Daily Anglican Prayer - Saturday Evening Prayer – 9th March 2025. Readings: Psalm 24; 26; Jeremiah 24; Hebrews 2.10-18. Led by Felicity Scott, an Anglican lay minister in Queensland, Australia. Which guest reader, Michelle Brooks. The full prayer transcript is available by going to this episode on the Podcast website. https://dailyprayeranglicanprayerbookforaustralia.podbean.com Welcome to Saturday Evening prayer from the Anglican ‘A prayer book for Australia'. We proclaim the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ: GOD in his infinite mercy, forgives all sins, and through our baptism in the name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, we are given a rebirth into new life, free from the burden of all sin. ALLELUIA With faithfulness we respond to the good news: We acknowledge Christ as our saviour and accept with gratitude, that we are forgiven for all wrong doings, past and present. To honour the gift of forgiveness, we release our burden of guilt and rise up to live in the glory of God forever more. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Blessed be God forever. Let us Pray. 1 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1.2 Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit: as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen. 2 The Opening Canticle, A Song of the Shepherd The Lord is my shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing. He shall make me lie down in green pastures: and lead me beside still waters. He shall refresh my soul: and guide me in right pathways for his name's sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me. You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me: you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full. Surely your goodness and loving-kindness shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalm 23 3 The Opening Prayer The day is now past and the night is at hand. Let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence may be kept. Father of lights, receive the prayer and praise we offer you as our evening sacrifice; make us a light for all the world, delivered by your goodness from all the works of darkness; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen. 4 The Psalms as appointed. A pause is observed after each. Psalm 5 At the end of the (last) pause there may follow Lord Christ, eternal Word and Light of the Father's glory: send your light and your truth that we may both know and proclaim your word of life, to the glory of God the Father; for you now live and reign, God for all eternity. Amen. 6 One or two Readings from the Bible as appointed. 1st Reading 2nd Reading The readings may be followed by a period of silence for reflection, a hymn or May your word live in us and bear much fruit to your glory. 7 The Canticle, the Easter Anthems Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us: so let us celebrate the feast, Not with the old leaven of corruption and wickedness: but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ once raised from the dead dies no more: death has no more dominion over him. In dying, he died to sin once for all: in living, he lives to God. See yourselves, therefore, as dead to sin: and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ has been raised from the dead: the first fruits of those who sleep. For since by one man came death: by another has come also the resurrection of the dead, For as in Adam all die: even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 8 The belief and principle is said I believe in God, creator of heaven and earth, whose love and merciful forgiveness endures everlasting. I believe in Christ the saviour, whose example of love and compassion, taught us a restored way to live, in collaborative unity with all people. I believe in the Holy Spirit, whose divine guidance brings us together to be one with the Holy Trinity. Amen. 9 The Prayers Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. God have mercy. 9 The Lord's Prayer and the Collect of the Day Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. Join us and the writer of Hebrews in looking for Christ in the text of Psalm 40. Readings: Psalm 40:1-8 and Hebrews 10:1-10.
How do we keep from seeing too much of ourselves in the Psalms? The safeguard is to look at what Jesus and the apostles said about the Psalms. Readings: Psalm 8, Hebrews 2:5-9.
We dive into the intriguing question of where Jesus is in the biblical story so far. While Jesus may not be explicitly named, we explore how he is described and the context surrounding his coming. Through promises, such as defeating evil, blessing nations, and ruling in an everlasting kingdom, the Bible builds anticipation for the arrival of the promised Seed. We uncover the significance of various pictures in the story, such as the Passover Lamb, the Tabernacle, and the Temple which provide further understanding of the Seed's purpose. Finally, we discover the role of faith in righteousness and the anticipation for Jesus as the solution to humanity's problems.Readings: Psalm 1:1-6, Psalm 2:1-12, Psalm 145:1-21Support the showRead along with us in the Bible Brief App!Support the show: Tap here to become a monthly supporter!Review the show: Tap here!Want to go deeper?...Download the Bible Brief App!iPhone: App Store LinkAndroid: Play Store LinkWebsite: biblebrief.orgInstagram: @biblelitTwitter: @bible_litFacebook: @biblelitEmail the Show: biblebrief@biblelit.orgThis episode primarily uses the ESV Bible translation, but may also use CSB, NASB, and NKJV.Search Tags: bible, beginner, bible verse, god, verse of the day, prayer, jesus, bible study, scripture, learn, bible introduction, introduction, intro to the bible, introduction to the bible, beginner bible, bible overview, how to read the bible, what is the bible about, bible story, bible stories, what is the bible, ...
In this episode, we review the foundational people and pivotal events of the Bible story so far. We begin with Adam and Eve, their disobedience in the Garden of Eden, and the consequences of their actions. We then explore the stories of Cain and Abel, Noah and the great flood, and the calling of Abram. The promises made to Abraham, his son Isaac, and grandson Jacob set the stage for the nation of Israel. We delve into the story of Joseph, his rise to power in Egypt, and the enslavement of the Israelites. Later, God commissions Moses, reveals His name, delivers Israel, and gives the Law at Mount Sinai. Joshua conquers much of the Land, and soon the time of the judges begins. Join us as we review these foundational narratives and prepare for the next era of the Bible story.Readings: Psalm 105:1-45Support the showRead along with us in the Bible Brief App!Support the show: Tap here to become a monthly supporter!Review the show: Tap here!Want to go deeper?...Download the Bible Brief App!iPhone: App Store LinkAndroid: Play Store LinkWebsite: biblebrief.orgInstagram: @biblelitTwitter: @bible_litFacebook: @biblelitEmail the Show: biblebrief@biblelit.orgThis episode primarily uses the ESV Bible translation, but may also use CSB, NASB, and NKJV.Search Tags: bible, beginner, bible verse, god, verse of the day, prayer, jesus, bible study, scripture, learn, bible introduction, introduction, intro to the bible, introduction to the bible, beginner bible, bible overview, how to read the bible, what is the bible about, bible story, bible stories, what is the bible, ...

