Rob breaks down the 357 strength progression, a training method that combines strength training with short work capacity efforts. He explains its origins, design, and practical applications, as well as the results of a study comparing it to other training methods. The discussion highlights the effectiveness of 357 in improving both strength and endurance, making it suitable for various athletes. Check MTI's 357 Strength Training Plan Takeaways 357 is a unique strength progression that combines strength training with work capacity. The method was influenced by various coaching philosophies, including those from Louis Simmons and Greg Glassman. The structure of 357 includes a 1RM lift, followed by a percentage-based lift, and a work capacity event. The work capacity events are designed to enhance hormonal response and improve overall fitness. A study showed that 357 matched strength gains of traditional methods while improving endurance. The program is designed to be fun and engaging for athletes. Weekly training can be structured to include total, lower, and upper body lifts. The ideal cycle duration for strength emphasis is around four to five weeks. 357 is suitable for athletes looking to improve both strength and work capacity. The program has remained consistent and effective over the years. ----more---- Mountain Tactical Institute Home Check out the MTI Athlete Team Apply to be a Paid MTI Athlete MTI's Daily Programming Streams

One of the really cool things about doing what I do is you get to meet and sometimes talk with people who become intellectual heroes to me. I don't have very many intellectual heroes because I try not to have human heroes, but intellectually speaking, Greg Glassman, founder, former CEO of CrossFit, is that to me. This is a guy who observed in a multi-billion dollar industry of fitness, no one could actually say what fitness meant. So, he put this amazing scientific mind with which God has gifted him to work and figured out how would you define fitness and then how would you achieve it. On today's episode we go over the literal definition of CrossFit, defined by the founder, Greg Glassman. We also go over Glassman's definition of fitness, which is considered (by many CrossFitters) as one of the best definitions the term "fitness" has ever received. Artist - The Script Song - Rain
On this episode James and Miguel discuss Greg Glassman's "100 Words of Fitness", the Albany CrossFit Combine, Miguel's journey into Gymnastics, James's Swim meet, and being a multi-sport athlete.
Glassman on CrossFit, Fitness Predictions, and Fixing America's Broken Scientific ProcessGreg Glassman is the founder and former CEO of CrossFit. This is the second part of an interview we did with him. First one really focusing on CrossFit, the death of one of the athletes in a drowning event. Very tragic as if you saw the first interview really hit Greg hard that that happened. We also sat down though with a purpose and that was to discuss the broken nature of science in America. The scientific process has been perverted and destroyed by people who seek to use it for profit.(...) Greg of course made a huge profit with the scientific mind in CrossFit by defining fitness and then going about achieving fitness. But he made some predictions. Greg predicted that his process constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity, which will increase your work capacity abroad across broad time and modal spectrums would result in creating athletes who could go squat 500 pounds and then turn around and run a sub five minute mile that was unheard of. People said you're insane. You can't do it. He predicted that this form of exercise would reverse type 2 diabetes and it did. He has the mind of a scientist and you know what he says doesn't work in science anymore? Peer reviewed papers. He has one thing in mind in terms of fixing science which is to show people something called a P value to teach it to feature it and to honor it.Alan's Soaps https://www.alansartisansoaps.comUse coupon code ‘TODD' to save an additional 10% off the bundle price.Bioptimizers https://bioptimizers.com/toddStart your journey to better health with MassZymes. In this episode of the Evolution of Medicine podcast, James Maskell speaks with Emily Kaplan of the Broken Science Initiative. They dive deep into the flaws of modern science, particularly in the context of medicine, and discuss how these issues contribute to the chronic disease epidemic. Emily Kaplan and Greg Glassman of CrossFit co-founded the Broken Science Initiative to address these deep-rooted problems and promote true scientific inquiry. During this episode, you will hear an argument that the modern scientific method, especially in medicine, has become corrupted by political and financial interests, leading to a replication crisis and widespread