Think you're eating healthy with your daily green smoothie and salad? What if the foods you believe are nourishing you are actually working against your body's natural design? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I sit down with Dr. Josh Axe to discuss why many "superfood" staples might be sabotaging your health – especially for women with thyroid issues. We also discuss the Biblio diet, explore why organ meats are nature's ultimate multivitamins, and share natural alternatives to antidepressants that actually address root causes. Dr. Josh Axe is a doctor of natural medicine, clinical nutritionist, and author of multiple bestselling books including his newest one "The Biblio Diet." He's helped thousands reverse chronic conditions through personalized nutrition and runs The Health Institute, a virtual functional medicine practice. His approach combines ancient healing wisdom with modern science to address the root causes of disease. Something a little different this episode as I invite you to head down the rabbit hole with me into the world of books about books. Accompanying us into this particular wonderland is Joseph Dance, host of the Curious Readers podcast. From meta-fictional narratives to booksellers with shadowy agendas, we're flagging up some of our favourites both for behind-the-scenes insights into the literary world, and for the way they allow us to discover yet more books we might want to read. From Alberto Manguel's library of 35,000 titles, to Alejandro Zambra's essay collection On Not Reading, we're considering a broad spectrum of perspectives that help us reflect on and enrich our reading lives. And so listen in to hear what happens when two book podcasters get together to talk about their favourite topic. In this episode, Dr. Motley sits down with Jordan Rubin—author, health expert, and founder of the Biblio Diet—to talk about how his personal health crisis led him to explore healing through biblical wisdom. Jordan shares how faith, mindset, and emotional well-being all play a vital role in physical health, and what happened when he started following a biblical diet. The two also dive into the future of farming, regenerative agriculture, and why true health must support the body, mind, and spirit. I first came across Andrés Mario Zervigón's (Cuban) name while researching a magazine that filled me with awe the first time I saw it. AIZ, the Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung (Workers Illustrated Magazine) is an illustrated, mass circulation German periodical that was published in Berlin during the 1920s and 1930s (in Prague after 1933). It contains some of the most emotionally charged imagery I've ever seen. The best work was by John Heartfield. Zervigón is professor of the history of photography at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He obtained his PhD from Harvard University in 2000 and concentrates his scholarship “on the interaction between photographs, film, and fine art." His first book, John Heartfield and the Agitated Image: Photography, Persuasion, and the Rise of Avant-Garde Photomontage (University of Chicago Press, 2012), proposes that “photography's sudden ubiquity in illustrated magazines, postcards, and posters produced an unsettling transformation of visual culture that artists felt compelled to address.” Zervigón's work, says the Rutger's website, “generally focuses upon moments in history when these media [film, photography, fine art] prove inadequate to their presumed task of representing the visual.” We start our conversation by unpacking this passage, and then move on to a short history of illustrated, mass circulation magazines, (including VU magazine), then to the life of John Heartfield, and finally to AIZ. Welcome to Episode 214! This episode contains a lot of biblio adventuring. Emily is in Traverse City, Michigan, helping her daughter, getting to know her new granddaughter, and discovering the many excellent Little Free Libraries in the area. She also shopped at Horizon Books and has been spending time at the Traverse City Library. Meanwhile, back in New England, Chris and “Colleen from Chicago” hit the road for a four-day Biblio Adventure Extravaganza that included Melville's Arrowhead, Wharton's The Mount, Emily Dickinson's family homes, The Homestead and The Evergreens, Amherst Books, and The Yiddish Book Center. The former bookstore coworkers capped it off with the annual Moby Dick marathon aboard the Charles W. Morgan at Mystic Seaport Museum. Oh, and she forgot to mention that they also went to the Odyssey Bookstore at Mount Holyoke. Phew, what a blast! We managed to finish a few books, too: Emily loved THE SNOW CHILD by Eowyn Ivey and appreciated its cold Alaska setting while reading in the heat of Michigan's summer. She listened to the audiobook version of Ann Napolitano's first novel, WITHIN ARM'S REACH, which features six narrators, and then two Audible Original short stories by Alice Hoffman, "The Bookstore Sisters" and "The Bookstore Wedding.” Chris read MOBY DICK by Herman Melville (that's twice this year) and a novelization about his relationship with Nathaniel Hawthorne, THE WHALE: A Love Story by Mark Beauregard. She also read her first book club selection from Book Browse, THE ROSE ARBOR, by Rhys Bowen. Happy Listening!

Topics covered include: observing and interviewing politicians; reading and remembering history; putting events into context; pre-revolutionary Paris; pedagogical magazine writing; helping people; recited formulas, thrown slogans, and knowing you're being lied to; the difficulty politicians experience making a difference; discussing issues in their full complexities; “the wall of words,” “the significant trifle,” including yourself and analysis in your narratives; paying for Substack subscriptions because you want to comment; filling the ‘weekend supplement' niche; understanding each other as neighbours; and the secret to a successful marriage.

