Be Killing Sin Jason Gingerich Download Mark 9:42-50
John Owen famously said, “Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you.” The war with sin connects us with all people of all times, because the sin problem is timeless and universal. None of our technological advances have fixed our sinful nature, guilty conscience, or separation from God. What makes Romans relevant today is that it speaks to this seemingly impossible issue. The key to killing sin lies in answering this question: Who is King of your life?Take-Home Question: I cannot kill sin without a new King. The War Against Sin (12-13)The War: Between God and SinThe Battleground: Your BodyThe OptionsPresent your members to sin as weapons of unrighteousnessPresent your members to God as weapons of righteousnessThe Question: Who is King?God's Victory Over Sin (14)Living in God's Victory Over Sin Reject sin's reign by treasuring God (12).Resist the body's sinful desires (12).Run toward righteousness (13).Remember whose you are (14).

What kills sin? In this episode of Light + Truth, John Piper shows from Romans 8:13 that the Spirit flows with power as the word is heard and heeded.
MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN BY BRINGING BACK THE CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE OF EARLY AMERICA: GEORGE WHITEFIELD
NEGLECT OF CHRIST, THE KILLING SIN.NOTE:GEORGE WHITEFIELD IS A LITTLE UNCLEAR IN THIS MESSAGE WHAT HAPPENS TO INFANTS IN WOMB OR OUTSIDE, BUT IT IS VERY CLEAR TO US AS JOHN Q. PUNLIC OF AMERICA: ALL PARENTS CAN HAVE HOPE THAT THEIR BABY WENT TO HEAVEN SINCE NONE OF US KNOW WHETHER OUR BABY IS ONE OF THE ELECT, BUT WE CAN BE ASSURED THAT EVERY BABY THAT IS OF THE ELECT WILL INDEED BE SAVED FOR JESUS' FATHER ‘S WILL IS , THAT JESUS IS TO LOSE NONE THAT WERE GIVEN TO HIM BY HIS FATHER BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD FROM CONCEPTION TO WHATEVER AGE THEY MIGHT LIVE TO BE, EVEN A DEATHBED CONVERSION LIKE THE THIEF ON THE CROSS AN IN THE WOMB CONVERSION LIKE JOHN THE BAPTIST. IT IS THAT SIMPLE!!!EXCERPTS FROM GEORGE WHITEFIELDS'S SERMON. “And ye will not come to me, that ye may have life.”John v. 40.“THE great apostle of the Gentiles, after he had set before the Hebrews thegreat cloud of witnesses of Old Testament believers, exhorts them to lookhigher, even to Jesus, the common Saviour, and that not transiently, butearnestly and constantly, in his mediatorial character of humiliation, asenduring unheard-of, unparalleled contradiction of sinners against himself;“Lest (says he) ye be weary, and faint in your minds.” If we had not suchan example set before us, and brought to us by the Holy Ghost in a suffering hour, we should never hold out to the end. This was not the contradictionof the openly profane and scandalous, those that were without, so much asfrom those that were within the pale of the church, even those to whomwere committed the lively oracles of God, who had not only the very Biblein their own hands, but were set apart to explain it to others. That the wordsof our text were spoken to them, appears from the preceding verse, in whichhe bids them“Search the scriptures;” as a person digs for a mine, orsearches from some hidden treasure. The word Bible, or book, which I havein my hand, is well applied to the holy scriptures, because it is the book ofGod, written by him, that is, by his order, and by those who were inspiredby him for that end; and yet, of all writings in the world, these are mostneglected! God has condescended to become an author, and yet people willnot read his writings. There are very few that ever gave this book of God,the grand charter of salvation, one fair reading through: though we professto have assented to the truth of scripture, as our Lord said, “In them wethink we have eternal life,” yet most read them as they would aproclamation, a romance, a play, or novels, that help only to bring them tothe devil, but choose not to read God's book, which is to be our guide toglory; “they are they (says Christ) which testify of me.” Lord God, convertand change our heartsWhen I talk of lovingthe world, I mean an inordinate love. I may