Daniel Santos @DanielSantosAnalysis joins us to discuss 'death of the author', which is a method of engaging with art that does NOT involve any consideration for what the author intended for the work to mean. Though we started out there, we slowly moved into topics like AI, God, Objectivity and whether or not people really are seeing Jesus in their coffee, toast or potato chips. All 3 of us are still trying to feel our way through to finding the best ways to analyze works of art and had a fun time exploring the possibilities that a method like this can bring to the table. However, we'll still be doing our Dev History episodes on future podcasts about dope games. Please consider supporting us on Patreon if you have the means. Thanks for watching! Tom welcomes back Martin Armstrong from Armstrong Economics to explore current global economic trends, geopolitical tensions, and market reactions. Armstrong discusses how governments worldwide are facing declining trust due to progressive agendas, citing examples like Germany's shift toward far-right parties and Europe's struggles with migration. Armstrong highlights the cyclical nature of political movements, referencing Trump's 2016 victory as a starting point for this global anti-government sentiment. He also touches on free speech restrictions, drawing parallels between historical financial suppression in Europe and today's broader censorship trends. Regarding U.S.-China trade tensions, Armstrong explains that tariffs are often misunderstood, citing historical context from the 1930s to show they don't cause economic collapses but can lead to trade wars. He critiques media coverage for sensationalism, particularly Bloomberg's recent claims about market corrections, arguing these panic-inducing narratives mislead investors. Armstrong also delves into Trump's policies, questioning his understanding of general economic and suggesting that lower corporate taxes could boost competitiveness. However, he warns against blaming Trump for broader economic declines, which he attributes to global trends rather than individual leaders. The discussion shifts to gold's role as a safe haven during geopolitical instability, with Armstrong emphasizing its historical correlation with war and political uncertainty. He is the former chairman of Princeton Economics International Ltd. He is best known for his economic predictions based on the Economic Confidence Model, which he developed. At age 13, Armstrong began working at a coin and stamp dealership in Pennsauken, New Jersey. After buying a bag of rare Canadian pennies, he became a millionaire in 1965 at the age of 15. He continued to work on weekends through high school, finding the real-world exciting, for this was the beginning of the collapse of the gold standard. Martin became captivated by this shocking revelation that there were not just booms and busts, but also peaks and valleys that would last centuries. Armstrong progressed from gold coin investments to following commodity prices for precious metals. In 1973, he began publishing commodity market predictions as a hobby, and in 1983 Armstrong began accepting paid subscriptions for a forecast newsletter. "In Armstrong's view of the world where boom-bust cycles occur like clockwork every 8.6 years, what matters is his record as a forecaster. He called Russia's financial collapse in 1998, using a model that also pointed to a peak just before the Japanese stock market crashed in 1989. These days, as the European sovereign-debt crisis roils markets worldwide, he reminds readers of his October 1997 prediction that the creation of the euro "will merely transform currency speculation into bond speculation," leading to the system's eventual collapse." His Website Armstrong Economics offers a unique perspective intended to educate the public and organizations on the global economic and political environment's underlying trends.
Why thinking like a scientist will fix the voice in your head and harness it to coach yourself in a rowing boat. 00:30 Positive self-talk coaching When you row you are thinking about what you do - it's the voice in your head. The devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other. Masters work best when thinking about one thing at a time. Create the outcome you want with different ways of saying it - how will you do it, when will you do it. 02:30 4 competency stages - unconscious incompetence - conscious incompetence - conscious competence - unconscious competence When you no longer need to use your brain to think about one technical point, you free up your mind to think about other things. Acquire the skill, learn it and put it into the background in your mind so you can do the skill without thinking about it. The voice in your head is working hard. 04:30 Objectivity is key The voice in your head can be devilish. It talks subjectively to you which can make a negative spiral of thoughts which do not help you to row better. Train the voice in your head by thinking like a scientist. They are objective (no value judgements), it's an observation only. Assess if you did or did not do the movement e.g. squaring early. It's not "good" or "bad". Keep the voice in your head 'on task'. 06:15 Can you self coach in a rowing boat? Watching your blade is a good way to start self-coaching. The blade is a good indicator of how you are rowing. Look at it at the catch, blade depth at the mid-stroke, look at the finish. Row in circles watching one oar at a time. Play games with yourself - on the water have some fun. Take a small challenge - little goals give a focus for self-coaching. Try exaggerating part of the stroke so your body moves with precision and consistency as if you're demonstrating to a beginner. Notice how this impacts your stroke and how the boat moves. You can do it deliberately wrong too. That's great fun. It creates a contrast between the two - find a happy mid point. 10:00 Positive Self Talk Enable your brain to be a positive thought that adds to your rowing. Try rowing for 10 strokes without thinking of anything. After those ten, allow your brain to focus on your technique point and do the scientist observation again. If yes, continue rowing without thinking; if no, make a small change to get back to the technique and then continue rowing without thinking. Use this skill to train your brain through the 4 competency stages towards unconscious competence. https://youtu.be/093vQKWPwvs Podcast audio: Objectivity is the key to avoiding misunderstandings and making one-to-one conversations productive. There are two contexts of knowledge, two value hierarchies, and two “crows” to consider to communicate effectively. In this talk from OCON 2024, Jean Moroney covers the topics: what constitutes subjective vs. objective goals for a conversation, the need to manage emotions as they arise rather than shut them down, and how doing this effectively by “holding all of the values with care” can get a conversation back on track and help you deal objectively with another person's real or apparent irrationality. Recorded live on June 14 in Anaheim, CA as part of OCON 2024.
