2005 crime-comedy film directed by Shane Black

We'll spin around and wag our tails for a treat -- we're kinda shameless that way here at Breakfast All Day. October begins with reviews of three very different films: GOOD BOY, a lean and clever horror movie told from a dog's perspective. Indy, who's director and co-writer Ben Leonberg's own retriever, is actually the best boy. And in case you're worried: He's OK at the end. In theaters. PLAY DIRTY, a listless action comedy from director and co-writer Shane Black, who's had a much better track record with this kind of movie in the past ("Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," "The Nice Guys"). Mark Wahlberg and LaKeith Stanfield lead an ensemble cast. Streaming on Prime Video, but you should avoid it. ARE WE GOOD?, an intimate documentary that looks at the life and career of comedian and "WTF Podcast" host Marc Maron. In particular, it focuses on how he's working through grief after the death of his girlfriend, filmmaker Lynn Shelton. We liked this. In theaters. Next week is nuts, with about eight movies coming out that have awards potential, or at least year-end buzz. So keep your ears open, and we'll help guide you through this busy time. Thanks for being here. Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
In this episode of the No Film School Podcast, host GG Hawkins sits down with legendary screenwriter and director Shane Black, known for iconic films like Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, The Nice Guys, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The two dive deep into Black's creative process, his latest project Play Dirty (an adaptation of Donald Westlake's Parker novels), and how his filmmaking journey and sobriety have shaped his vision. From staying true to source material while adding his unique voice, to building character-driven action scenes and navigating Hollywood with integrity and purpose, Shane shares invaluable insights for filmmakers at every stage. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guest Shane Black discuss... What drew Shane to the Parker novels and how he approached adapting them The balance between honoring Westlake's tone and injecting Shane's signature wit How to structure complex stories while preserving ambiguity and character depth Creating blue-collar, competent anti-heroes as a more grounded alternative to spy thrillers The role of pre-visualization, animatics, and spontaneity on set How Shane leads a creative and collaborative environment with his cast and crew The power of post-production and the art of shaping the final story in the edit Building creative stamina and the importance of structure in a writer's day Advice for filmmakers entering a fear-based industry with confidence and authenticity The impact of sobriety and self-awareness on creativity and leadership Memorable Quotes: "Parker is a lot of things. Sentimental is not one of them." "You're comparing your insides with their outside. So they look great... So are they." "You don't die from a feeling.” "Be so good they can't ignore you." The underworld is crowded with thieves, but Parker has always stood apart. Created by Donald Westlake in the early 1960s, the character has been portrayed on screen by actors including Lee Marvin, Mel Gibson, and Jason Statham. He's a blunt-force professional who isn't Bond, isn't Batman, but something rougher, hungrier, and coded by his own ruthless blue-collar sense of order. With "Play Dirty," filmmaker Shane Black takes his own crack at Parker, bringing the character to Prime Video on October 1 and casting Mark Wahlberg in the role. The film follows Parker, a ruthless thief, and his expert crew who stumble onto the heist of a lifetime that pits them against the New York mob. The film also stars LaKeith Stanfield, Rosa Salazar, Keegan-Michael Key, Nat Wolff, and more. This version doesn't come with gadgets or acrobatics. Black describes a Parker who thinks fast, hits harder, and feels closer to the blue-collar world than to the spy fantasy. It's the kind of material that lets him indulge his taste for pulp grit, sly humor, and the holiday backdrop he's made famous. But it also opens the door to some bigger questions: what draws audiences to men this uncompromising? How do you make crime fun without sanding off the edges? And what happens when you cast Wahlberg instead of Robert Downey Jr.?READ MORE: ‘All Of You': Brett Goldstein On Love, The Science of Soulmates, ‘Shrinking' Surprises, & ‘Ted Lasso' [The Discourse Podcast]Writer/Director Shane Black joins The Discourse to talk about the journey of bringing his Parker film to the screen, which started all the way back during the making of Black's first film, “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” in 2005. When asked what itch hadn't been scratched by earlier adaptations, Black pointed to Parker's uniqueness. “Each one represents the era in which it was produced. 'Point Blank' with Lee Marvin is a very specific film for that time period. And each actor who's played Parker from there on, like Robert Duvall, Jason Statham, and Mel Gibson in "Payback." There has been a history of incarnations of this powerful, relentless character. But he's not James Bond, which is why I liked him. He's sort of blue collar. It's almost like an American entrepreneur's story. But he happens to be a really awful, bad person and a criminal anti-hero.”
