Kev and Randy take to the mics once a week to talk about a song from the catalogue of the enigmatic, brilliant, and sometimes flawed rock legends Queen. Each week a song will be chosen at random so that the boys won't know what track they'll be reviewing. Kev comes into the podcast as a Queen afficionado, while Randy is a more casual fan, but has a huge wealth of knowledge about recording, performing, and music in general. At the end of each episode, both will either upvote or downvote the song and we'll take to social media to see what the listeners think! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Ahhhh g'day mate! We're heading down under for one of Australia's finest. When Queen told us we had to look out for the planet, we really weren't fans of being preached at by rocks stars, so how will we find this politically-charged chart topper? We get another question in our #AskUsAnything channel from Barry and there's a little bit of Britney involved.... what a time to be alive! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "How do we sleep while our beds are burning?", or possibly, "Get out of the building you idiot, your bed is on fire!"The twelfth episode in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers a song submitted by the marvellous Mocca Smith and is the song that pushed Midnight Oil into the global consciousness; "Beds Are Burning".The poem, titled "Tonic" is by a fantastic fella Kev served with in the military, named Paul Cather, who performs poetry under the name BAMPOeT. Randy is incensed about the hotels in Weyburn and their attitude to towel management. He's upset about the levels of snow on the ground in Weyburn and goddamn it he's blaming Corey Morrissette for all of it! Kev's buzzing off the back of a personal best night at bowling! Our pal Barry is back with another question for us! So we answered that question. Because we're really not rude men! Also fuck Gart Brooks! And Limp Bizkit can definitely go fuck themselves. And not in the nice way like how we say it to you guys!If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Looks like flashing light" or possibly, "Sounds like Brian wanking with his wrong hand!"Today's episode looks at a... well I guess it's technically.... a song....? It's one of the offcuts from The Miracle, so you can imagine how great it is. It's time for some "Chinese Torture"NOTE: Skip forward to 26:15 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The poem at the end of the podcast is "Napoleon's Retreat from Wigan" by the inimitable Mike Harding. Hear ye! Hear ye! Listen you lot! Listen you lot! We've got another episode for you - as you can tell because you're reading this. There's a bit more jibber jabber up front than usual, but it's all very information, very well thought out, and completely planned, so don't skip any of it, OK? If you skip the first twenty odd minutes you'll miss out on a secret to success that could change your life, the lives of your children, the lives of your children's children, the lives of you children's children's children, and so on and so forth, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. And you wouldn't want that, would you?If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Neptune of the seas" or possibly, "Is there enough time for peace?"Today's episode looks at another Freddie classic and anchor of the Sheer Heart Attack medley, "LIly of the Valley"NOTE: Skip forward to 23:45 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song at the end is on of Kev's titled, simply, "America". Seems somewhat appropriate at the moment... https://youtu.be/lmPOZ6ZE090Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Facebook, Bluesky, and Discord! Tack piano, thimbles, vocals toto loco, thieving magpies, Yamaha C7s, weather reports, and NO BRIAN MAY! That's what's in store for you this week and also Kev and Randy field questions from Barry John Williams aka Alice's Dad, and our good pal Ruddy "Mike is my Dad" Rutherford, who both want to know what our inside leg measurement is and where to find the best scotch eggs in Wimbourne for some reason... (OK I may be lying about the last part). Get this in your ears, now!If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Inland disunite" or possibly "One of the best songs of all time"Today's episode looks at one of the Queeniest of all Queen songs and the track that gave our podcast it's name! That's right, it's time for "Seaside Rendevouz"!NOTE: Skip forward to 16:23 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song at the end is Randy's answer to the recent US aggression towards Canada. Ballast Woods. Flin Flon. Minequakes. Average athleticism. Consensual Minotaurs. Max Martin. Pink. Fifth members of Queen. It's all going on in this week's episode along with some rather excellent original R&B from Kev! Humpt Bong indeed... what a ridiculous band name! It's a long one folks, but it's the longest song we've covered to date by a good couple of minutes, so y'know! