Kroeten leads the way in rethinking and delivering player development always championing kids and possibilities based on his experienced, dedicated, and innovative soccer career. Joy of the People's mission statement provides a clear idea of what they're attempting to provide:   To support the idea of play as an important part of a child's development, to build small soccer spaces for kids to play, to serve disadvantaged youth, and to build community spirit.   Here are some highlights from the Podcast: What happened when free play was introduced into practice? How does the now defunct idea of “10,000 hours” play into free play and increasing performance? An amazing story of a soccer club famed for youth player development, with numerous expensive player transfers, yet they sign their players after the age of 16  The younger teams get beat in competition, but how does it work out when they get older? There is a time for structure, when is that time? What is going on with the athlete that did not grow up in the academy setting but blows away those who grew up in the deliberate practice environment? How can you add free play into your performance development practice plan? What are “kid micro-clubs”?     Connect with Ted Kroeten Website:  www.joyofthepeople.org Email: Ted@joyofthepeople.org Twitter: @JOYofthePEOPLE LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ted-kroeten-3114a27/   Resources Mentioned  Article on Dynamo Zagreb Academy Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World, by David Epstein [book] The debate between Epstein and Gladwell [video] Explorations in Language Acquisition and Use, by Stephen Krashen [book] How to Become a Transformational Coach with Jean Cote, World-Renowned Expert in Youth Sports and Coach Development [podcast]   OUR NEW BOOK IS AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER! He also acknowledges the need for a balance between prescription and allowing coaches to figure things out for themselves.Support the Show.https://talkingperformancepod.com/

Today, we are learning from Amy Armstrong. Amy is a licensed social worker who coaches leaders in business, education, and at home to master boundaries so they can break free from the anxiety of conflict. Clients learn to negotiate productively and create positive change -- no more feeling resentful of challenging situations or controlled by difficult people. Amy founded The Center for Family Resolution, a trusted source for innovative parenting and co-parenting interventions for domestic courts in Ohio and beyond. She is considered a pioneer in the field of conflict resolution at the intersection of family law. Her work also extends into New York City public schools and into corporate arenas. Additionally, Amy is the Director of Education with The Center for Coach Development, an authorized training program of the International Coaching Federation (ICF). This highly interactive program is for professionals who want to uplevel their communication skills or gain global recognition as a professional coach. Let's get started... In this conversation with Amy Armstrong, I learned: 00:00 Intro 02:20 Speaking with people about their experience with conflict, so we don't get so frustrated to live out our values. 04:50 Everyone believes that they are fighting for their values. 06:10 Help people to articulate their values that are at risk. 07:55 No one cares what you know until they know that you care. 08:50 We resist learning, in an atmosphere where we don't get a sense that the other person is interested in learning. 12:25 If we can create some type of human-to-human connection we are open to learning. 14:15 How do you stay in the heart space while having a money conversation? 14:30 When we go from our heart to our head we lose the connection. 16:50 Make eye contact with your heart saying, "I see you". 22:45 Taking responsibility for our own emotions. 25:25 How do we take ultimate responsibility for what we think, feel and do. 26:15 Any activist let's ask the question, how can I be in my heart? How can I speak from the heart? 30:00 Compassion for yourself is always the answer. 30:50 When fear is bathed in compassion, fear relaxes. 31:30 Some great practices and habits to open your heart. 36:15 Daily practices to remember that we have complete control over how we think, how we feel, and what we do. 37:45 In conflict we want to maximize our influence, maximize our power, by claiming responsibility. 39:00 We have control of keeping our hearts open, even in high conflict. 44:55 How activists could use compassion to speak from the heart, instead of from anger. 45:15 Focus on what we do want, instead of what we don't want. 46:55 Compassion is 'passion' with someone ('com'). 47:30 We don't change the message, we change the impact and the influence of our message. 49:50 Learning habits of compassion. In this podcast episode, Dr. Natalie Lancer hosts a discussion on the role of coach development, self-awareness and the concept of self in coaching. Dr. Julia Carden presents her research on self-awareness, distinguishing it from self-knowledge and self-consciousness. Heather Frost explores the concept of self, drawing on her doctoral research looking at 25 belief systems, highlighting its complexity and the practical impact of understanding a client's concept of self. Dr Elizabeth Crosse details the three developmental strategies that emerged through her doctoral research: the craft, the being and the art of coaching. We examine: •     Why is self-awareness important for coaches? •     What is the difference between self-awareness and the concept of self? •     How are self-awareness, self-knowledge, and self-consciousness linked? •     What are the challenges involved in demonstrating competency vs capacity development? •     How can we utilise the coach's and coachee's self-awareness in coaching practice? •     What do clients' beliefs about self mean for how coaches tailor their coaching? •     How can the three underpinnings of concept of self: stability vs instability, thoughts of self as a unique expression of me vs the self as an illusion, and unity versus multiplicity, be used to generate a concept of self scale? •     How does understanding the concept of self increase the coach's self awareness of beliefs and bias? And how can this benefit coaching outcomes? •     What is the difference between Continuous Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD)? •     Why is it more helpful to think of coach development as a learning journey than a linear progression? •     How do we know what coaching development opportunities to invest in? •     What are some practical ways to develop self-awareness? Self-awareness enables coaches to forge deeper connections with clients and furthermore, it seems we can only take clients as far as we have gone ourselves. We discussed how a focus on preparing the self rather than content, allows coaches to trust their abilities and concentrate on other aspects of their practice. As we wrapped up the episode, the guests shared how engaging and reflecting in formal and informal professional and personal experiences have influenced their development. Our guests today are: Dr Julia Carden is an accredited Master Practitioner Coach with the EMCC, a Professional Certified Coach with the ICF, an accredited coaching supervisor and is a Visiting Tutor at Henley Business School.  