In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, we're diving into the groundbreaking world of personalised cancer treatments with Prasun Chakraborty, founder of Genevation – a biotech startup on a mission to revolutionise how we treat and potentially prevent cancer. Unlike the traditional one-size-fits-all approach to oncology, Genevation is using advanced AI and genetic sequencing to create custom mRNA cancer vaccines for individual patients – in just 14 days. Prasun shares the inspiring story behind the business, the massive challenges of scaling deep-tech biotech, and his clear vision of a future where cancer is not just treatable, but preventable. The conversation unfolds in three parts: Genevation's Business Model & Scaleup Journey From solo founder in 2022 to a lean but mighty team with key strategic partnerships, Prasun explains how Genevation is disrupting the cancer treatment space with a personalised, tech-first model that sidesteps the traditional limitations of clinical research. Scaling Challenges in Biotech & Beyond Prasun reflects on the key hurdles facing deep-tech startups – especially the funding gap created by investors' lack of scientific understanding and the fixation on short-term ROI. He shares candid insights into how Genevation is navigating these barriers and what it will take to unlock their next phase of growth. Quickfire Insights We round off with some powerful reflections from Prasun on leadership, mindset, and why it's essential to stay focused on the mission, even when the money and metrics don't align. Key Highlights: Genevation's AI algorithm cuts vaccine candidate selection time from 4 hours to 5 minutes. Preclinical data shows a single dose prevented tumour growth for 13 days in lung cancer models. The company is raising $5M to fund its IND application and unlock further investment. Strategic partners like Google, NVIDIA, AWS, and Illumina are backing Genevation with substantial resources. There's a lot in here – from AI innovation to biotech regulation, from strategic partnerships to the raw reality of raising millions in funding just to prove your concept. "Every cancer is unique – and it's time our treatments reflect that." Hi, I'm Granger Forson from www.bizsmart-gloucestershire.co.uk, or find me on LinkedIn, and in this episode of ScaleUp Radio, I'm joined by Paul Wray, the owner of Breakspeare Clinic, a multi-site physiotherapy and wellness practice based in West Oxfordshire.   Paul's story is one of continuous learning, resilience, and a genuine commitment to helping people move better and live pain-free lives. Starting as a physiotherapist over 30 years ago, he worked within the NHS before joining Breakspeare Clinic, eventually buying the business after a decade of hands-on experience. Today, his clinics span three locations, combining physiotherapy, osteopathy, podiatry, and complementary therapies to address not just symptoms but root causes of pain.   In our conversation, Paul opens up about the highs and lows of buying and growing a business, from parting ways with a business partner to rebuilding his team, refining his processes, and embracing technology. What stands out is his humility and curiosity, his belief that leadership and business acumen, like physiotherapy, are skills you can learn and refine with the right guidance.   Paul also talks candidly about the challenges of communication, people management, and the power of surrounding yourself with the right mentors. His focus on mentoring young practitioners, improving systems, and growing with purpose is a masterclass in "grow people" and "fix what bugs you" thinking.   If you've ever felt the pull to turn your craft into a business, or you're navigating the jump from practitioner to leader, Paul's story will leave you inspired to "just do it and find out". He and his business partner stepped away from the comfort of employment during COVID to create a business that truly reflected their values. Their goal? To build spaces that not only look beautiful but also work in harmony with the environment and the people who use them.   Through Habitat+, Tom champions Passive House design, an internationally recognised energy standard that cuts carbon emissions and creates comfortable, efficient spaces. But what really shines through is his belief that sustainability isn't an add-on, it's a mindset. It's about how we think, design, source, and build for long-term impact.   We also dive into the realities of running a growing practice, learning to manage people, balancing client work with business building, and finding time for creative reflection. Tom's approach to leadership is rooted in continuous learning, both for himself and his team. He even teaches at university, sharing his passion for design and growth with the next generation.   