In Portland, Oregon, stands the grand Pittock Mansion, once home to the city's elite but now a site of mysterious hauntings. Built in 1914, the mansion has a rich history, but it's the ghostly residents that intrigue many visitors. The spirits of Henry and Georgiana Pittock, the mansion's original owners, are believed to haunt the house, with guests reporting strange apparitions and unexplained sounds. We delve into the stories of eerie encounters at Pittock Mansion, where the past refuses to remain in the shadows. Is the grandeur of this historic home enough to keep its former owners from moving on, or are they still watching over their legacy?

On this week's episode, I'm going to tell you the history and hauntings of the Pittock Mansion in Portland, Oregon. I figured we needed a sweet story for Valentine's Day. I also wanted a break from the darkness of the shanghai tunnels. I was lucky enough to visit the beautiful Pittock Mansion while we were out there with the Oddities and Curiosities Expo last year. I was not prepared for how gorgeous this place was. It is tucked up on this incredibly tall hill that just weaves through this extra green and dense rainforest. When you get to the top of the hill the house just emerges from these trees quite suddenly. The house itself is a beige gray with red roofs and from the back it looks like a fortress almost. If you go to the front of the house get roses and a view of Mt. Hood and the Portland skyline to die for. Oh and the interior! Well we will talk about that a little bit later. So lets get into shall we? Grab yourself a cup of tea, maybe something with roses, make sure the doors are locked, and the sage is close by. I have a story to tell you. Welcome to the PNW! Today, Ainsley tells the story of the haunted Pittock Mansion located in Portland, Oregon. These are some of our most hospitable ghosts yet. They will be glad you listened.
From its first days publishing as a daily in 1861 until well into the 20th century, The Oregonian existed as a newspaper by white men, for white men. The consequences were profound. Its white supremacist worldviews — excusing lynching, supporting segregation, stigmatizing people of color — helped shape the state today. This is Beat Check with The Oregonian. Last week we heard from editor and vice president of content for the Oregonian and OregonLive, Therese Bottomly. This week we turn to a family that was directly affected by The Oregonian's racism. This week, investigative reporter Rob Davis takes the mic. In the second half of the show, Rob interviews Zachary Stocks, the executive director of the Oregon Black Pioneers. But first, Rob chats with Vicki Nakashima. Vicki's dad Ted, wrote a searing piece for The New Republic in 1942 about his experience in a prison camp during World War II. Ted Nakashima was a second-generation Japanese American who was imprisoned without due process, one of 120,000 people nationwide, two thirds of whom were U.S. citizens like Ted. Shortly after his magazine piece, the Oregonian sent a young reporter to an Oregon prison camp. The story downplayed the horrors, saying “a vast majority seemed to consider their detention a vacation.” On October 6th, Bottomly apologized to Vicki Nakashima for the xenophobic article. Nobody likes Mondays, it's a bit of a trope from Garfield to Office Space there's a wide array of example of social and artistic commentary about how much they suck. Today's story is about what appeared to be a simple, and for most people, nearly everyday occurrence of conflict in traffic. This encounter turned deadly for Herman Leslie Graham III in an instant. But this story isn't just about road rage, as tempting a thought as it might be. Once you hear the whole story it's pretty hard to argue that a force far more insidious wasn't at work somehow. We'd like to think that our society has progressed in amazing ways but the truth is that terrible things can still happen in broad daylight.Virginia Barreda Twitter - @vbarreda2Indie Drop-In Network featured our Pittock Mansion episode on Scary Time! We start this episode by going over the meaning of a lost crystal. Sadly, Cassie recently experienced this and wanted to share her findings. Then while we're already on a witchy topic, we might as well cover the Witch's Castle in Portland, OR! Local legends swirl around this magical, abandoned, moss covered, stone building. Excerpt from-https://www.amazon.com/ Portland-Then-Now%C2%AE-Dan-Haneckow/dp/1911216473Portland Then and Now pairs historic photographs with specially commissioned views of the same scenes as they look today. The book traces the evolution of Portland from the early years of photography to the present, showing how it became Oregon’s largest and most vibrant city.Set against the backdrop of snow-capped Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens, Portland’s skyline is a mixture of ultra-modern skyscrapers and elaborate Victorian structures that reveal a rich architectural heritage. Originally