Aimee Roberson, executive director of Cultural Survival, joins Mongabay's podcast to discuss how her organization helps Indigenous communities maintain their traditions, languages and knowledge while living among increasingly Westernized societies. As a biologist and geologist with Indigenous heritage, Aimee Roberson is uniquely suited to lead the organization in bridging these worlds, including via “two-eyed seeing,” which blends traditional ecological knowledge and Western science to increase humanity's ways of knowing, toward a view of people as active participants in shaping the natural world. Cultural Survival also sees radio as a critical tool for keeping communities together and fostering a relationship with the land. Roberson shares how their robust radio project is specifically designed to train and empower Indigenous media creators to share local news and cultural information of critical importance, in multiple languages across the world. “It's something that's [a] core part of what we do. Some people are like, ‘Ah, radio, you know, this is 2025. Who cares about radio?' But Indigenous people really care about radio because it keeps our communities together. It's a primary form of communication.” Find the Mongabay Newscast wherever you listen to podcasts, from Apple to Spotify. All past episodes are also listed here at the Mongabay website. «We need source criticism more then ever now.»In the season finale of MetaDAMA, we dive deep into the intersection of philosophy, history, and artificial intelligence with guest Sune Selsbæk-Reitz, tech philosopher with a background in both history and philosophy.Sune introduces the provocative concept of “Promptism”, which is our era's version of positivism, where we believe that truth can be extracted from language models simply by phrasing the question correctly. But just as historians have learned through centuries of source criticism, we must ask the critical questions: Who trained this model? On what data? With what biases? Here are Winfrieds key takeaways:Are numbers and data points neutral? Or can they be used to convey a message, or even a certain philosophical view point?Philosophy is important in data. Here is an example: Data Governance according to Immanuel Kant - best possible governanceData Governance according to Utilitarism - focus on business valueLessons from history studies: question the authenticity of your sources. Who wrote it? For what purpose? Why are you reading it? - same lessons apply to data. That is why we need principles and values in AI ethics.Over-reliance on the objectivity of math - is math binary? Right or wrong? - this has been introduced into algorithmic thinking and AI.This is the reason why «algorithmic authority» is an issue - because the algorithm says «right» doesn't mean it is right. Our mindset is constantly evolving. That's why we cannot predict tomorrow's bias. We need to ensure that our systems evolve with us.What is the real purpose of AI systems? Are the core values only efficiency, automation, or is it human dignity or autonomy?Promptism:A new way of «positivism: Just because its written down its true»Promptism is my term for a subtle but growing mindset around the globe, that you can extract truths from a language model, just by wording your prompt well.»LLMs are very fluent and flattering - they say what people want to hear.«That's what Large Language models are: You are not getting the truth. You are just getting the most common answer.»Objectivity is a myth. It is always subjective, so we need to read not only the text but also peoples intentions with the text.Responsibility for understanding at the limitations and needed criticism of LLM output is shared.Producers have a responsibility to ensure that you can know, when models are hallucination, guardrails in models to ensure that output is not looked at as the truth.Readers are responsible to learn how to read and understand machines.Consumers need rot push for transparency.Without accountability, trust is eroding.Politeness is a way for machines to ensure that users keep using them.Shouldn't rather an LLM as a «conversation partner» challenge you? Disagreement is part of learning.«Agreeableness is addictive.»People are starting to get influenced by how LLMs are writing. It changes written conversation. Is language narrowed down to a certain path defined through AI? Is language becoming controllable?LLMs affect our lives in the way we read, write, talk, even think. There is a worldview baked into the system.Literacy means also critical thinking.
