This week, I'm releasing a one-two punch of Judas Priest-related films. On today's episode, I'm joined by EVAN 'FUNK' DAVIES, legendary DJ on WFMU, who brings us a Heavy Metal Parking Lot-adjacent film to discuss today: ROCK STAR (loosely based on the story of Tim "Ripper" Owens, who replaced Rob Halford of Judas Priest after being in a Judas Priest cover band)..We also talk about the NYC club scene of the late 70s and early 80s, take a jealous look back at the club calendars at that era, how scared I was to visit NYC for the first time, AM radio vs FM radio, WFMU, has there ever been a good movie about being a DJ,DJing your high school cafeteria, seeing the film ROCK STAR on opening day with only one other person in the theater, the saga of "Ripper" Owens, Dominic West of The Wire & Timothy Olyphant of Deadwood playing rock gods in the film, the difference between a tribute band and a cover band, passive aggressively kicking people out of bands, Mark Wahlberg as the lead singer of the fictional band Steel Dragon, and his ever-changing accent, how I was in a Guided By Voices cover band before joining the real Guided By Voices, the mindset of the parents in the film who let Steel Dragon play their oil refinery, seeing bands fight on stage, Jennifer Aniston as the manager in the film, the many problematic scenes in the film, the trouble with loving bands that have drastic lineup changes, Cheap Trick, the amazing story of the film coming to the screen, Pussy Galore tribute bands, seeing Television live, how the end of this film has one of the dumbest endings of all time, how some of the movie's fake metal songs actually rule and so much more.REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Bob Bert in conversation with David Eastaugh Based in Hoboken, New Jersey, Bert initially came to prominence as drummer for the experimental rock band Sonic Youth during the early to mid-1980s. Bert played on the Sonic Youth releases Confusion Is Sex, Sonic Death, and Bad Moon Rising. After Bad Moon Rising, Bert quit the group. Bert contributed during the last half of the 1980s as percussionist for noise band Pussy Galore. In the early 1990s, Bert drummed for the Chrome Cranks (which also included Peter Aaron on vocals; Jerry Teel on bass; and William Weber on stun guitar). After the dissolution of the Cranks, Bert joined forces with guitarist Kid Congo, guitarist Jack Martin, bassist/vocalist Jerry Teel and organist Barry London in the rootsy New York City band Knoxville Girls.
Dan, Melissa and Deadalus. Melissa Galliani and Daedalus Howell are our guests on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger today. Melissa Galliani is the GM of Wine Country Radio. Deadalus Howell is the editor of the North Bay Bohemian and some other local publications. He is also a frequent guest on The Drive with the Boho Buzz, a regular feature of what's currently in the paper. Lisa Santos, the advertising director of The Bohemian, is also in. This is Bay Area Burger Week. Co-incidentally, Dan Berger wrote an article this week about hamburger meat and hamburger sandwiches. There is just one vowel of difference between burger and Berger! There is a promotion with restaurants that have specials throughout the 12-day "week." Daedalus has a trivia question for listeners, which is, what actor played the part of McDonald's entrepreneur Ray Kroc in the movie The Founder? Listener Kelley knew that answer is Michael Keaton and she wins the prize. Later we will ask who played Pussy Galore in Goldfinger? Honor Blackman is the answer. After all the banter, the wines. Terry Damskey from Dehlinger Winery could not come in as scheduled today. So Dan Berger has brought a few wines from Bottle Barn for tasting and discussion. The first one tasted is a Washington state wine which was at Bottle Barn for a mere $4.99. Today is the first day of summer, so there will be a lot of whites (and Rosés) on the show. California Wine Country is brought to you by Rodney Strong Vineyards and Davis Bynum Wines. Then they taste a 2022 Babich Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. It is on sale at a close-out price at Bottle Barn. There is also a Cinsault from Lodi, California. The winery is called Jesse's Grove. They have their own vineyards, some of which are original vines planted in 1886. They have some of the oldest Cinsault grapes in the world. Finally, Ammunition is a Sonoma County Pinot Noir.