This is an inspiring conversation for anyone building a purpose-driven business, one that proves that curiosity, integrity, and sustainability can drive both profit and progress. In this special episode of ScaleUp Radio, we're bringing you insights from our monthly ScaleUp Club session, where we were joined by Alexandra Smith, co-founder of FuturePlus. Alexandra delivered a powerful session focused on how sustainability is not just a moral imperative – it's a competitive advantage for SMEs. Drawing from real-world examples and her work with FuturePlus, Alexandra made a compelling case for embedding sustainability as a strategic pillar in business decision-making – on equal footing with finance and operations. From government contracts to talent retention, and from resource efficiency to brand value, sustainability, when done right, drives profit and resilience. She also tackled one of the hottest topics in business today: the role of AI in sustainability. While AI offers exciting potential, Alexandra was clear that it must be guided by human insight – especially in the SME space, where data is often limited or inconsistent. During the Q&A session, we explored key distinctions between how microbusinesses and large corporates approach sustainability, and the importance of moving from tick-box compliance to strategic value creation. What we covered: Why sustainability is a profit driver, not a cost The importance of establishing a central sustainability baseline How FuturePlus simplifies sustainability through its guided SaaS platform Why AI can't replace human oversight in setting and interpreting sustainability goals Practical steps SMEs can take today – no matter their size or budget Standout Message: "Sustainability should be the third pillar of every strategic decision – right alongside finance and operations." In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, I'm joined by Harry Shearer, co-founder of Shearer Associates, a Gloucestershire-based finance recruitment firm that's built its success on relationships, trust, and a strong local ethos.   Harry shares how he and his mum, Claire, turned a simple “why not give it a go?” conversation in their garden into a thriving recruitment business serving Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. Their approach is refreshingly personal in a world increasingly driven by KPIs and quick wins.   Throughout our conversation, Harry reveals how Shearer Associates focuses on long-term partnerships, not transactions, and how that authenticity has become their defining advantage. We also explore how being small and family-run allows them to stay agile, adaptable and deeply connected to their community.   Harry talks openly about the early challenges of balancing the excitement of growth with staying disciplined in the business fundamentals, from cashflow to marketing. You'll hear how structure, systems and the Pomodoro method keep him grounded and productive, even when the to-do list feels endless.   Finally, Harry shares his reflections on leadership, learning from his mum's wisdom, and how authenticity on platforms like LinkedIn can transform client engagement. In this special ScaleUp Club Q&A session, we welcomed back two familiar faces – Ross Latta, co-founder of MacroFin, and Adam Johnson, representing 3RP. I originally interviewed Ross and his Macrofin co-founder Stephen.  Since then, both Macrofin and 3RP, once competitors in the NetSuite ERP space, have recently been acquired by Cooper Parry – a bold move that's opened up new opportunities and strategic directions for each. What followed was an insightful, honest conversation around leadership transitions, cultural integration, and navigating the delicate balance between entrepreneurial freedom and corporate structure. Key Takeaways: Merging Without Losing Identity: Although MacroFin and 3RP now sit under the Cooper Parry umbrella, both retain operational autonomy – a deliberate move to preserve their distinct cultures and strengths. Constructive Conflict Fuels Growth: Encouraging debate, challenging ideas, and psychological safety are central to how both teams make decisions and innovate. Leadership Evolution: With access to more experienced leadership, Ross and Stephen have been able to shift focus toward strategic growth and people development. Bold Moves Enabled: Financial backing from Cooper Parry has allowed both businesses to think bigger, act bolder, and invest in long-term impact. Standout Quote: "We've built a culture where everyone can challenge decisions — because it's not about being right, it's about getting it right." – Ross Latta Make sure you don't miss any future episodes by subscribing to ScaleUp Radio wherever you like to listen to your podcasts. Hi, I'm Granger Forson — you can find me at www.bizsmart-gloucestershire.co.uk or on LinkedIn. On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, I'm joined by Ric Wilson, founder of ERP Experts and now an active investor, who shares a remarkable journey of building, scaling, and transforming businesses.   