There's no such thing as a neutral reading of the Bible. Every reading is inflected by first-person experience, cultural context, history, and more. In this episode, biblical scholars Janette Ok and Jordan J. Ryan join Mark Labberton to reflect on The New Testament in Color, a groundbreaking new biblical commentary that brings together diverse voices across racial, cultural, and social locations. They share how their own ethnic and cultural backgrounds as Asian American and Filipino Canadian readers shaped their understanding of Scripture, the importance of social location, using the creeds as guardrails for hermeneutics, and how contextual interpretation deepens biblical authority rather than diminishing it. Episode Highlights “There is no such thing as a neutral reading of the Bible.” —Mark Labberton “It really dawned on me the importance of being aware of who I am, my family background, my history in the United States, all these things.” —Janette Ok “Filipinos I think are always sort of on the margins… trying to understand how Asian we really are or aren't.” —Jordan J. Ryan “Objectivity is nothing more than the fruit of authentic subjectivity.” —Jordan J. Ryan quoting Bernard Lonergan “Colorblindness is actually something that's not true… particularity is fundamental to the gospel.” —Janette Ok “It was one of the most freeing experiences that I've had because it finally gave me permission to do the thing that I'd always wanted to do.” —Jordan J. Ryan Helpful Links and Resources The New Testament in Color: A Multiethnic Commentary on the New Testament (IVP Academic) About Janette Ok Janette Ok is associate professor of New Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary. A leading scholar in Asian American biblical interpretation, she is a co-editor of The New Testament in Color and author of Constructing Ethnic Identity in 1 Peter. About Jordan Ryan Jordan Ryan is associate professor of New Testament at Wheaton College and Graduate School, and author of The Role of the Synagogue in the Aims of Jesus and From the Passion to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. His research explores Acts, archaeology, and Filipino American biblical interpretation. Show Notes The New Testament in color and contextual biblical Interpretation “There is no such thing as a neutral reading of the Bible.” Janette's growing up in a Korean immigrant church in Detroit, carrying “the weight of assimilation.” Asian American literature, especially Bone by Fae Myenne Ng Opening our eyes to the power of articulating immigrant experience Jordan Ryan's mixed-race Canadian upbringing—Filipino mother, white father—and early encounters with Scripture through unhoused communities. “Filipinos are always sort of on the margins of Asian America.” —Jordan Ryan Contextual reading of the bible All readings are contextual, contrasting liberation theology, unhoused readers, and Western academic traditions Challenges and dangers of contextualization “The first danger is to think that we can remove ourselves from the work of textual interpretation.” Social location is not an external lens but intrinsic to the gospel. “Objectivity is nothing more than the fruit of authentic subjectivity.” Archaeology that informs contextual questions “Colorblind” readings ignore particularity and miss the incarnational nature of Scripture. Biblical authority and the living word Biblical authority as central: “It's why I teach at Wheaton College and not somewhere else.” “When we say the Bible is the living Word of God… it means it has to speak to us today.” Preachers already contextualize every Sunday; The New Testament in Color makes this explicit and communal New Testament in Color was initiated by Esau McCaulley in 2018 Preceded by works like True to Our Native Land and Women's Bible Commentary Distinctive by gathering scholars from African American, Latino, Asian American, Native American, and European American backgrounds in one volume Goal: Embody diversity without sacrificing particularity or biblical trust. Commentary on Acts, including Filipino American theology and diaspora identity “It was one of the most freeing experiences that I've had.” He traced themes of foreignness, colonialism, and God's care for the imprisoned in Acts 1 Peter and Asian American biblical interpretation, wrestling with exile, belonging, and “perpetual foreigner” stereotypes Home as central theological concern—“not everyone feels at home in the same way.” —Janette Ok Editing, diversity, and reader reception Balancing freedom with theological boundaries rooted in the creeds Diversity created unevenness, but also richness and authenticity. “The fingerprints that make it so living.” —Janette Ok Professors report the book resonates with students of color whose lived experiences often feel absent in traditional scholarship “Sometimes people don't know where to begin… I encourage my students to always consult scholars who read and look differently from themselves.” Production Credits Conversing is produced and distributed in partnership with Comment magazine and Fuller Seminary.