statistical manipulation. Emily Kaplan also differentiates medicine and public health, criticizing the latter as being more about political consensus than clinical significance, leading to flawed public health policies. Tune in for a conversation that explores: Why there has been a decline in moral obligation to patients in hospital settings The loss of physician authority and how that impacts patients Flawed research and corruption in science Critiques of public health How CrossFit can help reverse the chronic disease epidemic. And much more! This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding the deep issues within the scientific community and how they impact public health and medicine. Brothers Dick and Peter Dreissigacker used their experience as Olympic-level rowers to build a rowing machine that captured the sensation of being on the water. Initially made of bicycle parts in a Vermont barn, the machines had a limited market at first: mostly rowing clubs and schools that competed in the sport. But in the 2000's, business began to take off when Greg Glassman, the founder of Crossfit, began putting the machines into his gyms. Today Concept2 sells rowing machines to thousands of gyms and teams around the world, plus rowers, stationary bikes and skiing machines for people who train at home. This episode was produced by J.C. The news exploded while lives on air. We talk a swing a miss from Hiller, Mal annouces she's out for another season and what a better warm up really is in CrossFit. Written by Greg Glassman, Published April 2003 "In commercial gyms everywhere, warming up constitutes little more than spending fifteen or twenty minutes on a bike, treadmill, or stair climber. While better than nothing, this approach to warming up is largely a waste of time in that it will not improve flexibility, does not involve the whole body or major functional movements, misses an ideal opportunity for reinforcing and practicing some critical exercises, and poorly prepares an athlete for rigorous athletic training." - Greg Glassman

Written by Greg Glassman, Published March 2003 "It is CrossFit's contention that cops and soldiers are professional athletes. In fact, we argue that the physical preparedness required of military combat - and by extension law enforcement - matches and regularly surpasses that required of Olympic athletes." - Greg Glassman
Written by Greg Glassman, Published March 2003 "The push-up, long a favorite among junior high school P.E. teachers and Marine Corps drill instructors, is for many, more closely associated with punishment than anything else. Though common to group exercise programs, its use in serious strength and conditioning regimens is infrequent." - Greg Glassman
Written by Greg Glassman, Published 2003 "Our kids and our seniors squat, deadlift, push-press, push-jerk, clean and jerk, snatch, pull-up, dip, push-up, bench press, back/hip extend, sit-up, and rope climb. Less weight, fewer reps, more rest, whatever is required to allow exposure to the movements at a challenging but tolerable and intensity is all that is needed to accommodate most special needs."

Science, once a beacon of objectivity, has become marred by corruption and misuse. At BSI, we are on a mission to unravel the tyranny of broken science and those who exploit it. In this week's episode, we hear from Greg Glassman as he dives deep into the issues of broken science and addresses the consequences of research that will not replicate. This talk was recorded over a year ago in Santa Cruz, California. Glassman, utilizing the chalkboards at the old CrossFit HQ, outlines the objectives of The Broken Science Initiative. He writes on the chalkboard five critical facets of modern science and discusses how they resonate with common sense. We've worked hard to create show notes, which include a transcript of the episode with links out to all mentioned references allowing listeners to continue learning about Broken Science. A link to this week's show notes can be found on BrokenScience.org/podcasts
In this week's episode, we're sharing a talk given by BSI co-founder Greg Glassman in April 2023. Roughly 500 people gathered to hear about The Broken Science Initiative which was cohosted by Hillsdale College's Academy for Science and Freedom and BSI. Glassman explains, there are significant widespread issues within many areas of science, specifically within social sciences and medicine. In these areas, we are witnessing a shift towards pleasing gatekeepers and promoting industry interests. Glassman expresses his concern about the adverse impact this has had on medicine, as entire departments and fields have fallen victim to what he calls "epistemic debasement." Glassman shares personal anecdotes from his childhood. Reflecting on his own educational trajectory, he talks about his father, Jeff Glassman, who