Welcome back to the Drinks and a Movie Podcast! In this third episode of my James Bond series, I'm diving into Goldfinger (1964), one of the most iconic entries in the Bond franchise. With its unforgettable villain, Auric Goldfinger, and characters like Odd Job and Pussy Galore, this film is a true classic that helped shape the Bond formula we all know and love. For this episode, I'm pairing the action-packed spy thriller with Weller Full Proof, a bold and powerful bourbon that packs a punch, much like the film itself. At 114 proof, this bourbon has the richness and complexity to match the high-stakes adventure on screen.Tune in as we explore why Goldfinger remains a fan favorite and discuss some of its standout moments. Grab your drink, sit back, and let's experience another thrilling chapter in the 007 saga!
The school year has started here in Colorado, so we're adjusting to life after summer break. Maybe it's a parents' break then? This week's movie, Cockneys vs Zombies, puts our two main characters in a real pickle. Their grandad's retirement home is about to be closed. They need cash to try to save it. So, what should they do? Assemble an Oceans 11-style crew of East End Dufuses (except for Katy, she seems pretty bright) to rob a bank. When their plan inevitably fails, they're just about to get nicked when...A GOD DAMNED ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE BREAKS OUT. Now they've really stepped in it. They've got to get way with the cash and save grandad and his friends from certain death. Oh yeah, Honor Blackman is in this. She was Pussy Galore in Goldfinger (1964). Cockneys vs Zombies final grade: Steve Another well done zombie flick. Interesting characters, good humor, and decent writing make this a movie well worth your time. Less-than-spectacular gore effects get then knocked down a peg. 4.13/5.0 Brandon This one hits in all the right places. It falls a bit short of Dead Snow, but still a well-done, entertaining horr-medy. Dialogue and sight-gags combine to make a good-quality flick that is easily re-watchable. Guns, guts, and a punted baby. What more could you ask for? 4.48/5 Cocktail of the Week: Bramble 2 oz Gin 1 oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice A little squirty of simple syrup 1/2 oz Blackberry Liqueur Combine gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker and shake to chill. Strain over ice in a rocks glass. Float blackberry liqueur on top to create two-tone effect. Cocktail Grade: Another pleasant spin on the "Liquor X/Sour" combination, of which we are a fan. We did add a little club soda on a subsequent round and that did seem to take it up a notch. Maybe berry liqueurs work better, for us, with a few bubbbles? 4.4/5 ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/support
GGACP salutes the absorbing and informative new book by our pal Thom Shubilla, "James Bond and the Sixties Spy Craze," by revisiting this memorable mini-ep from 2016, featuring James Bond fun facts and tantalizing 007 trivia. In this episode: Roger Moore shares the screen with Bernie Schwartz, Johnny Rivers scores a hit with "Secret Agent Man," Gilbert obsesses over Jewish Bond baddies (and Jewish Bond girls) and the boys bid a fond farewell to Napoleon Solo. PLUS: Hank Scorpio! Sammy Davis Jr's lost cameo! Six Degrees of Yaphet Kotto! Pussy Galore's flying circus! And Gilbert warbles “License to Kill”! Learn more about your ad choices. Sixty years, this might have very well been released as THE first franchise blockbuster. It was the third entry in the James Bond franchise (adapted from a series of best-selling spy novels authored by Ian Fleming) which had been rapidly growing in popularity around the world. Helmed by then up-and-coming British director Guy Hamilton, it featured the return of James Bond, Agent 007 of the British Secret Service, once again played by the late great Sir Sean Connery. This time around, he's on a unique mission mostly set within the United States, trying to investigate and eventually take down a plot by the titular Auric Goldfinger (Gert Frobe) to potentially take control of the worldwide gold market....and it just gets crazier from there with henchmen named Odd Job, mysterious women named Pussy Galore, and a spanking new Aston Martin DB5 featuring lots of cool new gadgets. :) Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Front Row Classics takes it's first look at the James Bond franchise by celebrating the 60th anniversary of what many consider the ultimate Bond film. Emmett Stanton joins Brandon to celebrate 1964's Goldfinger. Brandon and Emmett discuss the unending charisma of Sean Connery as 007. We also celebrate the iconic performances of Gert Frobe as Auric Goldfinger, Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore and Harold Sakata as Oddjob. This is the film where many of the permanent elements of the franchise came together in spectacular fashion. We also celebrate the unforgettable theme song sung by Dame Shirley Bassey.