live in the world, and not liveupon it. My heart may be towards God: the love of the world is to berenounced, and therefore they will not come to Jesus Christ, they think, tillthey are going out of the world. If you are one of those who hate Christ, why,you are the man that will not come to him. Why, say you, does anybody hateChrist? Pray hold your tongue, for fear of discovering your ignorance. O, sayyou, God forbid I should hate him. But, my dear soul, learn from this timeforward, that every one of us by nature hates Jesus Christ: we sent thismessage to him; we will not have this man to reign over us; we hate himbecause he is despised, we hate him because of the appearance of the peoplethat are his followers, we hate him because of the narrowness of the way weare to pass in to him, because we must part with our lusts; we hate him becausewe must be nonconformists. I hate that rag of the whore of Babylon, O thatform of prayer, O all that stuff, I thank God I was born a Dissenter. 1 love tobe a Puritan. I do not love rites and ceremonies, no, not in the church; and yet…
Why does sheer resolve fail against temptation? In this episode of Light + Truth, John Piper turns to Romans 8:13 to show how the Spirit uses promises to defeat sin.
The forbidden longings of lust are a very real and present danger. Although Christians may be diligent in being on the lookout for lust, we often find it has passed through our defenses and is present in our hearts. Lust may be subtle in its entrance, and then strong in its growth and pursuits. Such longings in our hearts are part of the three that the Apostle John lists in 1 John 2 above. Don't miss John's words that importantly reveal to us that these lusts are both in the world and of the world. Notice that all three of these longings have to do with three predominant inclinations of the depraved nature. All three of them demonstrate personal gratification, and not a heart of love and obedience to God. Yet, all praise be to our God for the truth that though the natural man is in bondage to his lusts (Rom. 3:10–18), when the Lord saves us, because of our union with Christ, we are delivered from the dominion of them (Rom. 6:12-14).
Anger can be a volatile emotion in many people, especially after an offense. It can explode quickly like a firecracker, or a short-fused bomb. The blast radius can have deadly focus or it can be tragically broad. Once it's unleashed, the damage can be great and the path to healing and restoration even greater. Unleashed, sinful anger can often thrive in pride. It can also quickly lead the angry person down the path of regret. For these reasons and many others, sinful anger needs to be promptly and thoroughly dealt with and put to death in both heart and life.
As we examine Jesus' exposition of the Law in His Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, we consider the great need to mortify our flesh, to kill sin within us, as we seek to be obedient to Christ's commands for us to walk in holiness and purity before Him and with one another. One of the sins that we need to be serious about putting to death is the sin of pride. It's one of the seven sins Solomon lists in Proverbs 6:17. We know well that God hates sin. Solomon teaches us that pride is an abomination to our Lord. With the prevalent, pervasive, and multi-layered presence that pride often has within us, it's all too true that killing it in our own hearts is very difficult. Why is this true? Click and listen...
When temptations come, arm yourself with this thought: When my Lord suffered and died to free me from sin, I died to sin!

Know your Enemy: Identifying the Source of Sin led by Don Prow We know many actions that are sinful, but do we know sin's source? Like doing a river cleanup only to find that a trash company is actively dumping their waste in the river, we may be wasting our efforts and only left frustrated at the continued struggle. How can we clean the river, stop it at the source. How can we stop choosing sin? Knowing our enemy.
When some fear or craving threatens to lead us into sin, we are to take the sword of the Spirit and kill it.
