Ep. 765 - Yes, Marvin Harrison Jr. is talented. Very talented. And as we found out this week, he's also perspicacious. (Show of hands who knew what that word meant - or even knew it existed - before Michael Wilson used it to describe his new teammate?) Craig Grialou and Zach Gershman discuss their lack of vocabulary, at least compared to Wilson's; plus, they give their thoughts on what they heard from MHJ when he met the media this week; how he's fitting in; the relationship between him and his fellow rookies; what his presence means for the offense as well as what his teammates have had to say about him. Also, the guys review Flight Plan: Stick & Pick and promote Zach's story on the new kickoff rule, from the players' perspective.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jonah finds himself unable to resist the allure of rank punditry on today's Ruminant. He begins by describing how little he cares about the upcoming midterms before diving into a lengthy rant on that very matter. Next, he tackles the state of Trump's continued influence on the Republican Party, the ills of the modern legislative process, and the undermining of confidence in elections by both parties. After a brief foray into John Dewey's “screwed up” view of democracy, Jonah finishes the show with commentary on Putin's rejection of liberal democratic capitalism, the hypocrisy of his attacks on America, and why Francis Fukuyama was right all along (again).Show Notes:- Richard Rorty's Achieving Our Country- Jonah: “Putin's Dangerous Blend of Propaganda and Hypocrisy”
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 21, 2022 is: perspicacious per-spuh-KAY-shus adjective Perspicacious is a formal word that means “possessing acute mental vision or discernment.” Someone who is perspicacious has a keen ability to notice and understand things that are difficult or not obvious. // She considers herself a perspicacious judge of character. See the entry > Examples: “Some of the film's performances are merely peculiar and others merely apt, but [actor Don] Cheadle is thrilling, with coiled strength and a perspicacious gaze that seems to realize ideas in motion.” — Richard Brody, The New Yorker, 1 July 2021 Did you know? Some perspective on perspicacious: the word combines the Latin perspicac- (from perspicax meaning “clear-sighted,” which in turn comes from perspicere, “to see through”) with the common English adjective suffix -ious. The result is a somewhat uncommon word used to describe someone (such as a reader or observer) or something (such as an essay or analysis) displaying the perception and understanding of subtleties others tend to miss, such as the distinctions between the words perspicacious, shrewd, sagacious, and astute—something our synonym chooser can help with.

The perspicacious parrot did as well as or bested the Harvard students in 12 out of 14 trials, using his beak to point! Perspicacious is another word for wise or shrewd. A French theme park is using trained crows to pick up trash and dispose of it into wastebaskets! Puy du Fou Park located in France’s western region was experiencing a litter problem. But instead of hiring humans to police the trash, they were able to train Rooks, a type of crow to do clean-up duties. The perspicacious Rooks have turned picking up trash into a game as everytime they collect and drop some litter in the trash bin, they receive a morsel of food as a reward. Perspicacious (pərspəˈkāSHəs) means keen or intelligent. The park is now much cleaner than before the employment of these Sapient or resourceful birds and visitors who enjoy watching the Rooks as well. Now that’s something to crow about!
Today’s word of the day is perspicacious, P-E-R-S-P-I-C-A-C-I-O-U-S. Perspicacious is an adjective that means keen or of acute mental vision. The Latin word perspicere (PAIR spee care ay) got things started with a word that meant ‘to look through’ or ‘to see clearly.’ From here a number of English words were born, including periscope, a device used to help navigate a submarine. It may help to think of a perspicacious person as someone skilled at looking through the surface and seeing things clearly — as they would if gazing through a periscope. At first, Henry seemed to be paying Jane a friendly visit. But Jane was perspicacious enough to know he was sniffing around for a favor.
My friend Celeste was devastated when the city said she couldn’t keep her pet pig in her Houston home. It caused quite a brouhaha. Believe it or not, pigs make great pets. Pigs are perspicacious and with a little food encouragement, they can learn many tricks. Perspicacious is another word for intelligent. Pigs have very good memories and don’t forget easily. Pigs demonstrate emotional awareness and respond to the feelings of love, hate, and forgiveness. Pigs are actually very clean animals, they will not go to the bathroom where they eat or sleep and since they don’t perspire, they just need some water to cool them down. Plus pigs are happy just horbgorbling around the house and yard. When it comes to pigs, Winston Churchill said it best: “Dogs look up to man. Cats look down to man. Pigs look us straight in the eye and see an equal."