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "What do you call a Fish with no eyes?", or possibly, "Fsh...."The eleventh episode in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers a song submitted by our pal Tom Boje and is a song that Kev knows very well; the title track from Marillion's 1983 debut record, "Script for a Jester's Tear".If you want to get involved in the Kofi Klub, you can make a donation here: https://ko-fi.com/seasidepodreview and let us know which song you want us to add to the wheel! Well that's The Miracle all wrapped up isn't it! I can't say that I'm sorry to see the back of it if I'm being completely honest. We've spun all ten tracks from this album now and not a single one from Flash! The wheel hates nice things. We get into a discussion about real instruments vs synthstruments again and Barry John Williams poses a couple of questions for us to chew on at the end of the episode, including a good one about the use of music in commercials. If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “A little rain must fall” or possibly “It's pissing down out here. You do know that, don't you?”Today's episode looks at one of those nerve-wracking things in the Queeniverse, a collaboration between John and Freddie. This one's "Rain Must Fall" from "The Miracle".NOTE: Skip forward to 22:28 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song at the end of the episode is the brilliant No Matter What (Always Together) by Absofunkinlutely, with the Cardinal in full flight and his pal Oral Fuentes abley assissting! Ten songs down on News of the World and only one to go after this week's episode! There's no Freddie. We're Freddieless. Bereft of Fred. There is a death, an absence, verily a Freddie-sized vacuum on this song. So, the question needs to be answered, will that dickhead Randy champion or dust it??? You're just gonna have to wait to find out I guess! We had a great little question, from our pal Dan Flett, about how hard it is to write lyrics without music or music without lyrics, a la Elton John and Bernie Taupin, so we get into that at the end of this week's show.If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Napping on the pavement" or possibly, "City boy with trumpet sleeps rough!"Today's episode looks at another Brian song and one that he takes lead vocals on, in that dark, bleak Freddie-less void! It's "Sleeping on the Sidewalk" from "News of the World"!NOTE: Skip forward to 20:30 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song at the end of the episode is a little bit of bespoke noodling especially for this episode from the mind and fingers of The Cardinal, Randy Woods. Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Facebook, Bluesky, and Discord! It's all kicking off! We've been bollocked by one of our listeners for not knowing enough about Marc Martel. We feel scolded and recalcitrant and we won't let it happen again. The next time we cover a Marc Martel song, we'll give a much more comprehensive bio on him! We'll even try to track down his mom to ask some very searching questions about Marc's teenage bedroom habits! Also, there seems to a mutiny brewing in the Scottish highlands as the otherwise mellow and decent Ruddy Rutherford seems to be planning an insurrection of sorts with a crew of ne'er do wells and malcontents! Oh - and we talked about Queen for a bit.If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "The night comes down every night Bri" or possibly, "The song is brill!"Today's episode looks at a song that predates the Trident sessions, Brian's "The Night Comes Down"NOTE: Skip forward to 19:16 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song at the end of the episode is a little bit of bespoke noodling especially for this episode from the mind and fingers of The Cardinal, Randy Woods. Wait, wait, wait! It's not Christmas! What the heck Chappers! We're delving into the world of Marc Martel and his exceptional voice this week with the opening song from 2009's album of the same name. Is there any festive spirit left in March for the boys? Tune in to find out!If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "How Many Kings", or possibly, "Zero or One. Episode 113 wherein Kev discovers that he has a pretty valuable 7 incher on his hands. ON his hands, not in his hands. Get yer minds out of the gutter. That's later..... Anyway, there's all the usual shenanigans from all the usual suspects and we just have to keep winning pucks in the corners and getting shots to the net and if we just execute the game plan and give our goalie a chance, I'm sure we'll sports better than the other team sportses and emerge victorious! It's been a long day, this is all I've got.If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “There's no living in my life any more” or possibly “Queen forever more!”Today's episode looks at a Freddie's soaringly beautiful interlude on Side Black of Queen II, "Nevermore"NOTE: Skip forward to 21:48 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song at the end of the episode is the lead track from Randy Woods Band's second album. If anyone is looking for Christmas gift ideas for The Cardinal, he'd love a 1967 Gretsch White Falcon. Or, if you have a way of acquiring one, one of Jimi Hendrix's Strats. And if you want to start receiving these episodes by tape cassette, what in the hell is wrong with you? (But, Kev is somewhat serious about doing a limited run!) We talk about wandering around Belfast armed, why cold is sometimes just cold, and how exactly did Queen write such a banger with barely any guitar involvement! