At the time of this recording, my mouth was full of snap peas. Katie Dalebout the host of Let it Out with Katie Dalebout, the author of Let it Out: A Journey Through Journaling and the creator of the Let It Outttt platform and self-growth KITS. Katie Horwitch is a writer, speaker and founder of the Women Against Negative Talk platform & podcast. She’s also a spin instructor extraordinaire and her audio workouts on Aaptiv are phenomenal. You heard her before in episode 122 and she’s quarantined in my beloved NYC. Her mouth was full of pickles! Phoebe Lapine is a cookbook author, chef, and food blogger at FeedMePhoebe.com. She’s written two books, In the Small Kitchen and The Wellness Project, and she hosts the SIBO Made Simple Podcast (+ is writing a third book by the same name)! Press play to hear: Introverts vs. extroverts vs. ambiverts (and how to know the difference) The least horrible parts of being quarantine right now Connection as self care How we’re loosely managing time these days (Horwitch’s protocol chunking schedule is something to hear!) How we’re cooking/eating/plant-partying right now! This quarantine being a masterclass for what we really most need to learn and heal about ourselves that we’ve been procrastinating on… How cooking your friend’s recipes (AHEM: MINE!) can help you feel closer to them right now The idea of mindful take out & delivery and how quarantine can help us really learn to feed ourselves. How pre-quarantine traveling helped Dalebout learn to nourish again Horwitch’s beautiful metaphor about letting our paint dry as we *wait* to come out of this My best friend’s advice and comfort about my book launch. And why shiny ain’t always smarty. Horwitch’s interesting perspective on the fitness IG live explosion and how “Fitness advice is life advice.” And lots more! Jeffrey's premise: "One factor that helps high-achieving creatives and fulfilled entrepreneurs face daily challenges is that they have some sense of purpose that helps remind them why they're doing what they're doing every day."You are what you pay attention to, and if your willpower, focus and time are spent trying to control your body image, for example, that quite simply distracts you from becoming who you want to be. Too many young women lose their voices—and ultimately their purpose and passion—in the pursuit of perfection. And if you are busy with the ‘part-time job’ of an eating disorder, it is impossible to achieve your potential or uncover your unique gift to the world. Today on the Quest Series Roundtable, Jeffrey is joined by podcaster, blogger and author Katie Dalebout and executive coach, speaker and author Caroline Adams Miller to discuss some of the reasons why we tend to lose our purpose as young adults. Katie and Caroline both share their struggles with body image and eating disorders, explaining how they found their way back to health and discovered joy and meaning in giving back. They speak to the value of journaling when it comes to self-awareness, making meaning of our lives, and healing, and offer their best advice around taking care of yourself in the pursuit of a purposeful life. Key Takeaways [3:05] Katie’s take on her young genius Only child, raised on ‘adult farm’ Propensity for performing Knew wanted life to be big [8:24] Caroline’s childhood Girl who wanted to be loved School as happy place (solace in thinking, reading and writing) Sorrow gave empathy, desire to give back [11:50] Why we lose our purpose as young adults Girls lose their voices Must get angry enough to ‘throw off chains’ Lose purpose, passion [15:25] How Katie deals with the ‘mean girls’ in her mind Use as tool for self-awareness [19:18] The common issues Katie sees among young women Body image/diet culture Risk aversion (i.e.: entrepreneurship) Impact of social media (distraction, comparison) [31:02] Katie’s struggle with eating disorders Anorexia at end of college Received treatment, developed orthorexia Obsessed with control, miss out on life [38:02] Caroline’s fight against bulimia Thought next achievement would eliminate sadness Bulimia as ‘part-time job’ while studying at Harvard Started recovery in 1984 (just after marriage) Found joy in giving back, sharing hope [45:20] The value of journaling Allows for honesty, self-awareness (first step to change) Opportunity to make meaning of lives Positive intervention, part of healing process Ask good questions to get good response Eventually have to ‘feel the feelings’ [57:17] Caroline and Katie’s advice around self-care Purposeful life isn’t always easy Seek out your unique gifts Surround yourself with supportive people Be gentle with yourself Do things that make you feel good Out your shame, fear Connect with Katie & Caroline Katie’s Website Katie’s Podcast Caroline’s Website Caroline’s Blog Resources Let it Out: A Journey Through Journaling by Katie Dalebout Generation Startup Film Getting Grit: The Evidence-Based Approach to Cultivating Passion, Perseverance, and Purpose by Caroline Adams Miller My Name is Caroline by Caroline Adams Miller Caroline on The Good Life Project Activate Leadership: Aspen Truths to Empower Millennial Leaders by Jon Mertz Larissa Rainey Study: ‘The Search for Purpose in Life’ A special thanks to the early supporters of the Tracking Wonder Podcast. Today’s guest is a master at journaling. Sure you might’ve journaled in high school and quit after one day of “Dear Diary...see you tomorrow!”, but my friend and fellow podcast host Katie Dalebout is bringing journaling back! Katie recently came out with her first book, Let it Out: A Journey Through Journaling, where she published 55 journaling exercises covering everything from clearing clutter (yes please!) to feeling more grounded to cultivating abundance to moving beyond fear (eff fear, yo)! And in this episode she spills the beans about how journaling has led her to mega happiness, self-acceptance and ultimately, authentic success. You’ll hear: The difference between writing in a diary vs. writing in a journal. WHY journaling is seriously so effective. How her favorite writing exercise relates to Ted from HIMYM! 6 books, besides her own, that she’s been wildly inspired by. The amazing journaling exercise that can help you quit comparing yourself to peeps and crying about it! Well, I don't even know where to start with this episode. I guess I could start by explaining how deeply my girl crush for this week's guest runs. Katie Dalebout is an author, podcast host, beautiful human, and claims she's not an expert at anything but that she's simply an enthusiast of a bunch of things --- so, I suppose you can imagine it's a little tricky to pinpoint who she is in just a few words. As I mention to Katie in this episode, she may not know it but I've spent at least 50 hours at her side, going on walks and cooking as she interviews dozens of talented and inspiring women through my headphones. I genuinely had a hard time even asking her the right questions for those of you who've never heard of her! I definitely encourage you subscribe and take a listen to her podcast. I was just listening to her #117th episode, so you have a ton of material to dive into! This year, she published her first book Let it Out: A Journey Through Journaling which is an amazing tool she's created to simplify and demystify the ominous practice of journaling, making its well-touted ability to impact your self-growth much easier. I'm no mega-journaler, so this in an excellent opportunity for me to incorporate some serious shifts in my nightly practice. Hell, I might even take her word for it and start different journals for different topics! Who knows. I'm not going to say too much on here, because I don't really like to take up too much of your time you could be spending listening to our conversation, but I will inform you that this is the longest podcast episode I've done so far. I'm trying to keep things within an hour, but this episode was just too delicious and packed with incredible things to edit anything out. You just get it all. I also had a shit-load of questions prepared for Katie, but I didn't really use them. This was an unscripted piece of magic that really left me feeling wickedly refreshed. We even had a few moments of the record that really shook things up for me. She's just so breathtakingly inspiring and understanding of a few not-so-awesome things I've been dealing with that I don't share with the world-wide-web.
Katie is also the author of, Let it Out: A Journey Through Journaling. Walking down this memory lane mini-episode, Katie gets personal about releasing all her feelings in writing... with some unique analogies on the importance of "letting it out". Enjoy!