Julia was an officer in the Royal Navy, and then specialised in assessment and development centre work, and Learning and Development.  She fundamentally believes that as coaches we must first, and continue to do, the work on self – because who we are is how we coach.  This approach is underpinned by her PhD research which explored the role of self-awareness in the development of the coach. She is a NLP Master Practitioner, an accredited Time to Think Coach, a Fellow of the CIPD, and is licensed to use a range of psychometrics.  Julia completed the Henley MSc in Executive Coaching and Behavioural Change in 2014.   Heather Frost is the Founder of People and Practice, Co-founder of Think Perspective, an accredited coach, Doctoral Researcher and Visiting Tutor at Henley Business School. She is a Henley accredited coach, an accredited Senior Practitioner with the European Coaching & Mentoring Council (EMCC Global), and an accredited Coach with the International Coaching Federation (ICF). Heather has over 20 years of global experience coaching individuals, teams, leaders, and organisations for systemic behaviour change and development. With an MSc in Coaching & Behaviour Change from Henley Business School (UK) and a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology (BPsych) with a minor in Philosophy from the University of Newcastle in Australia, she holds the Professional Certificate in Executive Coaching from Henley Business School (PCEC), and is also a Breakthrough Coaching Advanced Practitioner from WBECS (now coaching.com).  Dr Elizabeth Crosse is a Master Certified Coach (MCC) and works as a coach, mentor and supervisor. Her practice focuses on Continuous Professional and Personal Development.  This has evolved from over 30 years of involvement with the coaching profession and being a research practitioner interested in how coaches develop expertise. Elizabeth is passionate about lifelong learning. She has navigated dyslexia and dyspraxia to transition from an early career in education to becoming a senior HR professional specialising in people development before setting up her coaching-consultancy business, specialising in strategic leadership. Along the way, she became a fellow of the CIPD, a Master Credentialed Coach with the ICF (MCC) and completed a Diploma in Coaching Supervision. She achieved three Master's degrees (Education, Counselling Psychology and Coaching and Mentoring) and a Doctorate in Coaching and Mentoring.  Your host, Dr Natalie Lancer, is a Chartered Coaching Psychologist, and British Psychological Society (BPS) Registered Supervisor. She is the Chair of the BPS's Division of Coaching Psychology and an accredited member of the Association for Coaching. In today's podcast episode, we are joined by Kate Simon to cover a very important topic: people development. This is one of the key pillars to determine where growth needs to happen in your company. You need to determine what your plan is, who you're meeting with and when, and what you're doing to pull out the best in people. You will get them in the door with your value proposition, but then what are you going to do?  The truth is that too many agents don't expect people will stay on their team long term. Instead, you should have a plan to succeed together for life. What do you need to do so people will never want to leave your company? This is what we're going to help you figure out today with the generous help of the Director of Coach Development at GloverU, Kate Simon.  You'll also learn:  Why it's beneficial to invest in people How to get a higher ROI on the money you spend on talent The importance of sharing success stories How to develop the skill of leadership All about upcoming opportunities to learn more Quotes  People are going to join your organization for what they get, and they're going to stay with you for who they become. - Kate Simon  Helping people is only the baseline requirement for being a leader. - Kate Simon  Leaders, it's not their job to understand you, it is your job to understand them. - Kate Simon  Key Points  1. There are three big reasons why you should invest in people. First, you will gain a higher ROI on the money you spend on talent. Second, you'll improve your company's culture. Do this by becoming a legacy leader who regularly shares the vision and cares for people. Third, it's the ultimate leverage—your team will attract, retain, and take the identity of you or the people you spotlight.  2. Caring about your team members is essential. Know what they want outside of the company, and understand how the company fits into that, not the other way around. Also, take yourself out of the center of the conversation and focus on boosting others up. This will greatly help your company.  3. There are five top skills that every leader needs to be fantastic at if they want to develop others and reap the benefits from that. The first is communication. Know that when you're meeting with people regularly, the emotional charge of the conversation goes down. The second is versatility, which is how you learn to say things and build trust with others. The third is empathy, which means that you should know what people's goals are and why. The fourth is knowing how to confront people lovingly, which you can do by following this formula: Compliment, confront, ask questions, and compliment. Lastly, there's active listening, which is arguably the most important. You need to be able to repeat back what you heard in a different way, ask clarifying questions, and then deeper questions.  4. Just because you are succeeding at something or know how to do it well doesn't mean you can teach others that skill. Leading is a separate skill you have to learn. There is an opportunity to learn for 16 weeks from the person who taught Jeff how to lead. Then there is also an upcoming retreat, from June 19 to 22, and we can share a discount code with you. Overall, know that there are a lot of opportunities to get involved.