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “I'm having such a good time”, or possibly, “I'm having a ball”Today's episode looks at a Freddie song that has been streamed over 2 billion times on Spotify and isn't Bohemian Rhapsody; "Don't Stop Me Now"NOTE: Skip forward to 21:48 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song at the end of the episode is the utterly brilliant "Disenfranchised You" from Randy Woods Band's debut album. Did you know that Randy went to hitman school? How about the fact that Kev feels that consistency is key when it comes to being an asshole. We also discuss what type of music a psychopath might listen to and what music we've been listening to other than Queen. The Cardinal is complaining about football again and Kev is frankly getting a little tired of his whining! I don't know if this partnership is going to last!If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "This song is brill" or possibly, "Hitman school"Today's episode looks at a Freddie song that was assisted by Brian and John and taken from the Innuendo album; "The Hitman"NOTE: Skip forward to 23:47 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song at the end of the episode is a very rough mix of Kev, his brother Dan, and his Dad, John, playing a White Stripes song back in 2016. It was recorded remotely and then shoved into Dropbox to mix. Very badly. This one should probably go to the Cardinal at some point to be reworked... but anyway, it's a bit of lo-fi fun and it's titled "Effect and Cause" and you can find it here : https://youtu.be/SRRD-m43xrgIf you want to listen to the song The Delegator's brilliant cover of Nowhere to Run you can find it here: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=E3p7yDec38o and if you want to watch the clip Kev was talking about of Mike Portnoy playing Shake It Off, you'll find that here: https://youtu.be/cHl_gsd0OR0Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Facebook, Bluesky, and Discord! You know that saying "Go big or go home"? What if you were to do both? Well, that's what Queen attempted with the final track on The Miracle. They fired up the old Kurzweil, made Roger play a real drum kit and, if you can believe it, actually sat in a room as a band and recorded this one together. One of our listeners really sticks the boot in, so we return it in kind, and Randy is pondering an SPR move into the political sphere. It's not a good idea. At all. Plus, Ruddy has a question for us and we think you'll like it!If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Not sure how I feel about the old Kurzweil" or possibly, "I hope Freddie thought it was worth it"Today's episode looks at the final track on The Miracle, with Freddie wondering, "Was It All Worth It".NOTE: Skip forward to 21:54 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is taken from UK show, The Last Leg and features Alex Horne and The Horne Section singing a soulful, nostalgic song about the simple country life. We're gonna test the theory that you guys will listen to us talk about anything..... over lunch.Episode one is recorded on location at the rough and ready (and perfectly cromulent) Amigos Cantina at 806 Dufferin Ave, Saskatoon. Tex Mex was eaten, craft beer was consumed, and we set the world mainly to rights! It was bitterly, bitterly cold the day we went so being inside with warm food and warm company was a real blessing! Chappperrrrzzzzzzzz!!!!!Look, we're not gonna tell you how to live your lives, but really, if you're watching a sport that needs music to be played all the way through as a distraction, is this a good use of your time? Well. Is it? Randy's back from the desert, Kev's in from the cold, Roger's ready for a night on the town, and Bri has his stank knob dialled up to ten. The late great Tom Petty once said “I hate to generalize on a whole genre of music, but it does seem to be missing that magic element that it used to have.” Well, sometimes you just gotta shake things up and when the old bop is getting tired and needs a rest, you know what you gotta do. Get your leathers on bryl creme up that hair and flip a quarter into the jukebox, cos we're talkin' Queen! