In this week's episode, McKay discusses the importance of an abundance mindset. He opens the podcast by discussing Britney Bowe's Olympic history and her decision to give up her spot in the 2022 Olympic trials to Erin Jackson. This selfless act hardly granted Bowe a medal, but it led Jackson to win gold in the women's 500 m speed skating event. Christensen argues that this is a prime example of abundance thinking and grace. Because humans tend to resent and envy the success of others, especially those in close proximity, Christensen urges the audience to replace envy and resentment with grace. He then goes on to detail another Olympic tale between Mikaela Shiffrin and Sophia Goggia. After Shiffrin practiced with Goggia's skis and got her fastest time, Goggia gave Shiffrin her skis before an event in the hopes that she might be as successful in the competition as she was in practice. The story exemplifies how abundance and grace can transform our attitudes and help others in a positive way. In contrast, McKay then tells the audience about the tense relationship between Thomas Edison and his once student, Nikola Tesla. When Edison dismissed and admonished Tesla for one of his suggestions, Tesla quit and decided to patent his own ideas. He eventually received the notoriety he deserved and was tasked with engineering Chicago's famous World Fair instead of Thomas Edison. McKay segues into the episode's conclusion where he discusses the inherent value of personal worth and security that comes from an abundant mindset. He closes out the podcast with a quick anecdote about Jesse Owens and Luz Long's friendship that blossomed from the 1936 Olympic Games. Long is rumored to have given Owens advice before his gold medal run, despite being Owens' opposition. While Owens came out on top, the pair developed a lifelong friendship in the face of a disapproving Nazi Germany. Long story short, McKay advises that if we truly believe that there is enough success and happiness to go round, prosperity will come. The Finer Details of This Episode:The story of Britney Bowe giving up her spot so that Erin Jackson could win GoldThe importance of rejoicing in others' victoriesWhat abundant thinking isWhy we resent others' successMen envy occupational success; women envy physical attractivenessWhy we envy close friends moreHow to replace envy with graceSophia Goggia gifting Mikaela Shiffrin her skis for an eventEdison's scarcity mentality and how he devalued Tesla's ideasThe inherent value of personal worth and securityThe friendship between Jesse Owens and Luz LongQuotes: “Every day, in most things we do, we have a choice. De Schaatspodcast heeft de sleutels in handen gekregen van de VIP-lounge van de M-Wave. En daar schuiven Dione Voskamp en Johan de Wit aan. Voskamp verbaasde dit weekend door vlak achter Erin Jackson tweede te worden op de 500 meter. En De Wit kent Nagano op z'n duimpje. Voskamp vertelt over haar olympische dromen.

It's now official! The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are returning to Utah in 2034. The International Olympic Committee made the call on July 24. In this episode of Last Chair, we'll explore the games to come looking at a few venues outside of the traditional skiing and snowboarding realm. With all of the 2002 Olympic venues still in place and operating, the 2034 edition will require no permanent venue construction. The IOC welcomed this sustainable approach. In 2034, around a dozen venues will be used—all within an hour's drive of the Athlete Village on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. The caretaker of many of the venues is the Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation. President and CEO Colin Hilton talks about the Utah Olympic Park, with its bobsled, skeleton, and luge sliding track, as well as the towering ski jumps. Hilton also oversaw the assembling of all venues for the 2034 bid and will give an overview of what we can expect. One of the most popular Olympic sports today is biathlon – an unusual combination of cross country skiing and marksmanship. Utah native Vincent Bonacci, a member of the U.S. Biathlon Team, will talk about the sport, its uniqueness and why the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center is such a vital venue. We'll then head to the sliding track at the Utah Olympic Park – known as one of the fastest in the world. Utah native Kaysha Love will talk about how she went from a top-tier high school and collegiate sprinter to becoming one of the best bobsledders in the world in just a few years. Finally, we'll talk about winning Olympic gold with 500m long-track speedskating star Erin Jackson. A Florida native, Jackson talks about her transition from inline skating to ice, tells the story about her improbable journey to Beijing to win gold, and relates (with a smile) her weekend ski experience at Deer Valley Resort.

