Hello and welcome to the latest edition of The Write Start podcast. I'm Lisa Iannucci and I have been a full-time freelance writer for more than 20 years. This podcast is where you learn how to navigate a freelance writing career and how to make more money.  Maybe you are just starting and want to understand how you can be a successful freelance writer or you want to take your current career to the next level. On The Write Start podcast, I provide advice and suggestions delivered by myself and other experienced writers. It's the right time for the write start. In case you missed it, here is the link to the essay by Nicole Brinkley that I mentioned on the show, here are 24 things publishing should change in 2024. It is well worth a read and a share with anyone you know in the publishing industry, including fellow writers. Nicole is a bookseller at Oblong Books in Rhinebeck New York, is a book reviewer, a speaker at numerous book conferences, and the co-host of the fun Novelstalgia podcast with the New York Times bestselling author Ashley Poston. In this episode, I talk about how the writing industry is hard and getting harder. Writers are facing lower wages, less rights to our work and laws that affect where and how we work. I also talk about how important it is to use as many of the tools and resources that are available to help move the needle forward on your career. For me, one of those tools is Facebook. What works for you? I also talk about how the publishing industry needs to stop focusing on about social media numbers when deciding to take on someone's book. Finally, I share tips that come from my experience as a judge in a major publishing contest. If you're looking to submit your work to a contest, these tips might help! Thank you so much for listening! Join me next time when my guest is Julie Sturgeon of Freelance Success. If you liked this episode of The Write Start, please give me a few stars and a review wherever you are listening to it. It does help me to grow this podcast and get it in front of more listeners. Hello and welcome to the latest edition of The Write Start Podcast! This is where you learn how to build a successful freelance writing career and, of course, how to make more money. I'm Lisa Iannucci and I've been a full-time freelance writer for more than 20 years. It's the right time for The Write Start. Here is the link to the essay by Nicole Brinkley that I mentioned on the show, here are 24 things publishing should change in 2024. Nicole is a bookseller at Oblong Books in Rhinebeck New York, is a book reviewer, a speaker at numerous book conferences, and the co-host of the fun Novelstalgia podcast with the New York Times bestselling author Ashley Poston. This episode's guest is Jennifer L.W. Fink, a former nurse who built a successful full-time freelance writing career after a divorce and who used her experience as a mom of four boys to write the book, Building Boys: Raising Great Guys in a World that Misunderstands Males. We talk about how Jennifer guided her career to become what she wanted it to be while raising her children. Today, she's an award-winning freelance writer; her byline has graced Parents, American Baby, Pregnancy, Boys' Life, Ladies' Home Journal, MyMidwest, Scholastic Instructor, Home Education Magazine, Proto, RN, Advance for Nurses, and other regional and national publications. She's written for a variety of websites, including iVillage, scrubsmag.com, and bestnursingdegree.com, and creates print and online content for a variety of healthcare organizations. I hope you enjoy this interview with Jennifer. Next week I'll be back with another episode on what I learned as a judge in a writing contest, how publishing companies and agents are using social media numbers to decide if your book is worth taking on and why this needs to change, and how Facebook makes me money.Follow The Write Start on Instagram and if you like what you've listened to and would like to support the work that goes into The Write Start podcast, please visit https://www.buzzsprout.com/1322467/supporters/new. In the midst of wrapping up library school and plugging away on a huge grant review project, we both managed to actually finish a book apiece: Emily: Budmo! Recipes from a Ukrainian Kitchen by Anna Voloshyna Chris: Shakespeare and Company by Sylvia Beach We are also getting ready for Sue Jackson's 11th Annual BIG BOOK SUMMER Reading Challenge! We've both picked a big book to kick off the summer. Chris chose a novel this year, one she never thought she'd read. It was published in Paris in 1922. Can you guess? Emily chose a Pulitzer Prize-winning historical best-seller about Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall. (We'll add links to the buddy reads for these books in the comments.) Emily also requests your help choosing which novel to read — she has a stack of four and can't decide — so help a girl out and vote on our Goodreads poll! [vote here] What are your reading plans this summer? As we say in the episode, it doesn't have to be a big book or anything fancy, we're just curious if you have special reading plans this summer. Let us know in the comments. Thank you for listening, and we wish you lots of HAPPY READING! Chris & Emily P.S. Main Street Moxie

