As unscrupulous actors continue to impersonate government agencies and target unknowing people with texts about unpaid tolls, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel this week reissued a consumer alert. With that in mind, this week's edition of the Talking Michigan Transportation podcast is a reprise of a conversation in June with J. Michael Skiba, also known as “Dr. Fraud,” a national expert on scams, like those proliferating in Michigan and other states, where text messages tell people they have unpaid road tolls. Skiba is department chair at Colorado State University Global, where he oversees the Criminal Justice Department, including specializations in fraud, financial crime and cybercrime. He discusses the psychology that prompts so many victims of online fraud to engage with scammers on smishing attempts. If you've been targeted, the FCC offers many tips. In April, the Michigan Department of Transportation released a video of Director Bradley C. Wieferich urging people not to respond to the texts.

A severe shortage of seats and difficult tests result in about 25,000 Indians flying abroad to get a medical degree. The problems begin afresh when they return. Instead of warm welcomes, graduates are met with screening tests with high failure rates, tedious registration procedures and even unpaid internships. But, the thing is: India needs these doctors, and badly. For every 1260 people, we have only 1 doctor–a stark departure from the WHO recommended 1:1000 ratio. However, bureaucratic mazes and a lack of infrastructural support put these young doctors in a difficult position.Tune in.Daybreak is produced from the newsroom of The Ken, India's first subscriber-only business news platform. Jennifer and Jacques discuss the federal government's recent Economic Reform Roundtable, commonly known as the 'productivity roundtable'.They discuss where it went wrong - though a good idea in principle, including assumptions that cutting costs for big business (e.g. via lower tax and regulation) will necessarily lead to higher productivity and not just bigger profits. The hosts unpick the notion of productivity itself, as measured by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which gives no or little value to most caring work and upaid environment protection. Finally they criticise the centrist push of our political leaders to do nothing meaningful.ReferencesRichard Denniss (2025) Dead Centre: How political pragmatism is killing us Australia Institute - Vantage Point Emma Holten (2025) Deficit: how feminist economics can change our world London: WH Allen - Penguin/Random

The speakers in the episode are AI generated and frankly sound great to listen to. Enjoy! What happens when the line between your work and personal life blurs beyond recognition? Five IT professionals at NYU Langone Health System are taking a stand in a legal battle that resonates with countless workers who've found themselves checking emails after hours or staying late without additional compensation. The case centers on a fundamental question: when should technical support professionals receive overtime pay? The plaintiffs—specialists with titles like System Analyst and Desktop Support Technician—claim they routinely worked 42-55 hours weekly without overtime compensation because NYU Langone incorrectly classified them as exempt employees. They argue their primary duties involved routine troubleshooting, ticket management, and technical assistance that lacked the independent judgment typically required for overtime exemption, despite their professional-sounding titles.NYU Langone's vigorous defense includes challenging whether they even fall under federal wage law jurisdiction while simultaneously claiming the employees properly qualified for various exemptions. This highlights how contested the boundaries have become between exempt and non-exempt work in our digital age. Recently, the court conditionally certified a collective action, allowing other similarly situated IT support staff to join the lawsuit—a significant milestone, though not the final word. The implications reach far beyond healthcare IT departments. As technology transforms workplace expectations and responsibilities, many professionals find themselves wondering if their classification accurately reflects their actual duties. This case may help clarify where modern labor law draws the line between work deserving overtime pay and genuinely exempt professional roles. Whether you're questioning your own classification or seeking to understand evolving employment rights, this legal battle offers valuable insights into the changing nature of work and compensation in today's increasingly connected world. This Day in Legal History: First SCOTUS DecisionOn August 11, 1792, the United States Supreme Court issued its first reported decision in Georgia v. Brailsford. The case arose from the complex aftermath of the Revolutionary War, when questions about debts owed to British creditors came before the new federal judiciary. The State of Georgia had enacted laws seizing debts owed to British subjects, while the 1783 Treaty of Paris required those debts to be honored. The dispute involved a British creditor, Samuel Brailsford, seeking repayment from a Georgia resident. Georgia argued that its confiscation laws extinguished the debt, but