Shane Black (writer/director, Play Dirty, The Nice Guys, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang; writer, Lethal Weapon,The Last Boy Scout) returns to discuss his connection to Donald Westlake, the writer on whose work Play Dirty is based, what he and his co-writers each bring to a script, how he pushes through imposter syndrome, respectful but playful actors, how production is just "shopping for ingredients," and lots more.Listen to the last time Shane visited the podcast in 2016 on Apple podcasts or wherever you get your pods. The Thrilling Adventure Hour celebrates its 20th anniversary with shows in NY and London!Come see Paul F. "Is it School of Rock, High Fidelity, or Jumanji? What truly defines Jack Black's most iconic performance?"Ben Rogers, Jeff “Skin” Wade, Kevin “KT” Turner, and Krystina Ray dive headfirst into The Ringer's list of the 101 Best Movie Performances of the 21st Century, picking up at #73 and working their way through a cinematic rollercoaster of debate, nostalgia, and hilarious hot takes. From Jack Black's soulful scream in School of Rock to Val Kilmer's noir turn in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the crew passionately (and sometimes chaotically) breaks down each actor's most memorable role. Expect fiery disagreements, unexpected praise, and side-splitting commentary. Whether it's Tom Hanks surviving solo in Cast Away or Robert Pattinson's gritty performance in Good Time, this episode is a masterclass in movie nerdery—served with a heavy dose of comedy and chemistry that only this crew can deliver.
Filmmaker Christopher Jason Bell (Miss Me Yet, Attention Shoppers) joins us to discuss Last Action Hero, a meta action comedy featuring too many ideas, a healthy serving of great jokes, and a fascinating reckoning for its star Arnold Schwarzenegger as he was aging into the second act of his movie star career. We begin with a conversation about the action hero vehicle, its dominance in the 1980s, and its turn to self-reference and parody in the early 1990s. Then, we explore Last Action Hero's bizarre combination of action movie tropes and lighter cartoon comedy logic that makes its satirical targets more difficult to identify. After, we address the ways the film incidentally exonerates itself from some of the more ideologically thorny tendencies of police films by embracing fantasy and drawing attention to its artifice. Finally, we spend some time discussing Chris's latest brilliant and beautiful film Failed State, how its component parts all came together, and what it means to be a filmmaker in our moment of constant crises and social alienation.Follow Christopher Jason Bell on TwitterWatch Chris's films on Means.tv Watch the trailer for Failed StateGet access to all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish
Wonderful Morgan Gire returns to the pod and we talk the movies of Mr. Val Kilmer. Were you a fan? What films were your favorites? Have you seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang? Tune in for a freewheeling, fun episode (we absolutely bounced all over the place but had a great time ).
