Shalom, y'all, this week we look at how, in the Scripture, we see many prophetic implications. We will explore the life of Yosef (Joseph) as a foreshadowing of Yeshua. We will see a picture of a suffering servant and a ruler of all the earth. While we can talk about many areas in Yosef's life spiritually and metaphorically, let us not forget that he was also a real person with real experiences. All of this together should increase our faith and encourage us to believe that one person makes a difference in the lives of others and the Kingdom of YHWH. There has been a dramatic rise in the number of foreign-born Israelis, mostly Ukrainians and Russians, leaving the country. According data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, in the first nine months of 2023, 35,000 non-native-born Israelis left the country while only 7,000 returned, much higher percentage than native-born Israelis. Prof. Dan Ben David, president of The Shoresh Institution for Social Economic Research and economist at Tel Aviv University, said it wasn't easy living here. Ben-David told reporter Arieh O'Sullivan that the numbers of those leaving, coupled with the judicial reforms plans and later the war were a wake-up call for the nation to get its act together. This is rebroadcasting of an episode with Juditta Ben-David.This is what it's about--passion, heart and helping others. And today, my guest exudes all of those elements. Today, I'm speaking with Juditta Ben-David, SEP M.A., founder of The Mindfulness in Arabic project (MiA).MiA has built a website that offers an eight-week Mindfulness course in Arabic, designed for refugees and people in transition. Any person with internet access may enter the website, free of charge, anywhere around the world. The course provides practical tools and exercises tailored specifically to support a shaken population that suffered traumas of fear, death and extreme violence. Juditta's website also provides tools for therapists, social workers, welfare workers, and volunteers who are currently working with refugee populations, so that they may use mindfulness-based tools for their own needs in coping with work stress and related DP camp difficult experiences, as well as passing them on to their clients.MiA developed out of the work of our founder, Juditta Ben-David, SEP M.A, in refugee camps in Turkey. Working there with refugees and their supporters/counselors and social-workers the request for additional tools led to a crowdfunding campaign raising one-half of the funds needed to launch our 8-week course. MiA is thankful to be supported by leading Mindfulness instructors like Jon Kabat Zinn, Jack Kornfield, Tara Brach, Christopher Titmuss and Patricia Genoud-Feldman as well as Mindfulness providers like Headspace and Mindful Magazine.

Greek has two common words for “life.” Day-to-day, living organisms all exhibit “bios” (where we get the words “biology” and “biography”). But humans especially were made to experience something more fulfilling–a rich and unending kind of life that Jesus calls “Zoē” (later adapted as a common girl's name). The “life” that Jesus offers us is the latter kind, and good it is for us to find it in his own self-giving love! Readings: Psalm 34:9-14; Ephesians 5:15-20; John 6:51-58
The speech of Jesus in John 6 contains many shocking statements, including the perplexing promise and warning: "No one can come to me unless the Father first draws him" (6:44). No one likes to be told they can't, and yet that's Jesus' response to the grumbling crowd. However as we move past what appears at first to be insulting we find in his words the love, grace and sheer beauty of God our Saviour. Readings: Psalm 130; Ephesians 4:25–5:2; John 6:35, 41–51
Like clouds and waves at sea, doubts often leave us disoriented, unsure of where to go or whether we even began going the right way. Rather than avoid them with shame, we can embrace them as defining moments: opportunities to rid ourselves of false assurances and better engage reality as it is. As Christians, we can always look to the living example of Jesus in those moments, and entrust our future selves with Him–like wayward sailors who set a course and trust that their boat will arrive back on shore. Readings: Psalm 73, Ephesians 1:3-14, Mark 6:14-29