no more than a cluster of log structures and wood-frame buildings carved out of the dense forest, "Stumptown" soon became the Pacific Northwest’s premier freshwater port, filled with supply ships bound for the gold fields of California, but also intent on becoming a cultural center. This fascinating book traces the evolution of this popular tourist destination from a small town long dominated by cast-iron, terracotta and brick buildings to a city with ornate mansions, carefully designed neighborhoods, and a downtown that bespeaks pride in good city planning. Portland would start as a pioneer town in the state of Oregon and grow into an industrialized modern city. One of the early families to make a mark on the city were the Pittocks. They were one of the wealthiest families in Portland society and they would use some of that wealth to build their retirement in the form of a chateau up on a hill overlooking the city. Today, it is a museum and reputedly haunted. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Pittock Mansion! Listener Discretion is advised – there is very adult content ahead and you have been warned. Welcome heathens welcome to the world of the weird and unexplained. I’m your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the weird, wonderful, unexplained, eerie, scary and down-right unbelievable. There will be tales of ghosts, murder, supernatural beings and unexplained mysteries. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, relax and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma.... And on today’s Dark enigma we’re continuing our foray into the most ghostly of places to visit on your summer vacation, and I know last week I gave you some international flair, but this week we’re bringing it back home. Why? Well because the summer is almost over so any trip has to be close and quick, so we have to bring it back to the states. But before we get into all that, we will be playing our drinking game as always. Please remember the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. Since today’s episode is dedicated to the great Northwest, any drink associated with Portland or Oregon will be appropriate. If you’re like me, I’m thinking Seattle circa 1998, so grunge, Nirvana and flannel! Alrighty, now for the game part… every time I say mansion that will be a single shot and every time I say Oregon, that’s a double shot. Now that we have the business end out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma… and the story of the very famous and very very haunted Pittock mansion, so let’s hit it my heathens… Henry Pittock, a London-born newspaper publisher, and his wife Georgiana, met and married in Portland in 1860. Henry went on to become one of the wealthiest men in Oregon society, investing in a variety of industries, including railroads, banking, ranching, and mining. He was also an avid climber and outdoorsman. He helped to found Mazamas climbing club, and became part of the first expedition climb Mount Hood. Georgiana was also an active member of society, becoming involved in many cultural organizations and charities, including the Women’s Union and the Ladies Relief Society. She helped to found the Martha Washington Home, a residence for working women. She was also an enthusiastic gardener and was a founding member of the Portland Rose Society and the Portland Rose Festival. In 1909, the Pittocks decided they wanted to build a home in Portland to retire in. They hired the architect Edward T. Foulkes to design the Pittock Mansion from scratch. The forty-six room mansion was built on a hill overlooking Portland, with a French Renaissance exterior. The inside was uniquely designed, with oak-paneled cabinets, marble floors, a huge central staircase, modern amenities like an elevator and dumbwaiter, and, most strikingly, beautiful views of Mount Hood and the Cascade Mountain Range. Foil lines the inside of the entryway ceiling, a nod to Georgianna’s frugal early years, when she had to save foil from old tea containers.
The Pittock Mansion is worth almost 8 million dollars.

Episode 86: Haunted Mansions – Pittock (Portland, OR) and Stickney (Bull Valley, IL) Noelle walks us through two Haunted Mansions: the Pittock Mansion in Portland, OR and the Stickney House in Bull Valley, IL. 1. The Pittock Mansion is a French-Renaissance sandstone chateau in the West Hills of Portland, OR. (We love Portland and we’re always kidding with them!) 2. The house is haunted by its former owners. (Hey, Henry and Georgianna Pittock! We see you!) 3. A paranormal investigator caught an EVP of a man saying “I’m heading back.” (That recording proves that there’s life after death!) 4. The Stickney Mansion is located in Bull Valley in McHenry County, IL. (The house was built in 1865 in the Land of Lincoln!) 5. The house served as quarters for Union soldiers during the Civil War. (It’s also believed that the house was tainted by “devil worshipers” who lived in the house in the 1960s! FUN!) Sweet Dreams. XoxoZzzzzz.
Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job
Julie Dalrymple moved to Portland from a small, tight-knit community in Napa, California. When she first moved to the Pacific Northwest, she missed that built-in network of connections. But from attending networking events, volunteering with local organizations and conducting informational interviews, Julie was able to build a solid network of contacts who opened up new opportunities for her career. On this bonus episode of Find Your Dream Job; I talked with Julie Dalrymple about how volunteering opened up new possibilities for her career and helped her secure a job she loves. You can read more about Julie Dalrymple’s job search below in her essay for our Success Stories series. What do you do for a career? Who do you work for? I am the marketing & communications manager for Classic Wines Auction (http://www.classicwinesauction.com/) in Portland. We are a small but mighty organization that produces food and wine events to raise funds for local nonprofit organizations. My job involves creating and implementing the marketing and communications strategy, promoting our events via traditional and digital marketing methods, social media, and community outreach. I do a lot of hands-on graphic and web design as well. How long did it take you to find this job? The entire process from the first interview to joining the organization took about six weeks. However, it took several years of searching for the right job. I have a significant background in nonprofit marketing but had a difficult time getting my foot in the door after I moved to Portland in 2014. How did you find your job? What resources did you use? What tool or tactic helped the most? As many others will attest, networking is such a powerful force in the job market. When I moved here three years ago, I focused on cultivating connections by going to events, volunteering, and meeting new people through introductions from friends. Several people alerted me to this particular job opening because it was so well suited to my skills, experience and interests (of course, I had already seen it on Mac’s List). Before applying and interviewing, I researched, followed their social media, reviewed their website thoroughly, and read anything I could find in the media. My prior experience and volunteerism also helped with this position, as I was familiar with the unique nonprofit model of the organization. What was the most difficult part of your job search? How did you overcome this challenge? In the case of my longer-term search for the right job, the most difficult part was dealing with rejection. When I first moved to Portland, I interviewed for a number of organizations and seemed to always be the “runner-up.” I had to learn to not take these rejections personally. It’s hard not to doubt your worth when you don’t get that job offer, but a lot is happening behind the scenes that you may not know, and any number of factors can contribute to the final decision. Also, with every job application comes a good deal of vulnerability and energy. It can be difficult to jump through all the hoops of a job search – to put yourself out there – and not know if the effort will pay off. Many organizations require detailed projects, plans and personal analysis toward the end of the process, which can be exhausting. But it can also be the key to a life-changing career move (and you can learn a lot about yourself). What is the single best piece of advice you would offer other job-seekers? Find a way to get local, hands-on experience in your desired industry. And, if you’re new to an area, explore the region, meet people, volunteer and find new connections. I volunteered a lot when I moved here – as a tour guide at the Pittock Mansion (http://www.pittockmansion.org/) (which introduced me to new friends and helped me get acquainted with the city), as a committee member for the American Cancer Society’s annual gala (http://www.portlandhopeball.com/) (which provided valuable insight into the Portland nonprofit and event scene), and as a marketing consultant for other small nonprofits (which opened new doors). I can’t stress enough the value of volunteering. It was critical in building my foundation here in Portland. Why do you love your job? The people, the mission, the work… and the wine. The people you work with make all the difference, and I’m grateful for great colleagues and an awesome boss. CWA is making a difference in the community, by serving worthy charitable organizations and bringing people together through wine, food and philanthropy. I’m excited to come into the office every day and do such great work. I’ve always loved creating memorable experiences for people, especially for a good cause, and I’m glad to be a part of an organization that shares that value. Want to learn more about Julie? It's a Halloween Double Feature as we sit down to watch two horror movies filmed entirely on location at Portland's Pittock Mansion. "Unhinged" is a D-Grade 1982 slasher flick (with very little slashing, and a lot of people taking naps), and the 1989 made-for-TV-movie "The Haunting of Sarah Hardy," starring Sela Ward and Morgan Fairchild, and Morgan Fairchild's shoulder pads. Join us as we dissect these would-be thrillers. Unhinged (1982) "The Haunting of Sarah Hardy" (1989) Starring Sela Ward and Morgan Fairchild
Mom went on a quick trip with a friend to The Dalles to pick up a crib with a friend. She was also riding the motorcycle with "R" to get into shape for longer rides in that summer. "R" was given some nice sunglasses for Father's Day. Mom felt bad about her gaps in writing and we celebrated the Fourth of July. Mom talks about calling her friends long distance on Sundays because it's cheaper, Phillip and Mat go into describing to Mathew about that since his generation don't understand the concept. Mom and "R" went to a bachelor/bachelorette party on a work night where "R" broke up a fight between the groom and "some jerk." Mom also celebrated her 24th birthday. She cleaned out a metal storage box to keep her bills organized, Phillip and Mat had forgotten about it but remember it. Mom and "R" spent the day with her dad in Portland seeing the sights: Pittock Mansion, Market Street and then rode almost all the way to the coast before it got too cold and windy and turned around to find a hotel. Mom's work was having a sidewalk sale and she wanted to dress up like a nun. Phillip and Mat pull weeds for fair money and everyone went to the drive in to watch Firefox with Clint Eastwood. The boys were excited to start school again and our well broke because we had no water to pump out of it.