Greek has two common words for “life.” Day-to-day, living organisms all exhibit “bios” (where we get the words “biology” and “biography”). But humans especially were made to experience something more fulfilling–a rich and unending kind of life that Jesus calls “Zoē” (later adapted as a common girl's name). The “life” that Jesus offers us is the latter kind, and good it is for us to find it in his own self-giving love! Readings: Psalm 34:9-14; Ephesians 5:15-20; John 6:51-58

The speech of Jesus in John 6 contains many shocking statements, including the perplexing promise and warning: "No one can come to me unless the Father first draws him" (6:44). No one likes to be told they can't, and yet that's Jesus' response to the grumbling crowd. However as we move past what appears at first to be insulting we find in his words the love, grace and sheer beauty of God our Saviour. Readings: Psalm 130; Ephesians 4:25–5:2; John 6:35, 41–51
The rejection of Jesus at Nazareth is not inherently a Jewish rejection of the Messiah's teachings–his followers would go on to other Jewish towns that received that same message. The call of discipleship is holistic and thus it demands a humble approach to the one in whose pattern a disciple would be molded. Where that humility (otherwise seen in action as faith) was absent in Nazareth, it abounded elsewhere in the Galilee. Readings: Psalm 48; Mark 6:1-13
Like clouds and waves at sea, doubts often leave us disoriented, unsure of where to go or whether we even began going the right way. Rather than avoid them with shame, we can embrace them as defining moments: opportunities to rid ourselves of false assurances and better engage reality as it is. As Christians, we can always look to the living example of Jesus in those moments, and entrust our future selves with Him–like wayward sailors who set a course and trust that their boat will arrive back on shore. Readings: Psalm 73, Ephesians 1:3-14, Mark 6:14-29

“Magdalene thought Jesus was the gardener … because Jesus was the gardener. Think about it. Why wouldn't Jesus be the gardener? Isn't it natural that the Jesus who was born as an Illegal migrant and quickly became a refugee should first appear as a day laborer? But even Magdalene, who had been erased and dismissed and treated as a “just another woman” even just minutes before by the male disciples, fell into the trap of only looking for Jesus in a comfortable, familiar form. That's how easy it is for all of us.” Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 11:15 a.m. on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. “I truly believe … God dreams for us to be a community that is unflinching in our quest for justice. A community that refuses to remain silent in the midst of horrendous evil, knowing that “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil… Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” A community that is as determined as ever not “to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice,” but “to drive a spoke into the wheel itself.” A community that is as determined as ever to speak the truth to the powers that are oppressing and killing the people of God here and around the world in the same way that Gandhi spoke that truth to Hitler. And … a community that always begins those entreaties with the words “Dear friend.”” Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at All Saints Church, Pasadena.