Ric began his career in the pharmaceutical industry, before stepping into entrepreneurship in 2005. What started as a consultancy soon evolved into ERP Experts, a seven-figure business and Oracle partner, helping small and mid-market firms integrate their systems for a single version of the truth. But Ric's story goes far beyond ERP. He talks candidly about the hard lessons of letting go, empowering teams, and why systemisation is the foundation of sustainable growth.   Culture sits at the heart of Ric's leadership. With almost no staff turnover, he reveals how listening, development planning, and consistent HR processes created a workplace where people genuinely thrive. His “aftercare” approach to clients — going beyond support to deliver real peace of mind — is another hallmark of what makes ERP Experts stand out. In more recent years, Ric has expanded into acquiring and turning around businesses with a buy-and-build strategy. He explains the critical markers he looks for when considering acquisitions — from proven lead flow to robust customer retention — and why the toughest thing in business will always be finding and keeping customers.   This conversation is a masterclass in resilience, focus, and practical wisdom. Whether you're just starting out or leading a mature company, Ric's journey shows that growth comes from the courage to try, the systems to support people, and the curiosity to keep improving.   To ensure you don't miss any inspirational future episodes do subscribe to ScaleUp Radio wherever you like to listen to your podcasts.   So, let's now dive into the inspiring journey of systemising, empowering, and scaling with Ric Wilson.   Scaling up your business isn't easy, and can be a little daunting. In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, Kevin Brent is joined by Milo Pinckney, the innovative founder behind Rollr, a startup that's redefining something as everyday as deodorant—transforming it into a premium, sustainable, and aspirational product. Rollr is not just another personal care brand—it's a design-first, refillable system that reduces waste while delivering an experience that feels more like applying perfume than deodorant. Think gemstone roller balls, refillable sachets, and patent-pending technology—all designed to create an emotional connection with a product we use 22,000 times in our lifetime. In just 10 months since launch, Rollr has already expanded into six countries, raised £500k in seed funding, and built significant brand momentum—despite the challenges of launching a pre-revenue D2C product in a tough market. We begin today with a prayer for our brothers and sisters in Russia and Ukraine. Most of all, a worldwide revival might even start there, in the midst of turmoil. The conversation in John 4 is as astonishing as our prayers. To the woman, a Jew talking to a Samaritan woman was unthinkable. The holy God of the universe initiating communion with us is just as inconceivable. Yet He does:Moses sees the burning bush; the Hebrews tell us He has spoken in various and sundry ways. At one point, all I knew of the Bible was Romans 6:23, from a billboard.Hebrews also tells us that now He is speaking to us through His son. "in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they." Hebrews 1:2-4And as Jesus is turning the woman from water to eternal life, He tells us in this passage: "…made purification of sins…" Eternity is His message. Our So What?We ask this question: Knowing that the spiritual is so much more critical than the physical. How might that change the content of our prayers? "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." Hi, I'm Granger Forson. You can always find me at www.bizsmart-gloucestershire.co.uk or on LinkedIn. On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, I had the pleasure of speaking with Andy Western, founder of AJW Solutions and Sam Boards.   Andy's story is one of resilience, reinvention, and remarkable innovation. From a five-million-pound management buyout falling through to starting AJW Solutions in 2007, he carved a niche in the defence and aerospace industry. Supplying the MOD within months of launching, Andy built a trusted reputation in engineering, project management, and ground support equipment.   But Andy's real pivot came when life introduced him to a new challenge — and opportunity. Inspired by the needs of autistic teenagers, he founded Sam Boards, creating sensory activity and motor skill products that were both discreet and effective. What started as 3D-printed prototypes quickly gained traction in schools, hospitals, dementia care homes, and even police custody suites, helping people manage anxiety, neurodiverse challenges, and recovery.   Today, Sam Boards products are used by 14 UK police forces, the NHS, and organisations as far away as Australia and Ukraine. Andy's journey shows how adversity — from divorce to COVID setbacks — can be turned into purpose-driven innovation with global impact.   