It's Christmastime, but don't get too excited for the merriment yet: college application stress looms over (nearly) everyone. Not Joey, of course, who's invited to a Yacht Club dinner for prospective students of Worthington University. She spends so much effort convincing Pacey to go that she completely forgets how much she clenches up any time she's near a cloth napkin or multi-fork table setting, and recedes into the background as Pacey charms the alumni rep. As for everyone else: Dawson watches Mr. Brooks's last movie, Turn Away, My Sweet and is blown away (my sweet) -- so much so, perhaps, that when he has to write his essay for his application to USC film school, he's only able to write around the prompt question of why he wants to be a filmmaker. Jack finishes all his applications and is concerned about the very vague answers Jen's giving about hers -- and about the silent treatment Grams is STILL giving her after the rave fiasco. Gretchen learns that the Leery Christmas parties she loved have a kid have been suspended in her absence the last few years due to...well, divorce; she convinces the Leerys to let her throw one at the house, which conveniently lets everyone use it to hash out their issues -- even Grams and Mr. Brooks! In this episode of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Shane and Andrew dive into the 1977 James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me, starring Roger Moore. They discuss their first impressions, the film's strong female lead Anya Amasova, and the forgettable villain. The conversation also covers the film's iconic music, fashion choices, and gadgets, while exploring themes of queerness and representation.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a fantastic neo-noir that is carried by outstanding lead performances from Robert Downey, Jr. (RDJ) and Val Kilmer. Written and directed by Shane Black, it is a film that thrives on its witty banter, sleek visuals, and intricate plotting. Ok, that latter bit can sometimes be a bit convoluted, but that doesn't detract from the repartee. Kilmer has never been better than he is here. And RDJ capitalized on his exceptional performance as Harry Lockhart to catapult back into the mainstream. Yes, he's that good in this. Sadly, this movie didn't fare nearly as well at the box office as its spiritual successor, The Nice Guys, nor did it ever get the sequel it so richly deserved. Now, sit back, choke down a Rowdy Peach IPA from Sweetwater Brewing, and avoid peeing on the corpse! The Thunderous Wizard, Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are investigating the untimely and mysterious death of Proto-Cop! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Sex. Murder. Mystery. Grab your drink and get ready for some killer dialogue, twisty mysteries, and a whole lot of Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer chemistry that just crackles. This week, we're diving into what makes this movie so damn good: the whip-smart script from Shane Black, the unexpected buddy-cop dynamic between Downey Jr.'s Harry Lockhart and Kilmer's "Gay Perry," and the film's perfect blend of hard-boiled crime and laugh-out-loud comedy. We'll be dissecting the intricate plot, the endlessly quotable lines, and, of course, Kilmer's effortlessly cool and funny performance. If you're a fan of clever crime flicks, dark humor, or just appreciate the brilliance of Kilmer in a role that truly showcases his range and comedic timing, then you won't want to miss this. The Island of Dr. Moreau has the ignoble distinction of being the only movie to appear on this podcast twice. But, to be fair, the first episode was in dire need of further conversation. Thus, we've gone back to the island with all manor of misfit mutants. As we suspected, the film remains just as bizarre as ever. Like the ill-fated experiments of the titular doctor, The Island of Dr. Moreau itself is a Frankenstein's monster. Hurricanes, clashing egos, and an emergency director swap (that's not even the half of it) all ensured that this would be just as odd offscreen as it was on. And believe us, all the on-set discord shows in the final product. Yet there is something unexplainably watchable about this movie. Val Kilmer is at his campiest, and Marlon Brando saves what would be a dull affair with his flair for the absurd. Watch it and wonder how it even exists at all. Now, sit back, mutate your mind with a BajaJack Salted Lime Lager from SanTan Brewing Co., and go on two legs! Val Kilmer was an actor's actor. The rare sort of movie star whose focus was always on creating the best performance possible. Even when not the leading man, he through himself into every role, always elevating what had been written on the page into something special. Over the course of an impressive 30 year career, Val was shaped by the Hollywood machine into a bonafied movie star. From lighter fair like Top Secret and Real Genius to performances in Tombstone, The Doors, Willow, Heat and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang... Val proved there was no genre he couldn't master. No character he couldn't make memorable and, perhaps most impressive, wholly his own. His contributions to the film industry are as vast as they are undeniable. Val Kilmer passed away from pneumonia on April 1, 2025 at the age of just 65. For this tribute episode, we discuss 12 of what we consider to be his most important films. ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen) • Coopster Gold (join) • Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile

This week is a (sort of?) somber episode, beloved listeners - we've recorded an homage to the life and career of Val Kilmer, an actor who had a big impact on all of the Sneople. From Top Gun to Batman Forever, Willow to Tombstone, and of course Heat to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the Sneople go through several films featuring Val Kilmer and the many many highlights in his work. Like any of our in memoriam episodes, it's tricky writing our normal jokey summaries without feeling odd about it, so it's time to be genuine for three seconds - he was a great actor who did some incredible work, and none of us would be who we are today without Kiss Kiss Bang Bang specifically. Thanks, Val. Unrelated, but still sincere - apologies for the delayed episode! We'll have another one out next week per our usual schedule.

