Welcome to one of our themed episodes of ScaleUp Radio, one of our monthly ones where we focus on a particular theme. The theme this time around is credibility. And there's some great content. Before you switch off and say, ‘I know all about credibility, and of course it's really, really important - It's all about Google reviews and testimonials', give me a moment. Yes, that's a part of it, but there's a lot of deeper thinking within this session. So some really great things and if you're not familiar with something called the reputation chasm, or the credibility chasm or gap, then you should be as it could be explaining some of the difficulties that you may be having. It's a really interesting way of looking at it and we've got three great guest presentations today looking at different aspects of credibility. Really listen out for what they've got to say: We've got Hannah Haffield from Make More Noise PR. We've got Gary MaWhinney from Platform 81. And we've got Peter Roper from the Family Business Practice. Great people great credibility of their own, and some great advice that they're giving. Let's go across and listen to the presentations and the panel discussion at the end with some great business owners. On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, I talk with Peter Roper, the founder of The Family Business Practice. This is a business development and learning practice, which helps businesses of all shapes and sizes that are either run by families, or are serving families. Peter has an extensive background in business and is a successful author of several business books, including ‘And Death Came Third' , but it hasn't always been a bed of roses along the way, and there are lessons to be learnt as we talk about some of the challenges that he's faced. In the 8 years since it started it has grown to have nearly 200 members across most of the UK. Pete is incredibly philosophical about the practice, but also the concept of running a business, and it's the philosophy of “filling the fridge” that separates it from other similar groups and organisations that are out there today. As always, there's plenty of ground covered in our conversation, including: - How it's never too late to start your own business. Peter was in his late 50's when he started The Family Business Practice and, as long as you enjoy what you're doing, age doesn't matter. - Transitioning your family business to the next generation isn't the difficult thing that so many make it out to be. - The difference between a family business and a corporate company. - How essential it is to get financial advice when looking at starting, or growing your business As you'll hear, Peter is a lively talker and this felt much more like a fireside chat than an interview! I know you'll get some great nuggets out of this episode Peter can be found here: linkedin.com/in/peteraroper https://www.familybusinesspractice.com/ peter@familybusinessman.com And Death Came Third by Andy Lopata and Peter Roper - https://www.waterstones.com/book/and-death-came-third/andy-lopata/peter-roper/9781907722301 Running On Empty by Peter Roper - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Running-Empty-Peter-Roper/dp/B009AP0646 The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People by Stephen R Covey - https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-7-habits-of-highly-effective-people-revised-and-updated/stephen-r-covey/9781471195204 7 Strategies For Weather & Happiness by Jim Rohn - https://www.waterstones.com/book/7-strategies-for-wealth-and-happiness/jim-rohn/9780761506164 Zoom - https://zoom.us/ Xero - https://www.xero.com/uk/ Calm - https://www.calm.com/ Headspace - https://www.headspace.com/ ScaleUp Radio cannot be held responsible for the content of third party websites Scaling up your business isn't easy, and can be a little daunting. This week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio is looking at the vital piece of running your business - planning. I realise that it’s been difficult to do any kind of planning over the past 12 months or so - but as everyone starts to emerge out of the pandemic, and businesses are starting up again, this is a great time to start planning. Specifically, we’ll talk about working on your 3-Year Plan This episode is a replay episode, but the advice in it is just as relevant as when we first published it; in some ways, even more so. In the episode, you’ll hear from: - Peter Roper from Family Business Practice - Giovanni Finocchio from Midven - Kul Sanghera from Worcestershire Business Central And we cover some of the big questions around a 3-Year Plan, including: - Why bother with a 3-year plan for your business? - It might sound obvious, but how often should you do one? Also, with that in mind, should we also be thinking longer than 3 years ahead? - What should you be thinking about when you’re putting your 3-Year Plan together - how do you start? - Who should be involved in forming the plan? And making sure that it’s executed? - How do you decide when to keep to the plan and, when circumstances change, when to move away from it? You’ll also hear a few mentions of a poster that was shown at a meeting that was held just before the recording. Something we call the SmartWeb® If you’d like a pdf of copy of it then please email admin@biz-smart.co.uk It’s a great conversation, covering businesses across the spectrum including family businesses and those seeking venture capital investment - nicely covering most aspects of this important topic in anyone’s scale up journey. I’m sure that almost everyone listening to this is aware of something called The Butterfly Effect. It comes from the phrase that a butterfly flapping it’s wings can cause a hurricane - that a small incident can bring about a much larger event. That’s something I want to talk about in this episode of ScaleUp Radio. I recently delivered a session on The Power Of Small Changes, and the much larger effect that it could have on your business. So, in this sort presentation, you’ll hear about: - The benefits of making small changes within your business - How it works within your 90-Day Business Plan We also hear from Louise of BizSmart UK who takes a slightly different approach to making small changes within your business, and introduces us to someone called Tim Woods. You’ll have to listen to the episode to find out more. Finally, we hear from Peter Roper from The Family Business Practise, who takes us through the process of small changes that he’s introduced to his business - and the effect that those changes have had. Within the presentation too, there are a couple of tools mentioned, which are also available to you, the listeners to ScaleUp Radio. If you would like to receive these tools to help you brainstorm some ideas about making small changes within your business, simply email admin@biz-smart.co.uk This is one of the valuable episodes that we’ve ever done. I’m sure you’ll get something out of it. Do you dread going to networking events? Do you hide at the back of the room when you have the opportunity to present? In 1984 a New York Times Survey on Social Anxiety placed death third in the list of people's biggest fears. The top two responses were walking into a room full of strangers and speaking in public. And death came third! During this show, business networking strategist Andy Lopata, and Business Development Strategist Peter Roper, will talk us through their top tips for net-working and speaking and why their book is still as relevant today as it was when it was first published ten years ago!

Ever experienced a time when life looked great, only for a sudden change to occur and your perspectives were changed forever? For some of our show guests this has involved recovering psychologically and financially from business failure. In April 2006, Peter Roper became a bestselling author. Outwardly life looked fabulous but in just a few short months, through a combination of some poor choices and perhaps bad luck, Peter had to start again from scratch. Turning failure into success he wrote 'Running on Empty' to share his experiences and to donate the profits to a charity close to his heart - 'The Samaritans' . In this show Peter will be brutally honest about the challenges he faced in business, the effect it had and, more crucially, what to do if you face the same situation. He will share the the must know conclusions that he has drawn from his experiences and the Golden Rule he applies to business in this decade.
