PRP 007 Mini-Broadcast: Episode 8 – Diamonds Are Forever Since the beginning of the show, Brian has done his best to strong-arm discussion of Agent 007 into as many podcasts as he could. Finally he convinced Sarah to embark on a new mission: the Permanent Record Podcast 007 Mini-Broadcast! This occasional series from your friends Brian & Sarah started with "Dr. No" and will work its way up to the most recent Bond adventure, and on the way, it will discuss and critique all of the 007 theme songs and other relevant recordings. It's a dream come true for one of the hosts - and for Bond fans everywhere! In this 8th episode, Sarah and Brian are once again joined by Bond author Robbie Sims (Quantum of Silliness: The Peculiar World of Bond, James Bond), and the trio turn their attention to the 1971 movie, “Diamonds Are Forever.” This Bond outing sees the return of the original 007, Sean Connery, after George Lazenby stepped away from the role.  But Sir Sean isn't the only one who has returned after a hiatus from the films; the theme song is sung by Shirley Bassey, who was the voice behind the iconic “Goldfinger” theme and returns to lend her vocal talents to the “Diamonds Are Forever” title track.  Brian, Robbie, and Sarah have a lively discussion about the theme song and Dame Shirley, of course, but they cover other topics such as David Arnold's rendition of the song, the group Q: The Music, and Robbie's fabulous (but not too fabulous) t-shirt, as well as a bit of speculating on the future of the Bond franchise. It's fun for all—well, at least fun for some!  Shirley Bassey singing "Vivo di Diamanti" More info about the Shirley Bassey unreleased songs/rarities box set (currently delayed again) David Arnold - Diamonds Are Forever (featuring David McAlmont) Find Robbie Sims at https://www.instagram.com/quantumofsilliness https://bsky.app/profile/quantumofsilliness.bsky.social You can purchase Quantum of Silliness at https://thehistorypress.co.uk/publication/quantum-of-silliness/ or other reputable booksellers. Welcome to the second of our shows which discuss the James Bond films of the 1960's – a time when the ever-innocent Neil thought Pussy Galore was a gang of cats As a reminder back in 2020 we had a number of episodes with our American friend Elijah discussing these very Bond films.  Elijah had never seen a Bond film before we started that series and it was interesting to get his perspective of a series of films that are over 50 years old.  Judging from the correspondence we received, those shows were a hit with you, our listeners.  To conclude that series we were going to bring in a James Bond aficionado to give us his view on those auspicious beginnings for James Bond.  A big thank you to Jon Yates for his time and knowledge in the episodes which follow. In this second episode, we talk John Barry, Ken Adam and George Lazenby.  We also give Jon a challenge to design his personal choice of a 60's Sean Connery Bond film that never was. Like the films we hope our sometimes-irreverent talk amuses and entertains you. A brief word about Mr Jon Yates.  Not only is he a James Bond superfan, he is also a novelist.  His first novel Subliminal Roots, a murder mystery,  poses the fascinating question “How can one man kill two other men in the same way in different places at the same time?”  Check it out, a link for the novel is below. Also below is a link to Q The Music who provided the music you hear throughout the podcast.  Q The Music are on tour again this year and well worth going to see. Steve King The Superdep Bassist “This is Steve. Steve plays bass. Steve sings a bit as well.” …Of course, that's what he would have you believe but there is considerably more to him than that. Steve King has been a freelance musician and in “the business” for close to 30 years now and has built a reputation for being one of the most flexible and versatile bassists in the country with a handy sideline in vocals and a fantastic ear for harmony. Equally at home playing pop, rock, Latin, funk, jazz, pantomime and musical theatre on both bass guitar and double bass, Steve has made his name as a “SuperDep” - someone who can step in at the very last minute and make it sound like he has been performing with that band for several years. From his roots in Medway and the Kent Youth Jazz Orchestra Steve now gigs all over the world with “pretty much anyone who needs a bass player” but performs most regularly with former X-Factor contestant Ben Mills, David Alacey's Rat Pack tribute, Paul Da Vinci (The Rubettes, Tight Fit) and James Bond tribute orchestra Q The Music as well as frequent guest appearances with bands such as The Chillbillies and Norwich based function band Beat Connection. Past appearances have also included musical theatre shows Beyond The Barricade and Mad About The Musicals, Roy G Hemmings Dictionary of Soul, Suspiciously Elvis, ABBA Gold and big bands The Len Phillips Orchestra, String of Pearls and Five Star Swing. What makes the Bond musical ‘sound’? This week Warren Ringham of Q The Music returns to the show to talk about the James Bond sound and his life as a performer dedicated to 007. We discuss the challenge of composing an original Bond-esque song as Warren has just completed his first composition. Along the way we tackle mainstream journalists writing about Bond music; Bond themes as a snapshot of their musical era and embracing the contemporary; melody replaced by rhythm and ambiance in much modern film scoring; Newman’s scores and where to from here with Zimmer; and the atmospheric scoring of Moonraker, Thunderball and From Russia With Love. We then transition to Warren’s personal story, growing up in a musical family, attending Music college and then 15 years of building the Q the Music tribute band. He notes the particular challenge of arranging the Bond music for his group and his commitment to creating an authentic Bond sound; Q the Music’s little flourishes or takes on some of the Bond themes; the buzz of the live performance; writing and performing a 20 minute medley for the 50th Anniversary event at Piz Gloria; and what might happen if he met his musical hero. The recording took place in the UK and New Zealand.