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Modern Times Rock n Roll" or possibly "Oldy timey washboard and fiddle"Today's episode looks at Roger's first contribution to Queen, "Modern Times Rock 'n' Roll".NOTE: Skip forward to 16:47 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is "Wild Iris Dragon Woman" from Absofunkinlutely's debut album, Funk Shui. Well, what were the chances of that? We spun two Struts songs in a row! Kev and Randy are starting to suspect they've been duped into producing a Young and Dangerous Podcast! Also, there's a lot more talk about Kev's dental regime than you might have expected...If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Young and Dangerous", or possibly, "Adult and Cautious".The ninth episode in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers another song from The Struts 2018 album, "Young and Dangerous". Two in a row!!! This week we're covering the melancholic ballad "Somebody New", courtesy of our pal Midwife Nicki. There is no tumescence. There is just floppy. HEY! It's not what you think! Look, it'll make a lot more sense once you listen to the episode... Look, all I was saying was that the chef made a meal a certain way so before you start slathering it with all sorts of condiments, maybe give it a quick taste and see if what the chef did was actually pretty fucking good, OK?!?! Geez! You wouldn't go adding lines to Shakespear now would you!If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "This song needs life support" or possibly, "That made my ears not care"Today's episode looks at a Deacy song that was a B Side during the Miracle sessions and was resurrected during the Made In Heaven sessions. We don't know why. Your guess is as good as ours!NOTE: Skip forward to 20:47 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is "My Little Buttercup" from the movie "Three Amigos!" and you can find it here: https://youtu.be/T6wetejGqh0Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Facebook, and Discord! The increase of disorder or entropy is what distinguishes the past from the future, giving a direction to time. That's according to noted layabout and robot impersonator Stephen Hawking. So I wouldn't take any advice from that guy! You know who does know about time though? Brian Harold May, that's who! Set your watches and dust off the old sundial, cos we're talkin' Queen! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “Hurry, Hurry, Hurry, Hurry”, or possibly, “You're Dead!”Today's episode looks at Brian's blazing rocker that everyone else hated and refused to play live; "Dead On Time", the jazziest song on Jazz!NOTE: Skip forward to 15:15 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is "Blame Shifter" by Randy Woods Band. Thank fuck it's Boxing Day! How's everyone doing? Mince pies all hoovered up by the dog? Grandma not speaking to Auntie Jan because of the incident with the Christmas crackers? How about them Jets??? Look, it's that time of year. You can overindulge, listen to shitty music, and just damn well enjoy yourself! That's what we've been doing this Christmastime, even if Randy isn't at all convinced about the legitimacy of that word! We pick our top five Christmas songs - and there's NO OVERLAP - and talk about songs we're not as keen on... 2024 has been a monumental year for us and we're grateful that you've all come along with us on this wild, wild ride. We'd like to sincerely and honestly say, from the bottom of our hearts, with no reservation, hesitation, or qualms of any type, to please, go fuck yourselves. Man, the last time I had to do this intro, we were talking about Pain Is So Close To Please! Why am I getting the non-rockers from A Kind of Magic all of a sudden? Oh well, it's all still Queen, right? You have to love everything to call yourself a real fan. Hey I don't make the rules, that's what the gatekeepers decided! Wanna smash that gate down with us? Cool. We're talkin' Queen! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Friends Will Be Friends Will Be Friends", or possibly "Friends don't let Friends listen to this pish!"Today's episode looks at the last track on Side A of "A Kind Of Magic" That's right folks, we had to spin it some time and we've spun it today. We're back baby! Now, let's see if we can remember how this works... we have to spin a donut, or a coin, or something like that. We have to pull up wikileaks, and talk about the Queen, then ask a bunch of Poles what they think of the song we just listened to that the Queen sang... Hmm, this sounds ridiculous even by our standards. Oh well, what could possibly go wrong. Old Johnny Two Hats and his trusty sidekick are back to guide you through the dazzlingly eclectic catalogue of Queen (the band, not the decomposing monarch...)If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "One leg? No worries, you're fine", or possibly "Go fuck yourself Norm Sheffield!"Today's episode looks at a classic Queen opener. It's the mean, the moody, the magnificent "Death on Two Legs" from 1975's titanic "A Night at the Opera". Dig it! We finally spun up a Sarah Chapman song and it was one that neither Kev nor Randy had heard before. We listened to the recess monkeys, we chatted about Chiliwack, Randy discovered a fashion connection between Luke Spiller and Freddie Mercury and we had a good old time listening to some loud, sweaty rack and roll! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Don't bore us", or possibly, "Get to the chorus".The eighth episode in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers the last single from The Struts 2018 album, "Young and Dangerous", the short and schnappy "In Love With a Camera". Yo! We're back with another Kofi ep peepils! It's a strange one. Like, really quite strange. It's by a band we knew nothing about and still know very little about! This week's song was requested by David A Wilson, who let me know in advance that it was a weird song! Did I mention that this one is a little off-kilter?If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Angry kitty, mad kitty, little ball of hate", or possibly, "Like a big old baby".The seventh episode in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers "Held", the first single from 1999's "Knock Knock", by SMOG. This is the last episode we recorded while the Cardinal was in Winnipeg a few weeks back and concludes the epic Randy-does-his-laundry-during-the-pod narrative trilogy! This week's song was requested by Chrissy AKA The Waters of Love! Randy was really familiar with the song and Kev was pretty sure he'd never heard it, so how will this one shake out???If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "I don't know why sometimes I get frightened" or possibly, "Spiders. "My baby what? Does me? Are you sure? Good? She does me good you say? Well, that doesn't sound awful. Wait, what, that's the lyrics of the new song???? That doesn't sound great mate. Can we maybe run it by Bri and Rog and see what... OK OK. Yeh, I can probably play some sort of bassline to this. We're gonna just use this drum loop as a bed track until Rog comes.... oh? Really? I mean, he's coming in this afternoon, he could.... OK Fred. Your call!" If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “My baby does me” or possibly, “Turn it down a bit please!”Today's episode looks at the erm... the... it's... look... well... it's "My Baby Does Me" from "The Miracle" OK. It was gonna come up some time, we'll just get through it and move on.NOTE: Skip forward to 16:43 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is "Faded American" by Randy Woods Band and you can find it here: https://youtu.be/jjT1fsuj7yEThanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Facebook, and Discord! This one was recorded while the Cardinal was in Winnipeg a few weeks back and Kev is sick, so we figured we'd drop this one to keep you entertained (for a given value of entertainment obviously) This week's song was requested by Matt Greenham! Neither Kev nor Randy really know what metalcore is and it's safe to say that this one isn't in their typical listening rotation, but will they champion or dust this one?If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Parkway to Heaven?" or possibly, "Until I Die".The fifth episode in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers the title track from Parkway Drive's 2022 release, "Darker Still". Episode One Hundred? Who'd have ever imagined we'd get this far? Who would ever have imagined that Randy would still be willing to sit down and listen to Kev fanboy about Queen every week? Who'd have ever thought that a man with a peanut for a brain and a face painted with deck stain would have a realistic chance of being President of the US. Again. Well, we'll take it! Except the last bit. Fuck that guy! This week it's a doozy and you know we're gonna be talking Live Killers! If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Are you not entertained" or possibly, "I'll use any device"Today's episode looks at the bombastic, fantastic, orgasmic "Let Me Entertain You", which closes out Side A of 1978's "Jazz".NOTE: Skip forward to 25:42 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is "No Good (For You)" by Kev Brown You can find it here! https://youtu.be/XvFVXET1qRoThanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter, Facebook, and Discord! Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost… If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "The humans are dead" or possibly, "It's heartbeat is timeshare..."Today's episode looks at "Machines (or 'Back to Humans')", the bombastic Taylor/May collaboration from 1984's "The Works".NOTE: Skip forward to 19:09 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is "Humble Pie" (not cake) by Absofunkinlutely. "Hey guys, I've been working on tracks for a potential solo album and came up with this idea. Whaddya think?!" "Well, Freddie wrote a cat song, Rog' is on about cars again, and I don't really have anything that I'm super pumped about, so I guess we could try it........" said John. Probably. Well, maybe. Actually, almost certainly not. But it's a strange one to include on a Queen album and Kev and Randy were pretty much on exactly the same page with this one! If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "I can live without you" or possibly "Why can't we live without you? I need more! Gimme