For decades, objectivity has been cited as journalism's gold standard, promising that journalists would stick “to the facts" and deliver both sides of the story, excluding their personal views. Those in support say it builds trust and gives newsreaders the information they need to form their own opinions. Those against say it suppresses certain valuable viewpoints and that some issues don't merit the "both sides" treatment. Now, we debate: "Is Objectivity Essential in Journalism?” Arguing Yes: Bret Stephens, Opinion Columnist at The New York Times Arguing No: Leonard Downie, Jr, Former Executive Editor of The Washington Post Nayeema Raza, Journalist and executive producer and co-host of Vox Media's "On with Kara Swisher" podcast, is the guest moderator. The way we see the world is shaped by everything we've learned and experienced over time whether from family, society, or personal moments. Some of these beliefs help us, while others might hold us back without us even realizing it. Taking a step back to recognize these patterns can open the door to growth and a fresh perspective.By making small shifts in how we think, we can train our minds to focus on the good instead of getting stuck in negativity. Simple habits, like practicing gratitude, can make a big difference over time. In this episode of Still Unbelievable! Matthew reviews another conversion story. This one features Daniel, who is known as Darwin to Jesus on that hive of shitiness formally known as Twitter. Daniel's takes on matters of religion and atheism are bad, so bad that there are many who actually think he's a troll parodying the worst of religion. Our confidence that he is a real Christian is about 90%, the 10% in reserve is because there are times we wonder if he is a very clever troll. The main reason is because a troll couldn't keep it up for as long as he has. Which makes the things he says worthy of Matthew's special brand of sarcastic retort, which will be employed by the bucket in this episode, because the things Daniel says are genuinely pathetic and any christian who gives his stupidity a platform deserves ridicule. The episode being responded to is link 1 and is from the podcast, Ex-skeptic. Yes, there really is a podcast called ex-skeptic, featuring versions of Christianity that actually celebrate turning away from skeptical thought. It's as though they are no longer ashamed of unreasonable credulity. Fatin Abbas was born in Khartoum, Sudan, but her parents were forced to leave Sudan when the military seized power there in 1989, when Fatin was just 8 years old. The family settled in New York. She earned a BA in English literature from the University of Cambridge, a PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard University, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Hunter College, the City University of New York. Her novel, Ghost Season is an exploration of Sudan's almost unrecognised history, through five vibrant and interesting characters who find themselves working for an NGO in a border town between north and south Sudan. It is a really powerful story of power dynamics, colonialism, history, love, friendship, identity, belonging, self-acceptance and so much more. After more than 16 months of war, Sudan has descended into one of the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The country is at imminent risk of collapsing after over a year and a half of violent conflict and is on the verge of mass famine with its food supply decimated and young children now starving to death in its cities, villages, and displacement camps. Over 10 million people have been displaced, and every single person in Sudan is affected by this worsening crisis.I hope this conversations helps us to keep Sudan in our thoughts, hearts, mind, prayers and in our activism always. ----As always, please do like, subscribe and follow. They explore the effectiveness of different pedaling techniques, the implications of heart rate variations, and how to assess the stress of high-intensity sessions. In this conversation, the hosts delve into the complexities of lactate levels and their relationship to training stress, emphasizing that the increase in stress is not linear. They discuss the importance of recovery, especially for older athletes, and the need to listen to one's body rather than relying solely on objective metrics. The practicality of lactate testing is questioned, with the consensus that while it can provide useful information, it may not be worth the hassle for most athletes. The conversation concludes with encouragement for athletes to focus on their training and recovery, especially in light of personal challenges. Takeaways Zone two riding may not be effective without specific drills. High and low cadence training can be beneficial for certain events. Research on cadence training shows mixed results. Single leg drills can help identify muscular imbalances. Preferred cadence varies by cycling discipline. Heart rate can decrease with increased training volume. A decline in heart rate can indicate improved fitness. Lactate testing can provide insights into workout stress. Intensity sessions should be tailored to individual