“It's very difficult to find venues in the UK. Teams in the USA have permanent venues where they train. We're stuck with pokey little sports halls where we're constantly fighting the badminton mafia for space.” Today's episode is an adrenaline-fueled journey into the world of roller derby with the formidable Kristen Dusting, a silver medalist in the 2014 Roller Derby World Cup who's seen it all. We explore the incredible history and growth of what many consider to be the most inclusive of sports - revolutionary, loudly LGBTQ plus inclusive, actively anti-racist, and women and non-binary led. From the sport's humble beginnings in the era of the Great Depression to its punk rock-fueled resurgence and today's dynamic scene, we explore the essence of roller derby's allure. The sport has become a beacon of inclusion, championing women and non-binary individuals in a way few sports have managed.Kristen's been playing roller derby with London since the sport's beginnings in the UK in 2006 and has been very much part of growing this grassroots women's and non-binary sport from the ground up, not just within the UK but globally. When not skating or coaching, Kristen owns a skate shop where she combines her passion for the sport with roller skates and the wonderful roller derby community. She continues to play for London roller derby's top team, London Brawling, who are currently ranked number one in Europe and hope to make it to the 2024 World Championships in Portland, Oregon. We also celebrate the sport's profound impact on mental health and its proud connection to the LGBTQ+ community, fostering an environment where everyone can flourish. As Kristen mentioned, if you're interested in getting involved as Team Manager for England Roller Derby in the next world championships please drop an email to Englandrollerderby@gmail.comThank you to Sport England who support The Game Changers Podcast with a National Lottery award.Find out more about The Game Changers podcast here: https://www.fearlesswomen.co.uk/thegamechangersHosted by Sue AnstissProduced by Sam Walker, What Goes On MediaA Fearless Women production

In the 2019 WFTDA postseason playoffs, the wider roller derby universe witnessed the power and ability of Argentinean roller derby. Buenos Aires’s 2 x 4 became the first South American team to qualify for and compete at Champs. Sailor City, also from Argentina’s capital city, won the Continental Cup East tournament. It was also arguably the first time the derby community learned of economic hardships faced by Latin American derby athletes, whose monthly salaries and national currencies are a fraction of their US and European counterparts. But what might’ve been lost at the time was that 2x4 and Sailor City’s successes were the tip of an iceberg hinting at a whole glacier brimming with derby passion, activity, and accomplishment. Today’s guest, Maki Antoinette, Head Non-Skating Official for Sailor, fills in some of that obscured context. Maki has been involved in Argentinean roller derby for most of its existence and in addition to her NSO activity, she is also the South American chair for the Roller Derby World Cup. So sit back and enjoy. EPISODE LINKS: Oficiales de Roller Derby Argentina: https://twitter.com/SomosORDA Sailor City Roller Derby’s Go Fund Me: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-sailor-city-to-travel
For this episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down to chat with our special guest, Laci Knight! Laci has been coaching Roller Derby as a Captain, Trainer, and Coach since 2009 for both the LA Derby Dolls (LADD) and then for Angel City Derby (ACD). On this week's episode of Off the Track, Mick Swagger from Team Indigenous is joined by Carly Harper aka The Lovely Biertrix. You may recognize her voice as she is a long time Roller Derby announcer who has been in the European announcing scene for a number of years. Biertrix is from my favorite city in the UK; Manchester, a former skater who founded Rainy City Roller Derby and skated with them for five seasons. She has announced extensively at tournaments across Europe and America, including the Women's Roller Derby World Cup in 2014 & 2018, 2016 & 2017 WFTDA Division 1 playoffs, 2017 WFTDA championships. Biertrix was instrumental in bringing the Roller Derby World Cup to Manchester in 2018 with the help of a brilliant team. WiSP Sports Radio is brought to you by Hyland's Earache Drops. Mick Swagger is a former member of the USA Roller Derby team and the founder of Team indigenous. She is originally from the Diné Indigenous community in North America and the idea for a team of indigenous women came about through social media and it's resulted in a team that took part in the Roller Derby World Cup earlier this year. Mick tells Chris Stafford that when she put out a call for women to apply for the team more than 60 women came forward of which 20 were selected and the team now comprises women from different nations from the US, Canada, South America, New Zealand and beyond. And they come from a range of different professional backgrounds from a heavy metal worker to astronaut and lawyer. The women have come from far and wide. A team indigenous is unique in its heritage and culture and has a community that reaches far beyond sport making the women unique role models among marginalised people. It's also given the women an opportunity to be among their own to learn of the families and the other nations and they also have another mission to raise awareness of the treatment of Indigenous communities. The Indigenous women who were murdered or disappeared along the "Highway of Tears" from 1969 to 2011 the fundraising contributes to missing and murdered women USA a charity based in the US. The women are also making a statement by coming together as a sports team and building a community across the nations which is giving a voice to the wider issues of indigenous people. Team Indigenous recently took part in the 2018 Roller Derby World Cup in England, an achievement in itself and for a new team of women this is something to be especially proud of. Happy 2018! In our first episode of the year, we give you a Team Announcer-centric recap of the Roller Derby World Cup in Manchester, England (hosted by the fantastic Rainy City Roller Derby). Hammer had the good fortune to make the trip to announce the world's biggest derby blowout and tells us all about it in an interview with Allie. Ham also had the chance to take a side trip to Dublin after the festivities were over and enjoyed some whiskey and conversation with Dublin Roller Derby coach extraordinare, Violent Bob. They talk the history of the league, derby in Ireland, and Bob's love of the Green Bay Packers, among other things. Fans of the TV show "Father Ted" will especially appreciate DRD's home team names. ;) We also feature an ADORABLE interview with Diamond Rough (of MNRG) and Chad (of the Aquaman Army) about their story of derby love. We're taking written and recorded submissions for this as an ongoing feature, too! If YOU have a story of derby love - any and all kinds, in any form - and want us to feature it on an episode, please do drop us a line at ssderbypodcast@gmail.com. Speaking of awesome listener submitted content, we're thrilled to include a song from the Icelandic hardcore feminist thrash band Dauðyflin. Check 'em out on Bandcamp (and buy their music!), and in these write-ups from Pitchfork. Two of the members are affiliated with Team Iceland. The lead singer, who goes by Grim Creeper, plays for the Roller Derby Iceland travel team, Ragnarök. Many thanks to her sister, Bitchblade, for making the submission!
