Radio Luxembourg was a pioneering and hugely popular radio station that broadcasted to millions of people around Europe, on 208 Medium wave, from right here in Luxembourg, from 1933 until 1992. One of the famous DJs on the station in the 1950s-70s was Barry Alldis and today Tom was joined on the Breakfast Show by his daughter Janet Alldis who has recently released a song in tribute to her father. Barry Alldis moved to Luxembourg in 1956 to begin working at Radio Luxembourg, the first commercial radio station in Europe. For 10 years he worked as the chief announcer on the station and built up a huge following around Europe for his groundbreaking radio shows that were often the first place that you could hear new hit records being played. In the 1960s Alldis moved to London and worked as a presenter at the BBC but in the 1970s he returned to Luxembourg with his family and presented the Sunday evening Top 20 show on Radio Luxembourg until his death in 1982. Janet Alldis has early memories of hearing her dad's voice coming out of a strange little box in the living room and thinking he was inside, little did she know that she was listening to him along with millions of other people around Europe. As a tribute to her father, Janet has produced a song called 'Under the Covers' - a reference to how many teenagers in the 1950s would tune in to Radio Luxembourg from their beds, hiding under the covers to avoid detection by their parents. The song which was produced with Fred Cannon and features John Carr is currently number 16 in the Heritage Chart in the UK and listeners can vote for it at www.heritagechart.co.uk

Throughout Australia, people want our cities to be more affordable, to have more vibrant social and green spaces, and to be better environmentally suited. And yet our sprawling cities typically fail to meet these goals – often because they have been designed for the convenience of real estate developers, and exclude life sustaining processes and community from them. Even though the ways we work and live have shifted, and we've made leaps and bounds in technology, transport, architecture, and infrastructure, our blueprint for a city has not changed since the Second World War. Given our ability to create cities that are socially vibrant, economical, and in harmony with the land and climate of Australia, isn't it about time we reimagined our cities to reflect the lifestyles we want for the future?  John CarrJohn Carr is an urban and legal geographer whose work focuses on the intersections of urban form, law, planning, and human and non-human environments. His research seeks to address how knowledge from across disciplinary boundaries can be mobilised to make human-built environments more environmentally and socially regenerative. Some people imagine more robots and technology, but what about some changes that you may not see coming? In this episode, I talk with Dr. John Carr about his take on what the future of our industry will look like and what areas of swine production we need to further emphasize. Some of his answers may surprise you… "We need to revisit feed. It's not about how we convert the best corn on the planet, but rather the worst corn on the planet." - Dr. John Carr

Episode 222: On Sunday, November 12,1988 beloved 36-year-old high school teacher named Byron Carr was found by his family dead in the bedroom of his home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He'd been strangled to death and stabbed. Byron's wallet had been stolen, and ominously on his wall, written in pen, were the words “I will kill again.” Investigators revealed that Byron was a closeted gay man, and had been involved in a consensual sexual encounter with an as yet unidentified man prior to his death. It is presumed that it was this man who killed Byron. No one has ever been brought to justice in Byron's death.

John Carr, OBE, is a globally recognized expert on child safety; he is working towards implementing age verification legislation in the UK aimed at protecting children from exposure to online pornography. My friend Alexander is skeptical that age verification for pornography websites can really be effective. In this episode, Alexander raises his concerns and tough questions and John Carr responds. Questions discussed include: With millions of porn websites currently existing and hundreds more popping up every day, how can governments hope to monitor all these sites for compliance? Is it a valid argument to say that since age verification works for online gambling sites, it can work for porn sites? What would have the biggest impact: requiring porn websites to age verify users, or requiring search engines to age-gate pornographic content? A Jewish boy kills a Nazi by the Polish ghetto. He must escape the Third Reich at all costs. The captivating true story of one boy's flight across Europe to escape the Nazis. A tale of extraordinary courage, incredible adventure and the relentless pursuit of life in the face of impossible challenges. In early 1940 Chaim Herzsman was locked in to the Lódz Ghetto in Poland. Hungry, fearless and determined, he goes on scavenging missions outside the wire limits, until he is forced to kill a Nazi guard. That moment changes the course of his life and sets him on an unbelievable adventure across enemy lines. Chaim avoids grenades and rifle fire on the Russian border, shelters with a German family in the Rhineland, falls in love in occupied France, is captured on a mountain pass in Spain, gets interrogated as a potential Nazi spy in Britain and eventually fights for everything he believes in as part of the British Army. He protects his life by posing as an Aryan boy with a crucifix around his neck and fights for his life through terrible and astonishing circumstances. Escape from the Ghetto is about a normal boy who faced extermination by the Nazis in the ghetto or a Nazi deathcamp and the extraordinary life he led in avoiding that fate. It's a bittersweet story about epic hope, beauty amidst horror and the triumph of the human spirit. John Carr is Henry Carr's eldest son, and in Escape from the Ghetto he has re-created his father's incredible adventure through recordings and transcribed conversations in later life. For fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Saboteur of Auschwitz and The Volunteer, this is the incredible true story of escape from the Nazis during World War II.