more!"Today's episode looks at another track from Innuendo that was originally intended to be a Brian May solo song, "I Can't Live With You"NOTE: Skip forward to 14:22 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end of the episode is a work in progress by the Cardinal titled "Drumming for Jesus"!If you want to hear The War and Treaty (and you really ought to), check this out: https://youtu.be/k4blAHy2lUkAlso, go check out our merch store, here! https://tinyurl.com/2e23nkk6Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter, Facebook, and Discord! How much Brown would a Leroy Brown if a Leroy could brown Brown? Fucked if I know and to be honest, I don't think it's overly relevant to this week's episode. There's a whole lot of Jim Croce, because Kev loves him and Kev does the edit, so Kev gets to put Jim Croce in there! Wanna argue? Double bass, tack piano, harmonized train whistles, pitch correction, and a whole hell of a lot of fun. It's all here, so come and get it! If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Put a shotgun to his head" or possibly "Why can't we get along?"Today's episode looks at a Freddie's sizzling first foray into swing, "Bring Back That Leroy Brown" from 1974's "Sheer Heart Attack".NOTE: Skip forward to 16:48 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end is "Hijack The Show" taken from "Residential Gas Leak", the second release by Randy's former band, Absofunkinlutely. The Cardinal is off making money to support his family again. What a douche! Anyway, luckily we had some Kofi eps recorded so we're giving you a band neither of us had heard and their one-hit-wonder song that charted in the UK and Australia. This week's song was requested by Alan Dudeney! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Shit stains on the ceiling, the windowpanes are nice..." or possibly, "they're so discreet and I know only too well". The fourth episode in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers the title track from Voyager's (not that one Randy) 1979 release "Halfway Hotel". It's pop-y, it's piano driven, and the boys were unanimous in their verdict on this one!If you want to get involved in the Kofi Klub, you can make a donation here: https://ko-fi.com/seasidepodreview and let us know which song you want us to add to the wheel! Tony Robbins once said that “The Secret of success is learning how to use pain and pleasure instead of having pain and pleasure use you. If you can do that, you're in control of your life. If you don't, life controls you.” Then again, Tony Robbins is a gigantic cock womble, so I wouldn't listen to a damn thing the disingenuous clagnut says. Listen to us instead. We're talkin' Queen! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “All I wanted was to start a new relation” or possibly “All I wanted was to flip a Kind of Magic to Side B”.Today's episode looks at a Brian riff that Freddie and John tried to write a Motown song around; "Pain Is So Close to Pleasure", from 1986's "A Kind of Magic".NOTE: Skip forward to 14:57 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end is "When I'm Gone" taken from the second release by Randy's former band, Absofunkinlutely. As a huge thank you to the people who have very generously donated some of their hard earned scratch to us over on our Ko-Fi account, we came up with the idea of letting people give us non-Queen songs to talk about and vote on. This week's song was requested by Michele Stagman-Kurlander. If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "I'm just like Anne Frank" or possibly, "like Indiana Jones".The third episode in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers the lead track from Bob Dylan's 2020 release "Rough and Rowdy Ways", the tongue-in-cheek, yet playfully introspective, "I Contain Multitudes".If you want to get involved in the Kofi Klub, you can make a donation here: https://ko-fi.com/seasidepodreview and let us know which song you want us to add to the wheel! Once upon a time, there was a guitarist named Mick Mars. He practiced every day. He practiced every night. He got so good that a famous musician named David invited him to be one of the spiders from Mars. After recording and touring for years with the Thin Ziggy Starman, he wanted to challenge himself more musically, so he joined the highly sophisticated intellectual rockers, Mötley Crüe, who didn't have a shit name or a shit singer and a shit drummer. Mick became the most succesful guitar player in the world. Then he died. The end. According to Kev. If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Forget regrets" or possibly, "Hey guys, check out this fill!"Today's episode looks at the only Roger composition featured on Queen II, an ode to a dysfunctional maternal relationship, "The Loser in the End"NOTE: Skip forward to 16:43 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The music at the end is "Charisma Free" taken from Randy Woods Band's debut record. You grow up, go to school, study hard, pass your exams, go to college, take some