Heigh- Ho, western fans! This week on Fabulous Film and friends we're going to circle back and discuss Jane Campion's 2021 comeback effort and Oscar frontrunner, The Power of The Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee. It was mentioned on our year in review last week as a top film, but no time was spent hunkering down on its finer points. I'm yer host Gino Caputi and joining me on this conceptual cattle drive is my sister and unabashed Jane Campion lover Roseanne Caputi, don't get her started on The Piano, Son of a Dairyman and grandson to one of Eastern Oregon's great cattle barons David Johnson, D.M.D., New Plymouth Idaho's own Burton Brown, no stranger to cow manure he. And a man who wore a cowboy hat once in a Penn State black box theater reimagining of As You Like It, GORDON ALEX ROBERTSON!Just do you don't get lost: The synopsis In The Power of The Dog, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons play Phil and George Burbank, respectively, two rich Montana cattle ranchers who on a drive with their ranch hands, stop in a town called Beech where they dine and sleep at an Inn run by a suicide widow Rose Gordon and her lisping, paper flower-making son, Peter. Phil is cruel and derisive of Rose's sensitive son, while George is understanding and serves as a shoulder for Rose to cry on after Phil and his team of cowpolks clear out. Rose and George form an attachment and are soon married, causing Phil to withdraw from the family and to treat Rose and her son in an even pettier and wickeder manner. Phil's treatment of Rose drives her to take up drinking and, in an effort to gall Rose, perhaps to the point of madness and death, Phil takes Peter under his wing. Teaching Peter to ride and to build fences like a true cow polk, Phil seems to succeed in his plan until he is completely blindsided by the far more hard-edged and formidable Peter. What's it all about? What is The Power of The Dog? Find out!

The banners in our sanctuary reflect our commitment to seek “wisdom from the world’s religions that inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life.” Today we unveil a new banner that represents Indigenous spirituality. It has been created for us by our friends at the Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society and is a long-awaited addition to our sanctuary. This banner will remind us of our commitment not only to seeking wisdom but also to reconciliation in Canada, which is all about seeking wholeness and balance that has eluded our society for so long. We offer special thanks to Elder Rose Wabasca, our guest musician Lloyd Cardinal, and our Friends from Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society. 00:00 1 Welcome by Gordon Ritchie 02:38 2 Prelude and Banner Procession music by Lloyd Cardinal 09:32 3 Opening Words “For the Beauty of the Earth” by Barbara J . We believe in the compassion of the human heart, the warmth of community, the pursuit of justice and the search of meaning in our lives. We gather with gratitude on traditional Cree lands that are now a part of Treaty Six and shared by many nations. A treaty is an inheritance, a responsibility and a relationship. Often our Alarm bells go off, blood pressure rises and our capacity to listen stops, when we hear ideas and opinions that seem radically different than ours. What techniques can we use to increase trust and create the foundation for truly Restorative Conversations? How might we create an environment that encourages people to listen deeply and speak openly? Join Rose Gordon, Restorative Justice Facilitator, in exploring these questions and tips for facilitating conversations that can make a difference. Rose Gordon has been facilitating Restorative Justice for youth for over a decade. She’s facilitated Restorative Approaches trainings in New Mexico and Thailand and views Restorative Approaches as a way of building peaceful communities and an “inoculation” against violence. Rose is the Program Coordinator for the Taos County Juvenile Justice Continuum, has been interviewed on Peace Talks Radio, is a member of the International Community of Restorative Researchers, co-hosted the PeaceXPeace Western and Muslim Women’s Dialogues and was invited to participate in the East Meets West Restorative Justice Summit in Turkey. Join Rose Gordon and Zena Zumeta as they talk about what Restorative Justice and other Restorative processes are, how they work, why Restorative Justice is an effective intervention with youth who have engaged in violence and its impact on youth recidivism. Rose has facilitated Restorative Approaches trainings in New Mexico and Thailand. She views Restorative Approaches as a way of building peaceful communities and an “inoculation” against violence. We hope that we, and our family and loved ones will come together in the kindest ways when someone we care about is dying. We hope the shared experience of loss will bring out the best in us. But grief and loss brings all kinds of feelings to the surface-sweet memories and shared pleasure right along with sorrow, old wounds and resentments. And of course, fears about our own mortality. There are ways to care for ourselves, clear the air before conflict arises and work together to tend our broken-open hearts and bring a healing balm to the dying time of life. Rose Gordon is the founder of Circle of Compassionate Care, dedicated to serving people who are dying and their families. Rose acts as a midwife for the dying during this deeply meaningful and challenging time of their life. She has a degree in Hospice and Grief Counseling and over 2 decades of direct experience with the dying and their families. Rose worked with the Office of the Medical Examiner, served for 5 years as Director of the Being with Dying Program at a Zen Center, teaches Compassionate Care of the Dying and Self-Care for Caregivers to community members and healthcare professionals in the U.S. and overseas, and currently manages and trains Hospice volunteers and offers Spiritual Care through Mountain Home Health Hospice in Taos, New Mexico. Rose uses her life experience, her skills in deep listening and over a decade of work with Council process to illuminate the resiliency and capacity within the people she serves, helping them to bring forward the best of who they are to meet the dying time of life.
