In February 2024, Myanmar reactivated an old law which had been on hold for 14 years, stating adult men aged up to 35, and women up to 27 years old, must serve at least two years in the country's armed forces. The plan is to add sixty thousand new recruits annually – and anyone caught avoiding conscription faces prison and a fine. It's part of the military-led government's bid to fight back in a brutal civil war, which broke out in 2021 after its coup seized power from the democratically elected party. A violent crackdown on the peaceful public protests that followed triggered widespread armed resistance and has energised other groups who are determined to end military leadership. Myanmar is no stranger to internal unrest, but this latest conflict is pushing it closer to the edge. This week we're asking - Is Myanmar on the brink of collapse?Contributors: Tin Htar Swe, Former Editor of BBC Burmese Service & freelance Myanmar consultant Professor Michael W. We talk about what a strong book proposal, cover letter, and sample chapters need to do. We also talk about what it means to write your academic book with strong narrative; the significance of the table of contents; why academic writers cannot rely on facts alone to make a point; the importance of figuring out your “core audience”; understanding your book's central questions; what to expect (and not expect) from a literary agent and from a trade press; why an academic press might be a better fit for your book; and why it's okay not to earn out your advance. What a Creep: Jann WennerSeason 22, Episode 1Jann Wenner was the editor of Rolling Stone magazine from 1967 to 2019, covering everything from the Beatles to Woodstock to Live Aid and even Hip Hop at some point in the 1990s. He made millions as rock culture's gatekeeper and key in developing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For decades, critics derided Rolling Stone as a bastion for a white, male-centered worldview with little appreciation for women or people of color. This past week, his interview with the New York Times over the release of his book The Masters: Conversations with Bono, Dylan, Garcia, Jagger, Lennon, Springsteen, and Townshend, which is a compilation of his interviews with seven artists he considers cultural icons that created the “Zeitgeist” that shines brightly to this day. When asked why he didn't include any women or people of color, his response:“When I was referring to the zeitgeist, I was referring to Black performers, not female performers,. It's not that they're not creative geniuses. It's not that they're inarticulate, although, go have a deep conversation with Grace Slick or Janis Joplin. Please, be my guest…The people I interviewed were the kind of philosophers of rock.Of Black artists — you know, Stevie Wonder, genius, right? I suppose when you use a word as broad as “masters,” the fault is using that word. Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield? I mean, they just didn't articulate at that level.Today, we discuss Wenner's long career and where he winds up in the Creep category. Patricia Hernandez is now the former Editor-in-Chief of Kotaku, having been fired from the position just a few days ago. In today's episode we're going to be talking to her about what's happened and digging into the increasingly strained relationship between Kotaku's editorial team and the company which owns the site itself, G/O Media."I can't really go into specifics about the reason because it does involve other staffers and their personal information, so I just want to be sensitive to that. But I will say it was a deeply G/O Media reason. It's all been pretty disappointing.I feel like, in some ways, maybe it was for the best. I was opening my notes app and kind of scrolling through it and came across a resignation letter that I wrote literally a year ago."Support the show
It is 20 years since the Boston Globe exposed the abuse scandal that rocked the Catholic church world wide. Two weeks ago The Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry's released its interim report into Marylands School for disabled boys in Christchurch, finding widespread sexual and physical abuse of students between 1955 and 1984.The Press newspaper in Christchurch began reporting on the horrors at Marylands School in 2002. Martin Baron was the editor of the Boston Globe, and its award winning Spotlight investigative team which tenaciously uncovered widespread sexual abuse by priests, hushed up by the church paying private settlements to claimants. The story was adapted for the big screen - Spotlight winning two academy awards. He joins Susie Ferguson to talk about the impact of the Spotlight team's work, two decades on.
At some point during college, Caley Fretz realized that his aspirations of becoming a professional cyclist weren't in the cards. By the time graduation rolled around, he was sipping limoncello on the coast of Italy while covering the Giro as a journalist. He never looked back. He went on to work as Senior Editor at VeloNews before becoming Editor-in-Chief at CyclingTips. While there, he shaped the outlet into a distinctive, often humorous, writer-driven voice in the cycling space. Late last year, he and many other members of the CyclingTips team were laid off by Outside, Inc., and he struck out on his own to create Escape Collective, a journalist-led, membership-driven antidote to mainstream cycling media. In this conversation, Caley tells Payson about the gap in the market that Escape Collective is trying to fill and the state of cycling media that got him here. They talk about the investigative piece that Escape Collective published about the implosion of the Zaaf Cycling Team earlier this year and how he's envisioning much more than road cycling for the future of the outlet. They also talk about the long shadow of Lance Armstrong, Caley's unfiltered thoughts on Outside's takeover of cycling media, and Tom Boonen's legs. Instagram: @theadventurestache
