La Porta | Renungan Harian Katolik - Daily Meditation according to Catholic Church liturgy
Kemuliaan kepadaBapa ... Dalam nama Bapa ...
Just two weeks ago the world learned of an asteroid that had an almost 3 percent chance of striking earth in less than a decade. Astronomers kept looking, and a team including Olivier Hainaut at ESO's Very Large Telescope at Palanar, in Chile, have managed to narrow down the uncertainty such that we now know it will definitely not hit the earth. The secret of making such observations after most telescopes could no longer see it was down to the exceptionally dark skies there. But these may be under threat. A plan has been made to build a large power plant, including sustainable hydrogen production around 11km away from the otherwise isolated site, and astronomers around the world are rallying to call for the plant to be built further away so that its construction will not spoil the otherwise unique observation conditions. One of the signatories of a petition to that effect is Julia Siedel, also of ESO, who just last week published the first 3D atmospheric analysis of an exoplanet's climate. As she explains, future similar observations using the forthcoming, co-sited Extremely Large Telescope could be thwarted before the telescope is even finished.Back on earth, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Current (AMOC) continues to bring warmer air and nutrients north towards the Arctic, and colder, denser water south in the global ocean overturn. But are reports of its collapse under climate change justified? A new paper this week suggests that for the next century at least it is stable though it might slow down. Jonathan Baker of the UK Met office explains how the winds in the south mean the cycle will keep turning, though it may slow down.Talking of the Arctic, Yoel Fink of MIT has dressed a couple of royal marines in wearable computer fibres for their current icy patrol in the north of Canada. Far from going commando, their underwear is measuring temperature and calorific burn to help them avoid frostbite and the dangers of the extreme environment. Yoel's paper this week describes the new device and the principle that in the future much of all of our healthcare will be provided by these sorts of wearable, stretchy, computing textiles monitoring our activities.Presenter: Roland Pease Producer: Alex Mansfield Production Coordinator: Jana Bennett-Holesworth and Josie Hardy(Image: Celestial conjunction at Paranal. In today's episode of Let's Talk Business, host Meny Hoffman sits down with Yoel Judowitz to explore the fascinating journey from illustration to digital marketing success. Starting his career as a children's book illustrator, Yoel's story is one of adaptation and growth, showcasing how creative skills can evolve to meet changing market demands. What makes this conversation particularly compelling is Yoel's unique perspective on transitioning from traditional artistic work to the dynamic world of digital marketing. As the founder of Story Tribe Media, he shares how his background in storytelling and visual arts became invaluable assets in the modern marketing landscape, especially within the Jewish community. The discussion delves deep into the challenges of scaling a creative business, with Yoel candidly sharing his experiences in building and managing a studio team. He offers valuable insights into maintaining creative quality while delegating work, particularly when dealing with cultural nuances specific to the Jewish market. A significant portion of the conversation focuses on the evolution of digital marketing, especially the growing importance of platforms like WhatsApp status in the firm and Jewish communities. Both Hoffman and Judowitz explore how businesses can effectively navigate these new channels while staying true to their brand identity. Whether you're a creative professional looking to expand your horizons, a business owner navigating the digital landscape, or simply interested in the intersection of creativity and business, this episode offers practical insights and actionable strategies for success in today's evolving market. Learn to delegate tasks and build a team that can sustain your business independently, as illustrated by Yoel's journey from YJ Studios to managing a team for illustration. Consider building a personal brand alongside your company brand to create a more personalized connection. However, ensure alignment with company values to avoid any discrepancies. Utilize the skills you are naturally good at, as a way to build your career initially, like Yoel did with illustration for children's books. Focus on platforms that provide the most benefit for your business, whether it's LinkedIn, Instagram, or WhatsApp status, similar to Yoel's observations about these mediums.