Killing Sin Part 1 | Colossians 2 by Christ Covenant
As we continue to recover from the winter storm that affected northeast Mississippi, we're grateful for your patience and prayers. We didn't want to leave you without encouragement this week, so we're returning to the second episode in our series on John Owen's Mortification of Sin, originally published on October 20, 2022. We trust the Lord will use it again to strengthen and steady your walk. Robert Murray M'Cheyne described the human heart as gunpowder and temptation as a spark that will ignite the heart in sin. The most careful practice we can have is to keep our hearts damp by gazing upon Christ. In this week's episode, John Snyder and Jeremy Walker share how Owen encourages us to keep our hearts damp by the dual command to watch and pray. What must we watch for? How must we pray? John and Jeremy share some of the most practical help from Owen in this week's episode. You may have heard about the significant ice storm that has swept through northeast Mississippi. Like many in our area, the Media Gratiae team has been affected, and the disruption has made it difficult for us to release a new episode this week. Still, we didn't want to leave you without encouragement. So this week we're returning to one of our most well-received series, originally published on October 13, 2022, featuring a conversation between Dr. John Snyder and Jeremy Walker on John Owen's Mortification of Sin. Our prayer is that the Lord would use these conversations to strengthen your faith and stir your hearts toward holiness, even in a week marked by disruption. We at The Whole Counsel love Puritans. We have benefited so much from their sermons, prayers, and books, it is our delight to discuss them and hopefully whet your appetite to read their words. In this new series of podcasts, Dr. John Snyder is going to walk through two books from the Puritan, John Owen, with our longtime friend Jeremy Walker. In this first episode, Jeremy and John are discussing Owen's, “On Temptation” and they discuss how to define, identify, and deal with temptation and testing. What are the differences and how should we approach them differently? Summary Romans 8:12–13 sits at the center of Paul's teaching on life in the Spirit, and in this sermon Dr. Michael Easley draws attention to the decisive shift that takes place when a person trusts Christ. Salvation is not merely forgiveness—it's a complete reorientation of our spiritual starting point. When the Spirit of God takes up residence in a believer, everything changes. We are no longer obligated to obey the flesh, no longer bound to its impulses, and no longer defined by its demands. Dr. Easley explains that many Christians continue living as though the flesh still holds authority, when Scripture says the opposite. The flesh is not neutral; it is hostile to God and must be confronted. Paul calls believers to put sin to death, but he also makes clear that this cannot be accomplished through willpower or personal resolve. It is the Spirit who enables us to kill the deeds of the body and to live in the freedom God intends. This passage invites believers to acknowledge sin honestly, take responsibility for their choices, and actively depend on the Spirit for transformation. Life in Christ begins—and continues—with the power of the Spirit making us alive, responsive, and obedient to God. Takeaways Trusting Christ moves your point of departure from the flesh to the indwelling Spirit. The believer does not have to follow the flesh—its pull is a lie, not an obligation. Only the Holy Spirit empowers us to put sin to death; the flesh cannot improve. Sin behaves like bamboo—relentless and invasive—requiring continual Spirit-empowered resistance. To mortify sin, believers must first acknowledge its true evil without minimizing or excusing it. Life in the Spirit is not passive; it is a daily, intentional dependence on the One who empowers obedience. To read the book of Romans, click here. Click here for other Michael Easley Sermons.
Obedience to God's commands does not save us from our sin but is proof that we have been saved from sin through our faith in Christ and that we seek to turn from sin and obey Him as expressions of love for God and neighbor.

