IBM has just unveiled its boldest quantum computing roadmap yet: Starling, the first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer—coming in 2029. Capable of running 20,000X more operations than today's quantum machines, Starling could unlock breakthroughs in chemistry, materials science, and optimization.According to IBM, this is not just a pie-in-the-sky roadmap: they actually have the ability to make Starling happen. In this exclusive conversation, I speak with Jerry Chow, IBM Fellow and Director of Quantum Systems, about the engineering breakthroughs that are making this possible ... especially a radically more efficient error correction code and new multi-layered qubit architectures. We cover:- The shift from millions of physical qubits to manageable logical qubits- Why IBM is using quantum low-density parity check (qLDPC) codes- How modular quantum systems (like Kookaburra and Cockatoo) will scale the technology- Real-world quantum-classical hybrid applications already happening today- Why now is the time for developers to start building quantum-native algorithms00:00 Introduction to the Future of Computing01:04 IBM's Jerry Chow01:49 Quantum Supremacy02:47 IBM's Quantum Roadmap04:03 Technological Innovations in Quantum Computing05:59 Challenges and Solutions in Quantum Computing09:40 Quantum Processor Development14:04 Quantum Computing Applications and Future Prospects20:41 Personal Journey in Quantum Computing24:03 Conclusion and Final Thoughts

Every now and then, you meet people who radiate such generosity, such quiet brilliance, that you walk away feeling a little bit better about the world. Chae and Yoora, the couple behind the tiny six-seat Korean restaurantChaein the hills of Cockatoo, are exactly those kinds of people. This is a restaurant where time is the main ingredient. Years go into the ferments, and the big clay jars sitting outside, quietly brewing flavour, take up more than just physical space; they represent a completely different way of thinking about food and business. The intimacy is part of the experience: Chae, calmly plating at the bench, Yoora quietly attentive to everything else. It began humbly, in their Brunswick apartment, with Chae just giving it a go. But beneath that quiet start was a deep well of skill, philosophy and soul. Now, I have a confession. This was actually the second time I sat down to record this episode. The first time, I drove out, I had a beautiful, thoughtful conversation with Chae and Yoora, drove home, and, poof. The recording vanished. Gone. A technical glitch, or maybe just the podcast gods keeping me humble. But Chae, being the gracious human she is, invited me back. And I'm so glad she did, because this chat, take two, feels even more special.

Welcome back to the Proper True Yarn Podcast, where the yarns are big, the laughs are louder, and the true stories? Well, they're as wild as they come. This week, we're joined by the legend himself, Jeff Perot, who's got a stack of tales from the outback—and this one is full of snakes, scares, and a bloody hilarious cockatoo caper.First up, Jeff tells us the story of Fred Waterson and a run-in with a ten-foot black-headed python. Fred's fear of snakes is no match for Jeff's sense of humor, as he tricks Fred into getting up close and personal with the snake in an old mailbag. But things take a wild turn when Fred gets the shock of his life, sending the truck swerving through a tight corner and stripping both side mirrors off. Fred's terror and Jeff's storytelling? Unforgettable. Then, we move on to a yarn from Jeff's boxing days, where he was thrown into the ring with McGill the Gorilla—a fight that might have been rigged, but not in the way Jeff had planned. With help from his mate Doughy, a former light heavyweight champion, Jeff takes us through a series of wild moves and codes in the ring, teaching us all that boxing (and life) isn't always what it seems. And to top it all off, there's a story about Bob Cooper and his lost cockatoo. When the bird escapes, Jeff and his mate Peter find themselves with an unexpected guest... until Bob comes back from holiday and wants to reward them for their "rescue" efforts. But what Jeff didn't count on was the cockatoo's true fate. It's a yarn with a twist and some classic outback humor. It's another cracker of an episode from Jeff, filled with unexpected turns, laughs, and a whole lot of adventure. It's now listed as an endangered species. A new national working group is coordinating recovery efforts. Headlines: Royals wrap up Australian tour, over 20 world leaders meet with Putin at BRICS summit, former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO arrested on sex trafficking charges, the Murray River named in a global top travel list, and a Cockatoo has been rescued from a Sydney Coles after a month trapped inside. Deep dive: Few crimes in Australia in recent years have been as shocking