more exams, work hard some more, you get a job, earn a bunch of money and save as much as can and eventually you buy a house, you fill it with all the things you want that make your life as comfortable as possible and you meet a girl, she steals your heart, you start a family, and you accumulate a whole bunch of new stuff. Then after all this work and all this accumulation, she wants to drag you off "camping" to go live in the fucking woods and live like a goddamn Neanderthal for no fucking good reason!!! Episode 92 in the books already? Are you serious? We've covered more songs than we have left and the only big questions we have left to answer in the second half of the pod are; will Randy's hat finally be fucked? How much is his oath going to suffer? And is he quite as committed to the church of Go Fuck Yourself as he was in the beginning? If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “I get ever so lonely from time to time”, or possibly, “Shorter of breath, one day closer to death!”Today's episode looks at Freddie's almost-solo tour-de-force from Queen's fifth album, the hauntingly beautiful "You Take My Breath Away"NOTE: Skip forward to 8:56 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter, Facebook, and BlueSky! It's time to recap the next block of forty songs we've covered! Is Kev going lean heavily 70s? Will Randy pick anything from Queen 2? There's a public service announcement about the perils of dying your own hair, a slight twist on the Tweet of the Week, a needless discussion of Randy's "meaty" hair, oh, and we pick our favourite ten songs form the last batch of forty we've covered! It's six and a half minutes long. It's blues rock. It's a Brian May tune. The Cardinal is gonna hate it. Right? Well, maybe, but you never know with that guy. Sometimes he votes peculiarly (which is a hard word to say when you're hammered!) We get into bass lines, waistlines, and wastes of time in this episode and we hope you enjoy coming along with us for the ride. One person will definitely be happy with this one as they manifested it in our Discord community! If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Blues Rock Queen" or possibly "So let the fire take our bodies this night. So late. Let the waters take our guilt in the tide"Today's episode looks at Brian's three-act play about infidelity and the moral conundrums it poses; "It's Late", from Queen's titanic sixth album, "News of the World"NOTE: Skip forward to 15:13 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song featured at the end of this week's episode is "Stolen", from the the fabulous self-titled album from Firing at the Sky. Sixty five professional female models, sixty five bicycle seats that Halfords wouldn't accept when returned, 36 repetitions of the word bicycle. Seventy eight live performances, one hundred and one weeks on global charts, over one million units sold in the US alone and one Rolling Stone reporter sickened and outraged. Not bad for a three minute pop song featuring four musical geniuses credited with playing bicycle bells. That's Jazz!If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “Everyone likes boobs” or possibly, “I want to ride my bike”Today's episode looks at the gloriously camp end-of-the-pier lark, "Bicycle Race" from the equally eclectic and bewildering "Jazz"NOTE: Skip forward to 13:42 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song featured at the end of this week's episode is Kev's Dear John letter to the USA, "America". But enough about Randy, I'm going to make him blush! Settle down with your best cat, your best whiskey and your best mittens and get ready for some Queen, cos that's what we're talkin' about! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “Funny how buried the vocals are” or “The spleen isn't the sexiest organ, but the body isn't complete without it”Today's episode looks at "Funny How Love Is"; the gloriously glammy halfway house between the behemoth "March of the Black Queen" and the equally seismic "Seven Seas of Rhye".NOTE: Skip forward to 16:45 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song featured at the end of this week's episode is a devilishly funky little tune called "Kind of Love" by Randy's old band Absofunkinlutely. An interesting fact about Saudi Arabia for you is that Oil was first struck there in March 1938, in the Dammam Oilfield. In Riyadh, around 100 camels per day are sold, and it's home to the world's largest sandy desert. Oh, also, they murder journalists in cold blood and are surruptitiously buying up sports franchises all over the world to distract us from the fact. Never mind eh, let's talk some Queen! If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Who said that my party was all over?" or possibly "Get off my fucking boat!"Today's episode looks at the continuation of the part with the second song on "The Miracle", "Khashoggi's Ship".NOTE: Skip forward to 14:07 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song featured at the end of this week's episode is God Save