We go deep on his own path of healing depression through ayahuasca and other entheogens, how having a partner with a five-year-old has altered his perspective, and the power and limitations of comedy.Lots of laughs, heart, and authenticity up in here. “When Genocide Wasn't News” is a recently released Canadian book that documents major Canadian news organisations' reporting on Gaza. The book claims the media has “whitewashed Israeli violence, dehumanised Palestinians and smeared a growing protest movement.” Gabriela Perdomo Páez, Assistant Professor of journalism at Mount Royal University, says journalists who support peace efforts can easily be accused of being “biased” in favour of those promoting peace. For International Desk, Wire Host Caeden spoke to Perdomo Páez about Canadian news coverage of Gaza.

Renunciation: The word has certain connotations that are often tied to deprivation or unhappiness. What we find in the writings of the great ascetics, St. Isaac especially, is something quite different; the weaning of ourselves from the things that we are attached to in the world in order to become more attached to God, to what endures and fills the soul with consolation and strength. For example, we are called to embrace the practice of vigils, to rise during the night to pray and thereby humbling the mind and the body. Yet Isaac does not see this as costly but rather as restorative and promising consolation in times of trial and affliction. It is in silence, often deepest during the night and free of distraction, that we are able to listen to God and receive what he desires to give us. Likewise, we are to persevere in spiritual reading while we dwell in stillness. We let go of the hectic pace of society and the busyness into which we often thrust ourselves in order to taste the sweetness of the wisdom of the scriptures and the fathers. Perhaps more challenging, we are told that we are to love poverty. We are to willingly let go of material goods and radically simplify our lives. In doing so, Isaac tells us, the mind remains collected and is secured from wandering. We often become anxious about our worldly security and protecting what ilwe have come to possess. We become driven to spend more time focused on the things of this world than we are pursuing the life of virtue and prayer. In a similar vein, Isaac tells us to detest superfluity so that our thoughts might remain untroubled. Again, filling our lives with things, activities, work or social engagements steals from us solitude and the silence that is born from it. Surrounded constantly by the noise and the affairs of the world we begin to experience intense anxiety and depression seeing only the presence of chaos and violence that makes one question reality and the value and purpose of life. Part of the beauty of reading the desert fathers is that they reveal to us the beauty and the dignity of the human person made in the image and likeness of God and redeemed by the blood of Christ. Their lives and their writings fill the heart with hope in a dark world and set the soul on fire to to embrace what has been promised us by our Lord. To God be the glory unto ages of ages. But when I have an icon on my wall, I find it a grace when I lay there awake in bed and make simple prayer of the heart, simple acts. This seems valuable. I'll be ok to hear if there's more expected than this. Objectivity is desired here. Work in progress here. 00:33:05 David: I have a prayer book that has a Greek orthodox evening prayer and in the ending it says "we sing to you in the night- Holy, holy holy are you oh God, through the prayers of the Theotokos have mercy on me". Is this a practice when one begins a vigil? When I do wake I always try to say it but was not sure if it is something formal in vigils? 00:35:59 Jessica Imanaka: Several Trappist monks I know have said they don't need as much as sleep as medical science dictates. The deceased abbot used to say that prayer reduces the physical need for sleep. Whenever I go on retreat, praying the full office, I just can't sleep as much. My body doesn't want to. 00:36:13 Anthony: On waking up at night....some people say 3am is the devil's hour, so it's advisable to pray then. I think that gives way too much focus on the devil's? Or is this real Christian tradition? 