This week we talked to the legendary musician Bob Bert of Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Lydia Lunch Retrovirus & Bewitched, who picked the equally legendary Danny Fields documentary, Danny Says, to discuss. We talk about Danny's trials with the bands he loved and discovered (including The Stooges, MC5, Jonathan Richman & The Ramones); the notion of chance meetings in art; Danny breaking the news of John Lennon saying ‘The Beatles are bigger than Jesus Christ' and the aftermath he created for them; changing a guitar string without stopping playing a song; 16 Magazine; Bob's early shows seeing Suicide, Wayne County, Patti Smith, New York Dolls & Television; the greatness of Dead Moon & The Scientists; WFMU; shoplifting MC5 records; the Super 8mm punk document Blank Generation; how he joined both Sonic Youth & Pussy Galore; Rock Scene magazine, the genesis of the Pussy Galore drum set he built and how it hurts to play it, his process with publishing BB Gun Magazine, doing drugs and seeing Pink Floyd, unsung NYC band heroes, planning out your whole week around rock shows, Max's Kansas City and why we haven't gotten a Jonathan Richman documentary yet!So, let's roll our eyes along with the singular force that changed music forever on this week's Revolutions Per Movie.BOB BERT:https://goner-records.com/products/im-just-drummer-bob-bert-book-hozacInstagram: @therealbobbertLIMITED EDITION REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE SHIRT:revolutionspermovie.bandcamp.comREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Welcome to the second of our shows which discuss the James Bond films of the 1960's – a time when the ever-innocent Neil thought Pussy Galore was a gang of cats As a reminder back in 2020 we had a number of episodes with our American friend Elijah discussing these very Bond films. Elijah had never seen a Bond film before we started that series and it was interesting to get his perspective of a series of films that are over 50 years old. Judging from the correspondence we received, those shows were a hit with you, our listeners. To conclude that series we were going to bring in a James Bond aficionado to give us his view on those auspicious beginnings for James Bond. A big thank you to Jon Yates for his time and knowledge in the episodes which follow. In this second episode, we talk John Barry, Ken Adam and George Lazenby. We also give Jon a challenge to design his personal choice of a 60's Sean Connery Bond film that never was. Like the films we hope our sometimes-irreverent talk amuses and entertains you. A brief word about Mr Jon Yates. Not only is he a James Bond superfan, he is also a novelist. His first novel Subliminal Roots, a murder mystery, poses the fascinating question “How can one man kill two other men in the same way in different places at the same time?” Check it out, a link for the novel is below. Also below is a link to Q The Music who provided the music you hear throughout the podcast. Q The Music are on tour again this year and well worth going to see. Thank you Jon and Warren. And to everyone else, see you on the next show or At The Flicks
Ciao.
Steve is in a mood and Marijn is suffering big time... We are trying to identify all the end-user apps that need governance and adoption and how much work is required. Marijn says all Outlook versions are the same and don't need re-training, but Steve is being an arse and saying the difference is important.Marijn is slowly getting convinced to listen in and check how Steve bullies him into believing that he is right... yes, feel sorry for him.Steve says “ I do apologise, brother, I gave you a hard time” ... “But it was fun recording this” We decide that there are loads of Apps and nearly impossible an export all of them except Yannick who has a superpower as a member of the M365 Force. The conclusion is that we try and count the total applications and don't reach a conclusion because the number is huge (in context) and stopped counting at 80+ and started to really panic when we suddenly realised we had not considered Apple, Android and Mobile apps. The boys finish by going Cheap with their whisky bought on the way back from South Coast Summit and on the boat... they found a bargain... White Cask is a Speyside Malt which surprises both of them.