When you heard the news earlier this month that Val Kilmer died, your mind likely jumped to an image of him from one of his movies. Iceman from Top Gun was no doubt the one that most people conjured. Or was it Doc Holliday from Tombstone? Or Jim Morrison from The Doors? Or Madmartigan from Willow? If you need evidence of Kilmer's lasting impact on the film world, that should be enough. Even the most casual of movie-watchers can easily replay a scene in their head from one of his many memorable roles (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang being a personal favorite … if you haven't seen it, it's well worth your four bucks to rent). On this episode of Cinebuds, Dori and Kpolly take a beautifully heartbreaking trip through Val Kilmer's filmography by sharing their personal connections to his work and delving into his illustrious career — with a slight bias you'd expect from kids of the '80 and '90s, as our hosts are.Was Kilmer the most unsung leading man of his generation? Does that sell him short from a career perspective considering his theater work and Grammy nomination? We start to answer those questions in this episode.

In this episode of In a World! Films What If Podcast, we're diving into the sharp, stylish, and criminally underrated Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It's a neo-noir that balances mystery, satire, and dark comedy with surprising emotional weight. Beneath the witty banter and Hollywood absurdity lies a story that's smarter and more impactful than it initially lets on.Robert Downey Jr. stumbles into acting (literally), Michelle Monaghan brings the heart and heat, and Val Kilmer absolutely steals the show as Gay Perry—a role that's as iconic as it is overdue for the recognition it deserves. This episode is dedicated to the late, great Val Kilmer—whose performance here proves he could outwit, outshoot, and out-sass just about anyone on screen. So grab your detective hat (and maybe a glass of whiskey), and let's unravel this twisted gem that blends bullets with belly laughs—and shows us what happens when Shane Black lets his noir flag fly.

Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast! Our little store recently celebrated two separate milestones! Not only does March mark the one year anniversary of our fun little podcast, but this just so happens to be the 50th episode of the show, which means I (Rob "Flack" O'Hara), Ashley Thomas, and The Retroist have officially recommended 200 films for your viewing enjoyment. U hope you returned them all on time. For this week's show I had planned to do something that coincided with our show's anniversary… and right as I was walking the store's aisles looking for movies to recommend I learned of the untimely passing of Val Kilmer, which convinced me to change course. Kilmer will be remembered as one of the great actors of our time. From Batman to Willow, Kilmer was woven into the 80s and 90s. The hardest part about this week's show was narrowing my selections down to only four. Top Gun (1986)Ride into the danger zone with this classic from the 1980s starring Tom Cruise as Maverick, Kelly McGillis as Charlie, and Val Kilmer as the one and only Ice Man. When I was a teen I didn't know anyone who hadn't seen this film and yet today it seems many younger film fans skipped it. Featuring an all-star cast and a soundtrack full of hits that will “take your breath away,” Top Gun is a classic that remains watchable and relevant today. Real Genius (1985)In Real Genius, a group of brilliant college students are brought together to work on a project that someone may or may not have nefarious plans for. Val Kilmer is Chris Knight, a loveable, quirky genius who takes a fifteen-year-old genius named Mitch under his wings. Will the geniuses have what it takes to complete their project — and if they do, will they also be able to stop it? Real Genius remains one of my favorite 80s comedies of all time. A guy's gotta have his standards.Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)In this old-school pulp detective story dragged into the 20th century, a thief (Robert Downey, Jr.) and a private detective (Kilmer) work together to solve a murder — and then more murders… and then try to avoid getting murdered. This is a fantastic film, dripping with style and unexpected twists and turns. Sit back, relax, and try not to lose the plot… or a finger.Tombstone (1993)No tribute to Val Kilmer would be complete without this film, featuring his iconic performance as Doc Holiday, Wyatt Earp's loyal friend. Also starring Kurt Russell, Sam Elliott, and several others, Kilmer's performance in Tombstone will never let you forget who's your Huckleberry.Rest in peace, Mr. Kilmer. Due to technical difficulties with the recording of Cattle Annie and Little Britches, I had to adjust and decided to put out an old episode of a podcast that my cousin and I use to do called My Celluloid Heart. This episode was called Private Dicks Pt. 1: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and as you will hear on it, I had technical difficulties then too. So it's a solo episode that I hope you enjoy. Come back next week for Cattle Annie and Little Britches (1981) with either me, or me and Frank Mandosa from Reels of Cinema.