00:40:58 Myles Davidson: The noonday devil was a desert father thing 00:41:11 Nicholas B. In this episode, Derek Rishmawy, Alastair Roberts, and Brad East are joined by political theorist Jason Blakely to explore the life, work, and legacy of Alasdair MacIntyre. Best known for After Virtue, MacIntyre diagnosed the deep moral confusion of modernity and called for a return to virtue, tradition, and narrative. The conversation traces his journey from Marxism to Thomism, unpacks his critique of Enlightenment liberalism, and considers how his thought challenges both the postliberal right and progressive deconstruction. Along the way, the hosts reflect on what it means to form moral communities in a world of fragmented ethics. In a world where senseless violence feels constant, politics are fiercely divisive, and nobody seems interested in having a debate or thinking they could be wrong — it can feel like rationality is becoming extinct. Add to that social media algorithms that tend to feed people content they want to see as opposed to a balanced stream of factual information, and the idea of objectivity can start to feel like a lost cause. So, how do people stay grounded amid all the noise? And is there any value in trying to understand people whose actions seem completely irrational? Author and clinical psychologist Dr. Kevin Gilliland unpacks these complex topics, sharing how to navigate a chaotic world by focusing on your “psychological dashboard” — a set of tools and indicators that help maintain psychological health when things get overwhelming. Plus, Dr. Gilliland and Trey take a walk down memory lane, sharing stories from their college days when their friendship first began. Learn more about your ad choices. We love the idea of being objective. Open-minded. Willing to learn new things, unlearn old things, admit when we get things wrong and to look at 'old things' through a new lens or perhaps even, someone else's lens. Telling others how objective we are makes us feel good about ourselves. It's considered a noble trait and something that's socially desirable and who doesn't want that? But as Anaïs Nin told us over a hundred years ago. "you don't see things as they are, you see them as you are." So there's that. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Beginning in 1983 as an entry-level assistant on the international assignment desk at CNN's headquarters in Atlanta, Amanpour rose through the organization becoming a reporter at the New York bureau, and later, the network's leading international correspondent. On the ground during the siege of Sarajevo, Amanpour exposed the brutality of the Bosnian War, reporting on the daily tragedy of life for civilians in the city. She was outspoken, calling out the human rights abuses, massacres and genocide committed against the Bosnian Moslems, later saying “There are some situations one simply cannot be neutral about, because when you are neutral you are an accomplice.” Throughout her time at CNN, Amanpour has secured exclusive interviews with global power players. In the wake of the September 11 attacks she was the first international correspondent to interview British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Afghan President Hamid Karzai. During the height of the Arab Spring she conducted an Emmy-winning interview with Libya's former leader ‘Colonel' Moammar Gadhafi, and she was also the last journalist to interview Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak just before he was deposed. In January 2014, Amanpour also exclusively broke the news of a dossier of testimony and photographs which alleged to show systematic torture of prisoners by government forces in Syria, evidence she used to confront Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev about his government's support for the Assad regime. In addition to her work as an anchor and reporter, Amanpour is an active rights campaigner. A board member of the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Centre for Public Integrity and the International Women's Media Foundation, she has used her profile to raise awareness of key global issues and journalists' rights. She has interviewed educational rights activist Malala Yousafzai for CNN on several occasions – bringing focus to her courage and international advocacy work. Amanpour has earned 16 News and Documentary Emmy Awards, four Peabody Awards, two George Polk Awards, three duPont-Columbia Awards and the IWMF's Courage in Journalism Award. She has received nine honorary degrees, is an honorary citizen of Sarajevo, and a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Freedom of the Press and the Safety of Journalists. https://youtu.be/2yQWRvrbVUI Podcast audio: Foreign policy is both a political activity and a field of applied ethics. However, the metaphysical and epistemological premises held by theorists and practitioners shape their view of ethics. The lack of an objective view of the world has led to theories and policies that do not support, and are often harmful to, the role of a proper government. However, as Scott McDonald explains, an objective understanding of the global system can lead to a first-handed foreign policy. Recorded live on June 14 in Anaheim, CA as part of OCON 2024.

