The renewed interest in Route 66 has come about because of the book Route 66: The Mother Road written by Tulsan Michael Wallis. To date, Mr. Wallis has written 17 books. His work has also been published in magazines and newspapers, including Time, LIFE, People and The New York Times among others. Wallis has been nominated three times for the Pulitzer Prize. Many honors have come his way including the Writers Hall of Fame of America. He was the first to be inducted into the Oklahoma Route 66 Hall of Fame. He was asked to be a consultant for the 2006 Pixar animated film Cars in which he provided the voice of the Sheriff of Radiator Springs including the 2011 sequel. While he enjoys public speaking, it is his writing that has earned him the titles of historian and biographer of the American West. His books include: David Crockett: The Lion of the West; The Wild West: 365 Days; Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride; Pretty Boy: The Life and Times of Charles Arthur Floyd; and Mankiller: A Chief and Her People. Michael and his wife Suzanne Fitzgerald Wallis have made their home in Tulsa, Oklahoma since 1982.

For travelers across Route 66, Meadow Gold Mack's in Tulsa is a must-stop. The twenty-foot-tall Bunyan-esque fiberglass muffler man out front is more than enough reason on its own, but head inside to see a collection of gifts and collectibles both quintessentially Oklahoma and unlike much else you'll encounter along your travels. Owner Mary Beth Babcock, Oklahoma Today's 2011 Oklahoman of the Year, is one of the key personalities to meet along the Mother Road. As traffic increased on the Mother Road, restaurants were opened to give people the sustenance they needed to get to their destinations. In this episode, Trait Thompson and Dr. Bob Blackburn discuss a few of the historic restaurants, both closed and still-thriving, located on Route 66 in Oklahoma. Their guest is Kathy Anderson, president of the Billboard Museum Association. The Oklahoma Today Show is continuing its year-long celebration of the Route 66 centennial with a visit to an Oklahoma City boutique named, simply, Route 66. Owned and managed by Jeanette Koenig, the store inside the 50 Penn Place shopping center has been selling Mother Road and travel themed art and merchandise, among other carefully curated items like soaps and lavender, for years. We spoke with Koenig to gain some insight into the vision behind this fun shop full of character. The historic Kumback Lunch in Perry observed its triple-digit birthday in April. In its day, the classic diner has seen everything from a legendary visit by Pretty Boy Floyd to the capture of Timothy McVeigh and plenty of community ups and downs. Shae Boschee, who recently purchased Kumback with her husband Scott, joins the show to talk about what the historic milestone means to the Perry community. Beyond aprons and roadside diners, women helped power and preserve Route 66. Edwardsville resident Cheryl Eicher Jett's new book “Aprons Away: Women's Work on Route 66” — which first premiered as a play — chronicles untold stories of more than 80 women who worked along the Mother Road's 2,448-mile stretch. We talk with the author about some histories of the women who shaped the landmark, including some from the St. Louis area.

As the nation commemorates the 100th anniversary of historic Route 66, some historians, scholars, and curators are offering a different perspective of the famed Mother Road. An exhibition just opened at the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City, Okla. that gives the public a view of the people, culture, and influence arising from the tribal land the road cuts through. The iconic highway Route 66 is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The so-called “Mother Road” went through large stretches of Illinois and Missouri on its two-thousand-mile trek from Chicago to Los Angeles. Historian Andrew Wanko from the Missouri Historical Society recently spoke with St. Louis on the Air host Elaine Cha about the legacy of Route 66 and its origins in Springfield, Missouri.

Last month, we recognized 100 years since the commissioning of historic Route 66 by talking about its legacy and notable stops along the highway. We were only able to touch on a small portion of the route's history, so now, we're back with another conversation about the Mother Road. Missouri History Museum historian Andrew Wanko talks about the Missourians who were instrumental in marketing the highway and its Missouri-based attractions, what made Route 66 uniquely American, and notable attractions along the roadway. We also hear recollections from Irv Logan. Irv is the grandson of Alberta Ellis, whose hotel along Route 66 was one of the only safe places in Missouri for Black travelers to stay during the Jim Crow era.

In April 1926, Route 66 received its iconic number. The so-called Mother Road takes you all the way to California, but it begins in Chicago. (Now at Navy Pier!) In celebration of 100 years, we're revisiting our little road trip from last year. Host Jacoby Cochran hopped in the car with Dario Durham and Sara Faddah, hosts of 77 Flavors, to drive the Chicago leg of old Route 66.