When thinking and speaking about the Kingdom of Heaven, we often imagine it as unimaginable–totally alien to this broken world. But Jesus' many parables help us to consider it in familiar terms. And something about it–a Kingdom we have yet to experience in its fullness–begins to feel like home. Readings: Ezekiel 31:1–14; Psalm 92; 2 Corinthians 5:1–10; Mark 4:26–34
The ups and downs of US arms deliveries to Israel is not new. It's been going on for over 50 years as the US became Israel's main weapons supplier. The latest conflagration involves, as far as we know, shipments of 2,000 pound and 500 pound bombs with JDAM kits (joint Direct Attack Munitions) that provide dumb bombs with precision guidance. To give us some insight into this we turned to Lenny Ben David, director of American Institute at the Jerusalem Center for Foreign Affairs, and former deputy Israeli ambassador to Washington. Ben David also spent 25 years working with AIPAC. (photo: Ofer Zidon/flash90)See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Amidst some of the highest praise and evident joy in all of his writings, Paul in Romans chapter 8 guides us through Gospel resources in the face of suffering. He posits that our suffering is felt alongside Creation, and that the Holy Spirit Himself knows this suffering well and communicates it on our behalf to the Father. Dana Ben David is Co-Founder and Creative Director of Healthybud, a brand reinventing the pet wellness category focusing on functional treats, meal-toppers and healthy and nutritional food for dogs. The Montreal-based company is leveraging superfoods that are usually more familiar to humans than dogs, such as ashwagandha, goji berries, or reishi medicinal mushrooms. Before becoming an entrepreneur, she studied architecture, audio production, and voice acting, and as a trained vocalist and pianist, Dana also ventured into the music industry. In a tail-wagging twist on pet adoption, Healthybud unleashed an irresistible offer this last fall: a year's supply of free dog treats to anyone adopting a senior dog. This is: Learning-theoretic agenda reading list, published by Vanessa Kosoy on November 9, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. Recently, I'm receiving more and more requests for a self-study reading list for people interested in the learning-theoretic agenda. I created a standard list for that, but before now I limited myself to sending it to individual people in private, out of some sense of perfectionism: many of the entries on the list might not be the best sources for the topics and I haven't read all of them cover to cover myself. But, at this point it seems like it's better to publish a flawed list than wait for perfection that will never come. This is a book about love, about how to become a more loving human being. It has been inspired by the writings of the contemporary mystic, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook (1865-1935). Author Aryeh Ben David says, "Though this may not be what we learned in school or synagogue, becoming a more loving human being is really what Judaism is all about. And even more than becoming more loving human beings in our personal relationships—don't we sense that the larger world today is in desperate need of more love? The brokenness and anger present in Jewish life seems irreparable. Jews from different religious denominations and ideological views cannot sit together, much less respect each other's positions and love each other. Our political arena has become toxic and awash with animosity."

As an Orthodox Jew, Yoel Ben David was challenged to study the Old Testament in addition to the Talmud — this led to questions and more questions. By the time he got to Isaiah 53, all bets were off. It didn't take long for him to meet Jesus. Today, Yoel serves as the training director for Jews for Jesus in Israel. On today's episode of the Great Stories Podcast, you'll hear how prayer, patience, and God's Word can change the course of someone's life. Recorded in 2015 shortly after terrorists killed 130 people and wounded 494 in Paris, Charles Morris also speaks to Yoel about how Christians and Jews respond to extremist groups like ISIS.