Speed skater Erin Jackson was the first Black girl EVER to win an individual gold medal at the Winter Olympics in 2022. But guess what? It's insanely expensive to train and compete as an Olympian and you get paid an annual salary of exactly zero dollars to do it – unless you win a medal and even then you gotta make that paycheck last until the next Olympics. We sat down with Erin to talk about the price of being the best in the world, and how to make a living doing what you love. Sexual health advocates say more people should be testing regularly for sexually transmitted infections - and encouraged to do so by their health practitioners. There were just over 25,000 chlamydia cases, nearly 7,000 gonorrhoea cases, and 486 syphilis cases during 2022 - the most recent full year that statistics are available. This was an increase in gonorrhoea and syphilis cases, while chlamydia notifications remained stable. Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa, known until recently as Family Planning, says recent research suggests two thirds of female patients have never had a health practitioner talk to them about getting an STI test, unless they themselves brought it up, or had symptoms. They say self testing can be a good option but there are barriers to this and there must be proper follow up. Kathryn speaks with Director Hauora Maori and Equity at Sexual Wellbeing Aotearoa, Dr Tania Huria, Wellington youth GP Dr Emily Cavana and Erin Jackson, co-founder of EttieKits - a home testing kit for STIs, launched late last year.

Although she finished first in her qualifying race, US speedskater Brittany Bowe gave up her chance to compete in the 500-meter event at the 2022 Winter Olympics to teammate Erin Jackson. Jackson had an unfortunate slip in the race that left her just one place away from making the team. What motivated Bowe to relinquish the spot she’d earned? Friendship. Having trained together for years, Bowe believed Jackson deserved a spot on the team. Bowe was right. Jackson become the first US Black woman to win a Winter Olympic gold medal in an individual event. In the deep friendship between Jonathan and David in the Old Testament, there was also sacrifice. Jonathan was King Saul’s oldest son and heir to Israel’s throne. When God rejected Saul and choose David to be king (1 Samuel 16:1–12), Jonathan could have continued to claim a right for the throne. Instead, he sacrificed his own personal interests for David. Jonathan even devised a plan to protect David by sending him away when David’s life was threatened (20:18–23). As they parted, Jonathan encouraged David saying, “Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord” (20:42). Jonathan and David’s friendship was characterized by love even at great personal cost. It’s a beautiful reminder that God is powerfully at work when we love our friends more than ourselves (John 16:12–13).

Brian Fitzgibbon owns and operates Fibrenew Vancouver. He purchased the business in 2010 and for eight years ran the franchise as an owner / operator - taking care of everything in the operation. Doing the repair work, fielding all inbound inquiries, marketing and sales, handling the scheduling, billing, bookkeeping and more. He reached a point to which wearing all those hats was not sustainable for the long haul. So he made a switch and hired an admin to quarterback the organization and day-to-day logistics of running the business. Fibrenew Vancouver was transformed the moment Erin Jackson came on board. She helped pave the way for Brian to do more work, which increased his revenue, stayed more organized, was able to take proper vacations, and have more family time.In this conversation, you'll hear how Brian and Erin have structured everything and about Erin's changing role in the business today which continues to open up more opportunities. We hope you enjoy listening in, cheers!

The Finer Details of This Episode: The story of Britney Bowe giving up her spot so that Erin Jackson could win Gold The importance of rejoicing in others' victories What abundant thinking is Why we resent others' success Men envy occupational success; women envy physical attractiveness Why we envy close friends more How to replace envy with grace Sophia Goggia gifting Mikaela Shiffrin her skis for an event Edison's scarcity mentality and how he devalued Tesla's ideas The inherent value of personal worth and security The friendship between Jesse Owens and Luz Long Quotes: “Every day, in most things we do, we have a choice. We can see things as scarce, like the chances to win a race at the Olympics and decide not to help or cheer others on, or we can see things as abundant—that there is more than enough for everyone.” “I believe one of the most powerful characteristics you can develop in life, one that will reward you for years to come, is to rejoice in the other person's victory.” “It's common that our reaction to other people's success isn't always positive. We tend to draw comparisons between what we have and what we perceive others are having—our thoughts get distorted and what they have grows in our minds and what we have shrinks at the same time.” “In one survey, more than 74% of respondents reported experiencing major envy recently in their lives. Surprisingly, researchers found that we most often envy others of our own gender.” “When you take envy out of your heart, it needs to be replaced with something, otherwise the void will be filled with envy again. So what do you fill it with? Grace.” “Most people are deeply scripted in what I call the scarcity mentality. They see life as having only so much as though there is only one pie out there. And if...

