It had a budget of just $1 million, a lead actor wearing a toupee, and the baddie in the first draft of the script was a monkey. But the first James Bond film, ‘Dr. No', which began shooting in Jamaica on 16th January, 1962, kicked off a phenomenally successful franchise that's still a staple of cinema today. Its star, Sean Connery, had been picked out by producers after his appearance in a Disney production, but was marketed as a former lorry driver with little acting experience. Concerned that Connery lacked the sophistication of Bond's background, director Terence Young took him on a tour of swish casinos, posh members clubs and his Savile Row tailors. In this episode of Cracking the Code of Spy Movies, Dan and Tom uncover the hidden history of pre-title sequences long before James Bond ever ordered a martini. We look at pre-title sequences – before James Bond and Beyond. Although the 007 franchise made the pre-title or "cold open" world-famous, it certainly didn't invent the idea. Today, we take you on a deep, cinematic journey exploring when pre-title sequences really began, how filmmakers used them, and why they evolved into one of the most iconic elements of modern filmmaking. What we examine: We break down pre-title sequences starting in the 1930s through more modern movies, including film noir innovations, experimental openings from classic Hollywood, and surprising influences that shaped the James Bond formula. You'll hear examples from Double Indemnity, The Killers, D.O.A., The Great Train Robbery, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, North by Northwest, Psycho, and more. We even examine the fascinating proto-Bond styles found in Viennese Nights (1930), The Public Enemy, King Kong, and other early films that used storytelling before the title card. Then we explore how EON Productions transformed the cold open into a cinematic event. Starting with From Russia with Love (1963), the Bond franchise turned the pre-title sequence into a mini-story before the story, complete with action, intrigue, a fake-out death, and a seamless transition into the iconic Bond title design. Join Dan and Tom as they decode some James Bond influences from History and Literature.  Hint: Proust, Dostoevsky, and others may have played a part. Christopher Booker's “Seven Basic Plots” identifies the seven main plots that literature tends to stick to.  So, we look at some classic literature and its effect on the James Bond movies.  Consequently, there aren't very many different plots to contend with, and Eon Productions has retold the same plot multiple times in their movies.  What we will decode in this episode: ·         How do Proust's works parallel a character in the last two James Bond movies? There are multiple ways this character is paralleled in Proust's writing. ·         Can Tom stay awake while reading literature? ·         What real-world characters have helped shape the James Bond movies? ·         What themes in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE's Tania Romanova do we see carried over in future James Bond movies? ·         Who are some of the real-world characters who influence Ian Fleming's writings? ·         Do any of the James Bond movie characters have literary influences? ·         Do Purvis and Wade deserve any credit for CASINO ROYALE's literary influences? ·         And of course, much more. To sum up, there are many characters in literature and history that may have influenced some of the characters we find in the James Bond movies.