And then we started researching and were blown away. The lovable Disney-like Nintendo that we know today is a 130 year-old a playing card company (i.e. gambling), forged in the shadowy world of the Yakuza and shaped by a four-generation cycle of bitter family betrayal. Ben Thompson joins Acquired to discuss the business of Stratechery itself and celebrate 10 years (!) of the internet's best strategy analysis destination. Even beyond Stratechery's enormous impact itself on business and tech over the years, Ben's work inspired a whole generation of business content creators — this show very much included — and it was super special for us to give the Acquired treatment to one of our own heroes. We cover the full history of Ben pioneering the subscription internet media business model (indeed SubStack's seed round pitch was “Stratechery-in-a-box”), and how + why he's evolved the business since and is now doubling down both on podcasting and a broader vision of the Stratechery Plus bundle… including for the first time content not made by Ben himself! The FTX fraud has dominated headlines now for weeks, during which we've debated if and how Acquired could uniquely add to the conversation. Then we realized there was an angle so perfect that we had to drop everything and enter Acquired research overdrive: Enron. Travel back with us to the granddaddy fraud of them all, 2001's then-largest bankruptcy in US history and the impetus for the famous Sarbanes-Oxley Act. So much of Enron's history parallels FTX that the uncanniness is almost unbelievable — right down to the same CEO running the two bankruptcies. Sit back and enjoy this crazy tale of villainy, greed, and the nature of humans and money. Maybe just don't take notes on this one… If you want more Acquired, you can follow our public LP Show feed here in the podcast player of your choice (including Spotify!). Qualcomm, or “Quality Communications” — despite being one of the largest technology companies in the world, few people know the absolutely amazing technological and business history behind it. Seriously, this story is on par with Nvidia, TSMC and all the great semiconductor giants. Without this single fabless company based in San Diego, there's almost no chance you'd be consuming this episode on whatever device you're currently listening on — a fact that enables them to earn an incredible estimated $20 for every new phone sold in the world. Last year reports emerged that the Orthodox Jewish community in Israel anointed Rabbi Yehuda Ben David as the Messiah. Christians have labeled him as the Antichrist. So, according to Bible prophecy, is Yehuda Ben David the Messiah, the Antichrist, or neither?
We sit down with all five current Benchmark GPs for one of their legendary weekly dinners, during which we ask all of the unresolved burning questions from Part 1. How do THEY think about Benchmark v3? What are their day-to-day emotions trying to keep the equal partnership “bending toward greatness? Why is there no growth fund? What does it take to become the next Benchmark GP? Why is there a secret Principal program? We cover all these and much, much more. We also recorded the whole thing on video — which we highly recommend watching even if you normally only listen to the audio feed! Benchmark Capital. We tell the tale of the legendary equal partnership that accomplished something no other venture firm can claim: twice it has produced the highest returning fund of its cycle, each time with a 100% different GP lineup. If ever there were a playbook for successful generational transfer of a generational-defining venture firm, this is it. We spend 3.5+ hours digging into how the dotcom “eBay eBoys” transformed into the rockstar Fab Four of the Uber, Instagram and Snap mobile gold rush (spoiler: not by a straight line!), and what the future holds for Benchmark's next GP generation. If you're a student of the venture game from any angle — founder, GP, LP, etc — this is a story you need to tune in for! So, how DID an online book retailer end up building the infrastructure layer that powers the entire internet? (Or at least 39% of it, per latest market share data.) While many myths, legends, and some downright falsehoods exist, the real answer to that question deserves a full Acquired episode of its very own. So here it is: the story of Amazon Web Services. Who's got the truth? Tune in and find out. :) If you want more Acquired, you can follow our newly public LP Show feed here in the podcast player of your choice (including Spotify!). Amazon. No company has impacted the internet — and all of modern life — more than this one. We've waited seven years to do this episode, and are so, so excited to finally dive into every nook and cranny of this legendary company. And of course because we're Acquired and this is Amazon, we couldn't contain it all to just one episode… even a 4+ hour one! So today we focus on Amazon.com the retail business, and we'll have another full episode on AWS coming soon. And because all great series are trilogies, to fully understand Amazon we highly recommend starting first with our previous episode on Walmart, which truly is the giant's shoulder that Jeff Bezos stood upon. We kick off Season 11 with the incredible story of the retail “granddaddy of them all” Walmart, and its founder Sam Walton. Once you study Walmart, you realize just how deep its heritage runs through Amazon and so many iconic modern companies we cover on Acquired. This episode was an absolute blast, and we even uncovered a new addendum to the hallowed “focus on what makes your beer taste better” playbook theme!