the Court was faced with balancing state statutes against treaty obligations. In its decision, the Court reaffirmed that treaties made under the authority of the United States were binding on the states, even when they conflicted with local laws. This early opinion helped cement the principle of federal supremacy in foreign affairs and treaty enforcement. It also demonstrated the Court's willingness to decide politically sensitive disputes involving state sovereignty. The ruling, authored before the modern opinion-writing style developed, was short and straightforward, focusing narrowly on the facts and legal issue. It set an early precedent for judicial interpretation of the Constitution's Supremacy Clause. Georgia v. Brailsford thus marked the Court's entry into shaping the balance between state power and federal authority. The case also foreshadowed the judiciary's role in resolving conflicts between domestic law and international agreements. While not as well-known as later landmark cases, its legacy lies in establishing the Court as a neutral arbiter in disputes implicating both constitutional structure and international commitments.President Donald Trump is expected to nominate David Rosner, a Democrat currently serving on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), as its next chair. The agency oversees decisions on natural gas export facilities and major power infrastructure, making it central to Trump's energy agenda. Rosner, appointed to FERC by President Joe Biden, previously worked for former Senator Joe Manchin, who was known for supporting coal and gas interests. White House officials say Rosner aligns with Trump's priorities, despite his party affiliation. FERC was a flashpoint during Trump's first term, when his appointees attempted—but failed—to push policies favoring fossil fuel power generation. Today, surging energy demand from data centers has renewed attention on expanding cheap power sources. In July, the country's largest electric grid saw record power auction revenues of $16.1 billion, highlighting the strain on supply. Rosner's promotion would follow the departure of Republican Mark Christie as chair, signaling a bipartisan leadership shift at the influential regulator.Trump to Tap Democrat to Lead US Agency Overseeing Gas, PowerA closely watched trial began today in San Francisco over President Trump's deployment of National Guard troops to assist immigration raids and manage protests in Los Angeles. California argues the move violates the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which limits the use of the military in civilian law enforcement. The dispute centers on Trump's June order sending 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard members to the city after mass immigration raids sparked unrest. State officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, claim about 2,000 Guard members are still aiding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in raids and restricting civilian movement. The administration denies the troops engaged in law enforcement, saying they were protecting federal property and ICE personnel. The three-day, non-jury trial before U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer could set limits on Trump's authority to deploy the military in U.S. cities. California is also seeking to regain control of its National Guard from federal command. A ruling against the administration could have lasting implications for the president's power to use military forces domestically.Landmark trial kicks off over Trump's use of US military in policing role | ReutersU.S. law firms saw stronger-than-expected business in the second quarter of 2025, with overall demand rising 1.6% from the same period last year and billing rates climbing 7.4%, according to the Thomson Reuters Institute. Clients sought legal guidance on shifting tariffs, regulatory changes, and an unsteady economy, partly fueled by President Trump's trade policies. The growth was uneven—top 100 firms experienced a 0.6% drop in demand, while the next-largest 100 grew 2.6% and midsized firms rose 3.5%, suggesting clients may be opting for lower-cost or more specialized services. Practice area results also varied: litigation demand rose 2%, corporate work 1.3%, mergers and acquisitions 0.3%, while intellectual property fell 1.4%. The industry's Financial Index score hit 55, up four points from Q1, but the report warned of risks ahead as overhead costs climb, collections dip, and productivity lags 1.3% year-over-year. Unpaid bills and write-downs could create further financial pressure if trends persist. Law firms stayed busy in second quarter but uncertainty looms - report | ReutersThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has moved to terminate its labor contract with the union representing 8,000 of its employees, according to the union's president. The action is part of President Trump's broader push to limit collective bargaining rights across federal agencies. Trump's March executive order seeks to remove such rights at more than 30 agencies, including the EPA, and is being challenged in court by unions that argue it violates free speech and bargaining obligations. The EPA says it is acting in compliance with the order, which would make it easier for agencies to discipline or dismiss workers. The move