Daniel Santos @DanielSantosAnalysis joins us to discuss 'death of the author', which is a method of engaging with art that does NOT involve any consideration for what the author intended for the work to mean. Though we started out there, we slowly moved into topics like AI, God, Objectivity and whether or not people really are seeing Jesus in their coffee, toast or potato chips. All 3 of us are still trying to feel our way through to finding the best ways to analyze works of art and had a fun time exploring the possibilities that a method like this can bring to the table. Tom welcomes back Martin Armstrong from Armstrong Economics to explore current global economic trends, geopolitical tensions, and market reactions. Armstrong discusses how governments worldwide are facing declining trust due to progressive agendas, citing examples like Germany's shift toward far-right parties and Europe's struggles with migration. Armstrong highlights the cyclical nature of political movements, referencing Trump's 2016 victory as a starting point for this global anti-government sentiment. He also touches on free speech restrictions, drawing parallels between historical financial suppression in Europe and today's broader censorship trends. Regarding U.S.-China trade tensions, Armstrong explains that tariffs are often misunderstood, citing historical context from the 1930s to show they don't cause economic collapses but can lead to trade wars. He critiques media coverage for sensationalism, particularly Bloomberg's recent claims about market corrections, arguing these panic-inducing narratives mislead investors. Armstrong also delves into Trump's policies, questioning his understanding of general economic and suggesting that lower corporate taxes could boost competitiveness. However, he warns against blaming Trump for broader economic declines, which he attributes to global trends rather than individual leaders. The discussion shifts to gold's role as a safe haven during geopolitical instability, with Armstrong emphasizing its historical correlation with war and political uncertainty. He is the former chairman of Princeton Economics International Ltd. He is best known for his economic predictions based on the Economic Confidence Model, which he developed. At age 13, Armstrong began working at a coin and stamp dealership in Pennsauken, New Jersey. After buying a bag of rare Canadian pennies, he became a millionaire in 1965 at the age of 15. He continued to work on weekends through high school, finding the real-world exciting, for this was the beginning of the collapse of the gold standard. Martin became captivated by this shocking revelation that there were not just booms and busts, but also peaks and valleys that would last centuries. Armstrong progressed from gold coin investments to following commodity prices for precious metals. In 1973, he began publishing commodity market predictions as a hobby, and in 1983 Armstrong began accepting paid subscriptions for a forecast newsletter. "In Armstrong's view of the world where boom-bust cycles occur like clockwork every 8.6 years, what matters is his record as a forecaster. He called Russia's financial collapse in 1998, using a model that also pointed to a peak just before the Japanese stock market crashed in 1989. These days, as the European sovereign-debt crisis roils markets worldwide, he reminds readers of his October 1997 prediction that the creation of the euro "will merely transform currency speculation into bond speculation," leading to the system's eventual collapse." His Website Armstrong Economics offers a unique perspective intended to educate the public and organizations on the global economic and political environment's underlying trends.
Why thinking like a scientist will fix the voice in your head and harness it to coach yourself in a rowing boat. 00:30 Positive self-talk coaching When you row you are thinking about what you do - it's the voice in your head. The devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other. Masters work best when thinking about one thing at a time. Create the outcome you want with different ways of saying it - how will you do it, when will you do it. 02:30 4 competency stages - unconscious incompetence - conscious incompetence - conscious competence - unconscious competence When you no longer need to use your brain to think about one technical point, you free up your mind to think about other things. Acquire the skill, learn it and put it into the background in your mind so you can do the skill without thinking about it. The voice in your head is working hard. 04:30 Objectivity is key The voice in your head can be devilish. It talks subjectively to you which can make a negative spiral of thoughts which do not help you to row better. Train the voice in your head by thinking like a scientist. They are objective (no value judgements), it's an observation only. Assess if you did or did not do the movement e.g. squaring early. It's not "good" or "bad". Keep the voice in your head 'on task'. 