We returned to the Hem/Onc clinic at Arkansas Children's Hospital on Monday morning, fully prepared for Hannah to be admitted so she could finally start her new chemotherapy treatments. But when her bloodwork showed a platelet level of 3,000 (normal is over 150,000), we knew we would not be starting that day. With a platelet count that low, she was at risk for excessive bleeding ... and excessive bleeding is a potential side effect of Avastin, the chemotherapy drug she would be receiving. Her red blood counts were also quite low, so instead of chemo, Hannah spent the day receiving transfusions of platelets and blood.Thank you for joining me for another bonus episode of the While We're Waiting podcast in this year-long series in which I share our family's experiences as our teenage daughter Hannah battled glioblastoma brain cancer from February 2008 through February 2009. My desire is to process through the events of those twelve months with the perspective that 16 years has brought … and point listeners to hope in Jesus along the way.I would love to hear your thoughts on the show. Elder, "I just don't feel like laughing, my life is upside down!" We all experience those days. However, did you know that the Bible says, "A Cheerful Heart is Good Medicine!" That same scripture also says, "But a crushed spirit dries up the bones." YIKES!! Pro. 31:25 "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come." A little bit of laughter will lighten your load and make you feel better if you give time a chance. You will look back one day and say it wasn't as bad as it seemed. Trust God, and turn it over to Jesus, He can work out any problem! Now smile and remember you are a child of the King! When someone says how big the problem is, tell them how big your God is! and SMILE! Blessings, Presiding Elder Barbara Hayes Jesus Calling | NIV

In this episode we discusses how to be good medicine for our families by fostering joy in our own lives. Nikki emphasizes the difference between joy and happiness, stating that joy is an attitude that exists separate from circumstances. She highlights the importance of choosing joy and modeling it for the family. Nikki gives a list of questions that we ca ask ourselves to assess our default state of mind and mindset throughout the day. She then provides five things that can help foster joy, including having realistic expectations, taking time to connect, avoiding multitasking, practicing self-care, and cultivating gratitude. The episode concludes with a challenge to be a dose of good medicine to loved ones and others.Proverbs 17:22 - “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.” THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JOY AND HAPPINESS:What is joy? What is happiness? And what is the difference between joy and happiness? The difference between joy and happiness lives in the mind and heart.Joy is a little word. Happiness is a bigger word.Joy is in the heart. Happiness is on the face.Joy is of the soul. Happiness is of the moment.Joy transcends. Happiness reacts.Joy embraces peace and contentment, waiting to be discovered.Joy runs deep and overflows, while happiness hugs hello.Joy is a practice and a behavior. It's deliberate and intentional. Happiness comes and goes blithely along its way.Joy is profound and Scriptural. "Don't worry, rejoice." Happiness is a balm. This episode is available as a video podcast on Spotify. Dr Gary Turnbull is a Director of The Lincoln Institute, a coach, speaker and facilitator in the fields of veterinary practice management and leadership, veterinary business models and life balance strategies. He's also a former practice owner with decades of clinical vetting and leadership experience under his belt. Through his work at The Lincoln Institute, Gary helps practice owners and employees with "people problems”, team culture, staff engagement, productivity and profit. And it's exactly the intersection between these things that I wanted to talk to Gary about: the seemingly opposing needs for productivity and profit from a practice owner's perspective with the desire of employed vets to have an engaged workplace with great culture. I love Gary's role as a coach for both practice owners AND employed vets, because gives him some unique insights into topics like how team leaders can motivate productivity without the team feeling that it's just more ways that the boss wants us to make them more money, how to productively give and receive feedback about productivity, why and how team leaders need to be crystal clear about their practice values, and for employed vets - how to approach that annual review and how to show value when you're not the vet who bills the big surgeries. Gary also helps me with a guide to make those client money conversions a lot less anxiety-inducing, and I put his coaching skills around conflict situations to the test with the big question: how do you deal with that accusation of ‘all you care about is the money.' Topic list: 11:25 The importance of leadership nuance and messaging. 19:48 How to set clear, supportive expectations for your team. 22:13 Always come back to standards of care over "purse protecting". 27:29 We need more data than an average transaction fee. 32:04 Keeping track of your bookings and reframing how we view our care recommendations. 40:04 Remembering that people prioritise their pet differently within their family unit. 47:33 The 6 steps that you should make a habit in the consult room. 59:13 Shifting the focus away from money. 63:27 Practice makes perfect (or makes us more comfortable). 70:11 How a client viewing what happens behind the scenes can change their perception of fees. 74:01 Gary's favourite podcasts. 74:28 Gary's one piece of advice for new grad vets. In the ferocious debate swirling around the issue of abortion, we often hear the clarion cry – “My body, my choice”, but is that really true? Today, we speak to a man who is an ethicist, a philosopher, and a doctor and who cares passionately about the issue of pre-born life. Join us as he teaches us how to enter into the debate with the winsome truth of biology and the compelling grace-filled way in which we can convey hope to a woman who struggles in this area. Today, we will learn to think critically and biblically.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, ButcherBox, and InsideTracker. In Western culture, we've gained a negative view of aging. But in other cultures around the world, aging is celebrated and embraced. That's because we define difficult symptoms like aches and pains, cognitive decline, and so many others as “aging” when they're actually signs of dis-ease that can be prevented and often even reversed. Fortunately, there is much we can do to change the trajectory of aging starting at a young age, or at any age. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. David Sinclair, Dr. Frank Lipman, and Dan Buettner about all the ways to age better, from supplements to support mitochondria, to increasing muscle, to cultivating community, and more.Dr. David Sinclair is a professor in the Department of Genetics and codirector of the Paul F. Glenn Center for Biology of Aging Research at Harvard Medical School, where he and his colleagues study longevity, aging, and how to slow its effects.Dr. Frank Lipman is recognized as a vocal pioneer of integrative and Functional Medicine (or what he calls “Good Medicine”).