Notable for the wonderful stop-motion animation effects of Ray Harryhausen, the film also stars Honor Blackman who went on to her own iconic work as "Cathy Gale" in "The Avengers" British tv series and "Pussy Galore" in "Goldfinger."Sean Marlon Newcombe and Dr. Gary Stickel discuss this legendary film.
Julian Brigden of MI2 Partners returns to the podcast to cast a considered eye over the macro landscape. With a litle help from Xenia Onatopp, Plenty O'Toole and Pussy Galore, Julian explains why James Bond movies offer useful clues to aid our understanding of current conditions and why investors may not be as invincible as they perhaps believe themselves to be. YOU'RE GONNA LISTEN TO THE BASS PLAYER. The Spindle is back for the new year, and this week on the show Marc and John drop the needle on the Melvins' single "Night Goat" b/w "Adolescent Wet Dream." Released in 1992 by Amphetamine Reptile Records, this 7" exemplifies the odd sophistication of the Melvins, reveling in extreme volume, absurdist poetry, and overblown attitude. The single's A-side, "Night Goat," would go on to become one of the band's signature songs; it was re-recorded for the band's major label debut Houdini and is a longstanding staple of the band's raucous live shows. The B-side is curious, too: the original comes from garage punk band Pussy Galore, whose leader Jon Spencer would go on to form The Blues Explosion. Is it grunge? Is it doom? Is it alternative? Who cares: it's Melvins. Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. More podcasts and videos at WASTOIDS.com | Follow us on Instagram and YouTube.

“I don't think you could get away with something like that today!” You're not coffee'.

Richard Maibaum Papers at the University of Iowa Richard Maibaum, who wrote many of the James Bond movie screenplays, donated his papers to the University of Iowa. Pete Balestrieri is the curator for Science Fiction and Pop Culture at the University of Iowa Library. Join Dan and Tom as they have a discussion with Pete on the Richard Maibaum Papers. This collection includes a large selection of Maibaum's working materials he used to write 13 James Bond movies. Pete shares his insights into many topics on the development of the movies. For instance, he talks about Sean Connery's thoughts on the role of Pussy Galore in Goldfinger and what Richard Maibaum did because of those thoughts. One fascinating part of the collection is the research folders. These contain articles that Maibaum clipped out on a variety of topics he researched for plot points. For instance, there is an article on blimps which he clipped out 3 years before A View To A Kill came out. But, to us, probably the most interesting part of the collection are the treatments that Maibaum wrote. These are the stories before they are turned into screenplays. As a result, you get to see how the story evolves, sometimes dramatically. It is very cool to read a movie's treatments and see the evolution of the movie's story. It's not just James Bond Another key point of the disucssion is that the James Bond materials are only part of the collection. Richard Maibaum wrote many other movies and plays. While you are there you can see some of Maibaum's notes on his other projects including includes OSS, The Great Gatsby, and Tank Force. Pete discusses the collection, how you can see it and other collections they have at the Library such as the papers from Norman Felton who produced The Man From U.N.C.L.E. This is a wide-ranging, fun discussion. Pete knows his movie and shares his passion for them in this interview. Show Notes Sean Connery is Bond, James Bond this week as we watched Goldfinger from 1964. Not too rapey and also not too good at being a spy, Sean Connery slinks his way through this film in white dinner jackets, terrycloth onsies and a tan and manages to save the day, through no fault of his own. Pussy Galore, Oddjob, and “No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!” are just some of the true icons from this reverse heist, the third Bond film which trades in an unexpected amount of fun with a villain who is totally fine with killing tens of thousands of people in a single go. Rachel and I discuss our personal top 6 struggles in our divorce recovery process. It was fun from the get go. And, as usual, the craziness is infused in the podcast. Because we believe laughter is a necessary part of life. With our top 6 being the silent treatment, anger control, building walls, feeling pretty, sex as a weapon, and arguing for no fricken reason - the show goes pretty deep into