the Queen, Pt 3 bu Randy's old band Absofunkinlutely. It's not the A side and it's not the C side, well it's the seaside as in all one word s e a… you get what I'm saying. It's the B SIDE pod review. We're not digging into the main catalogue today because Randy's off working on some or other big budget Hollywood production and rubbing shoulders with the Scorseses of the world, but we're going deep, and we're still sittin around talking about Queen! If Kevin were to title this episode, he'd probably call it “Summon the Kraken!” or possibly, “Geez, this didn't get finished for The Miracle and My Baby Does Me did?”Today's episode looks at Brian's half finished doodle "Water" which was included on "The Miracle Collector's Edition"NOTE: Skip forward to 8:37 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song featured at the end of this week's episode is Bottom End Machine by RandyWoods Band. White men have a lot to answer for. Now don't get all Jordan Peterson on me and say "NOT ALL WHITE MEN!" No, not all, but damn well enough! And certainly historically. But is it a good idea for rock stars to tackle serious subjects? And how does Brian do with this one? It's back to back Bri and this week's episode is full of Stampeders and Carneys. Kev also gives an update on the upcoming Queen World Cup!If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Don't you see the light behing your blackened skies" or possibly "White man builds a big fire and sits far way. Native man builds a small fire and sits close"Today's episode means we've now covered half of A Day At The Races. Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, I know you're my sister, but I'm looking at you... You could sort of condense the lyrics in this one down to that sentence. Nylon strings, epic bass, and a soulful piano make up the bones of this song, but its muscle comes from the brilliance of Brian's voice and guitar work. There's a change in the format and the boys are ready to rock. There were five different manifestations from this week's album, so the wheel spun up none of them!If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "How come you behave this way" or possibly, "Maybe Bri's parents shoulda got the boy a dog"Today's episode covers our fourth track from The Game, Brian's sinister lamentation, "Sail Away Sweet Sister"NOTE: Skip forward to 23:52 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song featured at the end of this week's episode is Bode's Galaxy, by Randy's former band, Absofunkinlutely. In materials science, quenching is the rapid cooling of a workpiece in water, gas, oil, polymer, air, or other fluids to obtain certain material properties. A type of heat treating, quenching prevents undesired low-temperature processes, such as phase transformations, from occurring. It does this by reducing the window of time during which these undesired reactions are both thermodynamically favorable and kinetically accessible; for instance, quenching can reduce the crystal grain size of both metallic and plastic materials, increasing their hardness. All that has fuck all to do with this week's episode. If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "There's nothing burning!" or possibly "Why didn't Rog' put gong on this track?"Today's episode covers the side two opener to Hot Space, Brian's gun-law-hoo-haw, "Put Out the Fire"NOTE: Skip forward to 11:58 if wanna get straight into the manifestations and wheel spin. The song featured at the end of this week's episode is Bode's Galaxy, by Randy's former band, Absofunkinlutely. Today's episode covers the big cahuna. The monster. The behemoth. None more Queen. The song that didn't just put Queen on the map, but also tore the map up into tiny little shreds and force fed the pieces to an ungrateful music press who just didn't get it."Unfortunately, Queen's lyrics are not the stuff of sonnets." - TIME magazine"...a brazen hodgepodge..." - Rolling Stone"A superficially impressive pastiche of incongruous musical styles..." - Melody Maker"It has no immediate selling point whatsoever" - Record Mirror"They sound extremely self-important" - NME"The critics can go fuck themselves" - Cardinal WoodsIf Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Nothing really matters" or possibly, "I wonder who played gong on this track?"It's Bo Rhap time.NOTES: Skip forward to 38:47 if you want to skip the preamble. The song featured at the end of the episode is "Hint of Grey" written and recorded by our very own Ian Winick in his former duo, John Loves Julie. This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Is life real? Can you breastfeed yourself? And what are those stains on your pillow? If I were to title this episode, I'd probably call it “Nothing is Real” or possibly “The milky boobs are on me!”.Today's episode covers Freddies ode to the fallen Beatle, "Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)".NOTES: Skip forward to 30:39 if wanna get straight into the manifestations from our dynamic duo and their dastardly discordants!