recovery. Understanding lactate levels can help manage training loads. Lactate levels vary among individuals and are not a strict measure of stress. Recovery is crucial, especially for older athletes. Training should balance subjective feelings and objective metrics. Lactate testing can be cumbersome and may not provide significant benefits. Listening to your body is essential for effective training. VO2 max sessions can be more stressful than longer endurance rides. Athletes should focus on their overall training volume and recovery. Subjective experiences can often contradict objective data. It's important to adjust training intensity based on how one feels. Overcoming personal challenges can lead to significant fitness gains. Titles Exploring the Effectiveness of Pedaling Drills Understanding Heart Rate Changes in Cyclists The Role of Lactate Testing in Cycling Performance Maximizing Cycling Efficiency Through Cadence Training Sound Bites "Zone two riding is a waste of time." "I think there is a purpose for everything." "Stress increases exponentially, not linearly." "You need to be aware of your body." "Recovery should be his main focus." Coimisiún na Meán has today published revised Media Services Codes and Rules, completing the process of updating its regulations to implement changes under the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) and the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022. Under the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act, Coimisiún na Meán is empowered to develop codes and rules which apply to video-on-demand providers as well as television and radio broadcasters established in Ireland. The AVMSD provides for minimum standards and obligations that video-on demand providers and television broadcasters must adhere to in a variety of areas, including child safety, the accessibility of their services, and the prohibition of content that incites hatred. The Online Safety and Media Regulation Act establishes the regulatory framework for these services and for radio broadcasters. Aoife MacEvilly, Broadcasting and Video-on-Demand Commissioner at Coimisiún na Meán said: ''To ensure a thriving and safe media landscape for Ireland, it is crucial that the Codes and Rules which apply to broadcasters and now, for the first time, to video-on-demand service providers are up-to-date and in-line with EU regulations. We have been engaging with media service providers in recent months and following the conclusion of our public consultations, are happy to have published nine sets of Codes and Rules which are now in effect.'' The nine regulations published include a new Audiovisual On-Demand Media Service Code and Rules, marking the first time that video-on-demand (VOD) services have been subject to formal regulatory oversight by Coimisiún na Meán. These new Codes and Rules were developed following a public consultation which concluded in August 2024. The other existing Codes and Rules have undergone updates to comply with the AVMSD, and includes the Code of Programme Standards, the Access Rules for Television Broadcasters, and the General Commercial Communications Code. These Codes and Rules were updated following a public consultation which concluded in October 2024. The new and revised Media Services Codes and Rules which have been published are: Media Service Code and Rules (Audiovisual On-Demand Media Service Providers) - new rules for audiovisual on-demand (VOD) providers which require the restriction of content that may incite hatred, which provides protections for children from accessing inappropriate content and which obliges providers to ensure their programmes are accessible for people with disabilities. Media Service Code and Rules (Advertising, Teleshopping, Signal Integrity and Information) - revised rules for television broadcasters on advertising and teleshopping, including daily limits for advertising and teleshopping spots. Media Service Code and Rules (Advertising for Radio Broadcasters) - revised rules to ensure that advertising is recognisable and distinguishable from editorial content, and which includes daily limits for radio advertising. Media Service Rules (Access Rules for Television Broadcasters) - revised rules for television broadcasters to ensure that programmes which are produced are made continuously and progressively more accessible to people with disabilities. General Commercial Communications Code - revised code which sets out rules for broadcasters on commercial communications including advertisements, sponsorships and product placement. Children's Commercial Communications Code - revised code which sets out additional rules for commercial communications directed at children and is aimed at protecting audiences under 18 years of age. Code of Fairness, Objectivity and Impartiality - revised code which provides principles for broadcasters to apply in order to achieve fairness, objectivity and impartiality in news and current affairs coverage. Code of Programme Standards - revised code which sets out principles applying to editorial content with a view to minimising harm and undue offence Short News Reporting Code - revised c...