The guys recap Super Bowl 56. It was a star-studded event. Kirk, in attendance covering the game for the Rams, has never seen so many celebrities in one spot. The halftime show will never appeal to everyone. There is clearly a bridge being built by the league. Many things resonated with Kirk during the Super Bowl in terms of awareness, especially the pregame honors of the 'Forgotten Firsts'. Regardless of the reports behind it, it was a lightning rod moment when Eminem paid homage to Colin Kaepernick by taking a knee after his performance. This year's halftime show was for the culture. Jason talks about his part in this weekend's HBCU doubleheader. Jason will call a MEAC game during All-Star Weekend alongside HBCU grad and NBA champion, Rick Mahorn. The NBA HBCU Classic presented by AT&T will pit Howard University and Morgan State University. The NBA HBCU Classic was developed by the NBA as part of its ongoing commitment to the HBCU community – specifically around professional development, career advancement, and increased support and awareness for HBCU athletics and institutions.**Black History Month Spotlight** - The NY Rens. The guys discuss the very first black-owned and operated professional basketball team, The New York Renaissance, aka The NY Rens. This team was founded in 1923, in Harlem, before the NBA was formed. They barnstormed across America which was common for black leagues/teams of that era. At one time this team won 88 consecutive games. Show wraps as the guy discuss Erin Jackson making gold medal history at the Winter Olympics in China this week. Brittany Bowe stepped up to be an amazing teammate. Rob Jay, Jackson State University BroadcasterRob is taking part this weekend in a special HBCU Doubleheader that can be heard on SiriusXM. Rob is calling the HBCU Legacy Bowl. The 'Deion Effect' has brought great attention to Jackson State as well as the SWAC. Rob, wants to be able to tell the stories about the people at HBCUs. They are fascinating people both on the field/court and behind the scenes.Deion Sanders used the pandemic to get closer to his players and see exactly what he had. Some schools didn't do anything during the pandemic. You will see just how great the talent level is at HBCUs during this game. This inaugural game will hopefully branch out into other sports. This has the potential to be very special for HBCU athletics. The NIL deals can help level the playing field for HBCUs. The fans bases are very passionate about HBCU athletics. They will show up in New Orleans Rob remembers a true pioneer, Willie Richardson. He and many others would be so proud to see the progress HBCU athletics are making right now. Erin Jackson grew up competing in inline skating and roller derby as a rink rat in Ocala, Fla. Now, she's America's best hope for gold in long-track speed skating at the Winter Olympics. Considered a sure bet to make the U.S. team, Jackson slipped during qualifying and nearly missed the games until a fateful decision made by her childhood idol, Brittany Bowe, gave her a ticket to back to the Olympics. Senior writer Stephanie Apstein wrote SI's cover story on Erin Jackson and tells us about her incredible journey from Florida to Beijing. SI Cover story: Erin Jackson Is Ready to Make a Statement on Ice As the sports spotlight shifts to Beijing, not all invited guests are showing up to the party. Along with Great Britain, Canada and Australia, the United States is enacting a “diplomatic boycott” of the Beijing games, which means no government officials will attend, though athletes will still compete. With critics like French President Emmanuel Macron dismissing these efforts as “insignificant,” Ben Rhodes is here to tell us why the conversation around these Beijing games is already very different from 2008, the last time China hosted the Olympics. Rhodes served as deputy national security adviser for the Obama administration, and he's cohost of Crooked Media's Pod Save the World.