comes as the EPA plans to reduce its workforce by at least 23% and close its scientific research office as part of broader federal downsizing. Unions, including the American Federation of Government Employees, are suing to stop the effort, but a recent federal appeals court decision allowed the administration to proceed with exempting some agencies from negotiating with unions. The union representing EPA employees has pledged a legal response.Trump's environment agency terminates contract with unionized employees | Reuters This is a public episode. A tax expert says there is a concerning trend as businesses owe more and more to Inland Revenue. Businesses owe more than $1.4 billion in unpaid GST and PAYE from the 2025 tax year. Only $66 million of that is from businesses or individuals that are bankrupt or in liquidation. Deloitte Tax Partner Robyn Walker told Mike Hosking the construction sector alone owes about $1 billion. She says it is difficult to say how it stacks up against other industries. New Zealand businesses owe more than $1.4 billion in unpaid GST and PAYE from the 2025 tax year, according to new reports. Of 2025's number, $432.9 million relates to employer activities and $1.047 billion to GST. IRD Customer Segment Manager Tony Morris says this data's in line with what's happening overseas - but it's an area they aim to put more focus on. What does it really mean to be a thought leader? According to publicist Claire Mason, it's not about self-proclaimed titles; it's about consistently delivering valuable, well-crafted insights. True authority is built on substance, not hype. Mason's advice from her recent podcast interview is a must-listen for anyone building their professional brand: Embrace Imposter Syndrome: That feeling of self-doubt is a sign you're pushing your boundaries. Use it as fuel to maintain high standards and keep growing. Prioritize Earned Media: Credibility is earned, not bought. Unpaid editorial coverage in media outlets builds far more trust than any paid ad. Balance AI and Human Content: Use AI tools for routine tasks, but always add your own personal touch. Your unique experiences and insights are the only things an algorithm can't replicate. Building your media presence takes time and persistence. Start small with local publications, and let each win pave the way to bigger opportunities.

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
Can One Use Borrowed Tefillin—And What If They Were Bought on Credit or Unpaid For? Tefillin are holy objects—handwritten, expensive, and often personalized. As a result, situations arise where someone needs to borrow a pair or buy one on credit , and the Halacha must clarify when that's permitted and under what conditions the Tefillin are valid. Can You Borrow Tefillin Without Explicit Permission? According to the Shulhan Aruch (Orah Haim 14), it is generally permissible to borrow Tefillin without asking , as long as: The Tefillin are in a public or communal place , such as a synagogue shelf. The owner is known to be a religious, Torah-observant individual who would be pleased to fulfill the Misva of helping another Jew perform the commandment. This is based on the concept of "Nicha le'le'insah de'te'avid Misva b'mamoneh" —a person is happy for others to fulfill a Misva using his belongings. However: If the Tefillin case is clearly labeled with a note such as "Do not borrow," or if the owner is known to be particular, they may not be used without permission . If the Tefillin are custom-made, unusually expensive, or rare (e.g., very small, lightweight, or adorned), one may not assume permission to borrow them. Are Tefillin Purchased on Credit Kosher to Use? A person who buys Tefillin on credit or with a payment plan —meaning, they took the Tefillin before completing payment—can still use them , and they are halachically valid. However, several points must be observed: The seller must have willingly agreed to this arrangement. There must be no deception or unresolved protest from the seller. If the seller later expresses dissatisfaction or demands the return of the Tefillin due to non-payment, the buyer must stop using them until the matter is resolved. This is because ownership is not fully transferred when there is a dispute over payment. Using Tefillin that one does not fully own—against the will of the seller—is improper. What If the Seller Cannot Be Located Later? If a person purchased Tefillin (even years ago) and later realized: The full payment was never completed, Or they can't remember whether it was ever paid, Or they cannot locate the original seller, Then the person must try to track down the seller , even through friends or family. If all reasonable attempts fail: He should donate the estimated value to a Torah cause or Misva, such as a yeshiva , Tefillin fund , or synagogue in need . This shows good faith effort to settle the financial obligation, and avoids benefiting from a Misva object that may be partially stolen. Summary: You may borrow Tefillin without permission only if the owner would be pleased, and there's no sign or reason to assume otherwise. Tefillin bought on credit are valid if the seller agreed—but must not be used if the seller later protests or withdraws permission. If the seller cannot be found, donate the value to a Torah cause to ensure proper use of the Tefillin.