Lexi's got moxie–and so do the characters in her romance and fantasy novels. Her lifelong dream of being a writer has been achieved through grit, trial and error, and a whole lot of imagination. In this episode of Main Street Moxie, Lexi explores the vicissitudes of the publishing industry, her thoughts on failure, the core story of “I love you as you are” that runs through all her work,  and her process as a discovery and patchwork writer. For Lexi, building and sustaining a community of readers is part of her craft. She loves digging deep into her characters to find a connection and discover what makes them tick. Lexi sees the romance genre as feminist and empowering, helping readers discover their self-worth and that they deserve to be cared for and loved, including pleasure. In 2012, Lexi began her journey to full-time writing after a decade of teaching college English. After her first self-published novel, Text Appeal, was released, she could focus on her writing. She's a #1 New York Times bestseller author of sizzling, emotional romance and sexy, action-packed YA fantasy. Lexi has been a Goodreads Choice nominee and recipient of the Romance Writers of America® RITA® award for Best Contemporary Romance: Long. Her novels have sold over a million copies in English and have been translated into many languages.Lexi is happiest at home in Indiana with her husband and two children, where you can find her reading copiously, hanging out with her family, and thanking her lucky stars. This year she released two new books. In July, the YA fantasy sequel These Twisted Bonds, and in October, the latest installment of her Orchid Valley series, Every Chance with You. This episode of Main Street Moxie is proudly sponsored by Oblong Books and Thorunn Designs. Carita adores words, and much of her moxie is fueled by writing them, reading them, speaking them, and encouraging others to love them as much as she does. In this episode, Carita helps Main Street Moxie launch a new literary genre called Mox Lit. She came prepared with a moxie-filled reading list to share with listeners. Carita also offers her moxie secrets and advocates for small daily habits to advance toward one's goals. She reads widely, voraciously, and enthusiastically for enrichment and escape. In this episode, she confidently responds to the age-old teen question of why reading Shakespeare is valuable. Carita is a master English instructor and class dean at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT. She's also an aspiring author of romance and young-adult fiction. While pursuing her MFA in creative writing, she wrote a romance novel and has several other works of fiction in her creative pipeline. She also created her author website, caritagardiner.com, publishes a weekly Why Wednesday blog, and shows her abiding affection and respect for grammar through GrammarLove. Carita walks her 110-pound Bernedoodle named after a hockey goalie (not from her favorite team–Go Blackhawks!); listens to podcasts on writing, science, economics, and romance novels–and moxie; plays old-lady ice hockey with the Salisbury Stingers; prolifically knits afghans and charity caps; devours romance novels and anything caramelly (not chocolatey); pushes anti-racism efforts; mentors new teachers; wears sparkly shoes; makes to-do lists; lifts small weights; walks with friends; and loves her husband, two daughters, and extended family. This episode is proudly sponsored by Oblong Books (where all the books Carita discusses are available in-store or online) and Elyse Harney Real Estate.Go to the Main Street Moxie website for the show notes to Carita's episode and her exclusive Mox Lit reading list.

Hi, hello, happy March, welcome to another chaos episode! Today, we're joined by the incredible Nicole Brinkley. Nicole is a manager at the independent bookstore, Oblong Books, located in Rhinebeck, NY. We're picking her brain about all things indie bookstores and her amazing podcast, Misshelved, where she connects booksellers with authors for a conversation. BUT FIRST: before this interview, Nicole actually sent us a brief questionnaire about our reading tastes. She then used that info to choose three 2022 new releases for each of us (including a couple of bonus “buddy read” picks!) This was SO MUCH fun, and Nicole really nailed all her picks for each of us. Hope you're ready to add 12 news books to your TBR… We have links to Nicole and her store below, along with a list of all the incredible sounding books she mentioned on this episode. Thank you for listening, we love you! Grab your BATC merch (including the coveted SWEATSHIRT) here: https://www.booksandthecitypod.com/merch.