If you're curious about creating products that solve real problems, growing businesses with integrity, and leaving a legacy of positive change, this episode will inspire and challenge you in equal measure.   To ensure you don't miss any inspirational future episodes do subscribe to ScaleUp Radio wherever you like to listen to your podcasts.   So, let's now dive into the inspiring journey of resilience, innovation, and life-changing impact with Andy Western.   Scaling up your business isn't easy, and can be a little daunting. In this ScaleUp VIP Club session, we focused on the crucial topic of building high-performing sales funnels – and cutting through the noise to make your marketing really work. We kicked off with our new monthly segment, the AI Pulse, delivered by Paul Rhodes. Paul shared actionable insights on building an “AI Brain” – using custom GPTs to extract knowledge from the founder's head, reduce team dependency, and supercharge productivity. A standout quote: "AI is not about replacing humans, it's about humans with AI versus humans without." Paul highlighted how combining good documentation with a powerful AI assistant allows your team to make better, faster decisions – without relying on you for everything. Then we dived into the main theme – Sales In, Sales Out – How to Build Funnels That Work, with guest speaker Mark Day, founder of Battle Group Training. Mark drew on his military and fitness industry background to give a practical, boots-on-the-ground view of what it takes to create a funnel that actually converts. He broke down the funnel into actionable checkpoints: Awareness (be visible where your customers already are) Consideration (build trust with helpful content) Conversion (make buying effortless) Loyalty (keep them coming back) Mark's perspective was grounded and real – his business scaled through COVID, he rebranded based on changing search trends, and he's used data to cut marketing waste and fix retention issues. His approach to marketing funnels is laser-focused on solving real problems and avoiding the fluff. Standout Message: “Keep it simple, show up, be useful – and remember: a funnel is just a journey to build trust, not a sales trick.” Make sure you don't miss any future episodes by subscribing to ScaleUp Radio wherever you like to listen to your podcasts. In this episode of ScaleUp Radio, Kevin Brent speaks with Matthew Powell, the founder of WarmZilla – a fast-growing disruptor in the UK home services market. From boilers to EV chargers and air conditioning, WarmZilla has built a 24/7 online platform that delivers next-day installations across the nation. Over just two and a half years, Matthew scaled the business to multi-million pound revenues, all without external funding  - and they are now in their 7th year. But now, with an eye on £50 million turnover within five years, he's exploring new frontiers – from international expansion to possibly bringing in a CEO to help take the business to the next level. This episode is packed with valuable insights across three key sections: The Business Model & Scaleup Journey: Discover how WarmZilla connects customers to a 700+ subcontractor network via a proprietary tech platform, and how its branding (featuring “Derek” the mascot) and TV campaigns have become household recognisable. Scaling Challenges & Insights: Matthew shares candidly about the growing pains – from balancing customer and subcontractor needs to cash flow hurdles in a seasonal market – and how innovation and strategic hiring are helping him manage scale. Quickfire Round: A punchy end to the episode with insights into Matthew's mindset, leadership style, and lessons learned. The one key thing to listen out for? How branding and customer experience – when done right – can truly transform an industry. In this special follow-up episode of The Good Life EDU Podcast, Dr. Larianne Polk (CEO of the Nebraska ESU Coordinating Council) and Dr. Dan Schnoes (CEO of ESU 3) return to reflect on their recent educational exchange in Singapore and South Korea. Their journey, part of a national effort to build global education partnerships through AESA, opened new doors for reimagining how service agencies and school systems can prepare students—and educators—for an increasingly interconnected world. From cutting-edge innovations in polytechnic schools to globally collaborative student research projects, Dr. Polk and Dr. Schnoes share insights on what global learning really looks like and why it matters. They also discuss practical ways ESUs in Nebraska might engage in global partnerships through distance learning, teacher exchanges, and student collaborations—making international experiences more accessible than ever before. Whether you're an educator, administrator, or policymaker, this conversation highlights why cultivating a global mindset isn't just a “nice-to-have”—it's a necessity for the future of education.