was the head of research and development at Hughes Aircraft Company. Talk about being in two-worlds . . . I was honored to attend the Broken Science Initiative's meeting in conservative Aromas, California last weekend. Greg Glassman, the Founder and former CEO of CrossFit started the Initiative to help rescue the practice of scientific rigor from con artists and politicians. This particular meeting was held on the Castro family Ranch. Known in CrossFit communities simply as “The Ranch”, it where the first CrossFit Games were held in 2008. It was a joy for me to get to see the Ranch, talk with the Castro brothers, meet the many cops and former elite military there and watch Greg and Dr. William Briggs talk about fixing broken science. But, it was what I observed off the Ranch that informs this Episode. While Aromas is conservative and hard-working, I spent most of my time in Santa Cruz, a weekend get-away spot for many San Francisco liberals. Believe it or not. I encountered masked-people still terrified of the unmasked, saw people obviously startled by my beard and general looks, and found myself doing my best job of being polite while confronting a woman who called our troops “moronic, gun-toting rednecks.” It was at the airport, though, where the fracture in our society became so clear and on the plane back where God convicted me. At the Ranch, on the base “the Hill”, anyone who is a fan of the sport knows about the Hill. Greg Glassman begins his address. What does God's Word say? Proverbs 24:30-34 I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.Ezekiel 16:49 Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.Episode 882 Links:The Broken Science InitiativeThe CrossFit Games - Men's Ranch Mini ChipperExquisitely Boredby Pete Townshend The tissue box is emptyNo coffee for my creamDogs howl in the alleyCrazy women screamSome kids shout from their pick up truckThey're stoned on life and beerFifty radios playing in this streetBut I'm still hardly hereExquisitely bored in CaliforniaWe take our trouble to the CrestExquisitely bored in CaliforniaExquisitely bored, Just like all the restWhen the sun shines things'll get movingYou feel close to the starsThere are good times walking in LagunaBut it rains in my heartThe peasants here are starvingThey look out there barrels out in spacePray TV looks like pay TV to meIt's just a curse on the human raceI take a drive up to L.A.In my gas guzzling limousineThere's a whole lot of crazy people up thereLiving out a life in sweet ennuiExquisitely bored in CaliforniaWe take our trouble to the CrestExquisitely bored in CaliforniaExquisitely bored, Just like all the restWhen the sun shines things'll get movingYou feel close to the starsThere are good times walking in LagunaBut it rains in my heartExquisitely bored in CaliforniaWe take our trouble to the CrestExquisitely bored in CaliforniaExquisitely bored, Just like all the rest4Patriots https://4patriots.com Protect your family with Food kits, solar generators and more at 4Patriots. Some of these collaborations include performances and/or recordings with Andy and Jerry González, Ibrahim Ferrer (Buena Vista Social Club), Pío Leyva (Buena Vista Social Club), Manuel “Puntillita” Alicea (Buena Vista Social Club), Bobby Carcassés, Orlando “Cachaíto” López, Juan Pablo Torres, NEA Jazz Master Cándido Camero, Larry Harlow, Ruben Blades, Típica 73, John “Dandy” Rodríguez, David Oquendo, Xiomara Laugart, Nicky Marrero, Nelson González, Carlos Abadie, Los Hacheros, Pedrito Martínez, Roman Díaz, Paul Carlon, Adonis Puentes, Pablo Menéndez, Bobby Sanabria, Ralph Irizarry, Charlie Sepulveda, Luis Marín, Humberto Ramírez, Harvie S., Hiram “El Pavo” Remón, Gene Jefferson, Frank Anderson, Enid Lowe, Jared Gold, Greg Glassman, Bobby Harden, Brian Lynch, Mark Weinstein, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Larry Goldings, Chico Álvarez, Alfredo “Chocolate” Armenteros, Emilio Barretto, Eddie Zervigón, José Fajardo, Rudy Calzado, Los Afortunados, Jose Conde, Kaori and Yuko Fujii, Roberto Rodríguez, Maurice El Medioni, Michael Torsone, and many others. As the leader of the Latin jazz group, Sonido Isleño (founded in 1996), he has performed throughout North and South America, Europe, and the Caribbean while releasing five internationally acclaimed albums of his original compositions. In 2007, Lapidus served as musical director and arranger for Garota de Ipanema(JVC/Victor Japan) with Kaori Fujii and toured Japan twice. In 2008, he recorded Herencia Judía and in 2014, he released his eighth album as a leader, Ochósi Blues. Blues for Ochún (2023) is his ninth album as a leader. As a composer, Lapidus' music has been recorded by groups in Cuba and Japan and has been featured in documentaries and television. In 2015, Latin Jazz USA awarded Lapidus a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to