People say they long for that misty past when the news was just the facts, but that never was, of course. Newsrooms are human organizations and journalists are people and however they may strive for objectivity, they come with biases shaped by newsroom culture newsroom and audience expectations. The smart game isn't to avoid all bias; it's to recognize it and then broaden your news consumption beyond one perspective. Today's guest has for years been helping people do that. He's John Gable, founder of AllSides, known for its media bias chart, which ranks well-known newsrooms by their perceived political leanings. All Sides also aggregates the most pressing news of the day linking to Right Left and Center takes on each headline. John and Eric discuss how the bias rankings are made and how they ought to be used. Eric's a user, because it gets me out of my echo chamber. Episode #94 In this episode of the Awakened Heart Podcast, I sit down with Sean Bw Parker to dive into the complex world of cultural theory, exploring how universities shape societal values, and how groupthink and cancel culture have evolved. We discuss the role of feminism today, shifts in the political landscape, and why individualism and freedom of expression are crucial. We also touch on justice reform, the importance of truth in society, and the unique challenges young people face in navigating these issues. Throughout, we emphasize the need for open dialogue and the courage to speak one's truth in an increasingly polarized world. With over eight books, six albums, and a TEDx talk to his name, Sean's work spans cultural theory, art, media critique, and justice reform. For ten years, he lived in Istanbul, immersing himself in the music and culture scene, where he wrote for Time Out Istanbul and Louder Than War and taught English and cultural studies. Sean brings a centrist libertarian perspective, often tackling controversial topics like cancel culture, media, justice reform, and the nuances within progressive ideologies. His latest book, A Delicate Balance of Reason – Adventures In The Culture Wars, explores these issues in depth and was released this May, with an Audible version coming soon. Sean's thoughtful approach and diverse experiences make him the perfect guest for an eye-opening discussion today. Takeaways Cultural theory analyzes societal narratives beyond individual stories. Feminism is divided on issues related to gender identity and women's rights. The political landscape is shifting towards populism and individualism. Art and creativity are essential for expressing individual perspectives. Truth and honesty are crucial in navigating societal challenges. Justice reform is needed to address miscarriages of justice. The younger generation is malleable and needs guidance in critical thinking. Living with an awakened heart means embracing truth and individuality. Tom welcomes back Matthew Pipenburg from Von Greyerz Gold Switzerland to discusses the seemingly inevitable economic decline. Matthew discusses the relevance of Ernest Hemingway's perspectives on inflation and war to today's economic landscape. Pipenburg emphasized the potential for political opportunists to manipulate conflicts and economic instability for their advantage, leading to long-term ruin. He also touches upon Hemingway's background and how his experiences shaped his views on these issues. The conversation shifts towards the importance of addressing misaligned incentives within systems and the potential dangers of fascist-like tendencies in modern politics. He discusses the implications of wealth inequality, consolidated power, and corporate influence on politics and decision-making bodies. He advocates for a reevaluation of anti-trust laws to combat monopolies in various sectors, including media, banking, agriculture, and tech. Tom then asks about the significance of political intelligence and leadership. They discussed the historical context leading to economic crises and the implications of record-breaking public debt on society and the economy. Pipenburg compares the economic situation Nixon faced in the 1970s with the present day, arguing that we have entered a permanent ruin stage from a period of temporary prosperity due to unprecedented issuance of debt. Matthew also explores the impact of monetary dilution on various asset classes, including Bitcoin, gold, and the S&P 500, in relation to the diminishing purchasing power of the U.S. dollar. The conversation focuses on the cyclicality of the gold and silver markets and their long-term trends due to the loss of trust in fiat money and central banks seeking alternatives. He also discusses the potential implications of countries like China and Russia returning to a gold-backed currency as part of their economic strategies. Lastly, he encourages patience, objectivity, and critical thinking to protect against potential chaos. Summary In this conversation, Sean and Terry discuss the critical importance of conducting audits in healthcare practices, emphasizing the need for both internal and external reviews to ensure compliance and accuracy in coding and billing. They highlight real-world examples of practices that have suffered due to a lack of audits and the biases that can occur in internal reviews. The discussion also touches on the role of compliance in healthcare and the upcoming topic of prior authorizations. Takeaways Many practices have never conducted an audit of their coding and billing. Internal audits can be biased and may not capture all issues. External audits provide an objective perspective on compliance. Providers often make assumptions about documentation that can lead to errors. The Department of Justice emphasizes independence in auditing practices. Training and education are crucial for coding staff. Practices can lose significant revenue due to improper billing. Compliance plans should include prior authorization processes. Auditing is essential for identifying fraud and ensuring compliance. Investing in audits can save practices money in the long run.
