We had the pleasure of interviewing Lafemmebear over Zoom video! As an up-and-coming producer, Mitchell worked alongside producers for Boyz II Men, Grammy-winners The Jackie Boyz, Eric Dawkins of The Underdogs, Polo Molina of Will. I. Am/The Black Eyed Peas, and Interscope Records producers from Nelly's songwriting team. When she came out as a transgender woman in 2013, she was effectively blacklisted from the industry despite her skill and accomplishments, including a 2012 Grammy win for album engineering. This only prompted Mitchell to take her music into her own hands under the name Lafemmebear in 2018. The arrival of her first indie release, Blaq* A Note to the World, showed that her sound has evolved into a genre-blending experience speaking to the trials of Black queer, trans femmes. The music video for the EP single "SHUTUP! (feat. Bella King)" premiered on Billboard.com in March of 2019; she subsequently became the first Black trans woman to headline the state of Utah's Pride Festival in June, performing original music to an audience of over 60,000. Her words and work have since been featured by The Guardian, MTV News, GLAAD, Queerty, Out.Tv Euro, and Autostraddle. Her first full album, Blaq: the Story of Me, premiered Fall 2019 and is available on all platforms. She is composing, mixing, and sound designing part of the original score for Alice Sheppard and Kinetic Light's new work WIRED. In 2020 she collaborated with PEG Records, Cody Belew, and Dustin Ransom to co-write and produce the first mainstream Pop-R&B single “What You're Looking For” for Rupaul's Drag Race's Peppermint. She and Peppermint later collaborated with Mila Jam in a remake of Sounds of Blackness' "Optimistic," an anthem for Trans Day of Remembrance 2020. In February 2021 she opened for Chika at Stanford University's Black Love concert, premiering songs from her new EP titled My Blaq Feels. We want to hear from you! Everyone has a story. He gets them to tell it. Lori's delighted to welcome broadcast veteran Aron Bender to do a little east coast swing as they sing the praises of Boyz II Men's 1991 breakout album, Cooleyhighharmony. Laugh along with these high school buddies as they chat "sexy sex songs," divo behavior, Aron's B2M-adjacent boy band days (and epic Michael McCary impression), and the "cool kid club" they created as nerdy freshman. Later, cry along with these two old friends as they discuss the importance of normalizing male emotion, the pain of losing everything, and the bittersweet journey to learn about life and love in the process. Get to know Aron Bender: Aron Bender hosts The Aron Bender Podcast and The Santa Clarita Valley Signal News Podcast. He's also a professor in the Journalism Department at his alma mater, Cal State Northridge, and worked at radio stations KMPH in Fresno, WIOD in Miami, and KFI in Los Angeles. Aron lost his wife to breast cancer in 2020. They have two wonderful, smart and funny daughters: 9-year-old Marin and 6-year-old Wiley. Interview with SZNS

Bringin' it Backwards

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 30, 2021 38:29

We had the pleasure of interviewing SZNS over Zoom video! Los Angeles based pop-quartet SZNS premiered the music video for new single “Build A Boy” recently with People Magazine. Now SZNS are following up with the TV debut of the music video for “Build A Boy” with MTV's Spankin' Brand New. SZNS give a fresh take on the classic 90's girl group music we all know and love with blending elements EDM, Latin-synth, and House inspired beats. The single was written by SZNS along with Stefan Litrownik (One Direction, Boyz II Men) and Jason Hahs, with production by K-Kov & Stefan Lit . Each member Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn bring their own unique vocals and styles that blend together to create the vibrant SZNS sound. Their conversational lyricism stems from the four's collaborative writing style - a late night kitchen heart-to-heart. Their relatable and empowering tracks call to not only girls and women, but anyone regardless of their gender, race or sexual origination that might be feeling pressured into submission to address and disrupt the status quo. Now following the successful release of “Build A Boy,” that included a billboard in Time Square, SZNS is ready to hit the road to bring their live performance to fans across the US. When asked about their new single “Build A Boy” SZNS's said, “When we came together to write Build a Boy, the energy in the studio was a bit different from our usual confident selves. We were all feeling very vulnerable and even a little lonely. Each of us has experienced a relationship that wasn't fulfilling us mentally, physically and/or spiritually. Build a Boy is our way of saying I deserve more than the bare minimum & I have to do what's best for me. We realized some people are only in your life for a reason or a season and if you want the perfect partner, you have to find that within yourself first, because you can't Build a Boy.” In order to better understand SZNS, one must first understand the unique personalities of each member Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn and how their names uniquely play into seasons they represent.  Winter for instance is your shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, and your biggest advocate, someone who is there for you during those tough times. All Spring wants in life is to connect and heal people through her music, using her talents to help others grow through her art similar to how the showers of April bring help to bring the beautiful flowers of May. Autumn on the other hand is troublemaker of the group, some might see her tough exterior but those closest to her in SZNS know she's a real softie, you may find her out on town on Friday night but you have just a good chance of finding her curled up on the couch watching NetFlix. While Summer is known for being the bubbliest of the group, and can be found dancing everywhere she goes bringing her energy that turns even your darkest times to a bright sunny day. Together these four personalities come together to create the fresh high energy sound of SZNS.  With this in mind SZNS are getting ready to release a series of four EP's each specifically crafted for each member/season, emanating power, vulnerability, wit, and reality ranging from bass dropping dance beats to sultry ballads! After returning from a Boyz II Men concert, Dave gets all nostalgic for 90s music, and reflects on a line from the first Christian song he ever heard - a song from the 90s. In that song, the lead singer of the group Arrested Development sings a prayer to God, saying, “I know you're supposed to be my steering wheel, and not just my spare tire.” That idea is also the core theme of the story of Abraham this week, who cedes the “steering wheel” of his life over to God, letting Him drive. Steve stops by to talk about the “four motives” which typically drive the car of our lives (acceptance, power, control and comfort) and how each person usually has one that's dominant that we have to submit to God so that He can drive. And then, in Bible Nerd Out Time, Sarah K. Lee stops by to talk about the word “faith” and explains some Biblical Greek scholarship that can help us understand this very mushy word better in a way that “drives” us forward.

