Denise Thomas has been in the fitness industry for over 20-years, coaching in a multitude of sporting arenas and disciplines. She began her fitness journey as an avid soccer player, starting as an excited 6-year-old, earning a scholarship to the United States, and continuing on to representing the Boston Renegades, while becoming a member of the Irish National Team. During that time, Denise worked in various health clubs, coached soccer teams, ran a marathon, and found herself in a job teaching sports performance mechanics to high school, collegiate, and professional athletes in NYC's 'concrete jungle'. It was in NYC where she found CrossFit, competed in the sport, and became a member of the CFHQ Seminar Staff. Denise has worked for CrossFit since 2010, traveling around the world as a flowmaster on the Level 1, Level 2 and Coach Development staff. Currently, Denise is the Head Coach at Reebok CrossFit One, located at the World Reebok Headquarters in Boston, MA, and holds a Master's Degree in Exercise Physiology. She has also been a judge for the CrossFit Games for 8 years. You may recognize both voices on today’s show, as M.D.V (Matt DellaValle) is a seasoned guest and co-host of the Business of Fitness Podcast. MDV is the Chief FitnessOfficer at NCFIT, managing all fitness, coaching, and programming operations worldwide for the company. Over the past decade, MDV's journey has taken him a few different directions—coaching at some of the best gyms in the biz (CFNE, Reebok CrossFit ONE, CrossFit ONE Nation & NCFIT), leading seminars as part of CrossFit HQ Staff, and managing fitness partnerships for Reebok INTL. Before all this fitness stuff, MDV earned his law degree from William & Mary Law. He is passionate about coaching, fitness, and American traditional tattoos. In business, fitness, and life we have the tendency to want to over-complicate things and often end up biting off more than we can chew. Today, Jason and MDV, tackle this concept of the “Novice Curse” (thank you, Greg Glassman, for coining the term), and provide actionable steps athletes, coaches, and business owners can use to capitalize on virtuosity. Minute Breakdown: 0-5–The “Novice Curse” and how both athletes and coaches struggle with it. 5-10–Simplifying cues and better movement. 10-15–How this relates to business and how to build on fundamentals effectively. Conor Murphy was born and raised in Washington State, where he spent 10 years in Spokane, before moving to Gig Harbor. After graduating from Gig Harbor High School he enlisted in the Navy to follow his dream of becoming a Navy SEAL. The recurrence of an injury suffered in training however, would lead to his medical disqualification. After using CrossFit as a means to stay fit, Conor took the plunge and signed up for his Level 1 certificate course. He later moved to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands and opened Reebok CrossFit St. Thomas, with owners Chris and Jenn Irwin. After two consecutive podium finishes at the CrossFit Regionals, he signed a contract to become a sponsored athlete for Reebok. This in turn allowed him the opportunity to coach at Reebok CrossFit One at the Reebok World HQ. Not only is he employed by Reebok as a coach, but also works for CrossFit as a Head Trainer on the CrossFit L1 Seminar Staff. (The same seminar that, he says, was the impetus in getting his life back on track). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jason-ackerman/support