Why are so many of our decisions based on what's best for Israel? How about what's best for the people of this country? America First, right? But before you start hating, we got something to say about that too!Show NotesOpening Segment (00:00:00 - 00:03:15)* Intro Theme: The hosts kick off with a provocative analogy comparing U.S. foreign policy to a man prioritizing his "side chick" over his family, hinting at Israel's influence. They note this could be labeled anti-Semitic but dive in regardless.* Podcast Introduction: The hosts introduce themselves as the "two kings of the Rube Empire," proudly embracing labels like "right-wing extremists," "supernaturalists," and "Christian bigots." They set the tone for an unfiltered, high-energy discussion.* Banter: Lighthearted joking about locking the doors and soliciting donations, showcasing their irreverent style.Val Kilmer Tribute (00:03:15 - 00:13:36)* Val Kilmer's Passing: The hosts mourn Val Kilmer's death, speculating on his faith and sharing favorite roles:* Philosopher King: Loves Doc Holliday in Tombstone ("I'm your Huckleberry").* Iron King: Picks Moses in The Prince of Egypt for its depth and music.* Dusty: Highlights Kilmer's comedic role in Real Genius and his versatility in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.* Film Discussion: They explore Kilmer's range (Heat, The Doors, Willow, Top Gun), praising his ability to disappear into characters. Tangents include Tom Cruise's Oscar snubs and Scientology.* Aging Actors: The conversation shifts to other aging icons (Clint Eastwood, Chuck Norris, Dick Van Dyke), marveling at their longevity.Political Speculation (00:13:36 - 00:27:10)* Biden's Absence: The hosts question Biden's whereabouts, joking about a Weekend at Bernie's scenario with Kamala Harris.* Democratic Party: They identify Bernie Sanders and AOC as the current faces of the Democrats, predicting AOC might run for president in 2028 due to her age eligibility.* Trump's Coalition: Discussion on how Trump maintains his MAGA base amidst actions like Yemen bombings, which contradict his "no forever wars" stance. They critique the "they touched our boats" justification.* Future of the Right: Concerns about keeping principled conservatives (like themselves) in the coalition, suggesting figures like J.D. Vance or Thomas Massie as potential successors, though Massie's independence might alienate MAGA loyalists.* Immigration: Strong support for deporting violent illegal immigrants (e.g., MS-13), rejecting libertarian "slippery slope" arguments. They frame it as a principled stance on law and order.Lies, Trust, and Truth (00:27:10 - 01:45:05)* World War II Revisionism: The hosts challenge the narrative of WWII, arguing the U.S. didn't "win" but rather exploited Germany's defeat for its own gain, eroding trust in historical accounts.* Climate Change Skepticism: They note the fading climate change rhetoric, tying it to anti-Elon Musk sentiment and pointing out inconsistencies (e.g., Obama's oceanfront mansion).* Government Distrust: A recurring theme: Boomers trusted the government blindly due to limited information access, while modern generations, armed with the internet, see through the lies (e.g., oil abundance, not scarcity).* The Bible as Truth: They passionately argue the Bible is the only reliable truth amidst pervasive lies, citing evidence like mitochondrial DNA (Adam and Eve), flood fossils, and Red Sea chariots. This drives their mission to "wake people up."Reformation and Faith (01:41:31 - 02:02:00)* Printing Press Parallel: The hosts compare the internet to Gutenberg's printing press, both exposing lies and driving people to Jesus by making truth accessible.