as the murder of Bruce Saunders, who was fed into a woodchipper on a property north of Brisbane in 2017. A new LiSTNR exclusive investigative podcast, released today, has uncovered details about the woman behind the death, Sharon Graham, including how she convinced a man to kill Saunders, and another to help in the coverup. How did she become the kind of person capable of such a crime? Were there signs this was going to happen and did anyone miss them? Tara Cassidy is a journalist and host of Crime In Focus: Killer Charm. Due to trapping for the pet trade, the talkative and showy Yellow-crested Cockatoo is now considered critically endangered. But scientists recently discovered a stronghold for the species: Komodo Island — yes, the one with the dragons. The Komodo population of Yellow-crested Cockatoos appears stable. The island has been an Indonesian national park since 1980. Park rangers may have helped deter poachers, but community support for conservation and the literal dragons have played a role, too.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Today's episode welcomes Gail Kasper - the world's leader in customization for sales keynote speeches and training programs. She is the creator of the Systematic Attitude Development-Technique™️ (SAD-T™️) and Cockatoo Selling, an innovative advanced sales program. These concepts are described in detail in her books Unstoppable: 6 Easy Steps To Find And Achieve Your FIRE and Sell Like A Cockatoo: How To Master The New Way Of Selling In A Rapidly Changing World. She's also a 2x TEDx Speaker, TV Host, sought after podcast guest and sales trainer who gets in the trenches with her clients to guarantee that they achieve their desired outcomes. When Gail started out in sales, she was selling training programs making only commission. Soon enough her first media opportunity arrived hosting a weekly TV show, which ultimately got her fired from the training company. With only 1 active coaching client, she started getting more work within the clients firm, eventually moving across regional offices all the way to holding lectures at their companies training university. College dropouts finding sales is a tale older than time. The reason why to this day companies still choose to hire them for sales positions is simple - when you don't have a fallback, you're much more likely to be self driven, which is a huge asset in sales. Both Gail and Kevin agree that in 2024 salespeople have gotten lazier, which could be attributed to the variety of tools, automations and AI workflows that have become easily accessible to everyone. Unfortunately for them, in the current economic climate doing the bare minimum and overly relying on tools is no longer a sustainable strategy. In this episode, Avetis Antaplyan interviews Gail Casper, a two-time TED speaker and sales expert. They discuss Gail's journey in sales, the importance of customization in sales training, and the challenges of selling in different industries. They also talk about the role of networking and referrals in sales, the systematic attitude development technique, and the key qualities to look for when hiring sales professionals. Gail Casper discusses her experience as a semi-finalist on The Apprentice and the lessons she learned from the process. She emphasizes the importance of thinking quickly on your feet and fighting for yourself in competitive situations. Gail also shares how her experience in media, including having her own show and contributing to Success Magazine, has contributed to her sales career as a trainer. She talks about her new book, 'Sell Like a Cockatoo,' which focuses on mastering the new way of selling in a rapidly changing world. Gail also discusses the impact of AI on sales and the importance of genuine rapport building in sales interactions. Takeaways Sales is often seen as a dirty word, but it actually comes from a Greek root word meaning 'to give'. Customization is key in sales training, including understanding the company, its value proposition, and the products. Networking and referrals are powerful tools in sales, and face-to-face interactions can make a big difference. The systematic attitude development technique helps sales professionals get logical in the face of emotion and overcome challenges. When hiring sales professionals, look for core competencies such as passion for the product, resilience, and a customer-centric mindset. Thinking quickly on your feet and fighting for yourself are important skills in competitive situations. Experience in media can contribute to a sales career by boosting confidence and providing opportunities for training and coaching. Genuine rapport building is crucial in sales, and salespeople should focus on understanding the customer's needs and providing value. AI may have a role in sales, but human-to-human contact and targeted, personalized approaches are still essential for success.
