Episode 125 – Behaviour and Thyroid Disease   This is a big topic, and I really enjoyed diving into it. I think we can all agree that the outdated notion that low thyroid hormone levels in dogs directly causes aggression is exactly that – outdated. However, changes or dysregulation in thyroid hormone levels in both dogs and cats can still affect behaviour and this is what I chat about in this episode.   Here are some of the things I mention in the episode: ·         The differences in canine and feline thyroid disease ·         Causes of hypothyroidism in dogs ·         Incidence of hypothyroidism in the canine population ·         Hormone cascade regulation ·         Clinical signs of hypothyroidism and how these can affect behaviour   I also talk about the complexities of diagnosis of thyroid disease and how this can be influenced by certain medications.   Here are the studies I reference in the episode: Gulikers, K.P. and Panciera, D.L., 2003. Evaluation of the effects of clomipramine on canine thyroid function tests. Journal of veterinary internal medicine, 17(1), pp.44-49.   Radosta, L.A., Shofer, F.S. and Reisner, I.R., 2012. Comparison of thyroid analytes in dogs aggressive to familiar people and in non-aggressive dogs. The Veterinary Journal, 192(3), pp.472-475.   Dodman, N.H., Aronson, L., Cottam, N. and Dodds, J.W., 2013. The effect of thyroid replacement in dogs with suboptimal thyroid function on owner-directed aggression: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Journal of Veterinary Behavior, 8(4), pp.225-230.   Carter, G.R., Scott-Moncrieff, J.C., Luescher, A.U. and Moore, G., 2009. In this episode, Rosie Moss speaks with Natalie Dodds.Natalie is a mum of two who lost her partner, Dave, following a workplace crane collapse. She speaks with clear eyed honesty about parenting through shock, bureaucracy and the long tail of grief, while still finding ways to keep Dave's humour and presence alive at the family dinner table. We begin with life before. How Natalie and Dave met, built a home and became parents. Alongside that joy came an earlier rupture, the stillbirth of their daughter, Emily Daisy, at just over 38 weeks. Natalie shares the visceral reality of delivering on a main ward while hearing other babies cry, and the complex coexistence of grief and love that followed. In time, she volunteered with SANDS and welcomed two more children, carrying both loss and hope.At the heart of this conversation is the day of the accident. The unexpected paramedic call. The 126 mile drive. The 7pm news report confirming a crane collapse in Crewe. The moment “alive” became the only word that mattered. What followed was five weeks of ICU limbo. Sedation, ventilation, internal bleeding and sepsis. Dark humour. Small kindnesses from staff. Impossible choices about protecting children from trauma. Then the call no one survives hearing. There is absolutely nothing we can do. The kindest thing is to switch the machines off and let him die.Natalie speaks about what comes after the headline moment. The secondary losses that keep arriving. Mortgage threats. Next of kin complications. Institutions insisting on speaking to the person who has died. An 8.5 year wait for an inquest. The exhaustion of fighting systems that do not bend. She shares how she chose not to take her children into ICU, how she refused false promises, and how she found the words to tell them their dad was not coming home, while still getting them up for school the next morning.Eight and a half years later, the inquest brought answers about training failures and a wrong method statement, followed by the additional blow of hearing “not guilty.” Natalie reflects on the strange mixture of validation and devastation that comes with official findings that change nothing. This is a conversation about compounded grief. About loving someone who has died without freezing them in sainthood. About keeping Dave the man present through stories, laughter and everyday references. About maintaining a close bond with his family. About integrating a new partner into a home where Dave is still spoken about with love.It is also about resilience that does not look shiny. About coping strategies that sound small but keep you upright. Work routines. Blood pressure bingo. Cherries to stay awake on the motorway.Above all, it is about a woman doing the unthinkable and still showing up for her children.A powerful, unfiltered episode about loss, responsibility, anger, love and the long road towards something that resembles stability.

New episodes of Prophecy Radio air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, episode 2 discussion (00:02:59) This is the long-awaited chariot race episode! The Stymphalian birds are super creepy looking. Percy's superpower is water and also breaking the rules. Annabeth is so smart and sneaky! Chiron's musical choices are perfect and we wouldn't change a thing. Clarisse's idea of flirting is…aggressive. How do we feel about the new Chris Rodriguez? Should Annabeth and Percy have kept the coordinates to themselves? Chiron warns Annabeth of the Great Prophecy. How do we feel about the line, “He can't know there's something he can't know”? Boon. Tyson is so sweet to write home to Sally. We love how they're portraying Tyson as an innocent but intelligent person. The mimicry is…unnerving. We love Timothy Simons and Jason Mantzoukas playing opposite each other. Will we see Bondi again down the line? We love everything about the chariot race. Tantalus screaming bloody murder almost took us out. Mariah Carey was the perfect song choice, and Percy holding the stereo was classic. Do you know what's on Mr. D's shirt? Did Tantalus share the wrong coordinates on purpose or is he just an idiot? Was it just us or did Clarisse not seem too excited about her quest? It didn't take much convincing for Clarisse to pick Annabeth. But, oh, the betrayal!! WE FINALLY GET THE WEDDING DRESS. The interplay between these two characters is so natural. Percy is not asking for permission. Is anyone surprised? Quest approved! We're really coming around to Lin as Hermes. He cares about his son so much, even if he's been an absent father this whole time. Percy reasoned out why Annabeth would betray him, and they have a really deep conversation. Did Percy really leave the Camp border? Is the fact that they can never return in the books?? We talk about who Danny Virtue is. Next time on Percy Jackson and the Olympians… Percy Jackson and the Olympians Official Podcast highlights (01:07:20) There was SO MUCH awesome behind-the-scenes information in this episode. Of course, one of the first things they talk about is the dress. Tim's kids are big fans of the series. The dynamic between Tantalus and Mr. D is super interesting. It must be so fun being an adult on a show like this where you just get to be silly. Did you know the whole story behind Mrs. Dodds? Tantalus looks so different from everyone else because he's from the Underworld. They spend a lot of time talking about the chariot race scene, and it is AWESOME. How cool is it that the kids got to work with Danny Virtue? Aryan had to teach someone else how to goat walk this season. We learn more about how Lin came to be Hermes. If given another chance, Tantalus would totally monologue again. Tyson is now Percy's most loyal friend… Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 149, where we'll recap Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, episode 3, as well as the next episode of the Official Percy Jackson Podcast. In 1972 she paired up with Val Finch (nee Pacey) to be the first women's team to complete the KIMM mountain marathon. She was also the first person ever to complete the Paddy Buckley round in Snowdonia, and took part in the inaugural Dragon's Back multiday race in 1992.As well as having done far too much to list here, her longevity is incredible, listing 37 Yorkshire 3 Peaks races to her name for example.Throughout her running career Wendy worked as a doctor, both as a Consultant Rheumatologist and as a Sports Medicine Physician.