* Catholic Critique: They challenge Catholic practices (praying to Mary, saints, purgatory) as unbiblical, urging Catholics and Orthodox believers to read the Bible themselves. They predict this leads to Protestantism.* Protestant Issues: Acknowledge flaws like dispensationalism (a "red herring" discouraging long-term investment) and seeker-sensitive churches, but emphasize sola scriptura.* Unity in Christ: Despite denominational differences, they affirm Jesus as the sole focus of faith, not traditions or institutions.Final Thoughts (01:53:26 - 02:02:11)* Dusty: Debunks the "Trump third term" rumor as Democratic fearmongering, citing his age and constitutional barriers. Ties it to the assassination attempt, calling it miraculous and suspicious.* Philosopher King: Laments the lack of reasonable discourse, advocating for truth paired with love and hate for sin, rooted in trust in Jesus over failing institutions.* Closing Prayer (Dusty): A heartfelt prayer thanking God for truth and the chance to glorify Him.* Outro: The hosts sign off, encouraging listeners to engage and spread the word, reaffirming their service to "the King of Kings, Christ Jesus."Key Themes* Skepticism of Authority: Distrust in government, media, and historical narratives.* Biblical Truth: The Bible as the ultimate anchor amidst lies.* Political Critique: Balancing support for Trump with principled objections to his actions.* Cultural Commentary: Reflections on faith, masculinity, and societal shifts.Notable Quotes* "The Bible is the only thing that's true. Wake up." (Iron King)* "If you read that Bible... magically, you're going to become a Protestant." (Iron King)* "There's only one person who should rule you, and that is the King of Kings." (Philosopher King)Next Episode: Tune in next week for more unfiltered takes from the Rube Empire! This is a public episode. What magic do Christmas movies use to make them so rewatchable? In this “backmatter” episode of Draft Zero, Stu, Chas, and Mel Killingsworth embark on a festive exploration of what makes holiday films so engaging and so re-watchable that they can become part of our rituals. To that end, we breakdown the charm of of Christmas films like KISS KISS BANG BANG, RIDERS OF JUSTICE, and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. We discuss what defines a holiday movie, the power of nostalgia, the importance of ensembles to a sense of family, and how voiceover, snappy dialogue and intricate plots can make something rewatchable. For each of us, we see these films as gateways to introspection and shared experiences during the holidays. And we are briefly joined by filmmaker (and friend of the podcast) Damien Cassar who talks us through the meaning of nostalgia and it's relationship with the “pain of homecoming”, and how Christmas/Holiday films provide comfort and a sense of belonging amid ever-changing societal dynamics. Merry Christmas! As always: SPOILERS ABOUND and all copyright material used under fair use for educational purposes. Thanks to Chris Walker for his excellent editing this episode. Happy Holidays! This week, Josh and Drusilla watch the Christmas-y RKO classic, The Curse of the Cat People from Val Lewton. From wiki: “The Curse of the Cat People is a 1944 American psychological supernatural thriller film[1][2][3] directed by Gunther von Fritsch and Robert Wise, produced by Val Lewton, and starring Simone Simon, Kent Smith, Jane Randolph, and Ann Carter. It tells a story about a young girl who befriends the ghost of her father's deceased first wife, a Serbian fashion designer who descended from a race of people who could transform into cats. The film, which marks Wise's first directing credit, is a sequel to Cat People (1942) and has many of the same central characters, but the plot is only tangentially related to its predecessor.