“The wicked borrow but do not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives.” – Psalm 37:21When someone owes you money and doesn't repay it, emotions can run high—frustration, hurt, and even resentment. Whether it's a friend, family member, or fellow believer, unpaid debt can strain even the strongest relationships. So, how should we respond when repayment never comes? Let's explore that together.Start with CompassionIt's natural to assume the worst when someone avoids repaying a debt. But Scripture calls us to pause and lead with understanding.“Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly.” – Proverbs 14:29The person who owes you might be experiencing genuine hardship, such as job loss, medical emergencies, or family struggles. Begin by asking how they're doing. Show empathy. Offer flexibility, if possible, such as a revised payment plan. This can foster honest dialogue and reflect Christ's love in action. Before confronting the situation, pray. Ask God for wisdom, peace, and soft hearts on both sides. When you enter the conversation with prayerful humility, your response becomes a witness, not just a reaction.Follow Biblical Steps for ConflictIf the debtor is a fellow believer and continues to avoid the issue, Jesus outlines a redemptive process in Matthew 18:Speak privately to them.If unresolved, bring one or two others. If the issue remains unresolved, involve the church leadership. The goal isn't shame—it's restoration. Seek truth and preserve the relationship, creating a path forward instead of building a wall.Should Christians Ever Take Legal Action? In 1 Corinthians 6, Paul warns believers not to sue one another over civil matters, saying, “Why not rather be wronged?” Unity and love matter more than financial recovery. However, this doesn't mean legal action is never appropriate. If fraud, abuse, or serious legal injustice is involved, Romans 13 affirms that civil authorities exist to uphold justice. Seeking legal recourse in these situations may be necessary, especially if livelihoods are at stake. Just be sure your motivation is fairness, not revenge. The Bigger PictureRegardless of the outcome, Jesus commands us to forgive:“Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone…” – Mark 11:25Forgiveness doesn't ignore the debt—it chooses not to hold bitterness. Sometimes it leads to repentance; other times, it simply frees your heart.Unpaid debt is frustrating—but temporary. Relationships, witness, and Christlike character endure. Ask not only, “How can I get this money back?” but “How can I reflect Jesus in this moment?” Generosity and forgiveness point to a Savior who forgave us when we had nothing to repay.Want to Go Deeper? This topic is explored further in our Faithful Steward magazine. I have money saved for a down payment, but I'm unsure about two things. First, should I continue saving for a larger down payment or buy now with the money I have? Second, I want a mortgage, but I would like to know whether I should choose a shorter or longer mortgage term. I'm 54 years old, so I'm thinking about my timeline for paying off the mortgage. My brother and sister had a trust together with three houses. My sister has since passed away, and my brother is still alive. The trust already has money in it, and my brother is thinking about selling one of the houses. I would like to know: Does the money from the house sale have to be returned to the trust, or can my brother keep it?I'm about to start Social Security at my full retirement age in two months. My wife is considering taking Social Security at age 62. My question is about what happens if I pass away before her. If she's already receiving a reduced spousal benefit, will she then get 100% of my benefit at the new reduced amount, or will she be stuck with the same reduced percentage? My wife and I have a local revocable trust with property and investments. We're considering relocating to an Illinois senior living facility. I'm concerned: Will the state have any way to access our money and property?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on Money (Pre-Order)Look At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000.