Afro-Latin music. In 2015, he wrote the liner notes, contributed an original composition, sang, and played electric guitar and Cuban tres on Andy González's Grammy™-nominated album, Entre Colegas. As profiled on the 2023 television show, Shades of Us (https://youtu.be/I_xMYUtgAhA), Benjamin Lapidus was born in Hershey, PA in 1972 to first-generation Brooklynites and the family moved almost 15 times before returning to New York City when Lapidus was 14. Trained in piano from a young age, he moved through a variety of instruments including trumpet and bass before concentrating on the guitar. Lapidus was exposed to music by his grandmother and his father, who played in Latin and jazz bands in the Catskills in the 1950s. Through his father's record collection and stories of his father's visits with his Latin American relatives, the seeds of Latin music were planted. Yet it wasn't until the 1980s that the youngest Lapidus became immersed in Latin music when he moved to a predominantly Latin neighborhood in New York City, where numerous important musicians also resided. Living a block away from Mikel's jazz club, Lapidus still has vivid memories of practicing in Mario Rivera's house or seeing Mario Bauzá walk down the street. Deciding he needed a complete musical education, Lapidus earned two degrees from Oberlin Conservatory and Oberlin College, becoming one of the program's first jazz guitar graduates. In 1994, Lapidus started to play the Puerto Rican cuatro and Cuban tres. After leading his own quartet at festivals and clubs throughout Europe and winning a grant to study briefly with Steve Lacy in Paris, he returned to the U.S. and worked with Joe McPhee, Joe Giardullo, Tani Tabal, Thomas Workman, and other creative improvisers. At the same time, Lapidus began performing with Larry Harlow, Alex Torres, and other Latin music luminaries in New York and Puerto Rico. Lapidus earned a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at the CUNY Graduate Center in 2002. His travels to Cuba acquainted him with distant relatives and grounded him in the music of Eastern Cuba. He has taught guitar and Cuban tres at the New School and popular music of the Caribbean, Latin music in New York, and world music at Queens College and John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. Today, Lapidus is a professor in the Department of art and Music at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and on the Doctoral Faculty of the Graduate Center, CUNY. In addition, he has served as scholar-in-residence with the New York Center for Jungian Studies and the Jewish Museum during several humanitarian missions to the Jewish communities of Cuba between 2004-2016. In 2008, Lapidus published the first-ever book on the Eastern Cuban musical genre changüí called Origins of Cuban Music and Dance: Changüí (Scarecrow Press). He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, translations, and presented papers at international conferences on Cuban music, Puerto Rican music, Latin jazz, and improvisation. He has also written liner notes for a number of recordings. In 2013, Lapidus won a prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) fellowship for his critically acclaimed book New York and the International Sound of Latin Music, 1940-1990 (University Press of Mississippi, 2021). With endorsements from Rubén Blades, Ilán Stavins, and other prominent academics around the world, this ground-breaking book has been featured on BBC 3 Music Matters, NPR's Afropop, and Alt. Latino shows as well as the Miami International Book Fair and countless news outlets. The book maintains its bestseller ranking in Amazon's top 20 salsa books since its release. "The template is engineered to allow for a wide and constantly varied stimulus, randomized within some parameters, but still true to the aims and purposes of CrossFit as described in the “What is Fitness?” issue. Our template contains sufficient structure to formalize or define our programming objectives while not setting in stone parameters that must be left to variance if the workouts are going to meet our needs. That is our mission – to ideally blend structure and flexibility." - Greg Glassman

I haven't been this excited about a coach's body of work since reading the original CrossFit Journal articles by Greg Glassman in 2005. Rich Diaz's work in the endurance community and his unique protocol for energy system training (The "Flow" Method") has been very eye-opening for me personally in my fitness pursuits, and I believe more coaches and athletes should be exposed to his unique training method. His resume is beyond impressive and includes working with some of the best athletes in fitness racing today, including OCR champions such as Veejay Jones, Hyrox champions like Hunter McIntyre, and high-level CF athletes such as Ryan Fischer.