I kept seeing the cover everywhere. On Facebook, Instagram, on Facebook again. The cover grabbed me. The obvious suspense/thriller feel got me, too. However, I missed one obvious thing until I was chatting with Tracie Peterson one day--it was written by Kimberley Woodhouse. *insert scratched record here* Call me brain frozen, but I didn't know she wrote suspense! But she did--she started off in suspense, and I like to say she's returned to her roots with her latest release, 26 Below. Listen in to see how this happened! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you! What Makes Me Think a Cyber Attack Sounds Like a Good Read? Let's start with Alaska. Land of ice, snow, and not temperatures in the teens--the HUNDRED and teens, that is. Then add in the ticking weather bomb of dropping temperatures and it sounds even better. Right? Finally, stir in a quirky native woman who keeps foretelling doom and gloom, and what doesn't sound good??? And if that all didn't cut it, there's that little thing called faith. Kimberley Woodhouse talked about the faith she wove into her story, and I don't know about you, but those are my favorite sorts of books. So there's that. We also chatted about her backlist (hard to get those original suspense novels, but they might be on eBay or Biblio.com) and about her upcoming publishing schedule. Two suspense and three historicals a year for the next few years. YAY!!! *does happy dance* Like me, Kimberley Woodhouse doesn't just have a to-be-read pile. She has a whole heaping gob of shelves stuffed with them. I love when I'm not alone. I feel her pain. Feel it. We'll never read all the books we want to--never write them all, either. But we'll have rich lives filled with story while we're here on earth, and that's beautiful. God is good. 26 Below by Kimberley Woodhouse "A thrill ride. . . as current as today's front-page news!" --Colleen Coble, USA Today best-selling author In her new role as Emergency Operations Center director for Fairbanks, Alaska, Darcie Phillips prevents disasters. But none of her training can prepare her for the terror that's coming. As a cybersecurity specialist, Jason Myers is determined to ferret out any threats to the town he now calls home--and that includes his reckless brother and his ecoterrorist friends. When an old woman's wild prediction--widespread destruction as soon as the Fairbanks temperature falls to 26 below--hits national headlines, neither Darcie nor Jason sees a real risk to anything but tourism. Then the bodies start dropping. Darcie is relying on her experience and intelligence to stop a killer; Jason is relying on God to guide the way. They'll have to work together to find the truth and prevent their Alaskan town from becoming a city of nightmares. The first in a thrilling new suspense series from best-selling author Kimberley Woodhouse, 26 Below will delight fans of Lynnette Eason, Irene Hannon, and Lynn Blackburn. Welcome to Episode 182! There is a lot of Biblio Adventure recapping in this episode, from author events (Mary Beth Keane at R.J. Julia) to movies (two book adaptations starring Kathy Bates), to bookstore visits in Vermont (Northshire and Monroe Street Books) and New York (Rogers Book Barn and Oblong Books). In the midst of wrapping up library school and plugging away on a huge grant review project, we both managed to actually finish a book apiece: Emily: Budmo! Recipes from a Ukrainian Kitchen by Anna Voloshyna Chris: Shakespeare and Company by Sylvia Beach We are also getting ready for Sue Jackson's 11th Annual BIG BOOK SUMMER Reading Challenge! We've both picked a big book to kick off the summer. Chris chose a novel this year, one she never thought she'd read. It was published in Paris in 1922. Can you guess? Emily chose a Pulitzer Prize-winning historical best-seller about Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall. (We'll add links to the buddy reads for these books in the comments.) Emily also requests your help choosing which novel to read — she has a stack of four and can't decide — so help a girl out and vote on our Goodreads poll! [vote here] What are your reading plans this summer? As we say in the episode, it doesn't have to be a big book or anything fancy, we're just curious if you have special reading plans this summer. Let us know in the comments. Thank you for listening, and we wish you lots of HAPPY READING! Chris & Emily P.S. Happy full moon! Hard to believe we are halfway through our fifth year of this epic pilgrimage. Are you up for going to the Bronx to hang out on a book bus? What!? Well, a few months ago I got an email from 3 Booker Karen where she said “Hi Neil. I love this! Have you seen it?” The this was this video, going viral, about a woman in the Bronx trying to get funding to start up a bookstore on wheels. I couldn't believe that the 1.6 million residents of Manhattan have 82 bookstores whereas the 1.4 million residents of the Bronx had ... one. That's it! One bookstore. Well, Latanya grew up in the Bronx and decided to do something about that. So she founded Bronx Bound Books -- a "bookstore that comes to you." Today we're going to hang out with her and Jerry, who's the proud driver of this bus, that serves underserved communities across New York. We'll be hanging out in the storage locker parking lot of the (freshly painted!) bus with the 5 train ripping over the tracks behind us. We'll learn how Latanya and Jerry spend their days driving around, picking up books, selling books, visiting schools, visiting shelters, and visiting community centers, to spread the good word -- or good words, really. And we talk about our mutual love of reading, the idea of bringing books to book deserts around the world, and of course, Latanya and Jerry's most formative books. This is a fun and immersive conversation you won't soon forget. Let's flip the page into Chapter 107 now… What You'll Learn: What was the motivation to start a bookstore on wheels? What are the logistics to starting a mobile bookstore? How do kids react to a bookstore on wheels? Why is community essential to any small start-up? How do you make time for reading? How are bookstores community hubs? You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.3books.co/chapters/107 Leave us a voicemail.