06:15 Can you self coach in a rowing boat? Watching your blade is a good way to start self-coaching. The blade is a good indicator of how you are rowing. Look at it at the catch, blade depth at the mid-stroke, look at the finish. Row in circles watching one oar at a time. Play games with yourself - on the water have some fun. Take a small challenge - little goals give a focus for self-coaching. Try exaggerating part of the stroke so your body moves with precision and consistency as if you're demonstrating to a beginner. Notice how this impacts your stroke and how the boat moves. You can do it deliberately wrong too. That's great fun. It creates a contrast between the two - find a happy mid point. 10:00 Positive Self Talk Enable your brain to be a positive thought that adds to your rowing. Try rowing for 10 strokes without thinking of anything. After those ten, allow your brain to focus on your technique point and do the scientist observation again. If yes, continue rowing without thinking; if no, make a small change to get back to the technique and then continue rowing without thinking. Use this skill to train your brain through the 4 competency stages towards unconscious competence. https://youtu.be/093vQKWPwvs Podcast audio: Objectivity is the key to avoiding misunderstandings and making one-to-one conversations productive. There are two contexts of knowledge, two value hierarchies, and two “crows” to consider to communicate effectively. In this talk from OCON 2024, Jean Moroney covers the topics: what constitutes subjective vs. objective goals for a conversation, the need to manage emotions as they arise rather than shut them down, and how doing this effectively by “holding all of the values with care” can get a conversation back on track and help you deal objectively with another person's real or apparent irrationality. Recorded live on June 14 in Anaheim, CA as part of OCON 2024.
For decades, objectivity has been cited as journalism's gold standard, promising that journalists would stick “to the facts" and deliver both sides of the story, excluding their personal views. Those in support say it builds trust and gives newsreaders the information they need to form their own opinions. Those against say it suppresses certain valuable viewpoints and that some issues don't merit the "both sides" treatment. Now, we debate: "Is Objectivity Essential in Journalism?” Arguing Yes: Bret Stephens, Opinion Columnist at The New York Times Arguing No: Leonard Downie, Jr, Former Executive Editor of The Washington Post Nayeema Raza, Journalist and executive producer and co-host of Vox Media's "On with Kara Swisher" podcast, is the guest moderator. In this episode of Still Unbelievable! Matthew reviews another conversion story. This one features Daniel, who is known as Darwin to Jesus on that hive of shitiness formally known as Twitter. Daniel's takes on matters of religion and atheism are bad, so bad that there are many who actually think he's a troll parodying the worst of religion. Our confidence that he is a real Christian is about 90%, the 10% in reserve is because there are times we wonder if he is a very clever troll. The main reason is because a troll couldn't keep it up for as long as he has. Which makes the things he says worthy of Matthew's special brand of sarcastic retort, which will be employed by the bucket in this episode, because the things Daniel says are genuinely pathetic and any christian who gives his stupidity a platform deserves ridicule. The episode being responded to is link 1 and is from the podcast, Ex-skeptic. Yes, there really is a podcast called ex-skeptic, featuring versions of Christianity that actually celebrate turning away from skeptical thought. It's as though they are no longer ashamed of unreasonable credulity. Fatin Abbas was born in Khartoum, Sudan, but her parents were forced to leave Sudan when the military seized power there in 1989, when Fatin was just 8 years old. The family settled in New York. She earned a BA in English literature from the University of Cambridge, a PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard University, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Hunter College, the City University of New York. Her novel, Ghost Season is an exploration of Sudan's almost unrecognised history, through five vibrant and interesting characters who find themselves working for an NGO in a border town between north and south Sudan. It is a really powerful story of power dynamics, colonialism, history, love, friendship, identity, belonging, self-acceptance and so much more. After more than 16 months of war, Sudan has descended into one of the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The country is at imminent risk of collapsing after over a year and a half of violent conflict and is on the verge of mass famine with its food supply decimated and young children now starving to death in its cities, villages, and displacement camps. Over 10 million people have been displaced, and every single person in Sudan is affected by this worsening crisis.I hope this conversations helps us to keep Sudan in our thoughts, hearts, mind, prayers and in our activism always. ----As always, please do like, subscribe and follow.