In this insightful episode, we welcome Rabbi Yaakov Beasley to discuss his book "Joel, Obadiah, and Micah: Facing the Storm," part of the acclaimed Maggid Studies in Tanakh series. Rabbi Beasley begins by sharing his background and what inspired him to write this work. He also introduces the Gush Tanakh Method for listeners unfamiliar with it, before directly addressing JJ Kimche's criticisms from our previous interview. We then dive into the etymology and role of a נביא (prophet) and explore how we should understand prophecies that seem to have gone unfulfilled. Rabbi Beasley identifies three key reasons why modern readers often struggle to connect with the writings of the prophets, while also providing a brief history of Yisrael and Yehudah, essential for understanding the prophets' messages. Next, we turn to the specific prophets discussed in his book. Rabbi Beasley elaborates on why Yoel is particularly challenging to interpret, offering insights into the various opinions about when and where he prophesied. We also examine Ovadiah's sharp condemnation of Edom, exploring the debates about the date, authorship, and audience of his prophecies. Finally, we delve into the life and message of the prophet Micah, discussing what sets him apart from other prophets and how his unique style enhances our understanding of his book. To close, Rabbi Beasley gives us a preview of his upcoming work on the prophets Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah. This is a must-listen for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of the biblical prophets and their relevance today. --- • Bio: Rabbi Yaakov Beasley is the Tanakh Coordinator at Yeshivat Lev haTorah and completed a doctorate on the book of Micah at Bar Ilan University. Rav Yaakov has been teaching and writing about Tanakh for over twenty years. A popular lecturer around Jerusalem and Israel, including such yeshivot as Matan, Darchei Noam, Midreshet Rachel, and others, he co-edited Yeshivat Har Etzion's groundbreaking series "Torah MiEtzion" on the application of new literary methodologies to the study of parashat ha-shavua. Greek has two common words for “life.” Day-to-day, living organisms all exhibit “bios” (where we get the words “biology” and “biography”). But humans especially were made to experience something more fulfilling–a rich and unending kind of life that Jesus calls “Zoē” (later adapted as a common girl's name). The “life” that Jesus offers us is the latter kind, and good it is for us to find it in his own self-giving love! Readings: Psalm 34:9-14; Ephesians 5:15-20; John 6:51-58
The speech of Jesus in John 6 contains many shocking statements, including the perplexing promise and warning: "No one can come to me unless the Father first draws him" (6:44). No one likes to be told they can't, and yet that's Jesus' response to the grumbling crowd. However as we move past what appears at first to be insulting we find in his words the love, grace and sheer beauty of God our Saviour. Readings: Psalm 130; Ephesians 4:25–5:2; John 6:35, 41–51
"Do you want to get well?"This weekend Pastor John and special guest Yoel Berkowitz shared a message on the significance of Jesus' miracles with the history of where and how these miracles took place. Mickey joins Yoel for the first new episode in nearly a year. We talk what's been up with the show, plans for the future, and what it feels like to briefly be (almost) internet-famous. In the second half of the show, we talk about expertise and prediction. When social scientists make predictions about the future, should we listen? How much should failures of prediction make us distrust expert advice more generally, and if so, how skeptical should we be?
Like clouds and waves at sea, doubts often leave us disoriented, unsure of where to go or whether we even began going the right way. Rather than avoid them with shame, we can embrace them as defining moments: opportunities to rid ourselves of false assurances and better engage reality as it is. As Christians, we can always look to the living example of Jesus in those moments, and entrust our future selves with Him–like wayward sailors who set a course and trust that their boat will arrive back on shore. Readings: Psalm 73, Ephesians 1:3-14, Mark 6:14-29

When thinking and speaking about the Kingdom of Heaven, we often imagine it as unimaginable–totally alien to this broken world. But Jesus' many parables help us to consider it in familiar terms. And something about it–a Kingdom we have yet to experience in its fullness–begins to feel like home. Readings: Ezekiel 31:1–14; Psalm 92; 2 Corinthians 5:1–10; Mark 4:26–34

In this episode of "American Potential," Host Jeff Crank welcomes Yoel Diaz Cuni and Mari Daniela Diaz, a couple sharing Yoel's journey from Cuba to the United States. Yoel's emotional first experiences in America, from marveling at the abundance in grocery stores to opening his first American paycheck, provide a poignant perspective on the freedoms and opportunities often taken for granted. Mari shares her fascination with remote places, including plans to visit the Pitcairn Islands, contrasting Yoel's upbringing in a Cuban village without electricity, underscoring the stark contrasts between life in Cuba and the U.S. The couple discusses the challenges of daily life in Cuba, from censorship and scarcity to the government's strict control over basic necessities like food and electricity. Yoel's reaction to his first American steak at Texas Roadhouse, a simple pleasure denied in his homeland due to stringent regulations, illustrates the profound appreciation immigrants have for the liberties afforded in the United States. Through Yoel and Mari's stories, this episode explores the transformative power of freedom and opportunity. It serves as a reminder of the hardships faced by those living under oppressive regimes and the enduring hope and resilience of those who seek a better life in America. Their journey underscores the importance of cherishing and defending the liberties that define the American dream.