1991 was an incredible year in music, but it often gets sold short in the music press. When people relfect on the year in music, it's usuallly reduced to something like "Nirvana released Nevermind and all other music died". That couldn't be further from the truth and the IGP Crew is here to discuss it. This is the first of two episodes where we break down many other huge releases from 1991 across all genres. In this first half, we take a stroll from January through June stopping along the way to give credit to the heavy hitting albums that dropped. Queen, R.E.M., Mr. Big, Skid Row, Anthrax, Boyz II Men, Van Halen, NWA and many more are all along for the ride. Debut albums? Check. Now legendary albums? Check. Final albums? Check. Game changing albums? Check. It's all here and that's just for starters. While Nirvana's Nevermind LP did in fact go on to change the landscape of the music scene, the fact is that there's just a lot more to 1991 then that. Come with us as Russ, Michelle & Kyle walk you through the first half of one of the biggest years in the history of music. It's Season 4 (yes Michelle, we're still in Season 4) Episode 7 of the guy who usually writes our descriptions but is dealing with a ridiculous power outage, also known as The Bumper's favorite music podcast and as he would say: LET'S GO!!Keep up with all of the music we talk about in each episode by listening to the Infectious Groove Podcast Companion Songs playlist, exclusively on Spotify.

The Osmonds “The Plan" (1973) The platitudes are vague enough, the admonishments placid enough, the complaints about society inoffensive enough. Kolob was/is a Mormon magical land with...never mind. Look it up. Kolob Records was the exclusive domain of the Osmond family (Jimmy, too--in fact he was making records in Japan as early as 1969 and his hit in the US, "Long-Haired Lover From Liverpool" featured The Mike Curb Congregation, which we have played on this show many times) and in 1973 Kolob released this. It's very professionally done. There's instrumental virtuosity in many styles. Makes for a pretty good listen once or twice, but I think it ruined their credibility in the younger market. Both "Goin' Home" and "Let Me In" reached #36 on the Billboard chart. This album didn't reach #50.  POACA might recall that at one time The Osmonds roamed the teeny-bopper landscape free of predators, and actually charted 4 Top 10 hits. I thought it was more. And my sister bought every Tiger Beat and Teen Beat magazine she could find. Always Donny's toothy grin. And she also bought a few Osmond albums, including this one. I want the one they released ONLY in Japan, The Wonderful World Of The Osmonds. Because I love that shit. My birthday is coming up in 10 months. Might as well? Both Donny and Marie would try to change their images down the road, but when this came out, it was really the beginning of the end for any question of artistic integrity.  War In Heaven Traffic In My Mind Before The Beginning Movie Man Let Me In One Way Ticket To Anywhere Are You Up There It's Alright Mirror, Mirror Darlin' The Last Days Goin' Home Lou Christie Selections from "Paint America Love" (1971) I came across this album when I was heavy into Q Magazine out of England. They did an article about it and I tried to find my own copy. And I like it. I find that Lou Christie is just a little different, a little more daring than his contemporaries. He tried and failed at much, but what hit, I really love. I will never not be fascinated by Paint America Love.  Look Out The Window Wood Child Paint America Love Buddy and Cathy Rich - The Beat Goes On (1967) Dyke and the Blazers - Let a Woman Be a Woman, Let A Man Be A Man (1969)  Funk band formed in 1965 in Phoenix, Arizona. Best known for their 1966 hit single Funky Broadway, later even more successfully covered by Wilson Pickett. The band was disbanded when bandleader "Dyke" Arlester Christian was shot to death in 1971. Eddie and Dutch - My Wife The Dancer (1970) G. C. Cameron - If You Don't Love Me (1974) Written by Stevie Wonder. G. C. sang both lead parts on The Spinners' big hit, 1970's "It's a Shame", co-written and produced by Stevie, and remained with Motown as a solo artist when The Spinners left Motown in 1971. Although Cameron was not a major-seller for the label, he did have a hit with "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday", the theme song of the 1975 film Cooley High, which was later covered to great success by Boyz II Men. Gene Vincent - Be Bop A Lula '69 (1969) Produced by our friend Kim Fowley.  Lou Christie - Genesis and the Third Verse (1968) I love Lou's collabs with his Gypsy pal, Twyla Herbert. Herbert was born in Riverside, California. Christie was 15 years old when he met Herbert, a "bohemian gypsy, psychic, and former concert pianist," at an audition in a church basement in his hometown, Glenwillard, Pennsylvania. She was over 20 years older than him, with flaming red hair, a self-described clairvoyant and mystic who allegedly predicted which of their songs would become hits. They co-wrote "Lightning Strikes".  The Jackson Five - Doctor My Eyes (1973) Yes, The Jackson Five covered Jackson Browne.  John Travolta - Razzamatazz (1976) Julie London - Louie Louie (1969) King Crimson - Cirkus (1971) Renaissance - Can You Understand (1973)