How can you conquer what's defeating you? In this powerful episode, recorded live at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Dallas, host Tina Yeager sits down with Karl Clauson—host of Moody Radio's "Karl and Crew Mornings," pastor of vision and leadership at 180Chicago, and an Iditarod Trail sled dog race finisher. Together, they dive deep into the topic of “Conquering What Is Defeating You.” Karl opens up about his own struggles with addiction, the true meaning of sin, and how shame and self-justification can keep us trapped in destructive cycles. The conversation unpacks practical, faith-based strategies for breaking free from the things that hold us back—including Karl's three-step approach to lasting spiritual victory: embracing humility, abiding in Christ, and learning to depend daily on the Holy Spirit. If you've ever felt stuck, burdened by guilt, or wondered how to break the cycle of defeat, this episode will offer you hope, encouragement, and actionable wisdom for your journey. Tune in for an honest, grace-filled discussion aimed at helping you experience the true freedom and flourishing that comes from walking closely with God. Key Takeaways from the Conversation: 1. Identify What's in the Shadows Before we can overcome what's weighing us down, we need to identify it. Karl reminded us that confronting the hidden challenges in our lives requires courage and honesty. As he put it, “The issue of killing sin, it's not commonly talked about, but it's a hallmark of really living in discipleship with Christ.” 2. Understand What “Missing the Mark” Really Means Karl shared the true meaning of “sin” as missing the bullseye—not a shameful label, but a recognition of imperfection. This compassionate view frames repentance as an invitation to mercy, not condemnation. 3. Don't Fall for Self-Justification It's easy to compare ourselves to others and rationalize our struggles, but the focus should be on following Jesus and letting Him guide each individual journey. 4. Surrender to God's Power Karl vulnerably opened up about his own battles with addiction and explained that, “The older I get, the more…aware I am both of my own sin and of the loving God who wants to liberate us.” Freedom starts when we let God do what we cannot do ourselves. 5. Three-Step Symphony to Freedom Karl describes the journey to victory like movements in a symphony: Humility: The root virtue of all others. True humility means focusing more on God's greatness than our own shortcomings. Abiding in Christ: Staying close to Jesus—“the Vine”—so that His life flows through us and produces fruit, rather than striving to manufacture change on our own. Yielding to the Holy Spirit: Raising our “sails” so God's Spirit can empower, guide, and remind us of truth moment by moment. 6. It's Not About Willpower Alone One of the most powerful reminders—“You can't do it. You can't conquer what's defeating you. But God can.” Want to Dive Deeper? Today, on Karl and Crew, we continued with our weekly theme of “Killing Sin” with a discussion about how to partner with God in daily struggles, such as reviving our prayer life and decluttering. Dr. Bill (William) Thrasher joined us to discuss how to intentionally involve God in eradicating sin from our lives through prayer in the Spirit. Dr. Thrasher has served on the Moody Bible Institute faculty since 1980 and is currently the Lead Professor in the Master’s Program in Spiritual Formation and Discipleship. He is also a frequent speaker and has authored several books, including “How to Resurrect a Dead Prayer Life.” We then had Kathi Lipp join us to discuss how to break through the shame of living in clutter with God. Today, on Karl and Crew, we dove deeper into our weekly theme of “Killing Sin” by discussing the importance of eradicating sin. We were all born into sin, so it’s the nature of our flesh to sin, but we aren’t bound to it because Jesus Christ delivered us from it. As followers of Christ, we are to cast down and kill the sin, which is precisely what God wants us to do. We turned to Proverbs 6:16-19, where we see how God feels about sin. We then examined Romans 12:1-2, where Paul instructs us to present our bodies as holy to God and not to be conformed to the world. Are you killing the sin in your life? Dr. Drew Dickens also joined us to discuss how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help us overcome sin. Dr. Dickens is a visionary leader, AI expert, and scholar who has made significant contributions to the intersection of technology, spirituality, and faith-based engagement. He is also the founder of the Encountering Peace app and the Encounter Podcast, which provides biblical meditations, resources, and dialogue. Dr. Dickens has also authored the book “Whispers of the Spirit: A 40-Day Guide to Intimate Prayer.” We then had Rob West join us to discuss the three sins we need to overcome to achieve biblical financial stewardship: Greed, Fear, and Pride. Rob West is the host of the nationally syndicated radio program, Faith and Finance Live, which airs weekday afternoons at 3 pm on 90.1FM. He is also the host of the Faith and Finance podcast and the CEO of Kingdom Advisors, a community of financial professionals who deliver biblically wise financial advice. Rob has also authored the 21-day devotional, “Look at the Sparrows.” You can hear the highlights of today's program on the Karl and Crew Showcast. Kill sin or it will be killing you. This is the battle plan for every Christian. It's violent. It's personal. And, it's everyday.
