Sarah Newberry-Moore grew up with a strong tradition of sailing in her family. However, it wasn’t until she joined her middle school sailing team at age 12, that she caught the bug for competition. At that point, she was the only girl on her team, and she was determined to beat all of the boys. After putting in long hours filled with hard work, Newberry had done what she set out to do and was ready to push her limits even further. In seeking out more competition, she was attracted to multihulls for their speed and physically demanding nature. By 2006, she had already won the U.S. Youth Multihull Championships. Within a few more short years, she was the top-ranked female multihull skipper in the United States. During the 2016 quadrennium, Newberry set her sights on success in the Nacra 17 class. She made it to the top of the fleet multiple times, but unfortunately missed out on selection to the Olympic Games. Despite falling short of her goal, Newberry pivoted her sights towards training for 2020 and served as a training partner for the Team USA boat. Since then, she has partnered with David Liebenberg. The two have shown their ability to make it to the top of the fleet and are worthy candidates for selection to the 2020 Games. On this week’s episode Chris and Jane discuss children, ponies and summer fun and reflect on their childhood enjoying hours of sheer joy and happiness without a care in the world. The recent evidence of abuse in sport has cast a dark shadow on those glorious yet vulnerable years of youth indulging in sport with high ambitions and total dedication. Their love for sport and complete trust in their coaches and support staff has sometimes been cruelly exploited in a way that will never heal. Their scars, whether emotional, psychological or physical will never leave them, even though the passage of time helps them to come to terms with their ordeals. Children naturally surrender to adult supervision with an innocence and naivety that should be respected but tragically sometimes is not. The Horse Show takes on a new look and feel this week as Chris is joined by an old friend Jane Wallace, making her podcasting debut as a co-host. Their topic of discussion is over-tight nose-bands as Jane shares her lifetime’s experience from showing ponies to international eventing, from teaching to training. She explains why taking the time for building the foundation to a house is the perfect metaphor for understanding why the principles of a broad training base are critical. Why there are times when some horses need a tight nose-band but how important it is to no over-tighten. Jane talks about the consequences of creating this vicious circle, which is an anathema to correct training. Some sound advice here and some reasons why competition stewards are not intercepting when they see nose-bands that are clearly too tight. And if you stay to the end you’ll hear them have some fun as they recall some early lessons in basic equitation… and that means going back to their pony days!
