*What do you do when the strategy, the program, or the plan just isn't enough? * Because I've been there—and in this episode, I talk about why our “silver bullets” so often fail us. We love quick fixes, big programs, and shiny solutions, but real renewal—personal or parish-wide—only happens when we stop trying to use God and finally turn to Him with honest hearts. In this conversation, I walk through one of my favorite (and most surprising) stories in Scripture and share the uncomfortable but hopeful truth it reveals: God isn't asking us for better strategies. He's asking for conversion. If you've ever felt discouraged, overwhelmed, or tempted to chase one more magic solution, this episode will help you breathe, refocus, and remember that God has a plan—not a gimmick—waiting for you. Welcome back to The Shawn Bolz Show, where we explore the news and culture through a prophetic lens, looking at what God is doing right now in our world. Today, we're bringing you two stories that highlight resilience, hope, and revival: ✨ Erika Kirk shares openly about life after Charlie's tragic passing—her journey in motherhood, carrying on the mission of Turning Point USA, and the unexpected ways God has shown His faithfulness through grief. Her story is a powerful reminder that God is near in our deepest pain. ✨ We'll also look at how public figures like Paul Rudd, Patrick Mahomes, Chris Pratt, and even Donald Trump are talking about their faith more boldly than ever. Is this pointing to a cultural shift toward Christ in entertainment, influence, and public life? Before we dive in, a quick note: This month, Bolz Ministries is running a special giving campaign. Every donation is matched up to $100,000 by a generous partner who believes in equipping people with prophetic discernment for these challenging days. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. — Psalm 4:8 In my younger days I looked forward to falling into bed at night with the sigh, “Sleep at last!” I still look forward to sleeping, but now I don't always look forward to bedtime. Sometimes, as night falls, I begin brooding about disappointments, regrets, unsolved problems—and I fear taking my anxieties to bed. In Psalm 4 it seems that King David may be brooding again about the rebellion of his son Absalom (Psalm 3; July 8)—not to mention his many other enemies. This psalm gives us a heightened sense of his desperation. We can almost see David twisting and turning, messing up the covers on his bed. Here again he calls out to God, pleading for mercy. In the middle of the psalm, though (v. 4), David offers some sound advice for such times of struggle in the darkness: searching one's heart and asking for forgiveness for any sins one may have done. Then, as often happens in the psalms, David moves from turmoil and agony toward trust. He does this by deliberately turning his mind toward God's faithfulness and provision. David's struggles aren't fully resolved in this psalm. But in reaffirming his trust in God, he sees a way forward. He ends with a declaration about peaceful sleep, a complete letting go into God's faithfulness. In all of our struggles, Lord, help us to cry out to you and in faith to turn to you in trust and gratitude for the gift of sleep. Amen.

Hosea 5:1-5 Behavior and works alone do not indicate a sincere faith, but there certainly are certain habits that we can practice that can fertilize a more ready turning to God. The people of Israel did not “frame their doings” to turn to God; rather, they allowed a heart bent toward idolatry and sensuality to guide their decision-making.

Palm Sunday, the day Jesus was celebrated upon arrival in Jerusalem, commences the most significant transition of Jesus' life: his journey to the cross. Unlike Jesus, we are not privy to the details of how our life's transitions will play out, and perhaps that is God's blessing. Throughout his life, Jesus knew of the suffering he would face on the cross, and he still chose to turn to the Father with his anguish, sorrow, and fear, and surrender to His will. Even fully understanding his impending crucifixion, Jesus modeled practicing faith to move forward in times of anxiety and uncertainty, to trust that God is working in our lives and that He will bestow crowns of beauty for ashes.

On today's show, I'm talking to Suhaiymah Manzoor Khan about her latest book, Seeing For Ourselves: And even stranger possibilities. Suhaiymah is one of the most thoughtful, intelligent and intro-spective people I know, and I absolutely love all the work she is doing and what she puts out into the world. Seeing For Ourselves feels quite different to Suhaiymah's other books, and offers more personal reflections on identity, faith, belonging, grief, love and activism. In her book, Suhaiymah encourages us to move beyond the white western gaze, and focus on the only gaze that really matters: that of Allah. Its such a powerful little book, forcing us to rethink our values, ideas and intentions, and encouraging us to embrace our true authentic selves, away from the gazes upon us. Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan is a writer, poet and educator disrupting understandings of history, race, knowledge and violence. She works to equip herself and others with the tools and faith to resist the unliveable conditions we find ourselves in, and work towards another reality.Suhaiymah's latest book, Seeing for Ourselves: And even stranger possibilities came out with Hajar Press in September 2023. Prior to this she authored Tangled in Terror: Uprooting Islamophobia (Pluto Press, 2022) which was widely endorsed by the likes of Lowkey, Moazzam Begg, Fatima Manji, Lola Olufemi and more.I really hope you enjoy this episode.
