoundAU

"Fantastic man!" gushed Dez Fafara, vocalist for Devildriver when discussing the general vibe in the camp ahead of the release of one of the more unique and ambitious releases of the year, 'Outlaws 'Til the End, Volume 1'.Taking a collection of outlaw country tunes and turning them metal was only a small part of the process, with Fafara admitting the project presented far more challenges than initially envisaged. "It was a lot of hard work to get done," he affirmed. "Let me tell you how this thing came about first of all. There was gonna be a three-year gap between records, and I'm a big stickler for getting a record out every two years. I'm the guy that bags on bands that wait four, five or six years to put out records so I was like let's put out a covers record because people seem to like our covers. It'll be easy, we'll go in, do it, and then we can go and work on what we're working on now which is gonna be spectacular - it's a double record - but this thing ended up being insanity. The logistics were insane and the money ran out halfway through... I mean, it became a labor of love. It was like, let's take two genres with four genres of singers and let's combine them like two trucks hitting head on and let's see what we come up with. What I'm appreciative of and humbled by is the artists and the guests that came in and gave their all for this thing. They knew that it had never been done before and they knew it had to be done right and they were very pleased to be part of it."In the audio interview Dez delves deeper into the making of the album, including why he felt it was an important album to make, where the initial idea came from, the process of converting outlaw country songs to metal and the role each guest played in their songs plus the correlation between the two genres of music. He also gives more details on the next Devildriver album plus the things he has learned from this album that he will translate to that release.Outlaws 'Til the End is released July 6Kris Peters

Dez Fafara puts in his second appearance on the podcast. DevilDriver's new record Trust No One will be the first in a decade with new personnel playing and writing music for the band. We talk in depth about Dez's work ethic, his view of the lineup changes, what that means for this album and the band going forward and how his attitude changes without negative influences working against him. We also get to hear David Draiman go after a fan in the audience who he claimed was texting the entire show. Although the woman says she was texting her scared daughter, and Draiman apologized, was he in the right for calling out someone for not paying attention to the show? Or is he in the dark about how audiences operate in the new world order? The time may be here to put away the phones, stop texting at shows and experience the reality of... reality.