the divorce recovery realm. Topics of journaling again, the anteater vibrator, the Divorce Devil Cookie, Pussy Galore, pity party of the year, Janet Jackson - Control, almost like the Frye Festival, necrophilia vs narcolepsy, a divorce martyr, needing help accepting help, getting that pretty back and sugar is sweet all are thoroughly discussed in this episode. We do end the show with a plea for anyone with even a hint of ending life prematurely, reach out to someone and or the National Suicide Prevention Hotline attached below. I'm speaking to rock 'n' roll royalty on this episode – the great Jon Spencer, of Pussy Galore, Boss Hog, Heavy Trash, and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion – and now, Jon Spencer & the Hitmakers, whose new album, the excellent, wild, weird, strange and characteristically uncouth, Spencer Gets It Lit, is out now. Have you ever wondered how many times Jon Spencer has said in his life BLUUUUUUES EXPLOSION? Wonder no more. His favourite ever Sex Pistols song? I've got you covered. What he was doing when the world fell off its axis? We get into a bit of that too. The audio is a bit scratchier than usual - hey, rock 'n' roll doesn't come bubble-wrapped baby - but I hope you find this episode somewhere near as enjoyable an experience as I had speaking to one of my favourite ever songwriters and performers. The "Bond Girl" has been an archetype, showing up in every James Bond novel and movie in the franchise's almost 70 years of history. In the 1950s and 1960s, these women fit a certain stereotype, they were the love interests of Bond and had names such as Pussy Galore or Holly Goodhead, reflecting the sexual revolution taking place at the time. But as time goes on and the feminist movement picks up steam, the "Bond Girl" role begins to change. In this podcast, Marie speaks with Dr. Phillip Guerty, Associate Professor of History at the University of North Georgia and lifelong Bond fan, about what the "Bond Girls" can tell us about the sexual revolution and the feminist movement in the late 20th century.
In 1988, Pussy Galore released a tape covering the entire Exile on Main Street. Not long after that, the Minneapolis trio Zuzu's Petals performed their own cover of a Stones song at the 400 Club.
Jon Spencer talks about the rise of the HITmakers and their outspoken, noisy, and reflective new album, Spencer Gets It Lit, recalling the sound of Pussy Galore, the end of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, remembering Dallas Good, working with the Sadies, and chaotic studio sessions they shared with Andre Williams, encountering James Brown, future plans, and more! Bob Bert was part of a stellar generation that got to see the likes of The Talking Heads, The Cramps, The Gun Club, Ramones, just to name a few, come up in the mid/late 70s New York. Bert witnessed some of the most influential bands, but also participated in some of the most influential bands of his generation. That being Sonic Youth in the early/mid 80's. I can honestly say without a shred of doubt, that Sonic Youth are one of my favorite groups, so the honor and privilege to speak to this legend was simply mind blowing! After Sonic Youth, Bert went on to participate in groups such as Pussy Galore, Bewitched, Chrome Cranks and Lydia Lunch. Available in multiple compendiums, single issues, & more. Goldfinger, The 1964 third installment of the EON-produced 007 James Bond franchise, starring Sean Connery at the height of his prowess & charisma. While undoubtedly problematic for its portrayal of women and Koreans (specifically, characters Pussy Galore & Odd Job), the film also cemented the now trademark Bond formula of gadgets, close calls, & big action set pieces. It is considered by many to be the quintessential Bond film. Available on Hulu & more. Call of Duty: Warzone, Introduced on March 10, 2020, this free-to-play Battle Royale style game takes the incredibly popular Call of Duty FPS franchise in a slightly new direction by limiting game modes and utilizing large scale (shrinking) maps to give players room to collect cash, weaponry, and fight each other off. Battle Royale (2000), Literally the film by which most other works in this genre are named for and/or reference (see COD: Warzone above). Directed by Kinji Fukasaku and based on a book by Koushun Takami, the film follows the kill or be-killed antics of a group of delinquent school children. Highly controversial upon release for its violence & gore, it has gone on to such cult fame that it is essentially a widely popular film. Available here.
